He was born in Hampton, Va., the son of Sheila Butler of Grantsville and William L. Shelley, Jr., of Newark Valley, N.Y.

Surviving in addition to his parents are one daughter, Britney Shelley of Chloe; his step-father, Billy D. Butler of Grantsville; four brothers, Dustin Shelley, David Dodd, Jacob Dodd and John Dodd, all of Grantsville; two step-sisters, Sharma Butler, Sabrina Butler and Jessie Butler, all of Elizabeth; two step-brothers, Brent Butler of North Carolina and Jacob Butler of Creston; and his maternal grandmother, Lona Falls of Grantsville.
Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Rev. Mike Worf officiating. Burial was in Bailey Cemetery, Minnora.
DELMAS RICHARDS
Delmas R. Richards, 86, of Parkersburg, died Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2002, at his home.
He was born in Grantsville, the son of the late Loman and Trina Jones Richards.
He retired in 1983 from Montgomery Ward. He was a Baptist.
Surviving are his wife of 63 years, Corinne Stalnaker Richards; one son, Steven L. Richards of Washington; one daughter, Linda Peuser Tewksbury of Parkersburg; three grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; one sister, Pearl Blair of Pittsburgh, Pa.; and several nieces and nephews.
Services were held at Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, Parkersburg, with Pastor Todd Hill officiating. Burial was in Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
HERMAN FALLS
Herman “Corky” Falls, 89, of Grantsville, formerly of Arnoldsburg, died Friday, Jan. 4, 2002, at Minnie Hamilton Health Care Center.
He was born in Roane County, the son of the late George and Bertha May Falls.
Surviving are one step-son, Larry Joseph of Orrville, Ohio; one brother, Arnold Ray Falls of Arnoldsburg; three sisters, Rosie Hicks and Millie Bishop, both of Arnoldsburg, and Lillie Butler of Orma; and two step-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Edna Falls, in 1997; five brothers, Holbert, John, Thurman, Evert and Jason Falls; one half-brother, Ira Jarvis; one sister, Orvie Wayne; and one half-sister, Lula Hayes.
Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg, with Rev. Alfred Hickman officiating. Burial was in Bailey Cemetery, Minnora.
RUTH VIRGINIA DYE
Ruth Virginia Dye, 86, of Big Springs, died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2002, at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Parkersburg.
She was born in Big Bend, the daughter of the late Carl Eagle and Anna Keller Eagle Sheldon.
She attended school at Bell Run in Calhoun County. She worked as a cook at McCoy’s Restaurant, Smithville, before becoming owner/operator of her own restaurant in Smithville and later in Big Springs. She was a Baptist.
Surviving are three daughters, Doris Williams of Parkersburg, with whom she resided, Edith Haught of Smithville and June Haught of Big Springs; one son, James Dye of Ellenboro; two sisters, Omajean Williams of Big Bend and Wandalee Fuller (address unknown); 16 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; one step-great-grandchild; three great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, William M. Dye; one brother, Gaylord Eagle; five sisters, Mildred Snyder, Katherine Garrettson, Madeline Bednar, Margaret Matthess and Bonnie Kelley; one grandchild; and one great-grandchild.
Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Rev. Alfred Hickman officiating. Burial was in Goodnight Ceme-tery, Big Bend.

Gilbert William (Bill) Husk, 66, of Guernsey, Ohio, died Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2002, at his home.
He was born in Grantsville, the son of the late Albert and Madeline Burrows Husk.
He was a construction crane operator with William Albert’s Construction, Cochocton, Ohio. He was a Protestant.
Surviving are his wife of 17 years, Beverly A. Smith Husk; his step-mother, Geneva Husk of Grantsville; two sons, Billy Husk of Freeport, Ohio, and Ricky Husk of Akron, Ohio; four daughters, Barbie Husk of Tallmadge, Ohio, Debbie Croft of Newcomerstown, Ohio, Billie

Charles Roy Richards, 61, of Mt. Zion, died Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2002, at Minnie Hamilton Health Care Center.
He was the son of the late Desmoin and Maggie Norman Richards.
Surviving are one son, Charles Richards, Jr., and wife Amanda of Big Springs; two granddaughters, Alexa and Brogan Richards; two step-grandsons, Kyler and Mason Propst; three brothers, Larry Richards and Ronzel Richards, both of Big Bend, and Denver Richards of Grantsville; and three sisters, Dessel Starcher of Barberton, Ohio, and Patty Knight and Sadie Cunningham, both of Parkersburg.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Ola Triplett and Dottie Richards.

JAMES (Carol) HARDWAY
James (Carol) Hardway, 74, of Duck, died Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2002, at Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital, Weston.
He was the son of the late James and Florence Santy Hardway.
He was in the U.S. Army from 1950-1952 and was a member of the American Legion. He was self-employed in the timber industry.
Surviving are his wife, Rebecca Starcher Hardway; two sons, Phillip (Duke) Hardway and wife Kara of Buckhannon and Wayne Hardway and wife Vicki of Mt. Zion; one brother, Gene Hardway of Mt. Zion; two sisters, Irene Lambert and Hallie Lambert, both of Strange Creek; and four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Brooks and Casto Hardway, and two sisters, Glennis Carter and Nellie Reed.

WILLIAM WOODROW ANDERSON
William Woodrow Anderson, 87, died Friday, Jan. 4, 2002, at Ashtabula County Medical Center.
He was born in Millstone, the son of the late Elza and Arminda Starcher Anderson.
He retired from Union Carbide, Ashtabula, Ohio, and worked several years for Anderson Enterprises as a truck driver. He was a lifelong member of Ashtabula Eagles.
Surviving are one son, Gene of Ashtabula; one daughter, Bernadine Fanning of Ashtabula; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Hettie Wallace of Akron, Ohio, and Erma Kiplinger of Barberton, Ohio; and two brothers, Shade Anderson of White Sulfur Springs and Paul Anderson of Dexter, Ohio.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Zanna, on Oct. 16, 2001; and one son, Richard.
Services were held at Guerriero Funeral Home, Ashtabula, with Rev. Evan Hamilton of Lily of the Valley Old Regular Baptist Church officiating. Burial was in Monroe Cemetery.
HERBERT BAILEY
Herbert Bailey, 69, of Columbus, Ohio, died Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2002, at his home.
He was the son of the late Reece and Plina Bailey.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and a machinist and welder.
Surviving are his wife, Mona Bailey; six sons, Herbert, Jimmie, Vernon and Tommy, all of Columbus, Brian of Parma, Ohio, and Rick of Cincinnati, Ohio; one daughter, Kathy of Columbus; 11 grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; one brother, Guy Bailey of West Virginia; and five sisters, Mary Jane Nicholas and Jessie Bailey of West Virginia, Diane Young of Florida, Iris Roberts of Ohio and Wanda Bailey.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Bernard; one sister, Corrine; and one infant granddaughter, April Bailey.
Services were held at Schoedinger Cleveland Avenue Chapel, with Rev. Tom Clark of Christ Community Church officiating. Graveside services were held at Orma United Methodist Church Cemetery.
WANDA (Granny) WHIPKEY
Wanda L. (Granny) Whipkey, 87, of Parkersburg, formerly of Grantsville, died Saturday, Jan. 19, 2002, at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Parkersburg.
She was born at Nobe, the daughter of the late Albert Ross and Ida Mae Church Whipkey.
She was manager for several years of “The Store” in Grantsville, and had attended Chapel
Baptist Church, Nobe. She served as a foster grandmother for 13 years in Calhoun and Wood counties and was a former nurse’s aide at Calhoun General Hospital. She enjoyed various church services at Eagle Point Nursing Center where she was a patient.
Surviving are two daughters, Janet Rebecca Smith of Parkersburg and Marilyn Frances Mills of Brohard; one son, Richard Neil Whipkey of Parkersburg; one sister, Ida Mae Nicholas of Grantsville; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by three sisters, Lenna Mae Offutt, Goldie E. Kight and Waneta
Lydick; four brothers, James Henry Whipkey, Albert Ross Whipkey, George Delbert Whipkey and Delmas Edward Whipkey; one grandson, John Patrick Smith; and one great-granddaughter, Athena Dundus.
Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Rev. Casey Stinespring officiating. Burial was in Nobe Cemetery.
NOLA JOHNSTON
Nola M. (Butterball) Johnston, 50, of Mt. Zion, died Friday, Jan. 18, 2002, at Medical College of Virginia, Richmond, Va.
She was the daughter of William H. Meadows of Pleasant Hill and Retta J. Richards of Mt. Zion. She was a member of Brooksville Baptist Church.
Surviving are her husband, Jamie Johnston of Big Bend; one son, Ronnie Sidwell of Millstone; two daughters, Carla Sidwell of Arnoldsburg and Retta Harris of Richmond; two brothers, William Meadows and Johnnie Meadows, both of Parkersburg; one sister, Ada Smith of Parkersburg; and four grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Danny Meadows.

COLLEEN GAINER
Blondenna Colleen Gainer, 72, of Big Springs, died Monday, Jan. 21, 2002, at her residence.
She was born in Leatherbark, the daughter of the late James O. Kirby and Lola Cox Kirby.
She graduated from Harrisville High School in 1946 and worked for many years as a seamstress at Economy Industries, Quality Fabricators, and Rubber Fabricators. She was a member of Blessed Hope Baptist Church, Big Springs.
Surviving are her husband of 53 years, Thirmen Gainer; two daughters, Karen Stanley of Fairmont and Beth Conaway of Newport, Ohio; four grandchildren; two brothers, Dennis W. Kirby and Glennis E. Kirby, both of Big Springs; and three sisters, Mestil Richards of Harrisville, Wanda Moore of Mogadore, Ohio, and Betty Wagoner of Big Bend.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Maxine Eagle.

Edith V. Hardwick, 86, of Troy, died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002.
She was born in Calhoun County, the daughter of the late Charles Wesley and Lida Brown Harris.
She was a former employee of Louie Glass, Weston, supervisor in the food service department of Glenville State College, and a personal care giver for the elderly. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Grantsville.
Surviving are five step-children; 13 step-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Rev. Roger Vance officiating.
Burial was in Old Bethlehem Cemetery, near Grantsville.

Flossie M. Stump, 83, of Wellington, Ohio, formerly of Stumptown, died Tuesday, Jan. 22,
2002, in Elyria United Methodist Village, Elyria, Ohio.
She was born in Braxton County, the daughter of the late James L. and Eliza Dunlap Putnam.
Surviving are one daughter, Joan Wiseman of Springfield, Mo.; two sons, Vaughn Stump of Wellington and Lawrence Stump of Mebane, N.C.; two sisters, Elsie Knight of Rosedale and Gertrude Lamp of Southington, Ohio; three brothers, Edward Putnam and Bernard Putnam, both of Warren, Ohio, and Robert Putnam of Pennsylvania; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Harold Stump, in 1977; one sister; and nine brothers.

RADER HARDMAN
Rader Hardman, 97, of Rt. 1, Reedy, died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002, at Eldercare of West
Virginia, Ripley.
He was born in Richardson, the son of the late Johnny M. and Electa Scott Hardman.
He graduated from Spencer High School in 1925, completed Spencer Normal School and attended New River State College, Montgomery. He was a farmer, taught school for 23 years in Roane County, and worked for the Agriculture Stabilization Service. He was a member of Peniel United Methodist Church, where he had been a member of the Administrative Board, the Board of Trustees, and a Sunday School teacher.
Surviving are one daughter, Janet Lee Bryant of Ripley; two sons, John D. Hardman and George E. Hardman, both of Peniel; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Hazel and Ruby Claire; his wife of more than 50 years, Elsie Elizabeth Gandee Hardman; and two children, Betty Jean and Charles Conn.
Services were held at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home, Spencer, with Rev. Eldon Shingleton and Rev. Jerry Eaton officiating. Burial was in Spencer Memorial Cemetery.
GLENDON NEIL ASHLEY
Glendon Neil Ashley, 67, of Big Bend, died Sunday, Jan. 27, 2002, at Minnie Hamilton Health Care Center. He was born in Burning Springs, the son of the late Jess G. and Nellie McCroskey Ashley.
He was a Master Sergeant with the U.S. Air Force, serving in the Korean and Vietnam wars. He was a lifetime member of Disabled Veterans of America, Parkersburg, and a recipient of the Purple Heart.
Surviving are his wife, Elma Kathryn Whited Ashley; one son, Glendon Guy Ashley of Glenville; one daughter, Glenna Kay Ashley of Carrollton, Ohio; also Glendon Neil Ashley, Jr., Joyce and Patricia; one brother, Niles G. Ashley of Elizabeth; and six grandchildren.
Services were held at Matheny Pomroy Funeral Home, Elizabeth, with Pastor Bryan Groves and Rev. David Morris officiating. Military honors were held at Hill Grove Cemetery, Wirt County.

William Smith, 68, of Cortland, Ohio, died Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002, in Forum Trubull Memorial Hospital, Warren, Ohio.
He was born in Greensboro, Pa., the son of the late Samuel and Mary Rafferty Smith.
He was a former employee of General Motors Corp. and was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran. He was a member of U.A.W. Marine Corps League and was a Mason.
Surviving are his wife, Jeanetta Hardman Smith, and one brother, Alfred Smith of
Greensboro.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Samuel Smith, Jr., and James Smith, and one sister, Edith Hunchuck.

Hugh G. Wilson, 92, of Grantsville, died Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2002, at Sunbridge Care and Rehab Center, Glenville.
He was the son of the late George S. and Bessie Stump Wilson.
He was a member of Rush Run Baptist Church and Grantsville IOOF Lodge. He attended Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church and retired from Hope Gas.
Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Juanita Lymer Wilson; three sons, Charles R. Wilson of Parkersburg, William S. Wilson of Mineral Wells and David Wilson of Grantsville; two daughters, Connie J. Bailey of Parkersburg and Carole Weekley of Parkersburg; one brother, Rolley J. Wilson of Parkersburg; five sisters, Bessie Ledsome of Reedy, Eda Stalnaker of Winston, N.C., Donna Waldeck of Parkersburg and Osa Fowler and Mary Starkey, both of Grantsville; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.

HAZEL DYE
Hazel S. Dye, 87, of Brohard, died Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2002, at St. Joseph’s Hospital.
He was born in Calhoun County, the son of the late Judson B. and Icie Smith Dye.
He was a retired well tender with Hope Gas Co. with several years of service. He was a member of Strait Creek Baptist Church, where he had served as a deacon and trustee for 28 years, and as superintendent, teacher and treasurer. He was a member of Knights of Pythias, Smithville.
Surviving are his wife of 63 years, Wilda Veon Dye; one son, Harry Dye of Brohard; three grandchildren; three great-grandsons; and two sisters, Mary Gayleard and Lillion Manninen.
He was preceded in death by one son, Jackson W. Dye; three brothers; and two sisters.
Services were held at Raiguel Funeral Home, Harrisville, with Rev. Lewis Villers officiating. Burial was in Hartley Cemetery, Brohard.
NOLAN WAYNE
Nolan Wayne, 66, of Milo, died Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2002, at his home.
He was born in Calhoun County, the son of the late Earl and Orvie Falls Wayne.
He was a former mechanic and attended Pleasant Grove Baptist Church and Church of the Living God, Spencer. He was an accomplished stringed instrument musician and made stringed instruments.
Surviving are two daughters, Penny Casstevens of North Carolina and Orvie Nicholas of Spencer; two sons, Earl Wayne and Dennis Wayne, both of North Carolina; four brothers, Lloyd Wayne of Orma, Frank R. Wayne of Shinnston, Larry K. Wayne of Wooster, Ohio, and Jerry D. Wayne of Parkersburg; two sisters, Mazel Burrough of Spencer and Anna Boggess of Liverpool; and eight grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Macel Cabell, and three grandchildren, Kathy, Jackie and Allen Wayne.

Earl V. Miller, 94, of Shock, died Thursday, Jan. 31, 2002, at Miletree Health Care Center, Spencer.
He was the son of the late Lewis Leroy and Effie Rider Miller.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of Shock Church of Christ and Eureka Lodge No. 40, AF&AM.
Surviving are six sons, Ancel E. Miller of Garrettsville, Ohio, Hugh J. Miller, Davy L. Miller and John C. Miller, all of Shock, Rex V. Miller of Orrville, Ohio, and Stephen J. Miller of Stumptown; one daughter, Rachel M. Wolfe of Palestine; two half-brothers, Vernon D. Miller of Billings, Montana, and David M. Miller of Normantown; one sister, Gertrude Wilson of Malta, Ohio; 12 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

JIMMIE CHURCH, SR.
Jimmie G. Church, Sr., 63, of Massillon, Ohio, died Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2002, at Massillon Community Hospital.
He was born in Spencer, the son of the late Orville G. and Maude Mae Mace Church.
He was a U.S. Army veteran. He retired from Ohio Operating Engineer after 30 years of service and was self-employed as a truck driver. He was a member of Country Chapel Church, Doylestown, Ohio.
Surviving are his ex-wife, Sandra Church of Massillon; special friend, Julie Thomas of Massillon; one son, Jimmie G. Church, Jr., of Canal Fulton, Ohio; two daughters, Debbie Steward of Canal Fulton and Tammy Ammon of North Lawrence, Ohio; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

MAXINE FOUTTY
Maxine Sarah Foutty, 76, of Palmer, Alaska, died Saturday, Feb. 2, 2002, at Our House Assisted Living Center, Palmer.
She was born in Arnoldsburg, the daughter of the late Earl and Lalah Knotts.
She received her education in Calhoun County through the eighth grade. She had worked for S.S. Kresge Co. in the early 1940s, and was a housekeeper and full time mother. She was a member of Lauckport United Methodist Church, Parkersburg, and Palmer Senior Citizens Morning Star program.
Surviving are one son, David of Wasilla, Alaska; one granddaughter; three sisters; and
three brothers.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Hershel H. Foutty; two brothers; and one sister.
Her cremated remains were buried at Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Cemetery, Mineral Wells.
GAIL WARNER
Gail L. Warner, 52, of Naples, Fla., died Monday, Jan. 21, 2002.
Surviving are her husband, Robert V. Warner; two children, Gail Joann Cannon of Naples and Dale Cannon of Orlando, Fla.; her mother, Iva Flinner of Naples; one brother, Gordon Allison; and one grandchild, Alexis Kennon.

MARK LEE BLANCHFIELD
Mark Lee Blanchfield, 47, of Barberton, Ohio, died Saturday, Feb. 2, 2002.
He was the son of Helen Blanchfield and the late Walter Blanchfield.
He had served in the U.S. Army and was a member of Barberton VFW Post 1066.
Surviving in addition to his mother are one son, Jason; one daughter, Stacey Allemier; and
one brother, Scott D. Blanchfield.

NELMA STUMP
Nelma G. Stump, 73, of Orma, died Sunday, Feb. 3, 2002, at Roane General Hospital.
She was the daughter of the late Cecil R. and Nell Arnold Jarvis.
She was a member and former superintendent of Minnora Prudence Chapel Church. She retired from Kellwood Co. in 1990. She was instrumental in establishing the clothing mission in Orma and had been active
in volunteer work in the community.
Surviving are her husband of 50 years, Vance Stump; one daughter and son-in-law, Patti and
Ed Hicks of Chloe; one son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Jean Stump of Chloe; two brothers, Bernard Jarvis of Chloe and Donald Jarvis of Phoenix, Ariz.; seven sisters, Betty Smith and Jean Holmes, both of Mesa, Ariz., Hope Schoolcraft of Orma, Helen Burns of Elizabeth, Alice Conley of Lynco, Donnie King of Ripley and Connie Rucker of Diamond; four grandchildren, Wendy Manns, Chuck Hicks, Shelly Goad and Julie Vineyard; and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was born in Roane County, the daughter of Richard and Annalea Siers Walker of Statesville.
She was a member of Abaline Church of Christ, Statesville, and was a former employee of Kellwood Co., Spencer, and One Valley Bank.
Surviving in addition to her parents are three brothers, Richard Walker, Jr., of Cottageville, Curtis Walker of Huntsville, Ala., and Phillip Walker of Statesville; one sister, Amy Jo Walker of Statesville; five nieces; seven nephews; and one favorite aunt, Carol Siers.

Warren J. Wright, 54, of Grantsville, died Monday, Feb. 11, 2002, at Davis Memorial Hospital, Elkins.
He was born in Kanawha County, the son of the late Ozie and Leona Vannoy Wright.
He was a U.S. Air Force veteran and was a former machine operator in the newspaper industry in Fairfax, Va.
Surviving are one brother, James Wright of Grantsville; one half-brother, Herb Wright of Oscoda, Mich.; and three half-sisters, Jean Shock and Ruth Wright, both of Grantsville, and June Miller of Akron, Ohio.
He was preceded in death by one half-sister, Martha Westfall.
Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Harry Siers officiating. Burial was in Pleasant Hill Cemetery.

Betty J. Norman, of Norton, Ohio, died Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2002.
She was a resident of Norton for over 40 years and was a member of Sherman Church of Christ, Norton.
Surviving are her husband, Jerry; one son, Bruce Norman of Norton; four grandchildren; six brothers; one sister, who was also a close friend; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services were held at Sherman Church of Christ with Bill Stone officiating. Burial was in

Elizabeth Moles, 66, of Rosedale, Braxton County, died Friday, Feb. 8, 2002, at her home.
She was born in Kanawha County, the daughter of the late Cecil and Naomi Stewart Kirk.
She was a homemaker.
Surviving are four daughters, Carol Campbell and Rebecca Hanshaw, both of Rosedale, Jean Stump of Chloe and Sherry Stewart of Elkview; four sons, Gilbert Eugene Moles of Spencer, Bruce Moles of Clayton, N.C., and Michael Moles and Billy Joe Moles, both of Rosedale; 14 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Junior E. Moles, in 1995.

William Burl Wells, 75, of Butler, Pa., died Friday, Feb. 8, 2002.
He was born in Annamoriah, the son of the late Ray Wells and Della Stutler.
He retired from Armor’s Meat Co., Pittsburgh, Pa., and served in the U.S. Navy in World War II.
Surviving are his wife, Marie; three sons, Harry, William and Michael; three daughters, Opal, Helen and Christine; several grandchildren; two brothers, Hie Herron of Annamoriah and Jack Herron of Marshallville, Ohio; and two sisters, Genevieve Mosley of Virginia and Deloris Casto of Orrville, Ohio.
He was preceded in death by two infant brothers, James and Robert Herron, and one infant sister, Virginia Wells.
His cremated remains were buried at Cooper Cemetery, Stutler Road.

Goldie Lou Richards, 73, of Big Bend, died Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2002, at Minnie Hamilton Health Care Center.
She was the daughter of the late Mack and Gearl Taylor Richards.
Surviving are two brothers, Mack Richards, Jr., and Billy Richards, both of Big Bend; five sisters, Rosie Davis, Isabell Davis and Loraine Pursley, all of Big Bend, Hazel Gribble of Brohard and Margaret Wagoner of Big Springs; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by seven sisters, Irene Richards, Pauline Jones, Clara Richards, Alice Richards, Yetta Webb, Threasie Graham and Hettie Beaty; and four brothers, Denver Richards, Bernard Richards, Desmoine Richards and Sherdie Richards.
Services were held at Norman Ridge Church with Rev. Randy Wilson officiating. Burial was in Norman Ridge Cemetery.

Phyllis Yvonne Booher, 59, of Barberton, Ohio, died Saturday, Feb. 2, 2002, at her home.
She was born in Big Bend, the daughter of Ila Hildreth and the late Earl Hildreth and granddaughter of the late Clark and Olive Wilson of Big Springs.
She attended Calhoun County High School where she met her late husband, Donald Booher. They moved to Barberton, Ohio, and she lived there for 40 years.
Surviving are one daughter, Tammy Pol of Barberton, Ohio; two sons, Steven Booher of Barberton and Roger Booher of Alabama; one brother, Rev. Leon Hildreth of Woodstock, Ga.; one sister, Pam Tipton of Coatesville, Ind.; six grandchildren; one aunt, Arnell Davis of St. Marys; and one uncle, Opha Wilson of St. Marys.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Booher.
Burial was in Greenlawn Cemetery, Barberton.
CARL SMITH
Carl R. Smith, 63, of Grantsville, died Saturday, Feb. 16, 2002, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital.
He was born in Calhoun County, the son of the late Oral and Cecil H. Elliott Smith.
He was a mechanic in the construction industry and had been active in oil and gas production.
Surviving are his wife, Izetta S. Smith; two sons, Oral B. Smith of Mooresville, N.C., and Lucas E. Smith of Grantsville; one step-daughter, Sheila L. Jones of Big Springs; one step-son, Richard H. Rader of Grantsville; three sisters, Lucretia Yoak of Spencer, Leta Bennett of Pennsboro, and Annalene Duskey of Texarkana, Tex.; and eight grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Oral D. Smith.
Private burial was held at the convenience of the family.

She was born in Kanawha County and was a former employee of Valley Bell, Charleston.

Guy Little, 68, of Mt. Zion, died Sunday, Feb. 17, 2002, at Roane General Hospital.
He was born at Daniels Run, the son of the late Clarence and Minnie O’Dell Little.
After driving log trucks for many years, he joined the Dept. of Highways in 1979 and retired after 16 years of service. He was a member of Walnut Grove Community Church.
Surviving are his wife of 44 years, Eva Gearldine Little; four sons, Stanley Little, Robert Little and David Little, all of Mt. Zion, and Eugene Little of Russett; three daughters, Connie Miller of Grantsville, Patricia Toppings of Millstone and Debbie Greathouse of Spencer; four brothers, Gail and Denver Little, both of Parkersburg, Ronnie Little of Parsons and Donald Lee Little of Sand Ridge; and two sisters, Betty Curry of Mt. Zion and Sharon Ann Vannoy of Parkersburg.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Dale and Hale Little.

Fred E. Williams, Jr., 78, of Parkersburg, died Saturday, Feb. 16, 2002, at St. Joseph’s Hospital.
He was born at Cabot Station, the son of the late Fred E. and Goldie Smith Williams, Sr.
He graduated from Parkersburg High School in 1942 and served in the 3rd Airborne Division in the European Theater during World War II. He worked for 42 years in the B&O Chessie system.
He was a member of Camden Avenue Church of Christ.
Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Louise G. Williams; two sons, Edward W. Williams and Jeffery J. Williams; one daughter, Kimberli J. Gobel; four grandchildren; and five great-grand-children.

Jack M. Ferguson, 94, of Mt. Zion, died Sunday, Feb. 17, 2002, at Minnie Hamilton Health Care Center.
He was born at White Pine, the son of the late John K. and Stella Connolly Ferguson.
He was a 1928 graduate of Calhoun County High School and graduated from Cohen Electrical College, Chicago, Ill., in 1930. He was a member of Independent Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Huntington Local #317, and National Chapter, Washington, D.C. He was a member of Eureka Lodge #40, AF&AM, Grantsville, Charleston Consistory of Scottish Rite Bodies, and Nemesis Shrine Temple, Parkersburg.
Surviving are his wife, Ernestine Ross Ferguson; two daughters, Virginia Ice of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Elizabeth (Betty) Salisbury of St. Albans; six grandchildren; nine great-grand-children; and one niece, Nellie Dale Byrne of Mt. View, Wyoming.
He was preceded in death by one son, John Dale Ferguson; one brother, Rome Ferguson; and two sisters, Edna Swanson and Eula Ferguson.

Frances Madelyn Hathaway, 88, of Grantsville, died Monday, Feb. 18, 2002, at her home.
She was the daughter of the late William Russel and Dpra Cain Knight.
She was a successful business woman in Calhoun County for many years. She was a lifetime member of VFW Auxiliary Post 5959 and a member of Hires Run Methodist Church, Burnsville.
Surviving are two sons, Gary Hardman of Mocksville, N.C., and William Jones of Grantsville; two brothers, Hurcel Knight of Parkersburg and Louis Knight of Baltimore, Md.; four sisters, Margaret Cunningham of Grantsville, Mammie Beall of North Canton, Ohio, Martha Britton of Weston and Myrtle Powell of South Canton, Ohio; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William Howard Hathaway; two sisters; and one brother.

She was the daughter of the late Kenneth and Wanda Swisher McGuire of MacFarlan.

EVA VIRGINIA COOPER
Eva Virginia Brumage Cooper, 88, of Vienna, died Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2002, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital.
She was born in Big Bend, the daughter of the late Walter Howard and India Lee Rice Brumage.
She attended school in the Mineral Wells area and graduated from Parkersburg High School in 1933. She worked at American Viscose, Internal Revenue Service and Wood County Bank, and was an Avon representative for more than 25 years. She was a member of Epworth United Methodist Church, Parkersburg.
Surviving are one son, Michael Cooper of Morgantown; one daughter, Cynthia J. Cooper of Vienna; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Harry Daniel Cooper, in April, 1989; three brothers, Wilbert, Harold and James Brumage; and one sister, Grayce Brumage Dawson.

She was born in Calhoun County, the daughter of the late Sanford and Rose Lee Stanley Collins.
She was a homemaker and a member of Briscoe Run Baptist Church.
Surviving are one son, Howard David Backus of Vienna; two daughters, Violet Tant of Parkersburg and Loretta Ankrom of Belleville; 11 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and
six great-great-grandchildren.

Sherman Wise, 75, of Glenville, died Thursday, Feb. 21, 2002.
He was the son of the late Robert and Lummie Wise.
Surviving are five daughters, Katie Westfall, Helen Springston, Marie Tanner, Peggy Tanner and Susan Tanner, all of Spencer; four sons, Robert Wise of Glenville, David Wise of Parkersburg, Ivan Wise of Spencer and Sherman Wise of Gandeeville; two sisters, Opal and Arizona, both of Grantsville; and one brother, June Wise of Grantsville.

Ann A. Creel, 76, of Parkersburg, died Friday, Feb. 22, 2002, at St. Joseph’s Hospital.
She was born in Grantsville, the daughter of the late Clarence and Bertha Glover Armstrong.
She retired in 1994 from Corning Glass with 49½ years of service. She was a former den mother with the Cub Scouts and a lifelong member of Stephenson United Methodist Church.
Surviving are one son, Gregory W. Creel of Parkersburg; one daughter, Karen C. Dillon of
Parkersburg; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald L. Creel; one brother, Frank Armstrong; and one sister, Betty Hamrick.

Curtis Walbrown, 91, of Looneyville, died Sunday, Feb. 24, 2002, at his home.
He was born in Calhoun County, the son of the late Michael and Mary Sampson Walbrown.
He was a retired supervisor for the West Virginia Dept. of Highways. He was a member of Linden Masonic Lodge and Milo Church. He was the last member of the Michael Walbrown family.
Surviving are his wife, Dorothy Miller Walbrown.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Willadean Walbrown; seven brothers, Henry, Wilbur, Ernest, Winfred, Seldon, Oris and Denver Walbrown; and five sisters, Olive Moneypenny, Stella Hardy, Harriet Witte, Icy Bailey and Elizabeth Surface.

Michael B. Ford, 57, of Parkersburg, died Monday, Feb. 25, 2002, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital.
He was born in Freed, the son of the late Audrey and Ruth Freed Ford. He was affiliated
with Good Shepherd Episcopal Church.
Surviving are one daughter, Vickie Cunningham of Smithville; two grandchildren; one brother, Gail; and two sisters, Amelia and Betty.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Dennis Ford.

Darlene Vanhorn, 41, of Glenville, died Monday, Feb. 25, 2002, at United Hospital Center, Clarksburg.
She was born in Ravenna, Ohio, the daughter of the late Ernest and Pauline Morris Vanhorn.
She was a graduate of Glenville State College and was an elementary school teacher in Gilmer and Calhoun counties.
Surviving are two sisters, Charlene S. Vanhorn of Glenville and Linda K. Vanhorn of
Moorefield; one niece, Rachael P. Stewart of Glenville; and one nephew, Christopher Stewart of Glenville.

Benjamin Franklin Davis, 66, of Parkersburg, died Thursday, Feb. 28, 2002, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital.
He was born at Lefthand, Roane County, the son of the late Clarence Otis and Icie L. Sims Davis.
After retiring as a driver for Wood County Senior Citizens, he worked as a security guard for Powell Apartments.

She was born at Pennsboro, the daughter of the late Russell and Edna Heath Dodd.
She had been employed by Sheppard Nursing Home, Ellenboro, and Myles Manufacturing Co., Pennsboro.
She was affiliated with Bonds Creek Freewill Baptist Church, Ellenboro.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, William C. Mace; her second husband, Herschel Pyles; her third husband, David Stephens; four brothers, Millard Dodd, Ray Dodd, Nile Dodd and James Dodd; and one sister, Nancy Dodd.

She was born in Calhoun County, the daughter of the late Samuel C. and Flora Gay Bell Husk.
She retired from Pine View Continuous Care with 21 years of service as a nursing assistant.

Carl E. Starcher, 68, of Coolville, Ohio, died Monday, Mar. 11, 2002, at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Parkersburg.
He was born in Rocksdale, the son of Velta Starcher of Ravenswood and the late Kessler Starcher.
He was a veteran of the Korean War and was a retired inspector for General Motors, Cleveland, Ohio. He was a member of American Legion Post 15, Parkersburg, and
Disabled American Veterans.
Surviving in addition to his mother are his wife, Brenda; one son, Michael Starcher and wife Shelia of Grantsville; one daughter, Sandy Marous and husband Scott of Chardon, Ohio; two step-sons, Billy Joe Wilson of Delaware, Ohio, and Steve Wilson of Parkersburg; one son-in-law, Charles Laughlin of Grantsville; five grandchildren; several step-grandchildren; and one brother, Dale Starcher of Painesville, Ohio.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Sheila Laughlin.

Rusty T. Sampson, 40, of Orrville, Ohio, died Saturday, Mar. 9, 2002, at Massillon Community Hospital, Ohio.
He was born in Orma, the son of Margaret Sampson-McClain of Massillon, and had resided in Massillon most of his life.
He had worked at Bender’s Asphalt, Canal Fulton, Ohio, and as a carpenter at 3D Construction for the past 12 years. He attended Restoration Ministries Church.

She had been a nursing assistant for Maple Hill Nursing Home and Eldercare Nursing Home for 15 years. She was a former member of AMVETS Auxiliary and Montville Township Volunteer Fire Dept.

She was born in Oka, the daughter of the late Arthur Jarvis and Rebecca Cottrell Jarvis.

member of Order of Eastern Star and spent many years in Stow Sunshiners and its bowling

Louise Douglas Butler McDonald, 96, of Charleston, formerly of Grantsville, died Wednesday, Apr. 3, 2002.
She was born in Oak Grove, Ky., the daughter of the late John M. and Mary B. Steger Butler.
She attended public schools in Kentucky and graduated from North Texas State Normal College, now the University of North Texas, with a degree in education. She taught at Calhoun County High School for many years, was a member of Knotts Memorial United Methodist Church, and was active in civic and community affairs in Calhoun County from 1931-1996. She was a life member of Grantsville Chapter 73, Order of Eastern Star, a former member of the regional board of the state library commission and a member of the former Woman’s Civic Club of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs.
Surviving are one daughter, Nancy L. Street of Charleston; one son, Robert F. McDonald of
New York, N.Y.; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dewitt C. McDonald, and her husband, Logan McDonald, and their sons, James L., in 1964, and John B., in 1973.

MACK DENZIL BOGGS
Mack Denzil Boggs, 68, of Spencer, died Thursday, Apr. 11, 2002, at Roane General Hospital.
He was born in Linden, Roane County, the son of the late Howard and Ruby Sheppard Boggs.
He entered the ministry as a United Methodist pastor in Reedy and served the Weston United Methodist churches while attending West Virginia Wesleyan College where he graduated with honors in 1962. He obtained his master’s in divinity degree in 1967 from the Methodist Theological School of Ohio and served churches in West Virginia and Ohio for 29 years, including congregations in Grantsville, Reedy, Weston, Huttonsville, Cottageville,Pennsboro, and Kirkpatrick, Ohio.
Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Doris (Liz LeMac) Merrett Boggs; two sons, Jeffrey Boggs of Wytheville, Va., and Martin Boggs of Nashville, Tenn.; three daughters, Penny Plummer of Wytheville, Sheree Schold of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Sonia McGee of Spencer; two brothers, Daris Boggs of Belpre, Ohio, and Harlen Boggs of Charlotte, N.C.; one sister, Elah Jan Starcher of St. Albans; seven grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

Corene Hicks died Sunday, Apr. 14, 2002, at Selby Hospital, Marietta, Ohio.
She was born in Calhoun County, the daughter of the late Thomas and Verna Jarvis.

She was preceded in death by her husband, David Hicks; two sons, Charles Hicks and Eugene Hicks; one grandson, Roger Hicks; and longtime companion, Ingle Hendershot.

He was born in Gilmer County and was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War and an oil field worker.

Lott of Big Bend; one daughter, Kelley Radcliff of Newark, Ohio; two sons, Larry Christopher Radcliff of Beaumont, Tex., and Larry Dale Radcliff of Big Bend; one step-son, Randy Jones of Nicut; one step-daughter, Theresa Melzer of Tuscarawas, Ohio; step-father, Ronzel L. Lott of Big Bend; one brother, Gerald A. Riddle of Big Bend; and seven grandchildren, Grandon Radcliff, Anastasia Radcliff, Ashley Davis, Dakota Jones, Chelsa Campbell, Alicyh Campbell and Taylor Richards.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Fred Eugene Radcliff.

Virginia Sturms Snow, 80, of Mt. Airy, N.C., died Saturday, Apr. 13, 2002, at her residence.
She was born in Grantsville, the daughter of the late Clay and Ruie Barnes Sturms.
She graduated from Calhoun High School in 1942 and had resided in North Carolina for 56 years.
Surviving are two daughters, Barbara Collins and Beverly Parker; three sons, Preston Snow of the home, Charlie Snow and James Snow; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one brother and sister-in-law, Clay and Waneta Sturms, Jr., of Grantsville; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by one son, Bobby Snow; one sister, Hazel Marks; and two brothers, Foster Tuttle and Arnold Barnes.

Susan D. Anderson, 55, of Parkersburg, died Friday, Apr. 19, 2002, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital.
She was born at Industry, the daughter of Clenden and Helen Phillips of Davisville.
She was a 1964 graduate of Wirt County High School and was a Methodist. She had been a resident of Eagle Pointe Nursing Facility since January, 2001.
Surviving in addition to her parents are one brother, Gary Phillips and wife Kathy of Munday; one sister, Nanette Casto and husband Joe of Davisville; one uncle, Ercel (Pete) Phillips of Elizabeth; two aunts, Carolyn Lofghen of Gansvount, N.Y., and Patricia Phillips of Great Falls, Va.; two nephews; and two nieces.
She was preceded in death by one son, Bryan C. Anderson, in 1994; three uncles; and four aunts.

Lucy Slaven, 76, of Ellenboro, died on Saturday, Apr. 20, 2002, at her residence.
She was born at King Knob, near Harrisville, the daughter of the late Ira Newton and Letha Kyer Elliott.
She had been employed at the former Yonker’s Manufacturing, Parkersburg, the former M. Serman and Co., Harrisville, and retired from Mid-Atlantic Glass, Ellenboro, with more than 20 years of service. She was a member of Harrisville Baptist Church.
Surviving are two sons, William N. Fittro of Parkersburg and Charles W. Slaven of Ellenboro; one daughter, Karen Bunner of Harrisville; two sisters, Beulah Heffner of Big Springs and Myrl McLaughlin of Williamstown; five grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Bessie Britton and Mary Tingler.

He was born in Calhoun County, the son of the late Ferrell and Josie Kerby Sampson.
He was a former employee of Sav-A-Tool Co., Grantsville, for 27 years, and was a member of Victory Baptist Church, near Grantsville.
Surviving are his wife of 48 years, Mona Edgell Sampson; one daughter, Peggy Dye and
husband Terry of Big Springs; five sisters, Ulinee Falb, Ettalean Kerby of Mt. Wheeler G. Hall, 74, of Clover, Roane County, died Saturday, Apr. 27, 2002, at his home.
He was born at Arnoldsburg, the son of the late Raleigh W. and Iva Greathouse Hall.
He was a retired teacher and principal in Roane and Kanawha counties, with 33 years of service. He was a 1945 graduate of Calhoun County High School and attended West Virginia Wesleyan College. He received a B.A. degree from Glenville State College in 1950 and an M.A. degree from Marshall University in 1960. He was a member of Spencer Roane County Volunteer Fire Dept. and charter member of Clover Volunteer Fire Dept. He was a Methodist and a Navy veteran of World War II.
Surviving are his wife, Ada H. Hall, whom he married Aug. 25, 1951; one brother, Edsel “Pancho” Hall of Spencer; and several nieces and nephews.

She was the daughter of the late George and Sissie Nottingham Davis.
She retired from TRW, Cleveland, Ohio, and was a homemaker.
Surviving are one daughter, Deborah S. Parsons of Shallotte, N.C.; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

She was born in Big Bend, the daughter of the late Clarence Romeo and Edna Williams Bower.
She was a former volunteer at Arlington Nursing Home and a Sunday School teacher at Gihon Methodist Church, where she was active in the Child Evangelist Program. She was active with Gihon Homemakers Club and was a member of Landmark Baptist Church.
Surviving are her husband, William A. “Abe” Barker; two sons, Kenneth Barker of Mathews,

Jackson “Jack” D. Boggs, 75, of Vienna, died Sunday, May 12, 2002, at Mark Rest Center, McConnelsville, Ohio.
He was born in Stumptown, the son of the late Roscoe and Edna Blackshire Boggs.
He enlisted in the U.S. Merchant Marine and the U.S. Army as a veteran of World War II. He retired from Sears & Roebuck after 25 years of service and owned Ammco Transmission for a few years. He was a member of VFW 8127 Vienna Post, where he served as past commander and was honored as National Deputy Chief of Staff. He served as past commander for the Disabled American Veterans and Amvets Post 34. He was a member of Cross Roads United Methodist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Clara E. Lynch; one daughter, Cathy Boggs of Mineral Wells; three

He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, retired from Kaiser Aluminum, and attended Leatherbark Community Church.

He was born in Calhoun County, the son of the late John Pierson and Sarah Janett King Arnold.
He was a U.S. Army veteran and retired from Johns Manville in 1980.

Fleming, Ohio; seven step-grandchildren; 17 step-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was born in Parkersburg, the son of Genevieve Lemon of Spencer and the late Alvin Lemon.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, owner of Village Motors and member of Studebaker Drivers Club. He was a 32nd degree Mason and member of Moriah Lodge 38, AF&AM, Temple of Tampa, Fla., and Scottish Rite-Valley of Ocala, Fla. He formerly attended First Baptist Church, Grantsville.
Surviving in addition to his mother are his wife, Iris Lemon; one son, James A. Hagan “Calhoun” Powell, 89, of Akron, Ohio, died Sunday, May 26, 2002.
He was born in Millstone and retired in 1977 from Morgan Adhesive, Akron. He was a member of Albrecht Avenue Church of God.
Surviving are four sons, Richard of Akron, Gary of Mogadore, Ohio, Larry of Springfield Township, Ohio, and Terry of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio; two daughters, Jean Cole of Springfield Township and Janet Savich of Akron; and numerous grandchildren, great-grand-children; and great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Estel, in 1997; one daughter, Erma Lee; three grandchildren, Stanley Houchin, Michael Powell and Robin Arnold; and one great-grandson, Andrew Powell.

ROY PAUL (Pete) BUSH
Roy Paul (Pete) Bush, 87, of Millstone, died Thursday, May 23, 2002, in St. Joseph’s Hospital, Parkersburg.
He was born at St. Clara, Doddridge County, the son of the late David Roy and Hortense Garrett Bush.
He was a 1933 graduate of Troy High School, 1952 graduate of Glenville State College, and received his master’s degree from West Virginia University in 1954. He worked in Baltimore shipyards and was a former Calhoun County elementary school teacher with 35 years service. He began his teaching career in one-room schools and later served as principal of Arnoldsburg Elementary for 19 years. He served as a substitute teacher for 12 years following his retirement in 1972. He was a former employee of Orders Construction Co.
and had been in the Christmas tree business at Millstone since 1950.
He was a member of Albert’s Chapel United Methodist Church, Sand Ridge. He had served as a member of the board of directors of Calhoun County Committee on Aging and was vice chairman of West Fork Community Action and one of the founders of the Molasses Festival, Arnoldsburg.
Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Verda Griffin Bush; one sister, Ruby Skidmore of Weston; and one half-sister, Patty Mitchell of Millstone.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Russell Bush, and three sisters, Eula Short, his
twin Pauline Butcher and Lucille Vannoy.
Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg, with Rev. Rick Swearengin officiating. Burial was in Sand Ridge Cemetery.

Evelyn S. Campbell, 80, of Grantsville, died Thursday, May 30, 2002, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital, Parkersburg.
She was born in Gilmer County, the daughter of the late Matthew and Lucille Floyd Self.
She was a graduate of Sand Fork High School and attended Glenville State College. She was retired from Calhoun Insurance Agency, Grantsville, with 28 years of service. She was a
founder of Calhoun General Hospital Auxiliary and a member of Grantsville Civic Club, VFW Auxiliary, Grantsville Rebekah Lodge, Calhoun County Historical Society, First Baptist Church, Grantsville, Phoebe Cunningham Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution, and Francis Melton Mission Circle. She had served on the Calhoun County Emergency Medical Services Board and was a former town recorder and town council member in Grantsville.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Campbell, whom she married in 1941 at the onset of World War II; and one half-brother, Byrne Self.

She was born in Gilmer County, the daughter of the late Luther and Artie Westfall Stalnaker.
She was a member of Revere E.U.B. Church.
Surviving are six sons, Rondel Grogg of Oberlin, Ohio, Billy Grogg of Nobe, Jack and Kenny Grogg, both of Glenville, Anthony Grogg of Elizabeth and Danny Grogg of Tanner; seven daughters, Lena Ferguson of Lower Salem, Ohio, Deloris Davis and Connie Cogar, both of Parkersburg, Katheryn Phillips and Freda Amos, both of Vienna, Peggy Wade of Tanner, with whom she resided, and Dottie Frashure of Buckhannon; one sister, Oval Morgan of Zanesville, Ohio; 61 grandchildren; 90 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Leamon Grogg, in 1978; six sons, Donal Grogg, Edward Marshall Grogg, Leon Grogg, Fred Grogg, Steven Grogg and Kevin Grogg; and three grandchildren, Wayne Grogg, Jodie Grogg and Pamela Davis.
Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Rev. Ronzel Roberts officiating. Burial was in Nobe Cemetery.

Gearold O. DeWitt, 72, of Parkersburg, died Monday, May 27, 2002, in Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital.
He was born in Creston, the son of the late Violet Snyder Shaffer and step-father James F. Shaffer.
Surviving are one son, James R. DeWitt, two grandsons and one great-grandson, all of Canton, Ohio; and two half-sisters, Linda Sampson and Joy Starcher, both of Mt. Zion.
He donated his body to science and research. At his request, no services were held.

Bobby Gene Hickman of Cleveland, Ohio, died Tuesday, May 14, 2002, at home.
He was the son of the late Oral B. and Gladys V. Bower Hickman of Grantsville.
Surviving are his wife, Estell Hickman; one son, Randall E. Carpenter of Dayton, Ohio; two
daughters, Delberta I. Hickman of Grantsville and Rose A. Seebaugh of Washington; four grandchildren, Amanda Seebaugh, Benjiman Seebaugh, Ashley Carpenter and Misty Fellows; six brothers, Delmer Hickman, Bronson Hickman, Alfred Hickman and Tim Hickman, all of Grantsville, Hatzel Hickman of China Grove, N.C., and Phillip Hickman of Gilboa; and one sister, Darlene Harris of Grantsville.
He was preceded in death by one brother, James F. Hickman.

Donald M. O’Brien, Jr., 61, of Spencer, died Sunday, May 26, 2002, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital.
He was born in Spencer, the son of the late Donald M. and Peggy Starcher O’Brien, Sr., and grandson of the late Hanson and Sarah Starcher of Cremo.
He was maintenance supervisor at W.Va. Dept. of Administration, Parkersburg, and had 41 years of service for the State of West Virginia. He was a member of Memorial United Methodist Church, Spencer.
Surviving are his wife, Sue O’Brien; one son and daughter-in-law, Donald M. and DeAnna O’Brien III of Parkersburg; one step-daughter, Jessica Haught of Spencer; two step-grandchildren, Nicholas and Tabitha; and his mother-in-law, Pauline Davis of Spencer.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Alice O’Brien, in 1982.
Services were conducted at John H. Taylor Funeral Home, Spencer, with Rev. Garry L. Bowen officiating. Burial was in Spencer Memorial Cemetery.

He was born in Calhoun County, the son of the late William D. and Anna Starcher Dillon.
He was a farmer and timberman and attended Albert’s Chapel Church, Sand Ridge.
Surviving are four daughters, Billie D. Ketch and Barbara Webb, both of Spencer, Ellen R. Davis of Elyria, Ohio, and Angela Fulkerson of Elizabethtown, Ky.; one son, Robert C. Dillon of Indianapolis, Ind.; two half-brothers, W.D. Dillon, Jr., of Barberton, Ohio, and J.B. Dillon of Sand Ridge; 15 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Flora F. Peters Dillon, in 1972; three brothers, Joe, George and Orval “Bob” Dillon; one sister, Freda Dillon Spurlin; and two half-sisters, Ruby Sampson and Greta Crawford.

She was born in Creston, the daughter of the late George and Ruth Boyce Nutter. She was a homemaker and a member of Faith Chapel Church, Coolville, Ohio.
Surviving are one son, Dewayne Nutter; one daughter-in-law, Susan Nutter of Grantsville; one sister, Maxine Husk of Little Hocking; two brothers, Robert Nutter of Hockingport, Ohio, and Clay Nutter of Reedsville; three grandchildren; 10 great-grand-children; three

She was born in Big Springs, the daughter of the late Thomas H. and Bertha Metz Richards.
She was a waitress at Bower Restaurant, Grantsville, for several years and was a member of Hoy Chapel United Methodist Church, Big Springs.

She was the daughter of the late Andy and Josie Stutler Craddock. She was employed by Calhoun General Hospital as a cook for 19 years. She was a foster grandparent at Brooksville Grade School and Pleasant Hill Elementary.

Jearl Stump Koontz Turner, 69, of Buckhannon, died Sunday, June 16, 2002, in UHC Hospital, Clarksburg.
She was the daughter of the late Page and Lenna Gherke Stump of Stumptown.
She attended Glenville State College, Marshall University, W.Va. University, W.Va. College of Graduate Studies, University of Florida, Appalachian State College and Shippensburg State College. She was a member of W.Va. Business Education Association, Delta Kappa Gamma, Kappa Delta Pi, Alpha Omicron Pi, AAUW, WSCS for Christ Church for 35 years and the Cancer Support Group of St. Joseph Hospital. After retirement, she was in Buckhannon Women’s Club, Women’s Society of Mt. Rupert Church, president of Normantown High School Alumni Association and secretary-treasurer of the Gherke Reunion. She was retired from W.Va. State College, Institute, and had 35 years of teaching experience, including Galia Academy High School, Gallipolis, Ohio, and Morris Harvey College. She worked for State Farm Insurance Co. and First National Bank, Spencer.
Surviving are her husband, Hobert Turner; one sister, Wanda; two nephews; one great-nephew; two great-nieces; two step-daughters, Luanne Sirsky of New York and Barbara Koontz Baker of Fayetteville; two step-sons, David Turner of Elkins and Jon Luther of California; 10 step-grandchildren; seven step-great-grandchildren; and one step-great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Luther V. Koontz.
There was no service or memorial. She donated her body to WVU for educational research.

He was born in Grantsville, the son of Evelyn Sole Burrows of Parkersburg and the late Hayward Burrows.
He attended school in Grantsville and was a U.S. Army veteran. He was a construction worker and operated heavy equipment.

Mary Helen Wolfe Hartshorn, 73, of Grantsville, died Wednesday, June 19, 2002, at Charleston Area Medical Center.
She was born at Mahone, Ritchie County, the youngest daughter of the late Ernest and Stella
Elliott Wolfe.
She graduated from Calhoun County High School in 1946. She was formerly employed by Calhoun County Health Dept., Calhoun County Extension Office, and retired as a social worker from the West Virginia Dept. of Health and Human Services in 1988. She was a former Girl Scout leader, 4-H leader, member of Order of Eastern Star 73, Rebekah Lodge 52, Daughters of the American Revolution, Phoebe Cunningham Chapter, VFW Ladies Auxiliary 5959, AFSCME, PTA, Civic Club, Calhoun Band Boosters, Calhoun Hospital Auxiliary, 4-H Leaders Association and W.Va. Public Employees Association. She attended Mt. Zion United Methodist Church.
Surviving are her husband of 58 years, Ernest Hartshorn; three daughters, Sharon Lynch and

He was born in White Pine, the son of the late Ethan and Pearl Kendall Hickman.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of the 63rd Infantry in the Korean War. He retired from Hope Gas Co. after many years of service. He was a Methodist.
Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Elizabeth “Betty” Yoak Hickman; one son, Orless Lee Hickman of Vienna; one daughter, Marla Parrish of Parkersburg; three grandchildren; one great-grandson; one brother, Jack Hickman of Dunbar; two sisters, Coe McCartney of East Liverpool, Ohio, and Blondena Parshall of Charleston; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Oral Hickman.

Denzil Mace, Sr., 80, of Spencer, died Saturday, June 22, 2002, at home.
He was born in Calhoun County, the son of the late Mart and Rebecca Roberts Mace.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was retired from Pipeliners Local Union 798.
Surviving are his wife, Anna M. Dolan Mace; three daughters, Sharon McCortney of Akron, Ohio, Debbie Mazon of Walton and Winnie Vandale of Spencer; three sons, Jerry Mace of Gandeeville and Denzil Mace, Jr., and Daniel Mace, both of Spencer; one sister, Winnie Motich of Akron; 20 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two daughters, Betty Mace and Carolyn Mullins; one sister, Melva Icard; one brother, Victor Mace; one half-brother, Fred Church; and one half-sister,

Simon Tuttle, 84, died Tuesday, June 25, 2002, at SunBridge Care and Rehabilitation Center, Parkersburg.
He was born in Calhoun County, the son of the late Lewis and Mary Fowler Tuttle.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having served in North Africa, Sicily and Italy,
receiving three Purple Hearts and the Army Infantry Combat Badge. He was a self-employed building contractor for over 40 years and was active in Boy Scouts of America for over 20 years.
Surviving are two sons, Virgil L. Tuttle of Parkersburg and Lewis E. Tuttle of Rock Hill, S.C.; two daughters, Earlene Richards of Washington and Ilene Butcher of Freeport; one half-sister, Freda Roberts of Cleveland, Ohio; nine grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Velma Roberts Tuttle, in 1999; and one sister.

He and his wife owned and operated Wilson Supermarket, Parkersburg. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Spring Hill.
Surviving are one son, Paul R. Wilson of Mineral Wells and four grandsons.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie.

He was born in Calhoun County, the son of the late Jack and Lona Bell Dobbins Cottrell.

Alfred K. “Piff” Hays, 87, of Rockville, Md., died Thursday, July 4, 2002, at Rockville Nursing Home, Rockville.
He was born in Grantsville, the son of the late Robert E. and Kate Cain Hays.
He graduated from Parkersburg High School in 1932 and attended West Virginia Wesleyan College and University of Maryland. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He worked for the State of West Virginia for 32 years and retired as executive secretary of W.Va. Racing Commission in 1985. He was a member of BPOE, American Legion, and Trinity Episcopal Church.
Surviving are one son, Johnson Camden Hays of Boyds, Md.; one grandson, Mathew Camden Hays of Boyds; and one brother, Hugh E. Hays of Reston, Va.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Arnold L. Hays and Robert C. Hays, and two sisters, Lois Hendershot and Kathleen Boone.

She was born in Bluefield, the daughter of the late Jacob and Daisy Reese Myer.
She was former owner and retired as editor of The Calhoun Chronicle and was a member of Calhoun County Historical Society and Calhoun-Gilmer Writers Guild.
Surviving are one son, David O. Barrows of Camp Hill; one sister, Bes Dunning of Norfolk,
Va.; and one granddaughter, Elizabeth Grace Barrows of Cannonsburg, Pa.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Olin J. Barrows.

Woodrow E. Hall, 88, of Millstone, died Sunday, July 7, 2002, in Grafton General Hospital, Grafton.
He was born at Arnoldsburg, the son of the late Edwin and Matilda Adams Hall.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the Northern Solomon Islands and in the Philippines. He was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon, two Bronze Stars, World War II Victory Medal, Philippines Liberation Ribbon and Medal for Good Conduct. He retired as a supervisor for Con-solidated Natural Gas Corp. after 30 years of service. He attended Albert’s Chapel United Methodist Church, Sand Ridge, and was known for quoting, “The Flag Goes By,” throughout his life.
Surviving are one daughter, Sharon Hall Spencer of Fairmont; one sister, Hazel Ayers of
Parkersburg; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Woodrow Gerald Mace, 78, of Boaz, died Sunday, July 14, 2002, at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Parkersburg.
He was born in Calhoun County, the son of the late Clyde and Mary Angerstein Mace.
He was a 1940 graduate of Parkersburg High School and a Navy veteran of World War II. He retired from Corning Glass in 1981.
Surviving are three brothers, Denver Mace, Clyde “Buster” Mace and Conard “Bun” Mace; one sister, Mary Mace; eight children, Woody Mace, Sandra Flanagan, Cathy Spears, Penny Oldaker, Susan Richards, Lesa Richards, Woody Mace II and Tammy Burge; 13 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Della Mae Deaton Mace; seven brothers and sisters;
one son; and one grandson.
Graveside services were held at Friendly Cemetery, Friendly, with Dr. Bill Thomas officiating.

He was born in Clay County, the son of the late John G. and Elizabeth Tanner Starcher.
He was a Christian, a retired farmer, and former employee of W.Va. Dept. of Highways.
Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Jessie Metheney Starcher; six daughters, Azell Lucille King and fiancee Don Blaser of Creston, Ohio, Janet Sue Cunningham and husband Dale of Big Springs, Sandra Kay Douglas and husband Sammy of Clendenin, Linda Lou Cottrell and husband Lewis of Nebo, Brenda Lee Burnside and husband Elijah of Leetonia, Ohio, and Charlotte Ann Cadle and husband Rocky of Chloe; three sons, Charles Daris Starcher and wife Glenna of Reedy, Carl Gene Starcher of Cortland, Ohio, and Cecil Allen (Bunker) Starcher and wife Connie of Smithville, Ohio; three sisters, Hilda Douglas of Westfield Center, Ohio, Madge Lamb of St. Albans and Gladys Dague of Florida; four brothers, Dennis Starcher of Ridgeville, Ohio, Shirley Starcher of Nebo, Corbet Starcher of Creston, Ohio, and Roscoe Starcher of Seville, Ohio; 21 grandchildren; and 39 great-grand-children.

Martha May Gibson Blosser, 24, of Lower Salem, Ohio, died Thursday, July 11, 2002, at Marietta Memorial Hospital from injuries received in an auto accident.
She was born in Elkton, Md., the daughter of Bernice Gill of Princeton and Moses Gill of Anawalt.
She was a homemaker.
Surviving are her husband, Johnny Blosser; two children, Christa Gibson and Bridget Gibson at home; one sister, Midge Lula Woodard of Boone, N.C.; two brothers, Travis Gill of Anawalt and Moses Shelton of Elkton; several half brothers and sisters; and one nephew.

Tiffany Nichole Blosser, infant daughter of Johnny Blosser and the late Martha May Gibson Blosser of Lower Salem, Ohio, died Sunday, July 14, 2002, at Columbus Children’s Hospital from injuries received in an auto accident.
Surviving are two sisters, Christa and Bridget Gibson of Lower Salem; three brothers, Bobby, Brian and Billy Blosser of Annamoriah; paternal grandparents, David and Debbie Cunningham of Newark; maternal grandparents, Moses Gill of Anawalt and Bernice Gill of Princeton; paternal great-grandmother, Eileen Ledsome; step-great-grandmother, Mae Cunningham; maternal great-great-grandmother, Glenna Potter of Princeton; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Martha May Gibson Blosser as a result of an auto accident; and step-paternal great-grandfather, Frank Cunningham.

Eugene D. Hicks, 72, of Arnoldsburg, died Thursday, July 11, 2002, in Minnie Hamilton Health Care Center.
He was born in Roane County, the son of Rosie Falls Hicks of Arnoldsburg and the late Earl Hicks.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War and was a tool dresser in the oil and gas drilling industry. He was a member of VFW Post 5959, Grantsville.
Surviving in addition to his mother are his wife, Arlena Stump Hicks; two sons, Harles Eugene Hicks of Spencer and Edward D. Hicks of Arnoldsburg; one step-daughter, Loraine Bailey of North Carolina; two brothers, Dayton Hicks of Orma and James Hicks of Mt. Zion; two sisters, Loetoa Lienhen of Newark, Ohio, and Mary Hicks of Gassaway; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

UNA JARVIS
Una Jarvis, 91, of Clarksburg, died Monday, July 15, 2002, at United Hospital Center, Clarksburg.
She was the daughter of the late Claudius A. and Osceola Duffield Jarvis of Grantsville.
She graduated from West Virginia University, where she received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in home economics education. She served as a W.A.V.E. in World War II and was a home economics teacher at Washington Irving High School, Clarksburg, until retiring in 1973. She was a member of Stealey United Methodist Church, Clarksburg, and was honored by the Veterans Administration Hospital for 21 years of volunteer service.
Surviving are two sisters, Lois Jarvis Davis of Grand Rapids, Mich., and Ola Jarvis Stalford of Grantsville; numerous nieces and nephews, including Richard L. Jarvis of Grantsville; and great-nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by eight brothers and sisters.
Memorial services were held at Stealey U.M. Church. Burial was in Bethlehem Cemetery, near Grantsville.

Carolyn L. White, 60, of White Pine, died Monday, July 22, 2002, in Charleston Area Medical Center.
She was born in Calhoun County, the daughter of the late Royal and Alma Kelley White.
She was a member of Cherry Fork United Methodist Church. She had formerly worked for Rubber Fabricators, Inc., Grantsville, McCoy’s Service Center, Smithville, and as a case worker for Calhoun County Committee on Aging, Grantsville.
Surviving are three bothers, Ron White of Wakeman, Ohio, Joe White of LaGrange, Ohio, and Steve White of St. Albans.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Wava White, and two brothers, Gary and Benny White.
Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Rev. Alfred Hickman officiating. Burial was in Kight Cemetery, White Pine.

James Lester Snider, 91, of Grantsville, died Saturday, July 20, 2002, in Minnie Hamilton Health Care Center.
He was born at Yellow Creek, the son of the late Benjamin Sheridan and Rosella Saunders Snider.
He retired from Colonial Rubber Co., Ravenna, Ohio, and returned to Calhoun County in 1972 where he purchased a farm in Arnoldsburg and moved to Grantsville in 1991. He was a former resident of Miletree Nursing Home, Spencer, and Minnie Hamilton Health Care Center’s long term care unit.
Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Geneva V. Heiney Snider; two sons, Jim Snider of Brady Lake, Ohio, and Andy Snider of Arnoldsburg; three daughters, Doris J. Davis of Spencer, Sandra M. Ferrebee of Ravenna and Wanda S. Crawford of Lewisburg, N.C.; five sisters, Josephine Dean of Arkansas, Loretta Hosey and Emma Alton, both of Ohio, Sophie Smith of
Florida and Ruth Baum of Williamstown; 22 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one infant daughter, JoAnn Snider; one son, E. Ray Snider; one granddaughter, Rebecca Lynn Alderman; two sisters, Nellie Ferrell and Marie Rose; and two brothers, Blaine and Russell Snider.

J. Guy Wood, 83, of Millstone, died Wednesday, July 17, 2002, in Roane General Hospital.
He was born in Calhoun County, the son of the late Avery and Viola Umstead Wood.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was retired from Willard C. Starcher Co., Spencer. He was a member of Stoney Point Church, where he had taught Sunday School for 50 years. He was also a lay speaker.
Surviving are his wife, Velma Booher Wood; one son, John Wood and wife Kathy of Grantsville; four grandchildren, Angela Wood of Big Bend, Audrey Renee Wood of Mt. Zion and Chandra Lynn Wood and Benjamin John Wood, both of Grantsville; two great-grandchildren, Jada Ferrell and Brennan Ferrell, both of Grantsville; one sister, Thelma Wyer of Grantsville; and two brothers, Thomas Avery (Pete) Wood of Sand Ridge and O’Dell Wood of Stumptown.
He was preceded in death by one son, Ronald G. Wood; three brothers, Romeo, Denver and George Wood; and one half-sister, Belva Carpenter.

Oleta Blanche Blackburn, 93, of Burlington, died Wednesday, July 24, 2002, at Hampshire Memorial Hospital, Romney.
She was born at Grantsville, the daughter of the late Valentine Franklin and Azura Dell Stevens Riddel.
She was a homemaker, a former member of Burlington Volunteer Fire Dept. Auxiliary, and a Protestant.
Surviving are two daughters, Oleta D. Dawson and Eleanor F. McDonald; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles S. Blackburn, May 25, 1971; two sons, Samuel D. Blackburn and Charles F. “Mose” Blackburn; and two brothers, Dale W. Riddel and Benjamin Franklin Riddel.

She was born in Calhoun County, the daughter of the late Oscar and Elizabeth Roberts Hughes.
She was a member of Bryner Chapel Church and was a homemaker.

She was born in Calhoun County, the daughter of Delphia Cottrell Parsons of Orma and the late S.C. Parsons.

He was born in Logan, the son of the late Erma Chafin Dillon.
He was retired from Local Union #798 and worked as a welder on pipelines.
Surviving are one daughter, Jackie Collins-Frail of Richwood; one half-sister, Sue Ann Steele of Arnoldsburg; one half-brother, Bill Dillon of Arnoldsburg; and several nieces and nephews.

He was born in New Jersey, the son of Ethel Mae Richards Griffin of Big Bend and Robert O. Griffin of Pennsylvania.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War and was employed by Holbert’s Store, Big Bend.

She was born in Calhoun County, the daughter of the late Edward and Edith Grey Gibson Plant.
he was a retired business owner and homemaker and was a member of Enon Baptist Church.
Surviving are her husband, Chuck Kerby of Mt. Zion; two sons, Lawrence Kerby of Mt. Zion and Timothy Kerby and wife Marjorie of Berkeley Springs; one daughter, Deborah Riddel and husband Robert of Mt. Zion; six grandchildren, Ryan Riddel of Maui, Hawaii, Jessica Self of Dusk Camp, Kara Riddel, Moe Riddel and Britney Riddel, all of Mt. Zion, and Jessica Kerby of Berkeley Springs; one sister, Donna Erlewine of Grantsville; and several nieces and nephews.

Robert Lee Boggs, 61, of Minnora, died Saturday, Aug. 3, 2002, at Roane General Hospital.
He was born at Tariff, Roane County, the son of the late Kenna and Gertie Conley Boggs.
He retired as a rig superintendent after 35 years and was a farmer. He was a Christian and attended Milo Community Church.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Juanita Helmick Boggs; three sons, Kenna R. Boggs of Spencer and Mark Boggs and Robert L. Boggs II, both of Minnora; one daughter, Patricia Boggs Lunceford of Flatwoods; four brothers, Kenna Junior Boggs of Linden, Rondal Field of Wakemon, Ohio, and Jack Boggs and Noble Boggs, both of Orrville, Ohio; two sisters, Georgia Bateman of Worcher, Ohio, and Linia Faye Simmons of Summersville, Ohio; and seven grandchildren, Jennifer, Kayla, Stephane, Brittany, Coy, Amber and Heather Boggs.

RUBY WILKINSON
Rev. Ruby Inez Wilkinson, 90, died Saturday, Aug. 3, 2002, at her residence.
She was born in Sandyville, the daughter of the late Logan M. and Nellie J. Balderson Cheuvront.
She was a retired United Methodist minister with 63 years in churches in Calhoun, Wirt, Wood, Roane and Jackson counties. She was a member of Red Hill U.M. Church where she was an assistant Sunday School teacher and was in charge of the prayer chain. She was a member of Women’s Christian Temperance Union and was still active in delivering sermons at Worthington Nursing Home.
Surviving are two daughters, Bonnie Knapp of Parkersburg and Sandra K. Osgood of Moorefield; two brothers, Calvin Cheuvront of Parkersburg and Glen Cheuvront of Avon Park, Fla.; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Charles M. Wilkinson, whom she married in 1935; and seven brothers, Owen, Amos, Doyle, Normal, Dempsie, Lloyd and Delmar Cheuvront.
Services were held at Cedar Grove United Methodist Church, with Rev. Philip Dent officiating, assisted by Rev. Sue Jones and Rev. Frank Plybon, with a special presentation
to the family by Dr. Helen Bell. Burial was in Sunset Memory Gardens.
CARL RALPH MORRIS
Carl Ralph Morris, 83, of Grantsville, died Sunday, Aug. 4, 2002, in Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital, Parkersburg.
A lifelong resident of Calhoun County, he was born in Grantsville on Nov. 18, 1918, the son of the late L.J. and Edith Marshall Morris.
He served two separate terms in the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean War. He served one term as sheriff of Calhoun County. He was a graduate of WVU with a bachelor’s degree in geology and a minor in math. He was going into his 55th year as an entrepreneur, focusing mainly on oil and gas drilling and production, real estate, and publishing. He was still active every day as publisher of The Calhoun Chronicle and president of Calhoun Properties. He was an active member of Calhoun County Historical Society, First Baptist Church of Grantsville, the “Geritol Gang,” the WVU Emeritus Club, and West Virginia Press Association. He served on the boards of the Mollohan Foundation and the Glenville State College Foundation. He was a founding member of the Independent Oil and Gas Association and was on the Examiner’s Board for the West Virginia Oil and Gas Inspectors since 1964.
Surviving are his wife of 47 years, Helen Rampp Morris; seven children, Carleen Dixon of Washington, D.C., Barbara Full and husband Jim of Parkersburg, Joe Morris and wife Sandy of Seneca, Pa., Bob Morris and wife Jenny of South Charleston, Bill Morris and wife Kendi of Gallipolis, Ohio, Jim Morris and wife Lynn Gilbert of Grantsville and Sarah Rhodes and husband Todd of Hickory, N.C.; and 14 grandchildren, Matthew Dixon, Stan and Geoff Whitaker, Lucas, Drue and Aren Morris, Stevan, Katie and Susanna Morris, Will and Rachel Morris, and Michelle, Emily and Rebecca Rhodes.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Myrtha McCartney Morris, in 1951; one brother, Donald W. Morris; and one sister, Bernice Morris Stump.

She was the daughter of the late William Roy and Cora Cottrell Tanner.
Surviving are one son, Frederick Jr. Tanner of Grantsville; three brothers, Willard Tanner of Parkersburg, Virgil Tanner of Reedy and Roy Jr. Tanner of Charlotte, Mich.; two sisters,

Phyllis J. (Jackie) Kerby, 74, of Salem, died Saturday, Aug. 10, 2002, following an auto accident.
She was born in Calhoun County, the daughter of the late Roy and Lenna Whipkey Offutt.
She obtained her R.N. degree at Good Samaritan Hospital, Lexington, Ky., in 1948. She worked at Union Protestant Hospital, St. Mary’s Hospital and United Hospital Center, and at Salem College. She was a member of Vermont Baptist Church.
Surviving are one son, Robert Lee (Chip) Kerby of Salem; three daughters, Debbie Myers of New Martinsville, Barbara Kerby of Durham, N.C., and Saren Swentzel of West Union; and eight grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Robert Kerby, Mar. 2, 2001; and an infant sister, Betty Grace Offutt.

Jennings E. Edgell, 78, of LaGrange, Ohio, died Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2002, at Community Health Partners, Lorain, Ohio.
He was born in Cremo, the son of the late Andy and Rosa Edgell.
He served in Europe, Africa and the Middle East with the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II. He was employed as a job setter at Ford Motor Co., Brook Park, for 22 years before retiring in 1974. He was a mechanic and member of UAW Local 1250.

Michael Lee Bowen, 48, of Nicut, died Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2002, at Charleston Memorial Hospital.
He was born in Crescent City, Calif., the son of the late William Fred and Harriet Ruth Bowen.
He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War and was a graduate of Ohio Business College. He attended Northwest Presbyterian Church, Dublin, Ohio, and was a
disabled Teamster.
Surviving are his wife, Rhonda Bowen; six children, Robert Bowen of Cherryvale, Kan., William Fred Bowen of Aberdeen, Md., Ryan Bowen of Kansas, Nicole Bowen of Frankfort, Ohio; and Monica Wilson and Micahla Bowen, both of Nicut; one sister, Cheryl Ingram of Millersport, Ohio; one half-sister, Sandy Harbour of San Diego, Calif.; and two brothers,

Dorothy G. Nester, 96, of Richmond, Va., formerly of Millstone, died Sunday, Aug. 11, 2002.
She was the daughter of the late David and Alice Kelley of Cain Hill, Gilmer County, and was the last surviving member of her family.
She was a member of Knotts Memorial United Methodist Church, Grantsville, and Grantsville Chapter 73, Order of Eastern Star.
Surviving are one daughter, Nedra Grigg of Richmond, Va.; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by husbands, O.R. Griffith and Holly Nester; one daughter, Alice Ann Adams; four brothers, Tony, Deward, Harlan and Fay Kelley; and five sisters, Ila Davis, Leota Bush, Jessie Murphy, Pearl Rhoades and Thelma Curtis.
Graveside service was held at Stalnaker Cemetery, Glenville.

Gary Duane Simmons, 51, of Tanner, died Saturday, Aug. 10, 2002, at his home.
He was the son of Ethel Sims Simmons of Tanner and the late Levi Clark Simmons.
Surviving in addition to his mother are two daughters, Kyann Hiles of Charleston and Crystal Davis of Ohio; three sisters, Patty Shumaker of Ohio, Charlotte Wilson of Clarksburg and Anita Hartshorn of Tanner; one brother, Nelson Simmons of Glenville; two
grandchildren; and his girlfriend, Hazel Pritchard.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Raymond Simmons.

WAITMAN STUMP
Waitman Stump, 90, of Akron, Ohio, died Friday, Aug. 2, 2002.
He was born in Calhoun County, the son of the late Lorenzo Thomas “Doud” Stump and Dora Gainer Stump.
He graduated from Calhoun County High School in 1932. He worked for Lyle Ayers at the ESSO Bridge Filling Station, Grantsville, before going into the U.S. Navy in World War II and serving on the USS Indiana Battleship as Fireman First Class. In Akron, he was employed in home building and renovation until his retirement. He was a member of Hillwood Chapel, Akron.
Surviving are his wife, Nell; two daughters, Sharon Stump of Akron and Patricia Stump of Houston, Tex.; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by five sisters and brothers, Lorena S. Kelly, Jesse Taylor Stump, Dorfetta S. Hathaway, Arldia S. Kelly and Mattie S. Thompson.
His remains were cremated and the ashes were scattered on the farm where he grew up near Grantsville. A celebration of his life were held at Hillwood Chapel.

Claude L. “Pete” Boatright, 78, of Norton, Ohio, died Thursday, Aug. 15, 2002.
He was born in Grantsville, the son of the late Gay and Ona Gainer Boatright.
He graduated from Calhoun County High School and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a gunner’s mate. He retired from Ohio Brass with 40 years service as a millwright. He was a member of Sherman Church of Christ where he was an Elder Emeritus.
Surviving are his wife, Nina Mae Starcher Boatright; three sons, Claude “Larry” Boatright and Denis Paul Boatright, both of Barberton, Ohio, and Lonnie Joe Boatright of Canal Fulton, Ohio; one daughter, Luann Smith of Loganville, Ga.; five grandchildren; five brothers, Calvin Boatright of Grantsville, James Boatright of Manchester, Ohio, Odel Boatright of Barberton and Roy Boatright and Jack Boatright, both of Norton; and one sister, Paula Price of Barberton.

Mary E. Proudfoot, 91, died Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2002, in Mifflin Center, Shillington, Pa., where she had resided for one month.
She was born in Grantsville, the daughter of the late Asa B. and Virginia Barnes Harris.
She was a graduate of Calhoun County High School and received her bachelor of arts degree in elementary education from Glenville State College and did graduate work at West Virginia University. She was an elementary school teacher in Calhoun County for 21 years until her retirement. She was a member of Alpha Delta Kappa Teacher’s Sorority and First Baptist Church, Grantsville.
Surviving are one daughter, Jo Anne P. Rahn of Reading, Pa.; one sister, Geneva Harris Johnson of Trenton, Mich.; two grand-daughters; and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Thurl W. Proudfoot, in 1989.

Mamie Richards Frederick, 82, of Parkersburg, died Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2002, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital.
She was born in Big Springs, the daughter of the late Frank and Elizabeth Modesitt Richards.
She and her husband were self-employed in the mercantile business for several years, and employed by Dudley Florist. She was active in church and sang in the choir and various quartets. She was previously active in Belpre Senior Citizens and attended Parkersburg Broadway Nazarene Church.
Surviving are two daughters, Kathern Conley of Parkersburg and Shirley Stewart of Clearwater, Fla.; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one sister, Zanie Yost of Smithville.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Chester L. Frederick; four brothers, Carl, Earl, J.C. and Charles Richards; and one sister, Amie Richards Ward.

Georgia Gladys “Jo” Bowers, 87, of Slate, Wood County, died Thursday, Sept. 26, 2002, at
Eagle Point Nursing Home, Parkersburg.
She was born in Roane County, the daughter of the late Manuel Morford and Effie Leora Clark Bowers and granddaughter of the late Daniel Minter Bowers and Mary Armina Midcap Clark Bowers, who raised her.
She was educated in Calhoun County schools at Pink and Leatherbark and worked at the Sewing Room in Arnoldsburg. On Jan. 1, 1948, she moved to Slate.
Surviving are one niece whom she raised, Effie Fern Dickel of Parkersburg; one nephew,
Billy Ray Bowers of Vienna; two half-sisters, Bessie Lavina Bowers of Spencer and Opal Gladys Bowers Boggs of Mogadore, Ohio; and three sisters-in-law, Jean Kiser Bowers and Joyce Justice Bowers, both of Spencer, and Viola Layman Bowers of Atwater, Ohio.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Cassie Leora “Kay” Bowers Walbrown; one brother, Guy Minter Bowers; one nephew whom she raised, Irwin Manual Guy “Manny” Bowers; three half-brothers, Levi Franklin Bowers, Woodrow Walter Bowers and Morford Russell Bowers; two step-sisters, Goldie May Clowser Carpenter and Sadie Belle Carpenter Miller; one step-brother, Orland Gay Wright; and her step-mother, Armeda Margaret Buck Carpenter Bowers.

He lived most of his life in Arnoldsburg until his retirement. He was involved in timbering and farming, and was retired from W.Va. Dept. of Highways.
Surviving are one daughter, Sandra Lancaster and husband Joe of Grantsville; one son, Joe Starcher and wife Phyllis of Poca; one brother, Charles Knotts of Bickmore; four grandsons, Gregory S. Lancaster and wife Traci of Elizabeth, Kyle P. Lancaster and wife Tracy of Arnoldsburg, Kevin P. Lancaster of Grantsville and John Eugene Starcher and wife Pam of Woodlawn, Tenn.; one granddaughter, Julie Christine Garlow and husband Philip of Poca; four great-grandsons, Kaden Scott Lancaster and Jacob Lee Lancaster, both of Elizabeth, Philip Joseph Garlow of Poca and Joshua Peyton Starcher of Woodlawn; one great-granddaughter, Addison Marie Lancaster of Arnoldsburg; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Sturm Starcher; one brother, Seldon Starcher; and two sisters, Fay Cox and Mattie Vineyard.
Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg, with Tim Davis officiating. Burial was in Sturm Cemetery, Millstone.
DOYLE BALLENGEE
Doyle S. Ballengee, 80, of Grantsville, died Saturday, Oct. 5, 2002, in Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital, Parkersburg.
He was born in Braxton County, the son of the late French S. and Elva Jane McMorrow Ballengee.
He was retired from Babcock and Wilcox Co., Barberton, Ohio, and was a U.S. Air Force veteran of World War II. He was a member of Victory Baptist Church, Grantsville, and had a prison ministry in many communities for those who were incarcerated.
Surviving are one son, Carl Ballengee of Millstone; one daughter, Cheri Pittman of Grantsville; two brothers, Garland Ballengee of Duck and Lewis Ballengee of Vienna; one sister, Virginia McCoy of Brenham, Tex.; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Reda E. Ballengee.
Services were held at Victory Baptist Church with Rev. John Powell and Rev. Mike Worf officiating. Burial was in Perry James Cemetery, Frametown.

Mary Glenn Bohrer, 78, of Proctor, died Saturday, Sept. 14, 2002, in Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown.
She was born in Doddridge County, the daughter of the late Jim and Mary Dotson.
She was a 1942 graduate of Calhoun County High School and was retired from Corning. She was a homemaker and attended the Church of Christ.
Surviving are her husband, Charles Lynn Bohrer; two sons, Timothy Bohrer of Proctor and Dave Bohrer of Winston-Salem, N.C.; two brothers, Jack Dotson and Joe Dotson; one sister, Wilma Westfall; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Helen Greathouse and Avonell Fowler; and one great-grandchild, Deshaun Bohrer.
Services were held at Iams Funeral Home, New Martinsville, with Rev. Brent Ford officiating. Burial was in Northview Ceme-tery, New Martinsville.

Ezra Miller, 91, of Egypt Ridge, Roane County, died Sunday, Oct. 6, 2002, in Roane General Hospital.
He was born at Chloe, the son of the late Homer and Ruie Hall Miller.
He was a retired farmer.
Surviving are one sister, Delphia Davisson of Big Otter, and two brothers, Oscar Miller of Big Otter and Otis Miller of Grantsville.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Opal Deweese Miller.

Stella M. Stockwell, 89, of Akron, Ohio, died Sunday, Sept. 29, 2002, at Akron General Hospital.
She was born in Calhoun County, the daughter of the late Emory and Elizabeth Kirby Bennett.
Surviving are two sons, Bradley and wife Roberta of Nobe and Donald and wife Patricia of Orrville, Ohio; two daughters, Elizabeth of Lancaster, Ohio, and Alice of Akron; one brother, Woodrow Bennett and wife Chlorine of Florida; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one son, Emory William (Bill) Stockwell.
Memorial services were held at Upper Trace Fork Church. Cremation was provided by Akron Funeral Home.

Ernestine Poling Gregory, 71, of Cleveland, Ohio, died Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2002.
She was born in Millstone, the daughter of the late David and Orpha Schoolcraft Poling.
She was retired from Ford Motor Co., Cleveland.
Surviving are one son, Howard King of Cleveland; two daughters, Jane McGaha and Sue Helmick, both of Cleveland; eight grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Orla Marks of Miletree, Spencer, and Mabel Marks of Pine Creek; and two brothers, Junior and Guy Poling, both of Millstone.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Murl Poling Hall.

She was born at Nicut, the daughter of the late John Milton and Katheryn Siers King.
She was retired from Cleveland City School System.

James Wilson, 58, of Statesville, N.C., formerly of Arnoldsburg, died Friday, Oct. 11, 2002, in Jurney’s Assisted Living Center, Statesville.
He was born in Calhoun County, the son of the late Frank and Tava Harris Wilson.
Surviving are three brothers, Ronzel Wilson of Spencer, Deo Wilson of Stuart, Fla., and Frank Wilson, Jr., of Pennsboro; and five sisters, Clara Roberts of Hartville, Ohio, Fae Geismar of Nebo, Janice Wilson of Canton, Ohio, Judy Uplinger of Texas and Marlene Shelton of Seth.

Jacob Benjamin “Ben” Morningstar, 25, of Beckley, died Saturday, Oct. 12, 2002, as a result of an auto accident in Beckley.
He was the son of Michael Morningstar of Cox’s Mill and Maria Hess of Maryland.
He was a graduate of Gilmer County High School and attended Glenville State College. He was employed by Garfield’s Restaurant.

Wilma P. Nicholson, 94, of Jacksonville, Fla., died Friday, Oct. 11, 2002.
She was born in Industrial, the daughter of the late Rev. and Mrs. Clyde West.
She graduated from Alderson-Broaddus College, Philippi, with a degree in education. She taught school in Falling Rock, Kanawha County, and later taught piano to young residents of Grantsville. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Grantsville.
Surviving are one son, William of Jacksonville (with whom she resided); two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jennings; one brother, Leland; and one sister, Mildred.

She was born in Akron, Ohio, the daughter of the late Enos and Birta Nitz Offutt.
Surviving are her husband, Emory Cottrill, whom she married on Sept. 24, 1945; two sisters, Patsy Lautanen of Jefferson, Ohio, and Betty Hedrick of Brandenburg, Ky.; and two brothers, Donald Offutt of Jefferson, Ohio, and Duane Offutt of Andover, Ohio.

He was born at Tanner, the son of the late Columbus D. and Izen Anderson Cain.
He was retired as an administrator at TRW, Valve Division.

Hedge Stump, 87, of Collins Run, Glenville, died Friday, Oct. 18, 2002, at his residence.
He was born in Gilmer County, the son of the late Okey and Wonnie Susan Minney Stump.
He was an Army veteran of World War II, had nine years of service with Calhoun Super Service, Grantsville, and retired from Glenville State College Maintenance Dept. He was a deacon at Hardman Fork Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Maggie Frashure Stump, whom he married Mar. 14, 1947; two sons, Gary Stump of Manheim, Pa., and Randy Lee Stump of Normantown; one sister, Fanny Reaser of Burnsville; one foster sister, Carol Kimble of Glenville; one foster brother, Larry Jr. Cox of Rosedale; one son-in-law, Ray Boggs of Parkersburg; and four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Hilda Boggs, on Oct. 5, 2001; and three sisters.

R. Muriel Westfall, 90, of Exchange, died Friday, Oct. 18, 2002, in Braxton County Memorial Hospital.
She was born in Greenbrier County, the daughter of the late Marion and Alice Jones Arnold.
She was a homemaker, a former employee of Ben Franklin Store, Sutton, and a member of Sunrise Church.

Wilma Dotson Westfall, 84, of Triplett Road, Spencer, died Friday, Oct. 25, 2002, in Roane General Hospital.
She was born in Tyler County, the daughter of the late James and Mary Williams Dotson.
She was a former president of Roane General Hospital Auxiliary where she volunteered for 29 years. She was a former employee of Kellwood Industries, Spencer, with 14 years of service. She was a charter member of Spencer Church of Christ.
Surviving are three sons, Edward C. Westfall, Jr., and James H. Westfall, both of Spencer, and Bernard G. Westfall of Morgantown; one daughter, Sandra Westfall Tupes of Charlotte, N.C.; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

A.C. “Red” Holpp, 83, of Wilkesboro, N.C., died Friday, Nov. 1, 2002, at his home.
He was born in Freed, the son of the late John W. and Arzana H. Holpp.
He graduated from Calhoun County High School and West Virginia University, and retired from the Agricultural Extension Service after serving in West Virginia, Virginia and North Carolina. He later worked with orchardists in Wilkes and Alexander counties in North Carolina.
Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Doris Ford Holpp; two daughters, Leah Margaret “Peggy”

Dennis W. Pepper, 87, of Vidor, Tex., formerly of Munday, died Thursday, Oct. 31, 2002, in Christus St. Elizabeth Hospital, Texas.
He was born in Munday, the son of the late Silas Alfred and Kanzada Sceese Pepper.
He was a retired general contractor.

Goldie E. Lamb Rice, 83, of Gauley Bridge, died Sunday, Oct. 27, 2002, in Montgomery General Hospital, Montgomery.
She was born at Chloe, the daughter of the late Dr. C.R. and Nannie Conley Lamb.
She had operated Dominion Hotel, Glove, Ariz., for a number of years as well as Conley Grill and Wiseman’s Dept. Store, Gauley Bridge. She was a member of Gauley Bridge Baptist Church, Ted H. Christian VFW Auxiliary, Gauley Bridge Garden Club, and Gauley Bridge Historical Society.
Surviving are three sisters, Hazel Christian of Gauley Bridge, Locie Dye of Chloe and Maysel Snyder of Scottsdale, Ariz..; two brothers, Creed Lamb of South Charleston and Jim Lamb of St. Albans; and her caregivers, Kim Houghton and Brenda Lanham of Gauley Bridge and Joshua Houghton of Martinsburg.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Leon Rice; three sisters, Ruby Finley, Nell Downey and Gertrude Grogg; and one brother, Clifford Lamb.

She was born in Braxton County, the daughter of the late Worthy and Electa Hamric.

Ralph E. Wells, 92, of Big Springs, died Sunday, Nov. 10, 2002, at his residence.
He was born in Yawke, the son of the late Charles Milton and Lydia Jane Williamson Wells.
He was a former barber in Smithville and Grantsville and worked for South Penn (Pennzoil) when he retired. At age 65, he began working for Bowser (Megan Utility) as a pumper. He quit working at age 80. He was a member of Beech Valley United Methodist Church, Big Springs.
Surviving are one daughter, Patricia Ann Wells Frederick; one son-in-law, George Frederick; two grandsons, Rodney Frederick and Gregory Frederick; two granddaughters, Debbie Walker and Sherry Price; seven great-grandchildren, Jessica and Jeremy Frederick, Heather and Matthew Walker, and Amanda, Greg and Michael Frederick; and two great-great-grandchildren, Dakota Snider and Garrett Frederick.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Winifred (Winnie) Myers Wells; and two

Kathryn S. Leavitt, 82, of Parkersburg, died Monday, Nov. 11, 2002, at her residence.
She was born in Calhoun County, the daughter of the late Clyde Austin and Myrtle Ada Busch Snider.
She retired after 25 years of service as office manager for Associated Anesthesiologists. She was a charter member of Emmanuel Baptist Church, Parkersburg, an active member of Bonnie White Circle and a charter member of Mu Gamma Chapter of Alpha Iota Sorority.
Surviving are her husband, Ralph Joseph Leavitt; two daughters, Kathy Leavitt Albright of Parkersburg and Judy Leavitt Devlin of Houston, Tex.; two granddaughters; four sisters, Violet Elliot of Mineral Wells, E. Virginia Schaefer and Marjorie Neale, both of

Clifford W. Butler, 88, of Spencer, died Friday, Nov. 15, 2002, at Jackson General Hospital, Ripley.
He was born at Beech, the son of the late Roy and Martha Lowers Butler.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and was an oil field worker and farmer. He attended Fairview Church and Leatherbark Community Church.
Surviving are five sisters, Lura Webb and Georgia Atkinson, both of Spencer, Rushie Oglesbee of Sanduskey, Ohio, and Virginia Parsons and Stella Hall, both of Parkersburg; one brother, Donzel Butler of Minnora; and one foster son, Richard Burrows of Illinois.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Edna Butler; his second wife, Beulah Butler; three brothers, Ray Brannon and Dolpha and Nelson Butler; and three sisters, Gae Smith, Lear Wears and Genevieve Butler.

CLEO ROBINSON
Cleo D. Robinson, 77, of Weirton, died Monday, Nov. 11, 2002, at Weirton Medical Center.
He was born in Russett, the son of the late Homer and Maude Boon Robinson.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and a member of Weirton Steel 25-Year Club. He retired from Weirton Steel after 28 years of service as turn foreman. He was a member of Halls Hunting Club and Jefferson Hunting Club, and Trinity United Methodist Church, New Cumberland, and Trinity U.M. Men.

Jennie Miracle, 95, a resident of Ohio Valley Health Care, Parkersburg, died Tuesday, Nov.
19, 2002, in the nursing facility.
She was born in Grantsville, the daughter of the late Thomas and Rachel Elliott Summers.
She retired in 1969 with 25 years of service with Corning Glass Co. as an inspector. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, where she was in Star of Hope Circle and Goodwill Sunday School class.
Surviving are one son, A. Claude Miracle of Vienna; three daughters, Annalea (Nan) Miracle, Jean Martin and Sue Palmer, all of Parkersburg; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Nolan R. Miracle in 1970; four brothers, Lewis Church, Jack Church, Frank Summers and Fred Summers; and three sisters, Nellie Norman, Pearl Osborne and Churl Hickman.

Mable Clara Bennett, 94, of Grantsville, died Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2002, at Minnie Hamilton Health Care Center. She had been a resident of long term care for five years.

She owned and operated Bennett’s Nursing Home on Hathaway St., Grantsville, for many years. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Order of Eastern Star, American Legion Auxiliary, VFW Auxiliary and Rebekah Lodge, all of Grantsville.

Raymond C. Criss, 81, of Vienna, died Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2002, at his residence.
He was born in Calhoun County, the son of the late Samuel Mack and Bertha Nelson Criss.
He was a World War II decorated Army veteran having participated with the 4th Armored Division at the Battle of the Bulge. He retired after 35 years service with DuPont Washington Works’ transportation department.
Surviving are one son, Donald R. Criss of Munday; two daughters, Diana R. Workman of
Leachtown and Carla S. Brooks of Vienna; one brother, William Criss of Vienna; eight grand-children; and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was a member of Knotts Memorial United Methodist Church, Grantsville.

VONDA GUNN
Vonda Holpp Gunn, 82, of Mt. Zion, died Thursday, Nov. 28, 2002, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital, Parkersburg, after a struggle with cancer.
She was born in Yellow Creek, the daughter of the late Frank and Etta Haught Holpp.
She taught school for a number of years, beginning in a one-room school on Pine Creek and ending her teaching career at Calhoun County High School, and retiring as Director of Federal Programs for the Calhoun County School System.
She was longtime chairperson of Mt. Zion Community Park and an active member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, serving as church treasurer for over 40 years. She had also held offices on the Church Administrative Council, United Methodist Women and Calhoun Cooperative Parish.
She was active in the Democratic Party and was former chairperson of the Calhoun County
Democratic Executive Committee. She had helped her husband in the store business at Mt. Zion for many years, was active in Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority, and served as a member of the board of directors of Calhoun Banks.
Surviving are her husband, Donald Gunn; one son, Donald Poe Gunn; one sister, Fern Weaver; one brother, Lewis Holpp of Parkersburg; much loved granddaughter, Dayna Lynn; daughter-in-law, Sherry Gunn; two step-grandchildren, Eric Thompson and Kelly Little; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Rev. Rick Swearengin officiating. Burial was in Mt. Zion Cemetery.

Harless Camp, 83, died Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2002, at Essex of Tallmadge, Ohio.
He was born in Gauley Bridge and lived in the Akron, Ohio, area most of his life. He retired as a truck driver in 1981 and was a member of the Teamsters Union.
Surviving are one son, John Camp of Brimfield, Ohio; two daughters, Barbara Ball and Margaret Holsberry, both of Akron; 13 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grand-daughter; three brothers; two sisters; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Guy D. Miller, 86, of Massillon, Ohio, died Friday, Nov. 29, 2002, in Mercy Medical Center, Canton, Ohio.
He was born at Minnora, the son of the late John Tilden and Cora Belle Adams Miller.
He was a 1935 graduate of Calhoun County High School and a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of the Pacific Theatre during World War II. He retired in 1985 as an oil and gas field driller in West Virginia, Kentucky, Pennsylvania and Ohio. He was a member of Canton Baptist Temple, where he served as an usher for 17 years.
Surviving are one son, Robert L. Siers of Chattanooga, Tenn.; three grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Violet S. Miller, Dec. 12, 1996; three brothers, Harry C., Gordon J. and Lemuel S. Miller; and two sisters, Mary Duffield and Virginia Miller.

Veon Crawford, 86, formerly of Parkersburg, died Monday, Dec. 2, 2002, at Alliance Personal Home Care, Grafton.
He was born in Calhoun County, the son of the late Stephen Leslie and Hattie Poling Crawford.
He was a U.S. Air Force veteran and owned and operated Crawford Appliance Services for many years. He was a member of Junior Order of United American Mechanics, United Commercial Travelers of America, and Park-view United Methodist Church, Parkersburg.
Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Bonnidene Starkey Crawford, whom he married Dec. 31, 1943; two sons, David Steven Crawford and wife Kandes of Elkins and Rev. Larry Veon Crawford and wife Rev. Ann Crawford of Grafton; three grandchildren, Stephanie Haynes and husband Voras of Elkins, Larry Crawford of Lexington, Ky., and Rachel Wilkinson and husband Brian of Charleston; three great-grandchildren, Nicholas Crawford Haynes and Aiden and Jacob Wilkinson; one brother, Harold William Crawford of Parkersburg; and two sisters, Juanita Chevront of Parkersburg and Evadeen Sellers of Kennewick, Wash.

Charles M. Harold, 94, of Davisville, died Thursday, Dec. 5, 2002, in St. Joseph’s Hospital, Parkersburg.
He was born in Oka, Calhoun County, the son of the late William and Lucy B. Ellison Harold.
He was a former school bus driver in Roane County, served as deputy assessor from 1943-1945, and was a former employee of Union Carbide Corp., Alloy. He was an operating engineer and retired in 1985 after 18 years of service with Columbia Gas. He had been a member of Campbell Lodge 101, IOOF, Spencer, since 1948, and was a member of Kanawha United Methodist Church, Davisville.
Surviving are two grandsons, John M. Tallman of Pace, Fla., and Brian M. Tallman of Arlington, Wash.; three granddaughters, Ruth E. Robrecht of Parkersburg, Mary E. Starcher of Williamstown and Cathy L. Nelson of Davisville; 14 great-grandchildren; 13 great-great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Marjorie Lane of Morgantown, Lydia Lewis of Windham, Ohio, and Dorothy Whaley of Greenwood, La.

Colista A. Alfred, 64, of Orrville, Ohio, died Monday, Nov. 11, 2002, at Dunlap Hospital, Orrville.
She was born in Orrville, the daughter of the late Harry Richard and Helen Studer Manson.
She was a 1956 graduate of Orrville High School and had previously worked at Orrville Milk Co. She had been employed as a bookkeeper at First National Bank, Orrville, for 20 years, retiring in 2000. She was a member of United Church of Christ, Orrville.
Surviving are her husband, Jimmy D. Alfred, whom she married on July 18, 1948, in Orrville; one son, Eric Alfred of Orrville; her mother-in-law, Chloe Alfred of Orma; and two
grandchildren.

Rev. Dorsey Marks, 99, of Orrville, Ohio, died Saturday, Dec. 14, 2002, at Dunlap Hospital, Orrville.
He was born at Leatherbark, Calhoun County, the son of the late Thomas G. and Alice Pierpoint Marks.
He was an ordained Baptist minister for over 50 years and pastored churches in several counties in West Virginia. He had a radio ministry in Spencer and was a member of Spencer Tabernacle.
Surviving are four sons, Grover Marks of Pennsylvania, Albert Marks of Orrville, Ronald Marks of Seville, Ohio, and Gene Marks of Middleburg Heights, Ohio; eight grandchildren; and several great- and great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife of one year, Pearl Wagner Marks (Grover’s mother); his second wife of 73 years, Sylvia Sawyer Marks; one son, Denzil Marks; one great-granddaughter, Becky Quick; four brothers; and two sisters.

He was the son of the late Roy and Belle Cunningham.
He was retired from Schott Glass after 42 years of service and was a Methodist.
Surviving are his wife, Patty Cunningham; three sons, Mitch Cunningham, Mike Cunningham and Mark Cunningham; one daughter, Kathy Richards; two sisters, Kit Nutter and Edna Friend; and one brother, David Cunningham.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Opal Nicholas, and six brothers, Sterling, Jennings, Robert, Leroy, George and baby Martin Cunningham.

She was a member of St. Andrews United Methodist Church. She worked for West Virginia University-Parkersburg for over 20 years and was the former owner of Dave’s Video.

She was born in Roane County, the daughter of the late Royce and Hazel A. Miller Roberts Lamp.
She was a graduate of Normantown High School where she was a cheerleader. She graduated from Glenville State College and received her master’s degree from West Virginia University. She retired after many years as an elementary teacher in Calhoun County, where she was the first special education teacher and later served as coordinator of the special education program. She was a member of Victory Baptist Church, Grantsville.
Surviving are one son, Donald S. Pitts of Grantsville; one daughter, Robin Hannah of Parkersburg; one brother, Joe Roberts of Coolville, Ohio; five grandchildren; and four great-grand-children.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald M. Pitts in April, 2001; one brother, Jack Roberts; and one grandson, Jason Todd Hannah.

He was a Spc. Seaman in the U.S. Navy and was a lifetime member of American Legion Post 547, Monroeville. He was a machinist at Magic Chef.

She was born in Calhoun County, the daughter of the late Bernard and C.S. “Susie” Ferrell Price.
She owned and operated Wayne’s Grocery, Tarriff, for 23½ years, and was postmaster at Tariff Post Office. She was a charter member and Past Matron of Linden Chapter No. 152, O.E.S., and a member and former Sunday School teacher at Henry’s Fork Baptist Church, Tariff.
Surviving are two daughters, Virginia Hall of Ashland and Betty Wilson of Vienna; five grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, O.H. “Oral” Wayne, in 1967; one son, Billy Joe
Wayne, serving with the U.S. Navy, in 1954; and one sister, Lettie Smith.
Services were held at John H. Taylor Funeral Home, Spencer, with Pastor F.R. White officiating. Burial was in Clover Cemetery.
MYRTLE HUPP
Myrtle S. Hupp, 76, of Parkersburg, died Monday, Dec. 23, 2002, in Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital.
She was born in Orma, the daughter of Hattie Starcher of Ohio and the late Reed Starcher.
She was a member of Crossroads United Methodist Church and was retired from Public Debt after several years of service. She had previously worked for the Internal Revenue Service and Walker Machinery.
Surviving in addition to her mother are two daughters, Lisa Wigal of Belleville and Tina Buskirk of Parkersburg; two brothers, Winfield “Fields” Starcher of Orma and Francis “Frank” Starcher of Warren, Ohio; one sister, Amanda Stonebraker of Girard, Ohio; and four grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Edward Hupp, in 1970; and one half-sister, Grace Richards.
Services were held at Leavitt Funeral Home, Parkersburg, with Rev. John Frum officiating. Burial was in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Parkersburg.
DENVER YOAK
Denver R. (Ron) Yoak, 70, of Clarksburg, formerly of Big Bend, died Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2002, at Veterans Administration Medical Center, Clarksburg.
He was born in Calhoun County, the son of the late John W. and Eva B. Richards Yoak.
He was a U.S. Army veteran and served in Alaska, and was a former elementary school teacher in Ritchie and Roane counties.
Surviving are three brothers, Clifford Yoak of Parkersburg, Ralph Yoak of Colorado and Herbert Yoak of Big Bend; and four sisters, Garnet Chernesky and June Cunningham, both of Cleveland, Ohio, Betty McVaney of Clarksburg and Beverly Robinson of Jonesboro, Ga.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Victor Yoak.
Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Rev. Randy Wilson officiating. Burial was in Yoak Cemetery, Big Bend.
DONNA JEAN MAXWELL
Donna Jean Maxwell, 60, of Mentor, Ohio, died Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2002, in Lake Hospital, Willoughby, Ohio.
She was born in Grantsville, the daughter of the late Oren and Pearl Clayton.
She was a member of Word of Grace Church, Chesterland, Ohio, and was a homemaker.
Surviving are her husband of 39 years, Fred Maxwell; three sons, Terry Maxwell of Euclid,
Ohio, Gerald Maxwell of Cleveland, Ohio, and Anthony N. Maxwell of Eastlake, Ohio; five grandchildren; one brother, Jerry Clayton of Walhonding, Ohio; two half-brothers, David Wright and John Wright, both of Lyndhurst, Ohio; one step-sister, Norita Ballato of Weirton; one step-brother, Lloyd Wright, Jr., of Fleming, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her step-father, Lloyd Wright, Sr.; one sister, Caroline Petty; and two step-sisters, Elva Vaughan and Leota Yoak.
Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Rev. Robert Nicholas officiating. Burial was in Job’s Temple Cemetery, near Glenville.
JESSIE ELEANOR BRANNON
Jessie Eleanor Brannon, 89, of Arnoldsburg, died Friday, Dec. 27, 2002, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital, Parkersburg.
She was born in Grantsville, the daughter of the late Bailey G. and Jessie Stalnaker Stump.
She was a graduate of Glenville State College and was a retired teacher with 20 years of experience in Calhoun County. She was a life member of West Virginia Association of Retired School Employees, member of Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority, charter member of Phoebe Cunningham Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution, 50-year member of Order of Eastern Star, Chapter 73, Grantsville, where she had served as Past Worthy Matron, and member of Louisa Chapel United Methodist Church, Arnoldsburg.
Surviving are one son, Vere Brannon and wife Susie of Arnoldsburg; two daughters, Doris Davis and husband Bradley of Harrisville and Juanita Berdine and husband Robert of Arnoldsburg; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Victor C. Brannon, in 1980, and one daughter, Dorthy Hayhurst.
Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg, with Rev. William Morrison officiating. Burial was in Brannon Cemetery, Arnoldsburg.
LESTER KING
Lester Wellington King, 89, of Orma, died Friday, Dec. 27, 2002, at his home.
He was born in Calhoun County, the son of the late Jerry and Ora Vankirk King.
He was a longshoreman in Cleveland for many years and was a former coal miner.
Surviving are his wife, Evelyn Raye Gilkeson King; three sons, Blaine King of Orma, William R. (Rusty) Austin of Old Town, Md., and Wade A. Austin of Woodriver, Neb.; two daughters, Sandie Clifton of Patrick Springs, Va., and Leslie Truelove of Cleveland, Ga.; one foster daughter, Lisa Kincaid of Florida; three sisters, Goldia Campbell of Belpre, Ohio, Ellen Laffree of Harrisville and Mary Ide of Columbus, Ohio; 14 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Garnet Heinzman King; one daughter, Billy Jean King Sypolt; and three infant siblings.
Services were were held at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg, with Rev. Larry Vaughan
officiating. Burial was in King Cemetery, Nicut.
LEAH STURM
Leah B. Sturm, 92, of Millsboro, Dela., formerly of Mt. Zion, died Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2002.
She was the daughter of the late Howard and Arminda Anderson Brannon.
She taught in a one-room school in Calhoun County in the early 1930’s and was a homemaker. She was a member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church and was active in community affairs.
Surviving are three daughters, Joan Gherke and Debbie Moore, both of Millsboro, and Carolyn Hatfield of Georgetown, Dela.; one son, Richard B. Sturm of Weston; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one sister, Birdie Haugh of Florida; and one brother, Lenna H. Brannon of Texas; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Otho E. Sturm, on June 26, 1981, and one sister, Eula Larrison.
Memorial service was held at Bay Shore Community Church, Gumboro, Dela. Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville. Burial was in Mt. Zion Cemetery.
ELIZABETH RICHARD
Elizabeth O’Connor Richard, 77, died Monday, Dec. 30, 2002, at her home in Rosedale.
She was born in Derby, Conn., the daughter of the late James and Clara Pepe O’Connor.
She graduated from Derby High School and Bridgeport Hospital School of Nursing, and received a B.S.N. from The Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C., and an M.S.N. from Yale University. After two years in the Army Nurse Corps, she was a nurse in Connecticut, New York, Washington and Maryland, and taught nursing at University of Connecticut, University of Maine and Glenville State College. She was a member of Sigma Theta Tau International Nursing Honor Society and Good Shepherd Roman Catholic Church, Glenville.
Surviving are two children, Rita Richard of Rosedale, with whom she resided, and Major Marty Richard of Sandwich, Mass.; two sisters, Kathleen Burgess of New Smyrna Beach, Fla., and Mary Cink of Tequesta, Fla.; one brother, Miles O’Connor of Tequesta, Fla.; and two grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Leo F. Richard, who died May 12, 1989, and one sister, Carol Ginnetti.
Services were held at Good Shepherd Roman Catholic Church, with Father Edwin Daschbach, SVD, officiating. Burial was in Maine Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery, Augusta, beside her late husband.
FLORENCE WILSON
Florence May Riddle Wilson, 93, of Grantsville, died Monday, Dec. 30, 2002, at her
residence.
She was the daughter of the late Charlie and Maud Gay Merritt Richards.
She was a member of Pennsboro Church of Christ.
Surviving are four sons, Junior Riddle of Grafton, Ohio, Hoy Riddle and Harold Riddle, both of Elyria, Ohio, and Eugene Riddle of Pennsboro; one daughter, Bernice Tallhamer of Grantsville; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, William A. Riddle; her second husband, Russell K. Wilson; two brothers; and three sisters.
Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Rev. Randy Wilson officiating. Burial was in Chestnut Grove Cemetery.
DENA AYERS
Dena Burrows Ayers, 72, of Woodsfield, Ohio, died Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002, in Barnesville Hospital, Ohio.
She was born in Grantsville, the daughter of the late James Spencer and Delta Starcher Burrows.
She was a plastic molder for Marx Toys and was a Methodist.
Surviving are two daughters, Lena Vallelonga of Powhatan Point, Ohio, and Joyce Starkey of Woodsfield; one son, Austin Eugene Ayers of Clarington, Ohio; one brother, Coleman Burrows and wife Katherine of Grantsville; one sister, Ernestine Gainer and husband Garrett of Grantsville; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Services were held at Grisell Funeral Home, Clarington, with Rev. Diana Guyette officiating. Burial was in Clarington Cemetery.
DONALD DAVIS
Donald Clark Davis, 44, of St. Marys, formerly of Grantsville, died Sunday, Dec. 29, 2002, at his residence.
He was the son of John and Arnell Wilson Davis of St. Marys and attended Calvary Baptist Church, St. Marys.
Surviving in addition to his parents are one brother, Denver L. Davis of St. Marys; one uncle, Opha Wilson of St. Marys; and one aunt, Ila Hildreth of Coatsville, Ind.
Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Rev. Michael Reynolds officiating. Burial was in Nobe Cemetery.
OWEN PARK BOWSER
Owen Park Bowser, 88, of Miami, Fla., died Thursday, Dec. 26, 2002.
He was born in Calhoun County, the son of the late Alta and Park Bowser.
He graduated from Parkersburg High School and from Carnegie Institute of Technology, where he earned his degree in engineering and played on the football team. He was a test engineer with General Electric Co., Schenectady, N.Y., for a brief period before returning to West Virginia to operate the family-owned oil and gas properties along with his two brothers. During World War II, he served as a naval officer in the Admiralty Islands in the Southwest Pacific. He assisted in conversions to natural gas systems and managed systems in the Miami and Orlando areas and joined the Florida Service Commission as a safety and systems engineer in 1972 until his retirement in 1998. He was a member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Coral Gables, Fla., where he served as an usher and a member of the outreach committee and the Bishop Gray Home committee.
Surviving are two sisters, Mary Bowser Bickel and Winifred Bowser, both of Parkersburg; one daughter, Anna Nichols of Vienna; one son, Fred of Beloit, Kan.; one step-son, Philip Snyder of Miami; one step-daughter, Leslie Brock of Georgetown, Ky.; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Helen Bowser; his second wife, Mary Lutz Bowser; one son, Owen; one daughter, Helen; one sister, Margaret; and two brothers, Paul and Bretney.
Memorial service was held at St. Thomas Episcopal Church.
SHARON ROSE WHITE
Sharon Rose White, 25, of Frametown, died Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2002, in an auto accident near Servia, Braxton County.
She was born in Roane County, the daughter of Bill Robert and Janet Vanburen White of Frametown. She was a member of Hill Fork Community Church, Rosedale.
Surviving in addition to her parents are one daughter, Beverly Renae Bosley; four brothers, Billy Joe White, Daniel Blaine White and Jonathan Lee White, all of Frametown, and James Robert White of Gassaway; and her maternal grandfather, David Vanburen of Rosedale.
Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg, with Rev. Rick Hart officiating.
Burial was in Mill Fork Cemetery, Rosedale.
