Lorraine “Lori” Bower Hawk, 72, of Akron, Ohio, died Saturday, Mar. 29, 2006.

She was daughter of the late Gerald and Dessel Bower.

Surviving are two sons, Dan Riggle and Mark Hawk; one granddaughter, Samantha; and many cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by one son, Mike Riggle.

Memorial service will be held Tuesday, May 27, 1 p.m., at Mt. Zion Cemetery, with Rev. Mary Zimmer officiating.

BETTY LOU PRICE

Betty Lou Price, 70, of Mannington, died Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2006, at her home.

She was born at Fairmont, the daughter of the late Arthur and Mollie Ervin Smith.

She had been employed in the clothing manufacturing industry.

Surviving are four sisters, Helen Hayes and Barbara Hayes, both of Mannington, and Hilda Erlewine and Delores Sapp, both of Malone, Tex.; one brother, Ohlen Heck, Jr., of Clarksburg; and several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harley Price, and two sisters, Ella Smith and Cora Reed.

Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg, with Rev. Rick Metheney officiating. Burial was in Liberty Hill Cemetery, Arnoldsburg.

EMOGENE GAE ‘Jeanie’ BRITTON

Emogene Gae “Jeanie” Britton, 56, of Reedy, died Saturday, Jan. 7, 2006, in Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown.

She was born in Calhoun County, the daughter of Ernest Nicholas of Spencer and the late Goldie Marks Nicholas.

She was a homemaker and a former employee of Kellwood Corp. She was a member of Good Hope Baptist Church, Reedy, where she had served as secretary of the Reedy Sunday School Convention for 35 years, a member of Good Hope Singers, and a former Sunday School teacher. She was a member of Reedy Lion’s Club.

Surviving, in addition to her father, are her husband of 35 years, James R. “Jim” Britton; one son, Ronnie A. Britton of Reedy; and two grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Paul D. Nicholas.

Services were held in Good Hope Baptist Church, Reedy, with Rev. John Price officiating, and burial in Good Hope Cemetery.

 

JANE LOUISE POLING

Jane Louise Umstead Poling, 46, of Millstone, died Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2006, at Minnie Hamilton Health Care Center.

She was born in Petersburg, the daughter of Mary Louise Gillespie Umstead of Mathias and the late David Umstead.

Surviving are her husband, Timothy Poling; one daughter, Sheila Poling; one grandson; two sisters, Judith Lynn Fuller of Durbin and Jennifer Lee White; three nephews; and two nieces.

Graveside services were held at Poling-Marks Cemetery, Millstone, with David Fuller officiating.

CARROLL ‘Buck’ HICKS

Carroll Paul “Buck” Hicks, 64, formerly of Orma, died Sunday, Jan. 8, 2006, at The Arbors Nursing Home, Marietta, Ohio.

He was born in Calhoun County, the son of the late Iras B. and Cora Rinehart Hicks.

He was a member of Milo Methodist Church and was employed by Houchin Construction Co., Arnoldsburg.

Surviving are three children, Mike and Timothy Hicks of Arnoldsburg and Lynn Blosser of Orma; three brothers; four sisters; and seven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.

Graveside memorial service was held.

AYDON CRUISE ACKLEY

Aydon Cruise Ackley, infant, died Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2006, at Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown.

He was born Dec. 20, 2005, the son of Leann M. Dickey and Gary L. Ackley of Mt. Zion.

Surviving in addition to his parents are his maternal grandmother and step-grandfather, Geraldine and Danny Mace of Leatherbark; maternal grandfather, Stoney Dickey of Icard, N.C.; paternal grandparents, Ed and Brenda Ackley of Grantsville; paternal step-grandmother, Brenda Ackley of Glenville; great-grandmothers, Opal Estep of Glenville and Wyvonda Nicholson of Grantsville; aunts, Jennifer Blair of Creston, Megan Ackley of Grantsville and Rebecca Stanley of Icard; and uncles, Eddie Ackley of Clarksburg and Jason Dickey of Mt. Zion.

Private family services were held, with burial in Hunt Cemetery, Big Bend.

THELMA LOURENA JONES

Thelma Lourena Jones, 90, of Sand Fork, died Thursday, Jan. 12, 2006, at Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital, Weston.

She was born in Gilmer County, the daughter of the late Ethnie Adams and Bertha Queen.

Surviving are two daughters, Manoka D. Turner of Sand Fork, with whom she lived, and Rita Jones Hardman of Marietta, Ohio; one brother, Myron Adams of Brookville, Ohio; one sister, Alta Hammon of Wadsworth, Ohio; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil Jones, whom she married on Nov. 15, 1932; two sons; one daughter; one granddaughter; four brothers; and six sisters.

Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville. Burial was in Collins Community Cemetery, Stumptown.

JENNINGS CONLEY

Jennings B. Conley, 77, of Looneyville, died at home on Friday, Jan. 13, 2006.

He was born at Uler, the son of the late Ed and Bessie Hunt Conley.

He was a member of Local 1353 Laborer’s Union, Linden Lodge #83, A.F.&A.M., and Oka Community Church.

Surviving are his wife, Mae Conley; four sons, Delmas Conley of Erbacon, Melvin Conley and Gilbert Conley, both of Looneyville, and Paul Conley of Hartville, Ohio; four brothers, Brooks Conley of Newton, Charles Conley of Glen Allen, Va., Eugene Conley of Suffield, Ohio, and Roy Conley of Mogadore, Ohio; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Services were held at John H. Taylor Funeral Home, Spencer, with Rev. Richard Webb officiating. Burial with Masonic graveside rites was in Clover Cemetery.

ARLIE RICHARD ‘Red’ MIDCAP

Arlie Richard “Red” Midcap, 65, of Spencer, died Sunday, Jan. 15, 2006, at his home.

He was the son of the late Phil and Zanna Lane Midcap. He was a welder and long time truck driver. He was a Baptist.

Surviving are his wife, Judy Cooley Midcap; three sons, Arlie Midcap and wife Bobbi of Spencer, Kazit Midcap and wife Elizabeth of Evans and Dallas Midcap and wife Gladys of Rich-wood; three step-sons, Rodney Carbough and wife Debbie of Grantsville, Randy Carbough and wife Alberta of Salisbury, N.C., and Rick Carbough and wife Cindy of Knoxville, Tenn.; two sisters, Lois Snodgrass and Claris Riggs, both of Spencer; five granddaughters; five step-grandsons; two step-granddaughters; numerous nieces and nephews; and two very special friends, Buck and Robin Holstein of Spencer.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Ruth McClanahan and Carole Carafelli, and three brothers, Rev. Darrell Midcap, Stanley Midcap, and an infant, Steve Allen Midcap.

Services were held at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home, Spencer, with burial in Island Run Family Cemetery, near Spencer.

Josephine C. Church, 75, of Walton Hills, Ohio, died Thursday, Dec. 22, 2006.

She was born on Leading Creek, the daughter of the late Alfred and Ollie Ford.

Surviving are her husband, Arles Church; one son, David Church; one daughter, Sharon Patterson; four grandchildren, David Church, Jr., Tammie Crissman and Emily and Michael Patterson; four great-grandchildren, Mickala, Matthew, Megan and Joshua; five brothers, Anes, Ronnie, Billy, Roger and Randall Ford; and four sisters, Mabel Sampson, Elmadine Bevins, Nina Dawson and Judy Gainer.

She was preceded in death by four siblings, Terry, Avery and Dina Ford and Maxine Wilson.

Services were held at Johnson-Romito, A Golden Rule Funeral Home, Bedford, Ohio. Burial was in Crown Hill Memorial Park.

KENNETH RICHARDS

Kenneth E. Richards, 51, of Grantsville, died Thursday, Jan. 19, 2006, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital, Parkersburg.

He was the son of the late Erma W. and Violet R. Gill Richards.

He was a life member of NRA and attended Cherry Fork Methodist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Sheryl Wease Richards; one step-son, Austin Clark of Grantsville; one brother, Charles Richards of Grantsville; and four sisters, Loretta Grimm of Pullman, Charlene Richards and Frances Bush, both of Big Springs, and Phyllis Hoffman of Charleston.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Linda McWilliams.

No services were held.

ERIC SAFFIR

Eric Saffir, 83, of Spencer, died Friday, Jan. 20, 2006, at home.

He was born in Vienna, Austria, the son of the late Federic and Emma Dworac Saffir.

He was a graduate of Liverpool College, Liverpool, England. He was retired from Kellwood Corp.

Surviving are his wife, Frances Jarvis Saffir; two sons, Dr. Michael Saffir of Bethany, Conn., and Richard Saffir of San Francisco, Calif.; two grandchildren; four nephews; and one niece.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Hannah Roth.

Services were held at John H. Taylor Funeral Home, Spencer, with Rev. Michael F. “Mike” King officiating. Burial was in Prudence Chapel Cemetery, Minnora.

REV. CLIFTON SAMS

Rev. Clifton W. Sams, 85, of Big Springs, died Monday, Jan. 23, 2006.

He was born in Parkersburg, the son of the late Lewis O. and Bertha Bailey Sams.

He served in the Pacific Theatre during World War II on the USS Antietem (CV36). He worked for Trans World Airlines and retired from Union Carbide Corp. with 27 years of service. He was pastor of Chestnut Grove Independence Baptist Church for more than 31 years. He served for many years on the Chaplain Board of Minnie Hamilton Health Care Center. He and his wife were foster parents for more than 200 children.

Surviving are two sons, Steve Sams and James Sams, both of Big Springs; three daughters, Susan Rush of Big Springs, Nancy Sams of Kennewick, Wash., and Anita Parsons of Sand Ridge; six grandchildren, Christy Justice, John Sams, Dallas Sams, Joseph Sams, Samantha Cason and Dylan Rush; and three great-grandchildren, Hailey, Easton and Sarah Sams.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Eva Jean Frederick Sams; three brothers, Robert, Lewis and Lloyd Sams; and two sisters, Kathryn Sams and Ruth Marshall.

Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville. Burial was in Mt. Zion Chapel Cemetery, Leading Creek Road, near Big Springs.

THOMAS GREATHOUSE

Thomas J. Greathouse, 61, of Parkersburg, died Thursday, Dec. 29, 2005, at Marietta Memorial Hospital.

He was born in Annamoriah, the son of the late Juanita McFadden.

Surviving are his wife, Debra Greathouse; five sons, Thomas II, Aaron and Anthony Greathouse, Donald McDowell and Craig Newcomb; three daughters, Juanita, Charlene and Cheryln Greathouse; 10 grandchildren; two brothers, Tim and Stanley Lockhart; and three sisters, Joyce Dobbs, Donna Tullos and Beverly Materna.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Steve and Jack Lockhart, and one uncle, Eugene (Blue) Greathouse.

Memorial services were held at Matheny Pomroy Funeral Home, Elizabeth, with Michael Sundstrom officiating.

EVELYN DULEY

Evelyn M. Hall Duley, 86, of Parkersburg, died Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2006, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital.

She was born at Mt. Zion, the daughter of the late McClellan “Clel” Joseph Hall and Allie Whytsel Hall Butler.

She was a member of Rosemar Church of Christ and former employee of O’Ames and American Viscose. She had raised 12 foster children.

Surviving are two sons, Jerry Duley of Fayetteville, N.C., and Charles Duley of Bremerton, Wash.; three step-daughters, Cora Leona Hudson of Charleston, Bonnie Blout of Texas and Janice Collart of Cambridge, Ohio; 14 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; two
brothers, Alanzo Hall of Sheffield, Ohio, and Paul J. Hall of Crystal Springs, Ohio; two sisters, Arlene McDonald, with whom she lived in Parkersburg, and Irene Conger of Vienna; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert “Herb” Duley; two brothers, Otis Hall and
Leroy Hall; and two sisters, Zela Riggs and Relda Hersman.

Services were held at Kimes Funeral Home, Parkersburg, with Evangelist Wirt Cook officiating. Burial was in Evergreen North Cemetery.

VELTA OCIE STARCHER

Velta Ocie Starcher, 91, of Ravenswood, died Saturday, Jan. 28, 2006.

She was born at Altizer, the daughter of the late Ralph and Emma Craddock Sampson.

She was a homemaker.

Surviving are one son, Dale Starcher of Painesville, Ohio; three sisters, Lelah Starcher of Rittman, Ohio, Nina Mae Saunders of Latta, S.C., and Bessie Nutter of Fleming, Ohio; five grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Kessler Starcher; one son, Carl Starcher; one granddaughter, Sheila Laughlin; and five brothers, Ralph, Ernest, Cyrus, Hollie and Frank Sampson.

MARTHA JANE OSBORN

Martha Jane Osborn, 74, of Cox’s Mills, died Friday, Jan. 27, 2006, at Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital, Weston.

She was born in Gilmer County, the daughter of the late Asa and Chloe Ellyson Jones.

She was a member of Leading Creek Baptist Church, where she served as church clerk and trustee for over 30 years.

Surviving are her husband, Kenneth L. Osborn; one daughter, Betty Jones of Sissonville; one son, Gary Radcliff of Sand Fork; two sisters, Ruth McHenry of Glenville and Mary Brandon of Cox’s Mill; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, William Roscoe Radcliff; one sister, Rosa Marguerite Queen; and four brothers, Claude, Paul, Graydon and Jewell Jones.

ARVILLA FLORA MILLICAN

Arvilla Flora Ford Holbert Millican, 85, of Big Springs, died Friday, Jan. 27, 2006.

She was born in Doddridge County, the daughter of the late Terrance and Margaret Tate Ford.

She was a homemaker and member of Blessed Hope Baptist Church, Big Springs.

Surviving are her husband of 23 years, Verlin Millican; five daughters, Linda Shaffer and husband Buck of Elyria, Ohio, Naomi White of Lagrange, Ohio, and Margaret Kirby and husband
Buck, Carol Dye and husband Gary and Sharon Yeager and husband Jim, all of Big Springs; three step-children, Don Millican and wife Holly of Norton, Ohio, Connie Stover and husband Harry of Penisula, Ohio, and Eddie Millican of Big Springs; 24 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews. She was a foster mother to Betty Robinson of Big Springs and Ruby Hopkins (now deceased).

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Dail Holbert, June 12, 1970; three sisters, Nellie, Roanna and Dorothy; four brothers, Alfred, Ransel, Brooks and Audrey; one great-grandson, Alex McKenzie Dawson; and one step-granddaughter, Amy Millican.

Services were held at Blessed Hope Baptist Church, Big Springs, with Rev. Dallas Smith and Rev. Alfred Hickman officiating. Burial was in Fluharty Cemetery, Big Springs.

DAVID GAIL HANLON

David Gail Hanlon, 70, of Harrisville, died Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2006, at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Parkersburg.

He was born in Pennsboro, the son of the late Oris G. and Janet Wilson Hanlon.

He had been a practicing attorney in Harrisville since 1971 and a state senator representing Calhoun, Ritchie, Pleasants, Wirt and Wood counties from 1976-1986.

Surviving are his wife of 30 years, Carole Hanlon; two daughters, Khara Gael Hanlon and Meghan Gael Hanlon, both of Harrisville; and two sisters, Diane Pierce of Harrisburg, Pa., and Kathleen Layne of Davisville.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Suzanne Sandy.

Services were held at Harrisville Baptist Church with Pastor Robert Perine officiating. Burial was in Harrisville IOOF Cemetery.

GUYLA CRUM

Guyla D. Umstead Crum, 80, of Henderson, Nev., died Saturday, Jan. 28, 2006, at Odyssey Health Care, Inc.

She was born in Grantsville, the daughter of the late Ivan and Frances Umstead.

She was a homemaker.

Surviving are one son, William Crum of Henderson; two brothers, Hoyt Umstead of Hot Springs, Ark., and John Umstead of Pahrump, Nev.; one grandson; one granddaughter; and one great-grandson.

She was preceded in death by her husband, M. Paul Crum; one brother, Robert Umstead; and one son, Charles P. Crum.

Services were held at Palm Mortuary, Henderson, with burial in Palm Memorial Park.

EDITH ‘Edie’ BURROWS

Edith L. “Edie” Burrows, 62, of Parkersburg, died Saturday, Jan. 28, 2006, at St. Joseph’s Hospital.
She was born on Norman Ridge, Big Bend, the daughter of the late Loyal and Mona Fortney Yoak.

She attended Norman Ridge E.U.B. Church and was educated in Calhoun County schools. She was a member of River Hill U.M. Church, Parkers-burg, for many years and was baptized by Rev. Clyde Crites, assisted by Don Godfrey. She was a teacher of Beginner’s Sunday School class and helped start the first nursery. She attended Calvary Memorial Church, Parkersburg, for several years. She was a caretaker to many elderly people.

Surviving are her husband, W. Dean Burrows, whom she married Sept. 11, 1960; three children, Vicki C. Duncan of Parkersburg, Tim D. Burrows of Rockport and Deidra R. Dent of Teays Valley; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; five sisters, Eva Collins of Weston, Evelyn McCormick of Grantsville, Edna Schmeller of Akron, Ohio, Pauline Jarvis of North Carolina and Neva Patterson of Parkersburg; two brothers, Tom Yoak of Grantsville and Jim Yoak of Flatwoods; four step-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and special friends, Pat Godfrey, Carolyn Sharps, Betty Dowler and ladies of WSCS at Calvary Memorial Church.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Robert, Dennis and Denzil Yoak; one sister, Sharon Frame; and one nephew, Dustin McCormick.

Services were held at Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, South Parkersburg, with Pastor Rob Collins officiating. Burial was in Sunset Memory Gardens Cemetery, Parkersburg.

CARROLL ‘Buck’ HICKS

Carroll “Buck” Hicks, 64, of Orma, died Sunday, Jan. 8, 2006, at The Arbors, Marietta, Ohio.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Gene and Jarrett Hicks, and two sisters, Gwendolyn Simmons and Mary Hicks Parsons.

Graveside memorial services were held at Clark Jarvis Cemetery, Chloe, with Rev. Roger Carter officiating.

CHLOE ALFRED

Chloe Alfred, 87, of Naples, Fla., formerly of Orma, died Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2006, at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Doris and Bill McElvey.

She was the daughter of the late Thomas and Sallie Parsons Butler of Beech.

Surviving are two sons, Jimmy Alfred of Orrville, Ohio, and Roger Alfred of Lakeville, Ohio; two daughters, Sally Grizzard of Dover, Tenn., and Doris McElvey of Naples; 15 grandchildren; 22 great-granddaughters; one great-great-grand-child; one sister, Flava Fisher of Cottageville; and one brother, Milton Butler of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Alfred; one granddaughter, two great-grandchildren; and eight siblings.

Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg. Burial was in Orma United Methodist Church Cemetery.

NANCY ANN McKINNEY

Nancy Ann McKinney, 65, of Millstone, died Monday, Jan. 30, 2006, at Roane General Hospital.

She was born in Washington, D.C., the daughter of the late Roy and Bonnie Dodson VanWinkle.

She was a licensed real estate broker in West Virginia and was the owner of United Country-Country Homes Realty, Spencer.

Surviving are her husband, Douglass McKinney of Florida; one son, Joseph Hoover of Millstone; two daughters, Donna Scott of Michigan and Debbie Bowen of California; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one son, Jerry R. Hoover, Jr.

Graveside services were held at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Silver Spring, Maryland.

RICHARD ‘Dick’ VANCAMP

Richard “Dick” VanCamp, 70, died Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2006, at his daughter’s home in Bismarck, N.D.

He was born at White Pine, the son of the late Joseph Paris and Lelah Viola Simers VanCamp.

After attending Calhoun County High School, he worked as a merchant marine on the iron ore boats in the Great Lakes for Cleveland Cliffs Co. from 1953-58. He entered the U.S. Army in 1958 where he was stationed in Germany and honorably discharged in 1960. He was employed as an engineer at Northwest Medical Center, Thief River Falls, Minn., from 1961 until retiring in 2000. He served as president of Woodworkers Union and was a member of American Legion and Eagles.

Surviving are two daughters, Norma Wagoner and husband Jeff of Big Springs and Trish Albert and husband Kory of Bismarck; two sons, Rick VanCamp and wife Mendi and John VanCamp and
wife Pam, all of Fargo, N.D.; 10 grandchildren, Jake and Athena Wagoner, Seth and Adam VanCamp, Caitlyn, Corey, Carissa, Cylee and Cailey Albert and Jonah VanCamp; and two brothers, Harlan VanCamp of Harpers Ferry and Ronald VanCamp of Glen Bernie, Md.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia “Pat” Ann Harlin VanCamp, in 2003, and three brothers, Robert, Eugene and Ronnie.

Services were held at Johnson Funeral Service, Thief River Falls, with Rev. Nancy Hanson officiating, and military honors by American Legion, Ecklund-Holmstrom Post #117, and Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post #2793.

WILLIAM ‘Abe’ BARKER

William A. “Abe” Barker, 88, of Parkersburg, died Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2006.

He was born in Smithville, the son of the late Carl and Opal Nutter Barker.

He was a veteran of World War II and served at Normandy. He was a member of VFW 5575, Mineral Wells, and retired from Smith/Cloverdale Packing. He worked as a cattle buyer in Ohio and West Virginia.

Surviving are two sons, Ken Barker of Matthews, N.C., and Michael Barker of Gallipolis Ferry; five grandchildren; one sister, Bobbie Craig of Parkersburg; two brothers, Jim Barker of Tampa, Fla., and Fred Barker of Parkersburg; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Edith E. Bowers Barker, and three sisters, Opal Hardman, Fanny Lou Wilson and Ruth Barker.

He was the son of the late Emerson and Etta Pearl Keener Bailey.

He was a pipeliner.

Surviving are one son, Dale Clark of Chloe; one daughter, Terri Butler of Frametown; five grandchildren, Jeremy Moore of Minnora, Brooke Dawson of Frametown, Felicia Jarvis and Kayla and Cody Clark, all of Chloe; one great-grandson, Ethan Jarvis of Chloe; two brothers, Adderson Bailey of Orrville, Ohio, and Steven Bailey of Granville, Ohio; and three sisters, Velma Conner of Ferndale, Md., Virginia Lowry of Orrville and Ocie Helmick of Nicut.

He was preceded in death by four sisters, Janice, Arlene, Darie and Stella, and one granddaughter, Kendra Clark.

Charles E. “Chuck” Harris, 50, of Grantsville, died Monday, Jan. 30, 2006.

He was born in Grantsville, the son of the late James Lewis and Virginia Ellen Hathaway Harris.

 He was employed by Cabot Oil and Gas for 25 years.

Surviving are his wife of 28 years, Darlene G. Hickman Harris; one son, Brian E. Harris of Grantsville; two daughters, Bridgett D. Harris and Brittany N. Harris, both of Grantsville; one sister, Deborah L. (Debbie) Lamp of Harrisville; and two brothers, Kenneth L. Harris of Grantsville and Jerry Hathaway of Vanese, Calif.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Randall L. (Randy) Harris of Grantsville.

LENNIE BANE METZ

Lennie Bane Metz, 89, of Grantsville, died Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2006, at Minnie Hamilton Health Care Center.

He was the son of the late Dudley Andrew and Arizona Lee Miller Metz.

He was a World War II veteran.

Surviving are six children, Leonard Metz of Five Forks, Robert Metz and wife Linda of Rockport, Sharon Wilson and husband Carl, Karen Reed and husband Alvin, Lennie B. Flora Evelyn McElwee Collins, 96, of Normantown, died Sunday, Feb. 5, 2006.

She was born at Lockney, the daughter of the late Judson and Lozanna Boone McElwee.

She was a member of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church, Stumptown, since Jan. 8, 1933, having served as Sunday School teacher, secretary of Women’s Mission Circle, and VBS worker.

Surviving are one daughter, Twila Moyers of Normantown; and several grandchildren, nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Hayward Bernard Collins, whom she married Nov. 2, 1942; two brothers, Fred McElwee and Wilbur McElwee; and four sisters, Flossie Turner, Olena Norman, Mellie Flenner and Alma McElwee.

Services were held at Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church, with Elder Larry Fisher and Rev. Harry Siers officiating. Burial was in Collins Community Cemetery, Stumptown.

CARRIE BELL STARCHER

Carrie Bell Starcher, 80, of Marion, Ohio, died Saturday, Feb. 4, 2006, at Riverside Methodist Hospital, Columbus, Ohio.

She was born in Hur, the daughter of the late Guy and Martha Adams Miller.

She was a homemaker and a member of Marion Enterprise Baptist Church.

Surviving are one daughter, Kathryn Wilcox of Marion; four sons, Guy Starcher, Jr., David Drew Starcher and Terry Lee Starcher, all of Marion, and Michael Ray Starcher of Chesterville, Ohio; three sisters, Beulah Crawford of Chloe, Velma Board of Barberton, Ohio, and Delma Hall of Canton, Ohio; two brothers, Carl Miller of Davisville and Harold Miller of Marion; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 41 years, Leonard Ray Starcher, on Jan. 16, 1987; one son, Phillip Ray Starcher; one brother; and one sister.

Heather Richards Myer, 26, of Big Bend, died Saturday, Jan. 28, 2006.

She was the daughter of Larry Desmoin Richards and step-daughter of Sue Richards and daughter of Natalie White Valdez and step-daughter of Albert Valdez.

Also surviving are her daughter, Kamaira Myer, and son, Kaden Myer, and their father, James Paul Myer; two sisters, Vicki Poore and Jessica Richards; one half-brother, Jonathan Valdez; one step-sister, Misty Valdez; one step-brother, Glenny Valdez; two nieces; two nephews; and her grandmother, Edna Parsons.

She was preceded in death by grandmother, Dude Richards, and grandfather, Desmoin Richards.

Marie Grace Rogers, 75, of Sand Fork, died Sunday, Feb. 5, 2006, at her residence.

She was born on Lynch Run, Gilmer County, the daughter of the late Opha Lee and Katherine Campbell Keith.

She retired from Waco Oil & Gas with 21 years of service. She was a member of Little Kanawha Independent Church.

Surviving are one daughter, Beverly Morford and husband Jim of Grantsville; four grandchildren, Monica Haley of Oceanside, Calif., Jessica Shuff of Glenville, and Scott and Lucas Morford of Grantsville; five great-grandchildren, Kylie and Trey Shuff and Cole, Gunner and Ty Haley; one sister, Goldie Frashure of Linn; and two brothers, Lawrence Keith of Stouts Mills and Jesse Asa Keith of Sand Ridge.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Katherine Triplett in 2000; a set of infant twin sons, Alfred and Arnold; four sisters, Eula Mae Parker, Helen Greener, Lena Keith and Ruby Keith; and two brothers, Opha Lee Keith, Jr. and Orville Lee Keith.

KATHERYN DALE BURROWS

Katheryn Dale Stump Burrows, 71, of Grantsville, died Monday, Feb. 6, 2006.

She was the daughter of the late Jesse Taylor and Ethel Carrie Kight Stump.

After living in Richfield, Ohio, and retiring from Veterans Administration Hospital, Brecksville, Ohio, she returned to Grantsville with her husband, Coleman Gene Burrows. She was a member of Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church. She was involved with Pleasant Hill CEOS, was a 27-year breast cancer survivor, worked extensively on various fundraisers for cancer awareness and was the 2004 Calhoun County Belle.

Surviving are three daughters, Wanda Gail Warfield of Mogadore, Ohio, Sandra Dale Roznovsky of Stony Point, N.C., and Leah June Cheyney of Brunswick, Ohio; six grandchildren; two sisters, Estrial Kennedy and Barbara Kimble; and four brothers, Robert, Harold, Sammy and Donald Stump.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Albert and Carlos, and one sister, Ila Williams.

Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Rev. Rick Metheney and Rev. John Glesner officiating. Burial was in Pleasant Hill Cemetery.

COLEMAN GENE BURROWS

Coleman Gene Burrows, 72, of Grantsville, died Monday, Feb. 6, 2006.

He was the son of the late James Spencer and Delta A. Starcher Burrows.

He retired from Ford Motor Co., Brookpark, Ohio, in December 1986, and moved back to Grantsville with his wife, Katheryn Dale Burrows. He was a member of Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church and was on the board of directors of Minnie Hamilton Health Care Center for eight years, serving as vice president since 2003 and serving on numerous committees. He was a driver of the Disabled American Veterans van since its inception in 1998 and had logged over 10,000 miles.

Surviving are three daughters, Wanda Gail Warfield of Mogadore, Ohio, Sandra Dale Roznovsky of Stony Point, N.C., and Leah June Cheyney of Brunswick, Ohio; six grandchildren; and one sister, Ernestine Gainer.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Howard Burrows, and one sister, Dena Plant.

Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Rev. Rick Metheney and Rev. John Glesner officiating. Burial was in Pleasant Hill Cemetery.

Erma C. Poling, 101, died Sunday, Feb. 5, 2006, in Apache Junction, Ariz.

She was born in Calhoun County and had been a resident of Barberton, Ohio, for 23 years. She was a member of Sand Ridge Methodist Church.

Surviving are one daughter, Edith Boatright; two sons, Glenn Poling and Waitman Darl Poling; 11 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William C. Poling, and one daughter, Elladene.

Elinor G. Carr, 81, of Pennsboro, died Sunday, Feb. 12, 2006, at Parkersburg.

She was born at Shock, the daughter of the late Nathan and Missouri Bishop Cottrill.

She had been employed in the garment industry for 16 years at the former Cairo Manufacturing Co., and was a member of Rosedale Baptist Church and Pennsboro Senior Citizens.

Surviving are one son, Terry Carr of Ellenboro; one daughter, Mary Hanshaw of Cairo; one brother, Hugh Cottrill of Arnoldsburg; two sisters, Mona Skidmore of Chesapeake and Roseann Turner of Glenville; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harley Carr; three brothers, Ralph, Frank and Burl Cottrill; and one sister, Pina Cottrill.

Mabel O. Newell, 97, of Arnoldsburg, died Sunday, Feb. 12, 2006, at Miletree, Spencer.

She was born in Braxton County, the daughter of the late Benjamin and Ora Stackpole Edgell.

She was a member of Walnut Methodist Church.

Surviving are two daughters, Genevieve Smith and Joyce Arnold; one sister, Nell Mayse; two granddaughters, Shelly Lynch and Tammy Whitnable; four grandsons, Randel Smith, Mark Arnold, Matt Arnold and Jon Arnold; and 12 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Claude Newell, in 1984; one brother, Ernest Edgell; two sisters, Opal Barr and Ola Chenoweth; and one great-granddaughter, Jennifer Arnold.

Robert L. Ford, 50, of Willowick, Ohio, died Thursday, Feb. 9, 2006.

He was born in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of Anes Ford and the late Naomi Ford.

He had lived in Willowick for 13 years. He was a maintenance tech at Acacia on the Green, Lyndhurst, Ohio. He was director of the basketball league at Our Lady of Mount Carmel.

Surviving in addition to his father are his wife of 30 years, Sandra Oliveri Ford; three siblings, Ronny and Richard Ford and Linda Thomas; and many uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins and in-laws.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Alfred and Ollie Ford, and many aunts and uncles.

Verlin P. Riggs, 76, of Little Hocking, Ohio, died Sunday, Feb. 19, 2006, at his home.

He was born in Calhoun County, the son of the late William and Fannie Campbell Riggs.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War and was retired from Nisan Trucking, Creston, Ohio.

Mary Ellen Vannoy Green, 73, of Manassas Park, Va., died Monday, Feb. 13, 2006, at Prince William Hospital.

She was born at Russett, the daughter of the late Golda Stump Vannoy and James J. Vannoy.

Surviving are two sons, Calvin James “CJ” and Jeffrey Allen “Jeff” Green, both of Manassas Park; one brother, Elden Dale Vannoy of Ladysmith; one sister, Irona Yeager of Grantsville; one granddaughter; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard Hubert Green; one daughter, Debbie Wesley; grandparents, Maggie and Fred Stump; one brother, Earl Vannoy; and one niece, Dianne Vannoy.

ZELDA ‘Tag’ SIERS

Zelda “Tag” Siers, 88, of Vienna, died Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2006, at St. Joseph Hospital, Parkersburg.

She was born in Grantsville, the daughter of the late Oscar “Bunt” and Leodie Bennett Hathaway.

 She attended Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, where she taught young adult Sunday School class. She was a charter member of Women’s Society of Christian Service. She was a homemaker and caregiver for her mother and father, active in NYA, worked at several establishments in Grantsville and at Dils Dept. Store, Parkersburg, and was an Avon representative in Calhoun and Wood counties for 49 years. She joined Grantsville Rebekah Lodge on June 12, 1959, serving in all local offices. She received the Decoration of Chivalry Jewel, the highest award given to Rebekahs. She served as past district deputy president for districts 7 and 16, past president of Ladies Auxiliary Patriarchs Militant of Parkersburg and past president of Dept. Association of West Virginia.

Surviving are two daughters, Carolyn Hathaway and Debbie Siers, both of Vienna; one brother, Gale, of Spencer; several nieces and nephews; and her faithful companion, Tiger Baby.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Rector, on Oct. 19, 1973; two brothers, Roma and Lewis “Jake”; and two sisters, Veta Linville and Glena Vannoy.

Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Rev. David Weaver officiating. Burial was in Bethlehem Cemetery. Rebekah Memorial Service was held.

JAMES SAMPSON

James Dale Sampson, 81, of Parkersburg, died Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2006, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital.

He was born in Calhoun County, the son of the late John Edward and Pearl Craddock Sampson.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and retired from Johns-Mansville with 38 years of service. He was a member of Lightner Memorial Church.

Surviving are one daughter, Angelia Matthey of Walker; three grandchildren; one great-grandson; special aunt, Muriel Basnett of Calhoun County; one nephew; and lifelong close friend, Bernadine Ayers Evans of Grantsville.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Geraldine Cunningham Sampson, in 1987; one son, Wayne Sampson, in 1978; and one brother, Randall Sampson.

Robert J. “Pappy” Poling, 69, of St. Marys, died Friday, Mar. 3, 2006, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital.

He was born in Grantsville, the son of the late Laco William and Mable Lucretia Owens Poling.

He was born in Clay County, the son of the late William and Gae Mollohan Rogers.

He retired from Acousti Engineering of Florida in 2002 and returned to Calhoun County.

He was born in Calhoun County. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and was a retired vocational instructor for Florida Dept. of Corrections. He was a member of Sons of the American Legion. He was a Baptist.

Surviving are his wife of 43 years, Joyce C. Hale; one son, Kevin M. Hale of Fruitland Park; two brothers, George Hale of Parkersburg and Thomas Hale of Big Springs; and two sisters, Barbara Reed of Parkersburg and Carolyn DeWeese of Chloe.

Nettie J. White Kerby, 87, formerly of Calhoun County, died Monday, Mar. 6, 2006, in Barberton, Ohio.

She was the daughter of the late Alex and Nancy Hickman Starcher.

Robert L. “Bob” Gibson, 74, of Chloe, died Wednesday, Mar. 8, 2006, in Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston.

He was born at Floe, the son of the late Roma and Reva Knotts Gibson.

He was the retired owner and operator of Town & Country General Store and Town & Country Auto Parts, both of Spencer. He was a retired truck driver and former member of the Teamster’s union. He was a member of Moriah Lodge No. 38, AF&AM, Spencer.

Surviving are his wife, Bernadette Gibson; one son, James “Jay” Gibson of Waltham, Mass.; five daughters, Barbara Thompson and husband Emmett of Canal Fulton, Ohio, Patty Moore and husband Mick of Chloe, Becky Starner and Pete Bowling of Manassas, Va., Karen Frame and husband Kevin of Uniontown, Ohio, and Jean Gorman and husband Gary of Austin, Tex.; two sisters, JoAnn Cadwell of Duck and Janet Tanner of Nebo; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Phillip Ray Watkins, 19, of Chloe, died Tuesday, Mar. 7, 2006, in Waynesburg, Pa., as the result of an accident.

He was the son of William Ray Watkins and Mona Workman Williams.

He attended Little Laurel Baptist Church.

He was born in Braxton County, the son of the late Earl and Maude Meadows Carr.

He was a construction worker, U.S. Army veteran, and member of Simpson United Methodist Church, Belfont.

Surviving are his wife, Betty Moyers Carr; four daughters, Judy Allen of West Milford, Ruby Digman of Pennsboro, Susie Carr of Lagrange, Ohio, and Jo Ann Hunt of Weston; one brother, Smith Carr of Belfont; nine grandsons; 17 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

CHESTER LEE WESTFALL

Chester Lee Westfall, 83, died Monday, Mar. 6, 2006, at home.

He was born in Ripley, the son of the late Flossie Milligan and Hoyt Westfall.

He worked at Union Carbide, South Charleston, and enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1943 and was an instrument flight instructor attaining the rank of lieutenant. In 1953, he and his wife moved to Glenville and started Dalton Store Co. Another store was opened in Grantsville. He retired after 33 years of business. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Gilmer Lodge AF&AM, Scottish Rite Bodies and Nemesis Shrine Temple, Parkersburg, and Gilmer County Farm Bureau. He was a founding member of Glenville Lions Club.

Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Dorothy Dalton Westfall, whom he married Feb. 6, 1948; one son, John C. Westfall, DDS; two daughters, Jane Kennedy of Ripley and JoAnn Powell of St. Marys; nine grandchildren; and two great-granddaughters.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Isabelle Baird.

Services were held at Ellyson Mortuary, Glenville, with Rev. Ronzel Roberts officiating. Burial was in Meadow Lane Cemetery.

BERTHA MAE MAZE

Bertha Mae Maze, 87, of Brohard, died Sunday, Mar. 12, 2006, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital.

She was born in Wirt County, the daughter of the late Henry and Emily Westfall Veon.

She was a member of Hartley Church of Christ, Brohard. She was a homemaker.

Surviving are her husband of 65 years, Virgil R. Maze; one daughter, Betty Lou Dye of Vienna; one son, Richard Maze of Palestine; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Winland of Parkersburg and Hazel Snider of Freed; one brother, Arnold Veon of Torch, Ohio.

She was preceded in death by one grandson, Darrin Maze; one sister, Ruth Freed; and three brothers, James, Paul and Donald Veon.

Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Minister Tom Butterfield officiating. Burial was in Hartley Cemetery, Brohard.

VIOLET MARIE MEADOWS

Violet Marie Slider Meadows, 74, of Mt. Zion, died Monday, Mar. 6, 2006, at her home.

She was born in Calhoun County, the daughter of the late Johnnie Starcher and Lovie Godfrey Starcher Gunn.

She was a homemaker and a member of Cremo Methodist Church.

Surviving are her husband, Oris Meadows of Mt. Zion; two step-sons, Roger and Larry Meadows, both of Norton, Ohio; three step-daughters, Patricia Nida, Peggy Hacker and Maysel Miller, all of Creston; 13 step-grandchildren; eight step-great-grandchildren; one sister, Alma Withrow of Barboursville; one niece; two great-nieces; one great-great-nephew; and one great-great-niece.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Drew Slider.

KAMRYN ELAINE BOAK

Kamryn Elaine Boak, three-month-old daughter of Kevin and Amber Arthur Boak of Annamoriah, died Tuesday, Mar. 14, 2006, at Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown, due to complications following heart surgery.

Surviving in addition to her parents are one brother, Austin Coon at home; grandparents, Rick and Jean Boak of Ohio and Crystal Arthur of Annamoriah; great-grandmothers, Elain Boak of Ohio and Patsy Bowers of Annamoriah; great-great-grandfather, Darrell Villers of Annamoriah; aunt, Bobbie Boak of Ohio; uncles, Keith Boak of Ohio and Brent and Craig Arthur of Annamoriah; and several great-aunts and great-uncles.

She was preceded in death by great-grandfathers, Robert Boak and Manny Bowers, great-grandparents, Franklin and Norma Rohr and Ira and Bessie Arthur; and cousin, Alyssa Marie Boak.

Garnet Sue Bishop, 57, of Chloe, died Saturday, Mar. 4, 2006, at CAMC, Charleston.

She was born in Clay County, the daughter of Cleo Metheney and the late Roy Lee Metheney.

Surviving in addition to her mother are one son, Delmas Lee Moore of Barberton, Ohio; one grandson; five brothers, Don Metheney of Crummies Creek, Darrell Metheney of Reedy and Creston Metheney, Jim Metheney and George Metheney, all of Chloe; and three sisters, Wanita Greathouse of Stinson, Phyllis Anderson of Rush and Carol Arnold of Walker.

ELMER SAMPSON

Elmer Sampson, 92, of Spencer, died Tuesday, Mar. 14, 2006, at Charleston Area Medical Center’s Memorial Division.

He was born in Calhoun County, the son of the late William and Gracie Jackson Sampson.

Surviving are one brother, Robert Sampson of Arnoldsburg, and two sisters, Loraine Stanley of Streetsboro, Ohio, and Stella Tanner of Massillon, Ohio.

He was preceded in death by seven brothers and two sisters.

NORMA EMOLENE ROSE

Norma Emolene Rose, 67, of Rosedale, died Thursday, Mar. 16, 2006.

She was born at Perkins, the daughter of the late Lele and Jennie Dobbins.

She was a member of Crooked Fork Baptist Church.

Nancy Ann Bailey, 66, of Auburn, died Sunday, Mar. 19, 2006, at her home.

She was born in Boone County, the daughter of the late Oscar and Julia Osborne.

She was a member of Mt. Olive Freewill Baptist Church, Lawford.

Surviving are her husband, Charles Ray Bailey; one son, Arthur H. Gibson of Big Bend; two daughters, Patricia A. Osborne and Cathy L. Gibson, both of Auburn; thee step-daughters, Barbara J. Sandra Louise Simmons Spence, 65, of Strongsville, Ohio, died Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2006, at her home.

She was born in Beech Valley, the daughter of the late William and Ina Richards Simmons.

She retired from Lakewood School Systems after more than 20 years of service. She was a member of Trinity Freewill Baptist Church. Cleveland, Ohio.

Surviving are her husband, Enoch “John” Spence, whom she married July 21, 1956; two sons,
Stanley Spence of Ashtabula, Ohio, and Richard Spence of Strongsville; one daughter, Kimberley Brooks of Strongsville; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three sisters, Ruby Myer McHenry of Grantsville, Sara Cool of Worthington and Pearl Heiney of Glenville; and five brothers, Earl Simmons of Cleveland, Bearl Simmons and Cecil Simmons, both of Eastlake, Ohio, Henry Simmons of Mentor, Ohio, and Eugene Simmons of Las Vegas, Nev.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Erma Simmons Kline, and five infant siblings, Nettie, Mettie, Elodene, Earnestine and Orval Simmons.

Services were held at Coreno Funeral Home, Cleveland. Burial was in Brooklyn Heights Cemetery, Cleveland.

PLEASANT WILLIAMS

Pleasant Winfred “P.W.” Williams, 84, of Elkins, former resident of Calhoun County, died Saturday, Mar. 18, 2006, at Talbott’s Personal Care Home, Belington.

He was born in Oneida, Tenn., the son of the late Olive Chambers and Benjamin F. Williams.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a radar technician aboard the escort carrier USS Gilbert Islands in the South Pacific. He worked as an accountant for the Atomic Energy Commission before being transferred to its Washington, D.C., office. He retired from Dept. of Energy in 1979.

Surviving are his wife, Judy Doty Williams; one brother, Benjamin Williams; two daughters, Brenda Carol Cachia and Karen Gail Martin; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; four step-children, Sally Barnett, Emily May, Leslie McCormick and Daryl Pullen; and eight step-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his former wife, Cornelia O’Conner Williams; two sisters, Frankie Allred and Lavadnia Garrett; two brothers, Lansden Carson Garrett and James Marion Williams; and one grandson, Joshua Martin.

In accordance with his wishes, his remains were cremated and his ashes scattered on his mother’s grave in Scott County, Tenn. Memorial celebration was held at the Williams’ home.

DORSEY RICHARDS

Dorsey Sylvester Richards, 86, died Friday, Mar. 17, 2006.

He was born at Big Springs, the son of the late Henry and Mary Collins Richards.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He retired from Park Drop Forge, Cleveland, Ohio.

Surviving are one son, Wayne Richards of Brecksville, Ohio; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Clara “Beth” Richards; one daughter, Marian; five sisters; and two brothers.

CLAUDINE BROWN

Claudine Brown, 87, of Rockport, died Saturday, Mar. 25, 2006, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital.

She was born in Roane County, the daughter of the late Rev. W.S. States and Elizabeth Siers States.

 She worked at Viscose. She was a homemaker and member of Limestone United Methodist Church.

Surviving are her husband of 66 years, Forrest C. Brown, whom she married July 2, 1939; one daughter, Betty Adams of Canal Winchester, Ohio; one son, Charles Brown and wife Brenda of Grantsville; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; several nephews; and one niece.

She was preceded in death by her step-mother, Lyda States; two sisters, Pauline States and Geraldine Anderson; two brothers, Rev. W.G. States and Paul States; and one niece.

Services were held at Limestone U.M. Church, with Pastor Vera Archer officiating. Burial was in Limestone U.M. Church Cemetery.

JANIEVE COTTRELL

Janieve P. Cottrell, 70, of Amboy, Ind., died at Miller’s Merry Manor, Peru, Ind.

She was born in Arnoldsburg, the daughter of the late Earl and Ruby Lowe White.

She was a homemaker and member of North Grove Church.

Surviving are her husband, Guy J. Cottrell, whom she married Oct. 14, 1952, at Millstone; two sons, Earl Robert of Amboy and Jimmy Darrell of Idaville, Ind.; one sister, Doris Reynolds of Grantsville; and two brothers, Charles of Mantua, Ohio, and Nelson of Remington, Ind.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, Wilma, Clara and Judy, and four brothers, Shirley, Paul, Glen and Archie.

Services and burial were held at North Grove Church, Amboy.

LEONA EVELYN RICHARDS

Leona Evelyn McMillin Richards, 66, died Sunday, Mar. 26, 2006, at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Parkersburg.

She was born at Meadsville, Pa., the daughter of the late Glen and Evelyn Dooley McMillin.

She was a retired CNA in Pennsylvania and owned and operated Richards Grocery, Pleasant Hill, for 17 years.

Surviving are her husband of 46 years, Jim Richards of St. Marys, and one son William (Bill) Richards of Sistersville.

Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Rev. Kevin Church and Rev. Carroll McCauley officiating, and burial in Nobe Cemetery.

WAUNETA BELLE KELLER

Wauneta Belle Goff Keller, 83, of Burnt House, died Monday, Mar. 27, 2006, at her home.

She was born in Ritchie County, the daughter of the late Trevy and Loretta Black Goff.

She graduated from Harrisville High School and earned an associates degree from Parkersburg Community College. She worked for Ritchie County Community Action.

Surviving are three sons, Douglas and Thomas, at home, and Alan of Parkersburg; one daughter, Nina Wilson of Parkersburg; five grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; three great-grand-daughters; four sisters, Wanda Keller (her twin), Wilda Billey, Wilma Riddle and Winifred Eddy; and one brother, Leon Goff.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Claude Keller; one son, Ernest Claude Keller II; infant daughter, Linell Doreen Keller; infant granddaughter, Valerie Dawn Wilson; and one grandson, Jason Keller.

As per her wishes, after donating the body for research, her ashes will be interred next to her husband, son and daughter.

Memorial service was held at Burnt House Methodist Church.

LEVERENE ‘Ol’Ma’ HARPER

Leverene “Ol’Ma” Jarvis Harper, 85, of Gandeeville, died Monday, March 27, 2006.

She was born in Calhoun County, the daughter of the late Robert and Delilah Ellison Jarvis.

She was a Christian, self-employed merchant, retired employee of Kellwood Co. and former Red Cross volunteer.

Surviving are two daughters, Enid Harpold and Bobbette Harper; special friend, Mary Taylor; five grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell Harper, and two sons, Robert Milt and Jerry Dean Harper.

WANOKA ‘Tommie’ MOREHEAD

Wanoka “Tommie” Morehead, 79, of Grantsville, died Saturday, Apr. 1, 2006, at her home.

She was born on Leading Creek, the daughter of the late Franklin Pierce and Ocie Blaine Goodnight.

She retired from Eagle Pointe Nursing Facility and was a lifetime member of Ladies Auxiliary.

Surviving are four sons, Steve, Woodrow, Harold and Kevin; five daughters, Kathleen, Brenda, Marlene, Ginger and Debbie; one sister, Blanche Bell; 20 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil “Bill” Morehead, and one daughter, Phyllis

Ruby Pauline Mathers, 79, died Thursday, Feb. 9, 2006.

She was born in Ritchie County, the daughter of the late Walter Gray Richards and Ada Mae Tingler Richards.

She retired as a department manager from Hecht Co. in 1990.

Surviving are one brother; two sisters; one son; and three grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Forest Earl Mathers; one son; one daughter; seven
brothers; and one sister.

Graveside services were held at Beech Valley Cemetery, with Rev. Carroll McCauley officiating.

MICHEAL PAUL WHIPKEY

Micheal Paul Whipkey II, 17, of Arnoldsburg, died Sunday, Apr. 9, 2006, from injuries received in an ATV accident on Road Run, near Arnoldsburg.

He was born in Spencer, the son of Micheal Paul and Nancy Jean Poorman Whipkey.

He was an 11th grade student at Calhoun Middle/High School. He enjoyed auto mechanics and camping.

Surviving, in addition to his parents, are one brother, Jeremy Poling, and one sister, Stacy Poling, both of Arnoldsburg; paternal grandmother, Hester Curry of Mt. Zion; maternal grandparents, Richard and Ruth Poorman of Sand Ridge; and several aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Ralph Whipkey, Sr.

Services were held in Arnoldsburg Community Building, with Pastor Alfred Hickman officiating. Burial was in Kight Cemetery, White Pine Road.

CLAY ARNOLD

Clay Arnold, 94, of Chloe, died Tuesday, Apr. 4, 2006, at Clarksburg Veterans Administration Medical Center.

He was born at Nicut, the son of the late Clenton and Martha Keaton Arnold.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a retired farmer.

Surviving are four step-sons, Hershel Yost of Chloe and Jerry, Hubert and Bernard Yost, all of Ohio.

Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg. Burial was in Lamb Cemetery, Chloe.

ANNA RUBY SIERS

Anna Ruby Edgell Siers, 84, of Chloe, died Friday, Apr. 7, 2006, at Minnie Hamilton Health Care Center.

She was born in Calhoun County, the daughter of the late Ferrell and Cora Sampson Metz.

Surviving are her husband of 56 years, Ray Lee Siers; one son, Ernest Paul Edgell; two daughters, Janet Lee Siers and Janice Sue Forney; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

LESLIE CUNNINGHAM

Leslie K. Cunningham, 57, of Ravenna, Ohio, died Monday, Apr. 3, 2006, in Ravenna, Ohio.

He was born at Hallburg, the son of Letha Mollohan Cunningham and the late John Holly Cunningham.

He served three years in the U.S. Army and was retired from Waltco Hydraulics, Tallmadge, Ohio.

 He was a member of Ravenna Assembly of God Church.

Surviving in addition to his mother are his wife of 17 years, Jewell King Cunningham; three children, Jonathan and Deanna Cunningham at home and Cindy Dickey of Quaker City, Ohio; three grandchildren; and three brothers, Jerry Cunningham of Hartville, Ohio, Roger Cunningham of Akron, Ohio, and Larry Cun-ningham of Hallburg.

He was preceded in death by infant twin sons and two brothers, Jack and Darius Cunningham.

ROSE ANN PEARSON

Rose Ann Pearson, 56, of Myrtle Beach, S.C., died Saturday, Apr. 1, 2006, at Medical University of South Carolina, Charleston, S.C.

She was born at Clay, the daughter of the late Henry Dencil and Anita Bell Mullins Legg.

She was a day care director and former member of Grasslick Baptist Church, Kenna. She attended Willow Dale Baptist Church, along with several churches in West Virginia, including First Baptist Church, Grantsville. She was serving as children’s minister at Timberlake Baptist Church, Myrtle Beach.

Surviving are her husband, James Pearson; one son, James Mark Pearson of Myrtle Beach; one daughter, Beth Rossana of Myrtle Beach; four grandchildren; and special niece, Linda Han-shaw of Clay.

Graveside services were held at Goshen Cemetery, Kentuck, with Pastor Ron Stoner officiating. Luncheon reception and celebration of her life followed at Grasslick Baptist Church.

LILLIAN CUNNINGHAM

Lillian Cunningham, 86, of Mahone, died Thursday, Apr. 6, 2006, at her residence.

She was born in Smithville, the daughter of the late Jacob D. and Amzie Rogers Cunningham.

She graduated from Harrisville High School in 1938. She worked as Dr. Prather’s office assistant for 20 years, H&R Block, and Ritchie County Sheriff’s Dept. as a deputy for 21 years. She was a member of Harrisville Women’s Club, Smithville CEOS, Daughters of American Pioneers, Smith-ville Senior Citizens, and Smithville Community Association. She was a member of Smithville Baptist Church, Smithville Baptist Women and American Baptist Women.

Surviving are one sister, Velma Loraine Batton of Lakeville, Minn.; three nieces and nephews; and 10 great-nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Jennings D. Cunningham; one nephew, John Thomas Batton; and one great-niece, Amber Batton.

Services were held at Raiguel Funeral Home, Harrisville, with Rev. Charles Mullen officiating. Burial was in King Knob Cemetery.

WILLIAM ‘Bill’ STUMP

William B. “Bill” Stump, 83, of Kearny, Ariz., died Thursday, Jan. 5, 2006, in Mesa, Ariz.

He was born and educated in Grantsville. He served in the Armored Infantry and the U.S. Air Force in World War II. His Kennecott career began in 1947 as a warehouse clerk at the mine’s plant. He held various clerical and accounting posts until 1959 when he was promoted to supervisor of general accounting at Kennecott’s Arizona operation. He became assistant division comptroller in 1969 and later transferred to Salt Lake City, Utah Copper Division, where he served as administrative accountant and comptroller. He retired in 1986. He retired again in 1989 from Phelps Dodge Corp. as director of tax research and analysis. He was a member of National Association of Accountants, American Legion and Knights of Pythias.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Dee Stump, whom he married in 1983; three daughters, Beverly Gyenizse, Joni Akbarian and Teresa M. Pacheco; one son, William L. Stump; one step-daughter, Roberta Guzman; one step-son, Arthur M. Bracamonte; 12 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Boneta, and two sisters, Eleanore Brannon of Arnoldsburg and Louise Ferrell of Akron, Ohio.

Memorial services were held at Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Kearny.

ERMA LUCILLE KLINE

Erma Lucille Kline, 85, of Las Vegas, Nev., died Thursday, Nov. 17, 2005.

She was born in Gilmer County, the daughter of the late Willie and Ina Richards Simmons and oldest of 15 children.

She worked for 14 years at Westinghouse plant, Fairmont, before moving to California after getting married on July 28, 1955. She and her husband retired in Yuma, Ariz. She lived in Nevada the last 15 years.

Surviving were four sisters, Ruby Myer McHenry of Grantsville, Sara Cool of Worthington,
Pearl Heiney of Glenville and Sandra Spence of Strongsville, Ohio (since deceased); five brothers, Earl Simmons of Cleveland, Ohio, Bearl Simmons and Cecil Simmons, both of Eastlake, Ohio, Henry Simmons of Lakeland, Ohio, and Eugene Simmons of Las Vegas; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Kline, on Nov. 18, 1990; sister, Sandra Louise Spence; and five infant siblings, Nettie, Mettie, Elodene, Earnestine and Orval Simmons.

In accordance with her wishes, her remains were cremated. Graveside services were held Jan. 30. Her urn was placed with her husband in Arlington National Cemetery.

VONDA GAIL GODFREY

Vonda Gail Mahaney Godfrey, 83, of Chester, died Wednesday, Mar. 22, 2006, in Chester.

She was born in Calhoun County, the daughter of the late William and Ella Sturm Mahaney.

She was a former cook at Calhoun County High School, Rainbow Restaurant and John’s Restaurant, all of Grantsville.

Surviving are four sisters, Beulah Norton and Maxine Chambers, both of New Cumberland, Barbara Zajac of Steubenville, Ohio, and Mary Lou Mahaney of Toronto, Ohio; and one brother, Max Mahaney of Eastland, Tex.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Godfrey, and several brothers and sisters.

Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Rev. Carroll McCauley officiating. Burial was in Bethlehem Cemetery, near Grantsville.

CHARLES CUNNINGHAM

Charles E. Cunningham, 73, died Monday, Mar. 27, 2006, in White Oak, Tex.

He was born at Lockney, the son of the late Roy Cunningham and Lucy Cook Cunningham.

He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving from Dec. 1952 until Dec. 1954. He retired from Harris Industry after 50 years and owned and operated D&D Handyman Service. He was a member of North Main Church of Christ, White Oak.

Surviving are his wife of 51 years, Macel Evadene McCartney Cunningham; three sons, Ronald Edmund Cunningham, Christopher Cunningham and Ronald Allen Cunningham, all of White Oak; two daughters, Freda Roxann Dragula of Florida and Carla Parvin of Ft. RUTH WRIGHT

Ruth L. Wright, 87, of Marietta, Ohio, died Sunday, Apr. 9, 2006, at Marietta.

She was born in Westminster, British Columbia, the daughter of the late James M. and Jessie Manson Miller.

She had been a licensed practical nurse for 20 years with her last employment at Calhoun General Hospital. She was a member of Twin Rivers Baptist Church, near Marietta.

Surviving are two sons, Richard “Dick” Wright of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, and Daniel Wright of Buffalo, N.Y.; one daughter, Margaret Lamp of Marietta; one brother, George Miller of Stratford, Ontario; two sisters, Olive Bayly of Eugene, Ore., and Betty Miller of Victoria, British Columbia; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Rev. James W. Wright; three brothers, Henry, Alec and Donald Miller; and two sisters, Margaret Miller and Catherine Harrison.

Services were held at McCullough-Rogers Funeral Home, Pennsboro, with Pastor James Rushing officiating. Burial was in Masonic Cemetery, Ellenboro.

HARLEN HOGUE

Harlen B. Hogue, 97, of Glenville, died Monday, Apr. 10, 2006, in Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital, Weston.

He was born in Ritchie County, the son of the late Willie B. and Independence Broadwater Hogue.

He was a graduate of Pennsboro High School and WVU, with an agricultural degree. He was retired from the W.Va. Extension Service as an agent in Gilmer and Calhoun counties. He was an 80+ year member of Farm Bureau and a member of W.Va. Agriculture Hall of Fame. He was a member of Glenville Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are three daughters, Dorothy Rhoades of Glenville, Helen McClain of Ripley and Patricia Shaver of Buckhannon; one son, Donald Hogue of Pennsboro; 11 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and three sisters, Hester Ferrell of Middlebourne, Hilda Sweeney of Mannington and Hortense Butler of Marietta.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Louise Pratt Hogue; two sisters, Hazel Barnes and Helen Willard; and one grandchild.

Services were held at Ellyson Mortuary, Glenville, with Rev. David Krum officiating. Burial was in Meadow Lane Cemetery, Glenville.

RONZAL ADAM WHITE

Ronzal Adam White, 90, of Wilsie, Braxton County, died Monday, Apr. 10, 2006, at Louis A. Johnson V.A. Medical Center, Clarksburg.

He was the son of the late Homer and Rosa B. Six White.

He was a retired steel worker and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II for which he received a Purple Heart. He was a Christian.

Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Gladys Carte White; two sons, Charles White of Exchange and Dana White of Frametown; three daughters, Edna Zwoll of Orma, Janet Glessner of Adrian and Marie Collins of New London, Ohio; two brothers, Roscoe White of Parkersburg and Dorvin White of Rockport; one sister, Naomi Gilbert of Elizabeth; 16 grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one son, William “Ronnie” White; two grandchildren; five brothers; and five sisters.

Services were held at Richard M. Roach Funeral Home, Gassaway, with Rev. Dewey Tanner officiating. Burial was in White Family Cemetery, Sleith, with military graveside rites conducted by American Legion Post #33.

GENEVA CLAYPOOL

Geneva M. Claypool, 79, of Elizabeth, died Tuesday, Apr. 11, 2006, at Willows Center, Parkersburg.

She was born in Schultz, the daughter of the late Charles H. and Bessie M. Brooks Morrell.

She was a 1946 graduate of Normantown High School. She was a homemaker and member of Good Hope Baptist Church.

Surviving are two daughters, Sara L. Parsons of Elizabeth and Edith L. Bennett of Slaty Fork; one step-daughter, Elsie Givens of Colorado; one step-son, Raymond Claypool of Mt. Clare; two sisters, Louise McCullough of Indiana, Pa., and Lorene “Aunt Pat” Tomlinson of Slaty Fork; three brothers, her twin, Charles Morrell of Beech Bottom, William Morrell of Calhoun County and Glen Morrell of Cape Canaveral, Fla.; five grandchildren; several step-grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandson.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Everett Claypool, in 1981; one sister, Leone Sarver; one great-grandson; and one step-son, Edward Claypool.

JOSEPH ‘Joe’ STARCHER

Joseph Thaddius “Joe” Starcher, 48, of Toledo, Ohio, died Sunday, Mar. 19, 2006.

He was born in Toledo, the son of Harley Starcher and the late Rose Starcher of Rowels Run.

He worked as a boilermaker in Toledo for 28 years.

Surviving in addition to his father are his wife, Kim; children, Dawn, “Angela” Maria Garcia, Rachael, Joey, Jeremy, Jennifer, Christopher and Brittany; several grandchildren; four sisters, Liz Starcher, Teresa Sullivan, Elaine Starcher Ribby and Rosemary Samson; and former wife, Julie Hymore.

Services were held at Freck Funeral Chapel, Wynn, Ohio. Burial was in Restlawn Memorial Park.

ROBERT STARCHER

Robert A. Starcher, 31, of Uniontown, Ohio, died Sunday, Nov. 27, 2005.

He was the son of Arnold and Frances Starcher, formerly of Cremo.

He graduated from Cuyahoga Falls High School and was employed by Baker Vehicle Systems, Macedonia, Ohio.

Surviving in addition to his parents are his wife, Danyel; two daughters, Melanie and Caitlyn; two brothers, Richard Starcher and David Starcher; two nieces; two nephews; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Joanne Starcher.

EVELYN WILLAJEAN ‘Jean’ BENNETT

Evelyn Willajean “Jean” Bennett, 81, of Grantsville, died Saturday, Apr. 15, 2006, at United Hospital Center, Clarksburg.

She was born on Horse Run Road, Lewis County, the daughter of the late Roy and Plessie Wyant.

 She was a 1942 graduate of Weston High School and was a member of First Baptist Church, Grantsville, and Order of Eastern Star.

Surviving are her husband, Ray Bennett, whom she married Feb. 23, 1944; one son, Dennis Bennett of Craigsville; one daughter, Rebecca Wilson of Knoxville, Md.; two grandchildren; and three great-grandsons.

She was preceded in death by five brothers, Burl, Homer, Truman, Earl and Roy Wyant, Jr., and one sister, Mary Margaret Wyant.

Services were held at Ellyson Mortuary, Inc., Glenville, with Rev. Doug Eades officiating. Burial was in Broad Run Cemetery, Jane Lew.

Adam James Lockhart died at birth on Sunday, Apr. 16, 2006, at Parkersburg.

Surviving are his parents, Steven W. and Theresa D. Leeson Lockhart of Vienna; paternal grandparents, Loretta and Gerald Ball of Davisville; paternal great-grandmother, Ruth Morrison of Parkersburg; maternal grandparents, Jim and Jean Leeson of Vienna; maternal great-grandparents, Francis and Geneva Reed of Pennsboro; one sister, Kaitlynn Lockhart at home; uncles and aunts, Robert and Jonda Lockhart of Cattlettsburg, Ky., and Jeff and Cindy Leeson of Killbuck, Ohio; and five cousins.

He was preceded in death by one brother and twin to Kaitlynn, Andrew Robert Lockhart, who died at birth on Sept. 3, 1998; paternal blood grandfather, Robert Lockhart, who died in the Vietnam War; and paternal great-grandfather, Howard Morrison.

Goldie Mae McCartney Campbell, 98, died Sunday, Apr. 16, 2006, at Berger Hospital, Circleville, Ohio.

She was born in Calhoun County, the daughter of the late C.J. and Lotie Whipkey McCartney.

She had attended Evangelical Methodist Church, Little Hocking, Ohio, and Church of Christ in Christian Union, Grove City, Ohio. She was a homemaker.

Surviving are two daughters, Lotie Mattox, with whom she resided in Orient, Ohio, and Aniebell C. Dawson of Waverly, Ohio; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Ruby Grogan and Freda Keeper, both of Washington; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence O. Campbell, in 1995; one infant daughter, Eula Mae Campbell; two grandchildren; three brothers, Judson “Jud” McCartney, Clarence “Jake” McCartney and Carl McCartney; and four sisters, Mary Dunlap, Monie Queen, Monia Cook and Mildred Battin.

REV. HARRY SIERS

Rev. Harry F. Siers, 68, of Stumptown, died Thursday, Apr. 20, 2006, at his home.

He was born in Calhoun County, the son of the late Harley and Thelma Godfrey Siers.

He was a U.S. Army veteran and member of the former 230 Military Police Unit, Grantsville. He was a retired market cattle identification coordinator for the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture with 39 years of service. He was pastor of Enon Baptist Church, president of Baptist Men’s Fellowship and member of Little Kanawha Baptist executive board. He was president of Minnie Hamilton Health Care Center’s Chaplain’s Association and member of Eureka Lodge #40, AF&AM, Grants-ville, Nemesis Shrine Temple, Parkersburg, and Order of Eastern Star. He was active in Relay for Life, World Day of Prayer and Teen Fest youth events. He was a former member of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church, Stumptown, where he served as trustee and Sunday School teacher. He had received numerous awards from W.Va. Dept. of Agriculture and Veterinary Services.

Surviving are his wife, Terry L. Siers; one son, Kevin Siers of Parkersburg; four sisters, Lois Jean Sears and Carolyn Sue Collins, both of Stumptown, and Betty Jo Miller and Patricia Vannoy, both of Mineral Wells; two grandchildren; 21 nieces and nephews; and nine great-nieces and great-nephews.

Larry Arthur, 58, of Elizabeth, died Saturday, Apr. 22, 2006, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital.

He was born in Creston, the son of the late John and Gaye Boice Arthur.

He was an operator and producer in the oil field industry.

Surviving are his wife of 37 years, Sharon Riggs Arthur; one son, Scott Arthur of Elizabeth; two daughters, Jennifer Campbell and Kelly Edwards, both of Palestine; one sister, Diane Deem of Lubeck; four grandchildren; and one step-grandson.

He was born in Rush Run, the son of the late Claude and Leota Gherke.

He retired from Cabot and was a member and deacon of Lower Steer Run Baptist Church.

Brice McKown, 68, of Spencer, died Saturday, Apr. 29, 2006, at home.

He was born at Beech, the son of the late Lee and Vada Hall McKown.

He was a retired inspector for W.Va. Dept. of Highways and a former employee of Monarch Rubber Co. and former co-owner of Pat’s Eldercare, both of Spencer. He had represented Combined Insurance and was a foster parent.

He was born in Braxton County, the son of Betty L. Bourne of Nicut and the late Paul Bourne.

He was employed by Whitney Well Service as a pipeline construction worker.

He owned and operated Personal Touch Cleaning Service for two years and was retired from O’Ames Co. with 33 years of service.

Geraldine (Jerry) Ball, 92, of Grantsville, died Thursday, Apr. 27, 2006, at Ohio Valley Health Care, Parkersburg.

She was the daughter of the late Everette and Mae Miller.

She was a member of Knotts United Methodist Church, Grantsville, and former member of Humphreys U.M. Church, Sissonville. She was a member of WSCS women’s group for years and served as a representative to the annual conference at Buckhannon and participated in Spiritual Life Retreat, Jackson’s Mill.

Surviving are two sons, Dallas Ray (Dick) Ball of Cairo and Robert Lee (Bob) Ball of Sissonville; three grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Manard Ball; one son, Joseph Ball; one sister, Betty Gainer; and one brother, Gibb Miller.

BASIL ‘Rex’ McCARTNEY

Basil “Rex” McCartney, 77, of Grantsville, died Saturday, Apr. 29, 2006.

He was born in Fairview, the youngest son of the late Otis D. and Rebecca Goff McCartney.

He was retired from the Town of Grantsville, where he served as chief of police for 32 years. He was a member of Eureka Lodge No. 40, a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason, and Grantsville Chapter 73, Order of Eastern Star. He attended First Baptist Church, Grantsville.

Surviving are four daughters, Janice Metheney and Jill McCartney, both of Statesville, N.C., and Joyce Underwood and husband Dave and Jennifer Albright and husband Chad, all of Grantsville; eight grandchildren, James Hall, Chris Metheney, Chad and Ryan Underwood, Daniel and David Whitlow, Jeffery Skidmore and Katie Albright; one brother, Rood McCartney; and two sisters, Eda Sparks and Freda Bellomy.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Virginia “Faustine” Duskey McCartney; eight brothers; and one sister.

Beverly Ruth Ann Jarvis, 63, of Washington, died Sunday, Apr. 30, 2006, at her residence.

She was born in Calhoun County, the daughter of Ferrell and Thelma Starcher Griffin of Parkersburg.

She had worked at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital as a nurse and had retired from Mid-Ohio Home Health Care. She was a member of South Side Baptist Church, Parkersburg.

Surviving in addition to her parents are her husband of 43 years, Ira Leroy Jarvis; one son, Aaron Jarvis of Williamstown; and two brothers, Joe Griffin of Little Hocking, Ohio, and Eric Griffin of Caldwell, Ohio.

DORA ‘Peg’ BUCHANAN

Dora M. “Peg” Buchanan, 85, of Parkersburg, died Wednesday, May 3, 2006, at Eagle Pointe Nursing Facility.

She was born at Walker, the daughter of the late Clyde E. and Nancy O. Bibbee Clegg.

She had been a member of Church of Christ since childhood and was a long-time member of Camden Avenue congregation.

Surviving are two sons, James E. Buchanan of Reynoldsburg, Ohio, and Gary W. Buchanan of Creston; two daughters, Peggy E. Morris and Nancy G. He was born at Elizabeth, the son of Melbadene Richards Sims of Cox’s Mill and the late Maxwell Wilson.

She was the daughter of the late Layman and Mary Kathryn Smith Godfrey.

She was born in Left Hand, the daughter of the late Robert Levi and Freda Potts Myers.

KENNETH RAY BOGGS

Kenneth Ray Boggs, 20, of Mineral Wells, died Saturday, May 13, 2006, of injuries sustained in an ATV accident on Radcliff Road, Mineral Wells.

He was the son of Bernard “Ray” Boggs and the late Hilda Boggs.

He attended church at Big Tygart United Methodist Church and was employed at Frames Etc., Parkersburg. He was a 2004 graduate of Parkersburg South High School.

Surviving in addition to his father are his grandmothers, Maggie Stump of Glenville and Frankie Mowrey of Creston; several uncles, aunts and cousins; special friend, Caity Starcher; and Josh and Jerimiah, whom he grew up with.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Hedge Stump of Glenville and Leonard and Alma Boggs, both of Grantsville.

ILA GREY SNIDER

Ila Grey Snider, 82, of Grantsville, died Friday, May 19, 2006, in Marietta, Ohio.

She was born in Calhoun County, the daughter of the late William Arnold and Mary Ethel Yoak Snider.

She graduated from Calhoun County High School in 1942 and Mountain State Business College. She retired from the Dept. of Human Services in 1986 after 26 years of service where she served as financial clerk for Calhoun and Gilmer counties. In 2002, she completed 50 years of service as a secretary to Calhoun County Farm Bureau. She was the leading force in founding the Calhoun County High School Alumni Association in 1988, serving as its president since that time.

Surviving are one daughter, Terry Harris and husband Larry of Grantsville, and two granddaughters, Alissa Brooke Harris of Seneca Falls, N.Y., and Casey Grey Harris of Grantsville.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Dale Snider of Arizona, and one infant sister, Leola Mae.

LELIA FAY ROSE

Lelia Hathaway Fay Rose, 85, of Covington, Ky., died Wednesday, May 17, 2006, at St. Elizabeth’s South Hospital, Covington.

She was born in Grantsville, the eldest daughter of Oral C. Hathaway and Grace Miller Hathaway.

 She graduated from Calhoun County High School, received a BA degree from Marshall College in physical education and a Masters degree from West Virginia University in social work. After graduating from Marshall, she joined the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corp.

Surviving are two daughters, Patricia Diane Fay of Covington, with whom she lived, and Kathleen Reynolds of Middletown, Ohio; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and six sisters.

She was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.

JERALD ‘Jerry’ HARLEY RICHARDS

Jerald “Jerry” Harley Richards, 68, of Glasgow, Ky., died Wednesday, May 17, 2006, at T.J. Samson Community Hospital.

He was born in Calhoun County, the son of the late James Leamon and Clara M. Richards.

He was a retired gear lab technician from Eaton and a member of the Masons.

REV. RICHARD PAUL HAYHURST

Rev. Richard Paul Hayhurst, 70, of Gauley Bridge, formerly  of Grantsville, died Sunday, May 21, 2006.

He was born in Calhoun County, the son of the late Paul and Delta Godfrey Hayhurst.

He attended Calhoun County High School. He was a minister and evangelist. For the past several years, he had resided at New River Lodge, Gauley Bridge, where he worked as a desk clerk.

Surviving are one sister, Jo Ann Nicholas of Good Hope, and one nephew, Jason Bryan Nicholas, of the Netherlands.

He was preceded in death by one infant brother, Hoyt Neal Hayhurst.

Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Rev. Charles Blankenship officiating. Burial was in Pleasant Hill Cemetery.

PEARL REED

Pearl Reed, 88, of Grantsville, died Sunday, May 21, 2006, at Minnie Hamilton Health Care Center.

She was the daughter of the late Okey and Annie Cunningham Shimer.

Surviving are two sons, Timothy L. Reed of Cutler, Ohio, and David L. Reed of Grantsville; two daughters, Euna Reed and Phyllis J. Whipkey, both of Grantsville; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and four sisters, Goldie Richards, Blanche Kendall, Pauline Cline and Arthelia Richards.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Loyd Reed, on Aug. 24, 1995; one grandson, David Reed; and three sisters, Clareth Wilson, Ollie Ford and Virginia Williams.

Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Rev. Carroll McCauley officiating. Burial was in Bethlehem Cemetery, near Grantsville.

Gabriel Butcher, 69, of Big Springs, died Sunday, May 21, 2006, at home.

He was born in Boone County, the son of the late Alex and Susie Gatto Butcher.

Surviving is his friend and caretaker, Lena Hardman, of Big Springs.

OPAL STARCHER STOUT

Opal Starcher Stout, 80, of Cottageville, died Tuesday, May 30, 2006, in St. Joseph’s Hospital, Parkersburg.

She was born at Richardson, the daughter of the late Sylvester S. and Mae Langford Starcher.

She was a graduate of Glenville State College and a retired teacher, who taught elementary schools in Roane and Putnam counties, Washington County, Ohio, and Heritage Christian Academy, Ravenswood. She attended Grace Gospel Church, Pettyville.

Surviving are one brother, Rex Starcher of Spencer; one sister, Joretta Foster of Vienna; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by four brothers, Willard, Alvin, Bernard and O.L. “Bill” Starcher, and three sisters, Earliss Starcher, Goldie Young and Ruth Simmons.

Services were held at John H. Taylor Funeral Home, Spencer, with Pastor Kenneth Leedy and Pastor Mike Allen officiating. Burial was in Starcher Cemetery, Arnoldsburg.

ETHEL MAY DIX

Ethel May Dix, 67, of Orma, died Thursday, June 1, 2006, at her home.

She was born in Glenville, the daughter of the late Oliver and Dorothy Neil.

She was a homemaker.

Surviving are three sons, Ralph Dix of Grafton, Lawrence Dix of Spencer and Glen Dix of Orma; one daughter, Pam Hayes of Orma; three sisters, Mabel Edwards of Goshen, Ind., Virginia Neil of Ohio and Goldie Neil of Buckhannon; and several grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Dix.

Graveside services were held at Orma United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Pearly Thelma Moore, 83, of Nebo, died Wednesday, May 31, 2006, at her home.

She was born in Clay County, the daughter of the late Lee and Carrie Miller Moore.

She was a former employee of American Can Co.

Surviving are five half-brothers, Moses Moore of West Salem, Ohio, Jerry Moore of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, and Kenny Moore, Mike Moore and Roger Moore, all of Rittman, Ohio; and four half-sisters, Hazel Ruth Reich of Wadsworth, Ohio, Donna Jean Bylsma of Bath, Ohio, Geneva Rousch of Tallmadge, Ohio, and Maxine Dye of Ava, Mo.

Graveside services were held at Coen Cemetery, Nebo, with Rev. Darius Arnold officiating.

PAULINE MOORE GUNN

Pauline Moore Gunn, 82, of Grantsville, died Friday, June 2, 2006, at Morgantown.

She was born in Gilmer County, the daughter of the late Thomas and Eva Parsons Moore.

She was a member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church and a former owner of Moore’s Esso Station, Mt. Zion. She was a caregiver for many members of her community.

Surviving are two daughters, Loretta Smith of Reedy and Patsy Arnold of Spencer; one son, Lonnie Gunn of Huntington; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville. Burial was in Mt. Zion Cemetery.

TONY MORRIS

Tony Morris, 65, of Chloe, died Wednesday, May 31, 2006, at the home of his sister.

He was born at Chloe, the son of the late P.M. and Alice Richardson Morris.

He was a shop foreman at B&C Machine Shop, Barberton, Ohio, and worked in pipeline construction. He was a member of Steelworkers and Laborers Union Local #1353.

Surviving are five children, Ron Morris of Chloe, David Morris and Pam Morris, both of Barberton, Scott Morris of Grantsville and Tina Kanouse of New York; seven grandchildren; one sister, Barbara Mace of Chloe; one brother, John Morris of Chloe; and two special friends, Ralph Flinn and Gordon Parsons.

He was preceded in death by one grandchild; two brothers; and one sister.

Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg, with Rev. Dewey Tanner officiating. Burial was in Coen Cemetery, Nebo.

SUSAN LEE FREEMAN

Susan Lee Freeman, 55, of Virginia Beach, Va., died Sunday, June 4, 2006.

She was born in Cleveland, Ohio, and retired from Virginia Beach Public Schools as a bus driver. Before moving to Virginia, she resided in Chloe and, as Susan Starr, was a reporter for the Calhoun Chronicle for several years.

Surviving are her husband, James L. Freeman; two daughters, Michelle Maack and Wanda Bovender, both of Virginia Beach; two sons, Bryan Maack of Chloe and Shane Maack; and six grandchildren.

Services were private at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Great Neck Chapel.

BESSIE ‘Tootsie’ NORMAN

Bessie L. “Tootsie” Norman, 81, of Parkersburg, died Sunday, June 4, 2006, in the Willows of Parkersburg.

She was born in Gilmer County, the daughter of the late Frank and Olga L. Kennedy Norman.

She was a former employee of Rubber Fabricators and was a childcare giver to many. She was a member of Lower Steer Run Baptist Church, Normantown.

Surviving are two step-children, Michael Norman of Parkersburg and Carolyn Emrich of Belpre; two sisters, Mary Wilmoth and Frances Chadwell, both of Normantown; five step-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 14 years, Edison Norman, in 1986; one step-son, Gary Norman; two sisters, JoAnn Huff and Margaret Ruth Turner; and two brothers, Jack and Ewing James.

Services were held at Lower Steer Run Baptist Church, with Elder Mark Minney officiating.

JACKIE LEE BEALL

Jackie Lee Beall, 68, died Monday, June 5, 2006, at home.

He was born on Steer Run, Gilmer County, the son of Louise Whitesel Beall and the late Doyl Beall.

He was baptized at Oak Grove Baptist Church, Normantown, in 1966 and retired from W.Va. Dept. of Highways with 26 years of service.

Surviving in addition to his mother are his wife, Sandra Hevener, whom he married in 1959; three children, Kimberly Beall Lowther, Richard Beall and Charles Beall; six grandchildren; one step-grandson; two sisters, Zeta Jean Mohr and Evonne Mohr; and three brothers, Wendel Beall, David Beall and Doyl Junior Beall.

Services were held at Oak Grove Baptist Church, with Elder Larry Fisher and Elder Richard Adams officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove Cemetery.

BARBARA KEIRNS

Barbara J. Starcher Keirns, 68, died Wednesday, May 17, 2006.

She was born in Akron, Ohio, the daughter of the late Otis and Ethel Underwood.

She retired from Edwin Shaw Hospital with over 20 years of service.

Surviving are her second husband, Dale Keirns; one son, Roy Starcher; four daughters, Kathy Taylor, Robin Larrick, Sandy Monk and Teresa Starcher; four step-children, Karen Connell, Dale Keirns, Jr., Kimberly LaMay, and Randy Keirns; 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; four step-great-grand-children; and two sisters, Gloria and Joyce.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Roy Starcher of Calhoun County, in 1994; three brothers; and two sisters.

Services were held at Hopkins Lawver Funeral Home, Akron, with Rev. Jeff Gindlesberger officiating. Burial was in Hillside Memorial Park.

TRACY FREED

Tracy A. Freed, 88, of Cairo, died Tuesday, June 6, 2006, at Harrisville.

He was born at Freed, the son of the late Claude and Nellie B. Mathess Freed.

He was retired from the former Union Carbide plant, Marietta, after 30 years of service as a furnace operator. He retired again after 16 years opening graves for families in the Cairo area. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was awarded the Combat Infantryman’s Badge and EAME Theater Ribbon with three bronze stars.

Surviving are one son, Tracy D. Freed of Cairo; one daughter, Cleona P. Hoover of Harrisville; one brother, Ivan Freed of Morgantown; two sisters, Delphia Poole of Minoola, Ill., and Dorothy Williamson of Elkins; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Nora P. Eddy Freed, in 1994; one son, Delmer Leon Freed; two brothers, Shirley and Tony Freed; and one grandson, Randy Freed.

SAMUEL TUCKER

Samuel M. Tucker, 76, of Mineral Wells, formerly of Grantsville, died Monday, June 5, 2006, at the Arbors, Marietta.

He was born in Lewis County, the son of the late Samuel M. and Jane Virginia Hayhurst Tucker.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War and a former employee of Verizon.

Surviving are one brother, Robert Tucker of Mineral Wells, and two sisters, Freda Canterna of Freeport, Pa., and Glenna Louise Schoolcraft of Ellenboro, N.C.

She was born in Calhoun County.

Opal Parsons Richards Boatright, 85, of Belpre, Ohio, died Friday, June 9, 2006, at St. Joseph’s Hospital.

She was born at Millstone, the daughter of the late Okey and Mamie Groves Parsons.

She graduated from Calhoun County High School in 1940 and lived in Ohio since 1943. She was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church, Cutler, Ohio.

Surviving are two daughters, Beverley Wilber of High Springs, Fla., and Patricia Richards of Belpre; one son, Christopher Richards of DeFuniak Springs, Fla.; one granddaughter; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Cleo E. Richards, in 1983; her second husband, R.H. Boatright, in 2005; three brothers; and two sisters.

Services were held at Tatman Funeral Home, Belpre, with Pastor Lou Whitney officiating. Burial was in Centenary Cemetery.

AUDRA SHIELDS

Audra M. Shields, 82, of Spencer, died Tuesday, June 13, 2006, at Walton Inn, Walton.

She was born at Spencer, the daughter of the late John James and Bertha Loutichia Black Batten.

 She was a homemaker.

Surviving are five sons, Gary Bruce Miller of Pahrump, Nev., Stephen Quentin Miller of Mt. Zion, Dannie Lee Miller of Orlando, Fla., John Michael Miller of Sanford, Fla., and Randy Scott Miller of Puyallup, Wash.; one sister, Edna R. Starcher of Spencer; 17 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Early D. Miller, and one daughter, Sharon Lynn Miller Burgess.

He was born in Grantsville, the son of the late Charles Junior and Shirley Lee Jarvis Harris.

IDA SIERS

Ida Siers, 88, of Bramblewood Village, died Friday, June 16, 2006, at her home.

She was born in Calhoun County, the daughter of the late Sherman and Elizabeth Norman McCune.

 She was a homemaker and member of Ebenezer Baptist Church, Orma.

Surviving are her twin sister, Lida Bailey of Orma; two daughters, Margaret Morris and Sue Falls; four sons, Arno Creed Siers, Jr., Carl Siers, David Siers and Larry Siers; 28 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Sherman Sampson and Denzil Butler.

LESLIE CLAY SEARS

Leslie Clay Sears, 79, of Norton, Ohio, died Thursday, June 15, 2006.

He was born in Nicut, the son of the late Clay and Seretha King Sears.

He retired from East Ohio Gas in 1987 with 30 years of service.

Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Kathleen Houchin Sears; five children, Donna Stine, David Sears, Sherry Bechter, Lowell Sears and Darlene Lawson; eight grandchildren; three great-grand-children; three sisters, Mary Eakins, Olena Pyle and Delores Church; and two brothers, Dorsey Sears and Delbert Sears.

He was preceded in death by one grandson, Brian Sears, and one brother, Darius Sears.

WILLIAM ‘Bill’ MORRISON

William Bailey “Bill” Morrison, 86, of Grantsville, died Sunday, June 18, 2006.

He was born in Sutton, the son of the late Alpheus L. and Annie Morrison.

Shortly after graduating from West Virginia Wesleyan College with a degree in chemistry, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and served as ordinance officer in the South Pacific and was honorably discharged in 1946 with the rank of captain. He enrolled in what is now University of the Sciences, Philadelphia, and obtained a degree in pharmacy. He and his wife moved to Grantsville in 1950, where he worked as a pharmacist at J&B Drug Store for over 50 years. He served on several boards, including Little Kanawha Resource Conservation and Development Committee as chairman, Calhoun General Hospital and March of Dimes. He was a member of Eureka Masonic Lodge No. 40, Scottish Rite, Shriner, and State Pharmaceutical Association.

Surviving are one daughter, Susan Pitts and husband Donald of Grantsville; one son, William G. (Bill) Morrison of Cross Lanes; five grandchildren, Erin Pitts of Birmingham, Ala., Ryann Pitts Guest and Katie Pitts, both of Charlotte, N.C., Sarah Morrison Hacker of Glenville and William Patrick Morrison of Fairmont; and one brother, Robert J. Morrison of Sutton.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Laura Adelle Ford Morrison, and several siblings.

Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Rev. Mike Worf, Rev. Carroll McCauley and Rev. Chuck McDonald officiating. Burial was in Morrison United Methodist Church Cemetery, Sutton.

Mary Drake, 74, of Chloe, died Sunday, June 18, 2006, at her home.

She was born in Calhoun County, the daughter of the late Josh and Eliza Miller Tanner.

She  attended Mud Fork Union Church, Chloe.

Surviving are one daughter, Connie Metheney of Chloe; one son, James Mikel Tanner of Chloe; one sister, Clara Tanner of Chloe; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn Drake, and one son, Ronald Gene.

Ruby Wright, 92, of Ravenswood, formerly of Cremo, died Sunday, June 18, 2006, at Ravenswood Village.

She was born in Calhoun County, the daughter of the late John and Pearl Greathouse Wright.

Surviving are one son, Clyde Wright of Parkersburg; one sister, Madeline Miller of Mineral Wells; and one grandson.

She was preceded in death by four brothers and six sisters.

HERBERT DALE JOHNSON

Herbert Dale Johnson, 84, of Berea, Ohio, died Sunday, June 18, 2006, at home.

He was born at Grantsville, the son of the late Karl and Lula Hayhurst Johnson.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

Surviving are his wife, Bessie Allen Johnson; five children, Arnette Creager, David Mahaney, Perry Mahaney, Teresa Barkley and Dale Cummins; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one brother, William Jacob Johnson, and one sister, Genevieve

RICHARD ‘Dick’ MOELLENDICK

Richard L. “Dick” Moellendick, 76, of Vienna, died Thursday, June 22, 2006, at his residence.

He was born in Parkersburg, the son of the late Odas L. and Edna L. Jarrett Moellendick.

He was an Air Force veteran, worked for Coca-Cola Bottling Co. for over 30 years and retired from Superior Toyota, Parkersburg. He was a Catholic and was named All American Boy while attending Neale Junior High School.

Surviving are two sons, Richard L. Moellendick, Jr., and wife Jo of Mt. Zion and Todd N. Moellendick of Vienna; three daughters, Kim Monroe and husband Chris and Karla Haislop and
husband Ed, all of Parkersburg, and Kristy B. Nohe of North Hills; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley J. Moellendick, and one infant son, Gregory Moellendick.

Services were held at Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, Vienna. Burial was in Sunset Memory Gardens.

JANE EVELYN RHODES

Jane Evelyn Starcher Rhodes, 88, of Parkersburg, died Wednesday, June 21, 2006, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital.

She was born in Calhoun County, the daughter of the late Charles and Annie Mace Starcher.

She attended Wood County schools and helped teach children in a one-room school. She retired from St. Joseph’s Hospital and was a member of the Women of the Moose, Parkersburg Chapter.

Surviving are one son, William David Rhodes of Parkersburg; six daughters, Yvonne Hoyt of Grafton, Ohio, Betty Gorby of Aurora, Ohio, and Phyliss Gainer, Becky Coss Caplinger, Nancy Dean and Angela Willison, with whom she made her home, all of Parkersburg; one special nephew, Martin Junior Tress of Elyria, Ohio; 30 grandchildren, three of whom she raised; 56 great-grandchildren; and 23 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William David Rhodes; three brothers, Amos, Admiral and Dallas Starcher; one sister, Dessel Starcher Tress; one son, Charles David Rhodes; three daughters, Gladys Cappadonna, Ruth Ann Christopher and Charlene Rhodes; and six grandchildren.

Memorial service was held at Homeland Community Church, Parkersburg, with Rev. Brady Stephens officiating. Burial was in Parkersburg Memorial Gardens.

BLAKE HAL DOUGLAS

Blake Hal Douglas, 80, of Parkersburg, died Wednesday, June 21, 2006, at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Parkersburg.

He was born in Calhoun County, the son of the late Sheridan and Nancy Bailey Douglas.

He was a graduate of Parkersburg High School, U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and retired from Navy Reserves after 20 years of service. He was retired from B&O Railroad after 41 years of service. He was a member of Parkersburg IOOF, Elks Lodge and American Legion Post 15. He had been a volunteer at St. Jospeh’s Hospital for 16 years and was a member of Christian Life Center Church.

Surviving are his wife of 36 years, Georgianna Sutton Douglas; three sons, Bruce Douglas of Parkersburg, Keith Douglas of Atlanta, Ga., and Lon Melonas of Connecticut; two daughters, Cynthia Hoover of Atlanta and Pamela Parslow of South Carolina; 14 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Blaine Douglas of Barberton, Ohio.

He was preceded in death by one son, Rev. Michael Douglas; two sisters, Pearl McPeek and Grace Douglas; and two brothers, Lawrence Douglas and Brooks Douglas.

Services were held at Christian Life Center Church with Pastor Delton Smith and Pastor Robert Richardson officiating. Entombment was in Sunset Memory Gardens Mausoleum with full military rites by American Legion Post 15.

VISTA BURROUGHS GAINER

Vista Burroughs Gainer, 87, of Grantsville, died Saturday, June 24, 2006, at Sunbridge of Glenville.

She was born in Calhoun County, the daughter of the late Fred and Minty Stump Burroughs.

She was a former employee of Rubber Crafters, Inc., and was a member of Rush Run Baptist Church, near Stumptown.

Surviving are her husband, Frank; two sons, Jack Gainer of Harrisville and James Gainer of Williamstown; one sister, Mildred Bates of Arizona; five grandchildren; and three great-grand-children.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Thurl Burroughs and Elton Burroughs.

Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Rev. John Vannoy officiating.

Burial was in Collins Community Cemetery, Stumptown.

RAYMOND JOHN STARKEY

Raymond John Starkey, 71, of Grantsville, died Wednesday, June 28, 2006, at his home on Pine Creek.

He was born in Roane County, the son of the late Lee Roy and Avis Alta Nichols Starkey.

Surviving are his wife of 45 years, Alta Merle George Starkey; four sons, William George and wife Sabrina of Parkersburg, John Starkey and wife April of Lakeland, Fla., Patrick Starkey and wife Dawn and James Starkey, all of Grantsville; four daughters, Tammy Little and husband Stanley of Arnoldsburg, Pam Cutlip and husband Jerry of Parkersburg, Rebecca Snider and husband John of Grantsville and Lisa Banfield and husband Arnold of Williamstown; 13 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Brenda Sue Starkey, and one sister, Evelyn Godfrey.

Memorial service was held at Victory Baptist Church, Grantsville, with Rev. Mike Worf officiating.

Brandy Michelle West, 29, of Leachtown, died Saturday, July 1, 2006, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital as a result of an ATV accident.

She was born in Parkersburg, the daughter of Randy and Debbie Davis Tanner of Leachtown.

She was a 1994 graduate of Scott High School.

Surviving are her husband, Tracy West, formerly of Grantsville; one step-son, Zachary West of Grantsville; one brother, Michael Tanner; one sister, Bridgett Tanner; and paternal grand-mother, Betty Tanner.

She was preceded in death by her paternal grandfather, Robert Tanner, and maternal grandparents, Chester E. and Mary V. Davis.

Services were held at Leavitt Funeral Home, Parkersburg, with Rev. Charlene Spaur officiating. Burial was in Kanawha Baptist Cemetery.

VERNON GLEN GRIBBLE

Vernon Glen Gribble, 73, of Grantsville, died Monday, July 3, 2006, at his home.

He was born at Freed, the son of the late Howard and Ina Freed Gribble.

He served in the U.S. Army, 1953-1955, and re-ceived National Defense Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal.

Surviving are his wife of 36 years, Hazel Richards Gribble; two daughters, Debbie Bush and Kathy Howell; three sons, Steve Gribble, Pete Freed and Tom Freed; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by five brothers, Erschel Freed and Hayward, Bernard, Cline and Murray Gribble; and four sisters, Janice Sutten, Mable Maxson, Clarice Bush and Freda Gribble.

Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Pastor Bobby Wagoner officiating. Burial was in Freed Cemetery, Leading Creek Road.

TROY METHENEY

Troy C. Metheney, 71, of Amburgy, Ky., formerly of Chloe, died Monday, July 3, 2006, at Hazard Area Medical Center, Hazard, Ky.

He was born in Calhoun County, the son of the late William and Sarah Jarvis Metheney.

He was a press operator.

Surviving are his wife, Madeline Metheney; one son, Dwain Metheney of Kentucky; one daughter, Susan Cogar of Kentucky; one sister, Halcie Shaffer of Chloe; two brothers, Donnie Metheney of Seville, Ohio, and Dewey Metheney of Creston, Ohio; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg. Burial was in Metheney Cemetery, Nebo.

WILMA REBECCA ROACH

Wilma Rebecca Howell Roach, 92, of Pleasant Hill, died Tuesday, July 11, 2006, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital.

She was born in Preston County, the daughter of the late David Alison and Louisa Jane Martin Harned.

She was a member of Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church and was a homemaker.

Surviving are two sons, Drexal Howell of Morgantown and David Howell of Vienna; 15 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Harry Howell, in 1979; her second husband, Ray Roach, in 1989; and one son, Melvin R. Howell.

Services were held at Browning Funeral Home, Kingwood.

NORA NICHOLAS

Nora B. Nicholas, 66, of Lockney, died Wednesday, July 12, 2006, in Minnie Hamilton Health Care Center.

She was born in Lockney, the daughter of the late Charles O. and Dorothy May Hopkins.

She was a private caretaker to elderly people in Calhoun and Gilmer counties. She had previously worked at SunBridge of Glenville.

Surviving are two daughters, Donna Brady of Caldwell and Pam Meadows of Lockney; two sons,
Kenneth Schoolcraft of Glenville and Christopher Carafelli of Lockney; one step-sister, Shirley Barnhart of Massillon, Ohio; two step-brothers, Robert and Kenneth Brown, both of Massillon; five grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; one great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Ninia Wornica and Hazel McCumbers.

Services were held at Rush Run Baptist Church with John Vannoy officiating. Burial was in Turner Cemetery, Lockney.

BRUCE McCUNE

Bruce McCune, 89, of Orma, died Thursday, July 13, 2006.

He was born in Calhoun County, the son of the late Peter M. and Willa Bourne McCune.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and served in the South Pacific. He was a former oil field worker and carpenter. He and his brother, Norville, were the subject of a feature article in “Wild Wonderful West Virginia” magazine.

Surviving are one brother, Norville McCune of Orma, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Dowe, Vance and Ralph McCune, and one sister, Stacy Allen.

Graveside rites were held at Orma United Methodist Church Cemetery.

THELMA STEMPLE BELL

Thelma Stemple Bell, 91, of Spencer, died Wednesday, July 12, 2006, at Roane General Hospital.

She was born in Calhoun County, the daughter of the late Ray and Mittie Barnes Stemple.

She was retired from Traders Bank, Spencer, and was a member of St. John’s United Methodist Church, Spencer.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil M. Bell, in 1960, and one brother, Andrew Stemple.

Graveside services were held at Eventide Cemetery, Spencer, with Rev. Leon Strickland officiating.

LAURA GERALDINE KELLEY

Laura Geraldine Kelley, 87, of Grantsville, died Friday, July 14, 2006, at Minnie Hamilton Health Care Center’s long term care.

She was born at White Pine, the daughter of the late Francis and Della Grimm Kelley.

She worked in Akron, Ohio, during World War II, and was a beautician for many years in Grantsville. She was a member of Cherry Fork Church.

Surviving are one sister, Frances Jean Yoak Miller of Grantsville; one brother, Donald Kelley of Grantsville; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, Carolina Barr, Gladys Whipkey and Genevieve Ward, and two brothers, Virgil Kelley and Blenden Kelley.

Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Rev. Alfred Hickman officiating. Burial was in Pleasant Hill Cemetery.

LETA BOATRIGHT

Leta Boatright, 92, of Russett, died Thursday, July 13, 2006, at Minnie Hamilton Health Care Center.

She was born in Calhoun County, the daughter of the late Ferris and Hallie Stump.

She was a homemaker.

Surviving are three sons, Roland Boatright and Ronzel Boatright, both of Grantsville, and Ronald Boatright of Big Springs; three daughters, Allie Boggs and Marie Morrell, both of Grantsville, and Velma Parsons of Normantown; two sisters, Ella Elliott of Millstone and Arlena Hicks of Arnoldsburg; one brother, Leon Stump of Beaver Falls, Pa.; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray (Bud) Boatright; one daughter, Almeda Starcher; four sisters; and five brothers.

IVY VIRGINIA McCUMBERS

Ivy Virginia McCumbers, 67, of Rosedale, died Friday, July 14, 2006.

She was the daughter of the late Okie and Nancy McCune Hall.

Surviving are her husband of 50 years, Donnie McCumbers; three daughters, Priscilla Brady, Brenda Lemon and Rachel Perrin; four sons, Donnie McCumbers, Jr., Daniel McCumbers, Dallas McCumbers and David McCumbers; 23 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Eloise White and Jean Yost; one brother, Chester Hall; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one brother and four sisters.

JESSIE SINGLETON MAXWELL

Jessie Singleton Maxwell, 95, died Thursday, July 13, 2006, at Shenandoah Nursing Home, Fishersville, Va.

She was born in Gem, Braxton County, the daughter of the late French and Effie Bosley Singleton.

She worked for American Rayon Viscoe Co., Parkersburg, for several years.

Surviving are one son, Robert C. “Bob” Maxwell of Hightown, Va.; one daughter, Ella Jane Sheppard of Hacienda Heights, Calif.; four grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; and six
great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy “Buck” Maxwell, in 1977; three brothers, Linn, Virgil and Edgar Singleton; and three sisters, Carrie Bragg, Mary Sponaugle and Rose Lemon.

Carl J. Wix, 74, of Akron, Ohio, died Friday, July 14, 2006, at Hospice Care Center, Akron.

He was born at Creston, the son of the late Harold and Hazel Nutter Wix.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War.

Surviving are one son, Larry Wix of Akron; one sister, Charlotte Riggs; and one granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Peggy.

JAMES JOSHUA SCOTT

James Joshua Scott, 68, of Five Forks, died Sunday, July 16, 2006, at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Parkersburg.

He was born at Sand Fork, Upshur County, the son of the late Rev. Paul and Pearl Dye Scott.

He was an oil field worker and well tender and a member of Beech Valley United Methodist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Loretta Welch Scott; two sons, James Paul Scott of Glenville and Jason Scott of Parkersburg; two daughters, Beverly Dawson of Big Springs and Marie Frymier of Grantsville; two foster daughters, Marie Jones and Sue Dawson; one sister, Naomi Hinzman of Linn; 17 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Caleb Scott; one sister, Lenora Collins; two half-sisters, Sylvia Phillips and Helen Gribble; and three half-brothers, Paul, Harold and Blair Scott.

ETHEL MARIE DUNCAN

Ethel Marie Duncan, 90, of Elkins, died Friday, July 21, 2006, in Nella’s Nursing Home, Elkins.

She was born in Clay County, the daughter of the late D.R. and Ocie Buckbee Elswick.

She was a homemaker.

Surviving are two daughters, Lena M. Moneypenny of Rock Hill, S.C., and Luie Griffith of Spencer; three sons, Ottie Duncan of Arnoldsburg, Charles Duncan of Spencer and George Duncan of Gandeeville; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Andy O. Duncan; one daughter, Cora Ann Duncan; and one son, Andy O. Duncan, Jr.

CHARLES ROWEN FITZWATER

Charles Rowen Fitzwater, 78, of Anderson, Ohio, died Sunday, July 9, 2006, at St. John’s Medical Center.

He was born in Clay County, the son of the late Ruby Lamb Finley and Otmer Fitzwater.

He was employed at Brockway Glass for 10 years and Hobart Welding of Troy, Ohio, for 25 years before retiring in 1993. He was a member of White Oaks Baptist Church. He was a corporal in the U.S. Army, serving in the Korean War.

Surviving are one son, Larry Fitzwater of Piqua, Ohio; one daughter, Carol Montanez of Piqua; two sisters, Vada Sharpe of Anderson and Joann Chapman of Daleville; one brother,
Johnie Fitzwater of Texas; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; aunts and uncles, Maysel and Verne Snyder of Scottsdale, Ariz., Losie Dye of Cleveland, Ohio (formerly of Chloe), and James and Madge Lamb of St. Albans; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his step-father, John Finley; one sister, Hazel Finley; one infant brother, Elden Fitzwater; and one infant sister, Janice Fitzwater.

Services were held at Rozelle-Johnson Funeral Service, with Rev. Evan Lash officiating. Burial was in Brookside Cemetery, Lapel, with graveside military rites.

JEFFREY ARLAN STEWART

Jeffrey Arlan Stewart, 52, of Lockney, died Thursday, July 20, 2006, while vacationing in Florida.

He was the son of the late Herbert Arlan Stewart and Mary Collins Stewart.

For the past six years, he was employed by Braxton County Board of Education as a bus driver. He also did taxidermy work.

Surviving are his wife, Deborah Meadows Stewart, whom he married Sept. 11, 1974; three sons, Christopher Stewart of Lockney and Scott and Keith Stewart, both at home; one daughter, Mary Beth Sauer of Shock; one grandson; and three step-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother, James Howard Stewart.

Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Elder Mark Minney officiating, and burial in Collins Community Cemetery, Stumptown.

WILLIAM STEMPLE

William E. Stemple, 66, of Coolville, Ohio, died Tuesday, July 25, 2006, at his residence.

He was born in Grantsville, the son of the late Leo and Rose Maffet Stemple.

Surviving are his wife, Charlotte Ribbeck Stemple; two daughters, Robin Stemple and Rhonda Vales; one grandson; three brothers, Kenton Stemple of Medina, Ohio, John Stemple of Barlow, Ohio, and Don Stemple of Marietta; and one sister, Carol Gaugham of Marietta.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Bob Stemple.

JEAN FOUGHT-FOWLER

Jean Gainer Fought-Fowler, 82, of Vienna, died Tuesday, July 25, 2006, at St. Joseph’s Hospital.

She was born in Calhoun County, the daughter of the late Alvin Dye and Sadie Kight Gainer.

She was retired from West Virginia Dept. of Human Services, Wood County, and was a member of Newark Baptist Church, where she was a member of the church choir for 27 years.

Surviving are her husband, Ira Dalph Fowler; three children, Jackie Farkas of Milford, N.H., and Donald Keith Fought and Michael Wayne Fought, both of Newark; two step-children, Dianna Lauer of Rockport and Ken Fowler of Vienna; two sisters, Thelma Smith of Marietta and Pauline Newell of California; one brother, Alvin D. Gainer of Michigan; four grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; four step-great-grand-children; and one great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Donald A. Fought; three sisters; and three brothers.

Donnie Forrest Wilson Waldeck, died Monday, July 24, 2006, on her 90th birthday, in Aiken, S.C.

She was born in Calhoun County, the daughter of the late Bessie and George Spence Wilson.

She was active in Broadway Baptist Church, Parkersburg, where she served on the deacon board and was active in Ladies Aid Society and social committee.

Surviving are one brother, Rolley J. Wilson of Parkersburg; three sisters, Bessie Ledsome of Reedy, Mary Starkey of Parkersburg and Osa Fowler of Grantsville; two daughters, Judith W. Hammond and Mary Ann Troy, both of Aiken; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

RUSSELL SCHOOLCRAFT

Russell Schoolcraft, 87, of Rosedale, died Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2006, at Sunbridge of Glenville.

He was the son of the late Ervin and Iva Reeder Schoolcraft.

Surviving are seven nephews, Paul, Bobby and Gary Schoolcraft, John, Joe and Clyde Lykens and Dennis Muller; one niece, Donna Craddock; and special friend and caretaker, Fred Miller.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, Paul, Frank S., Jack and Tom Schoolcraft, and three sisters, Mable Norman, Edith Halston and Shirley Schoolcraft.

William B. “Bill” Gregory, Sr., 68, of Bristol, Tenn., died Sunday, July 30, 2006, at his home.

He was born in Franklin, N.C., the son of Iva Lee Roper Jennings and the late Dewey Gregory.

He was a U.S. Army veteran and was retired from Raytheon Corp. He was a member of King Masonic Lodge No. 461 AF&AM, Bristol Council No. 126 Cryptic Masons, Commandery No. 19 Knights of Templar, Valley of Knoxville Scottish Rite of Freemasonry 32nd degree, Anderson Chapter No. 141 Royal Arch Masons, East Tennessee York Rite Association and Noble No. 2088 Regular Jericho Shriner

Surviving in addition to his mother are his wife, Judy Gregory; one son, Bill Gregory, Jr., and wife Bettina; one brother, Curtis Gregory and wife Shirley; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Jimmy, and one sister, Gracie.

Services were held at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Joe Dowlingsoka and Rev. Clarence Lewis officiating. Burial was in Glenwood Cemetery with military honors conducted by Bristol VFW Honor Guard.

MARGARET JANE CUNNINGHAM

Margaret Jane Cunningham, 82, died Wednesday, July 26, 2006, at the home of her daughter at Five Forks.

She was born in Grand Rapids, Mich.

Surviving are three daughters, Jane Lawaty of Five Forks, Nancy Howard of Ooltewah, Tenn., and Karen Hillebert of Buchanan, Mich.; five grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Cunningham.

JESSIE FRANCES MINNICH

Jessie Frances Bush Minnich, 80, died Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2006.

She was the daughter of the late Francis Albert “Gov” and Oleta Ester Floyd Bush.

She graduated from Weston High School and attended business college in Clarksburg. She worked at Weston State Hospital and W.Va. Employment office. She and her husband opened Minnich Florist, Glenville, in 1950, and later opened a store in Grantsville. She had been active in Gilmer County Fire Dept. Auxiliary, Glenville PTO, Glenville Women’s Club and Gilmer Business Organization.

Surviving are four daughters, Edna Walton of Bridgeport, Linda of Charleston, Ann of Tucson, Ariz., and Marilyn Dennison of Glenville; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; special friends, Betty White, Kelvin Sprouse and Betty Smith; and caregivers, Bobbi Templeton and Billie Jo Ferguson.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jacob Aubrey Minnich, whom she married Aug. 30, 1947; one infant daughter; four brothers, Napoleon, Floyd, Albert and Frank; and two sisters, Bonnie and Monnie.

Services were held at Ellyson Mortuary, Glenville. Burial was in Stalnaker Cemetery.

GARRY MATHENEY

Garry A. Matheney, 53, of Spencer, died Thursday, Aug. 3, 2006, in Whitesburg, Ky., as a result of injuries received in a work-related accident.

He was born in Parkersburg, the son of Bernice Ruth Hall Matheney of Newton and the late James Willard Matheney.

He was the owner of Garry A. Matheney Construction Co., and was a farmer and trader. He was a member of Linden Lodge No. 83, AF&AM, Linden, and Local No. 37, IUOE, Cumberland, Md.

Surviving in addition to his mother are his wife, Kathy J. Matheney; one daughter, Stacy Engle of Spencer; one son, Scott Matheney of Spencer; and two brothers, Terry Matheney and David Matheney, both of Newton.

He was preceded in death by an infant sister, Mary Lou Matheney.

Services were held at John H. Taylor Funeral Home, Spencer, with Rev. Michael F. “Mike” King and Rev. Rick Matheney officiating and Del. Robert “Bob” Ashley speaking. Burial, with Masonic graveside rites, was in Bailey Cemetery, Beech.

CHARLES ‘ROGER’ KENDALL

Charles “Roger” Kendall, 60, of Elyria, Ohio, died Monday, Aug. 7, 2006, at Northridge Health Center, North Ridgeville, Ohio.

He was born in Stumptown, the son of Charles R. and Beverla H. Bennett Kendall of Stumptown.

He was a 1965 graduate of Calhoun County High School and worked in the shipping department of General Plug, Grafton, Ohio, for 26 years. He had played country music with Country Class and Countrymen, and bluegrass and gospel with Kendall Family, Harmony Bluegrass, Harris Family and Backporch Boys.

Surviving in addition to his parents are his friend and care-giver, Kate Modock; one son, Charles R. Kendall, Jr., and wife Crystal of Grantsville; one sister, Conna L. Harris and husband Alva of Mineral Wells; one brother, Rev. Kenneth E. Kendall and wife Beverly of Clarksburg; and three grandchildren.

BILLY ‘Biff’ BARKER II

Billy E. “Biff” Barker II, 44, of Grantsville, died Monday, Aug. 14, 2006, at Minnie Hamilton Health Care Center.

He was the son of the late Billy E. and Marva Lucille “Ruby” Welch Barker.

He was a Christian and attended Knotts Memorial United Methodist Church and Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church. He was a member of Grantsville Volunteer Fire Dept., W.Va. Trappers and Engineers Association, and Moose Lodge #1118.

Surviving are several uncles, aunts and friends.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Elijah Barker and Hazel Wyant Barker, and maternal grandparents, William Clarence and Nellie Whipkey Welch.

Memorial service was held at Pleasant Hill U.M. Church, with Rev. Kevin Church and Rev. Carroll McCauley officiating. Burial was in Ayers Cemetery, Smithville.

ALICE CONLEY

Alice J. Conley, 44, of Mineral Wells, died Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2006, at Ohio State University Medical Center, Columbus, Ohio.

She was born in Braxton County, the daughter of William and Yvorra Shaver of Gassaway.

She was a homemaker.

Surviving are her husband of 25 years, Stephen D. Conley; one daughter, Miranda Siwicki and husband Matt of Grantsville; one son, Justin Conley of Mineral Wells; grandmother, Virginia Shaver of Exchange; one grandson; two sisters, Ernestine Post of Gassaway and Cheryl Morris of Burnsville; and two brothers, William Shaver, Jr., of Burnsville and Dennis Shaver of Exchange.

She was preceded in death by one infant son, Jeremy Stephen Conley.

LOUISE KERBY ESTEP

Louise Kerby Estep, 87, of Grantsville, died Saturday, Aug. 12, 2006.

She was born in Roane County, the daughter of Dewey and Martha (Mattie) Kerby.

She was a 1935 graduate of Calhoun County High School and attended Mountain State Business College. She worked 12 years at Stone & Thomas, Charleston. She was a life-long member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church and charter member of Women’s Society of Christian Service, holding local and district offices. She was a Methodist Youth Fellowship leader and Sunday School teacher.

Surviving are two daughters, Janet L. Davis of Grantsville and Betty Kirby of Charleston; four grandsons, Bob Bailey, Rodney Davis, Kris Kirby and Greg Kirby; and two great-grandsons.

Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Rev. Rick Swearengin officiating. Burial was in Mt. Zion Cemetery.

DELLA BENNETT

Della P. Bennett, 92, of Lower Run, near Normantown, died Monday, Aug. 14, 2006, at The Arbors, Marietta, Ohio.

She was born at Index, the daughter of the late Walter and Mittie Harris Bennett.

She was a former employee of Glenville State College and was retired from Kent State University, Ohio.

Surviving are one son, William Kerby of Normantown; one grandson, Richard Kerby of Normantown; one sister, Bessie Vannoy of Strongsville, Ohio; one brother, Virgie Bennett of Florida; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Semilda Frederick, and two brothers, Ralph and Hugh Bennett.

Carol Abicht, 44, of Pink, near Arnoldsburg, died Wednes-day, Aug. 16, 2006, at her home.

She was born in Akron, Ohio, the daughter of Thomas Foster, Sr., and Barbara Rankin Foster of Akron.

Surviving are one daughter, Christina Youngblood of Rittman, Ohio; one son, William of Arnoldsburg; two sisters, Cheryl Foster of Barberton, Ohio, and Bonnie Ferrebee of Akron; one brother, Thomas Foster, Jr., of Akron; two grandchildren; grandmother, Martha Rankin of Akron; and special friends, Fred and Marie Mace.

In keeping with her wishes, her body was cremated.

VERA MYRL McLAUGHLIN

Vera Myrl McLaughlin, 84, of Williamstown, died Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2006, at Marietta, Ohio.

She was born at Washburn, Ritchie County, the daughter of the late Newton and Letha Kyer Elliott.

She was a stockholder and employee of the former Mid-Atlantic Glass, Ellenboro. She was a former member of Wesley United Methodist Church, Ellenboro, and attended Marietta Bible Center.

Surviving are two sons, Harold Payton and Paul Payton, both of Williamstown; one sister, Beulah Heffner of Big Springs; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Howard Payton, in 1963; her second husband, Harry McLaughlin, in 1971; and three sisters, Bessie Britton, Lucy Slaven and Mary Tingler.

Services were held at McCullough-Rogers Funeral Home, Pennsboro, with Pastor Myron Guiler officiating. Burial was in Masonic Cemetery, Ellenboro.

FOREST HEINEY

Forest Le Vere Heiney, 86, of Glenville, died Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2006, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital.

He was the son of the late Howard and Retta Hosey Heiney.

He operated F.L. Heiney Dairy for 15 years and operated a Quaker State station and grocery store for 21 years. He served in the Navy as 1st Class Petty Officer stationed on the USS Clearfield during World War II.

Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Pearl Simmons Heiney; one son, Darrell Heiney of Lewisburg; one daughter, Dianna Heiney Smith of Spencer; six sisters, Geneva Snider of Grantsville, Lela Reeder, Juanita Reynolds and Grace Wilson, all of Parkersburg, Elenora Cirric of Aurora, Ohio, and Louise Newbrough of Brohard; two brothers, Harry Heiney of Ravenna, Ohio, and Charles Heiney of Grantsville; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Buddy, Denver and Donald Heiney, and one sister, Marie Masocline.

Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Rev. Kenneth Heiney officiating. Burial was in Betts Cemetery.

CECILE BARNES

Cecile Barnes, 94, of Spencer, died Thursday, Aug. 17, 2006, at Miletree Health Care Center, Spencer.

She was born in Illinois, the daughter of the late John and Effie Downy Booker.

She was a foster grandparent for 14 years and was a homemaker and Baptist.

Surviving are one daughter, Bonnie Brown of Spencer; two grandsons; four great-grandchildren; and one niece.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Barnes; six brothers; and six sisters.

Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg. Burial was in Nobe Cemetery.

ROGER PAUL PARSONS

Roger Paul Parsons, 57, of Millstone, died Friday, Aug. 18, 2006, at West Virginia University Medical Center.

He was born in Calhoun County, the son of Henry Marks of Millstone and the late Vena Marks.

He was former employer of Burke-Parsons-Bowlby Corp. and was a foreman at Gatewood Products, Inc.

Surviving in addition to his father are one daughter, Laura Murphy of Millstone, and two grandchildren, Rachelle and Shania Murphy.

Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville. Burial was in Sand Ridge Cemetery.

MILDRED GERTRUDE MALONA

Mildred Gertrude Malona, 89, of Mineral Wells, died Satur-day, Aug. 19, 2006, at Worthington Manor Skilled Nursing Facility.

She was born at Yellow Creek, the daughter of the late Jacob and Mary Eva Rexroad Frederick.

She was a homemaker and a member of Grace Gospel Church.

Surviving are one son, James Warren Malona of Pettyville; one daughter, Barbara V. Roberts of Westlake Village, Calif.; 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James B. Malona, in 1995; one daughter, Karen J. Alderigi; three brothers; and two sisters.

Services were held at Grace Gospel Church, Pettyville, with Pastor Michael Allen officiating, and burial in Sunset Memory Gardens.

SHARLENE CROUSER

Sharlene Crouser, 74, of Ravenswood, died Sunday, Aug. 20, 2006, at her daughter’s home in Ravenswood.

She was born in Arnoldsburg, the daughter of the late Jonas and Opal Dorsey Davis.

She was retired from the City of Ravenswood as hostess to the community building and was a member of North United Methodist Church, Ravenswood.

Surviving are two daughters, Janice Null of Ravenswood, and Connie McCoy of Wiseburg; two
god-children, Karen and Steve Bunner of St. Marys; one brother, Bill Davis of Pomeroy, Ohio; one sister, Candice Maher of Sebring, Ohio; and two grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one grandson, Scottie McCoy, and one sister, Mary Helen Hannaford.

There was no service.

LOCIE IDENA MORRIS

Locie Idena Batten Morris, 85, of Chloe, died Monday, Aug. 28, 2006, at her home.

She was born at Walton, the daughter of the late Sammuel and Julia Abigail Romine Batten.

Surviving are two sons, Clarence Batten of South Charleston and Okey “Buck” Morris and wife Kay of Chloe; one daughter, Mary Gail Cross and husband Floyd of Chloe; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and her caregiver, Wendy Cadle Taylor of Nebo.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Okey Morris, Sr.; two brothers, Alfred and Faud Batten; and one sister, Zena Batten Pence.

LAURA SIMONS BELL

Laura Simons Bell, 88, of Spencer, died Monday, Aug. 28, 2006, at her home.

She was born at Oka, the daughter of the late Thomas and Virginia Griffin Simons.

She was a retired employee of Spencer State Hospital and a former employee of Roane General Hospital and Spencer Grade School.

Surviving are two sons, Joe Simons of Winfield and Steve Bell of Spencer; one daughter, Sherry Bell of Spencer; six grand-children; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Bell; one son, George Thomas Bell; six brothers, Cecil, Ofa, Willard, Bruce, Russell and Everette Simons; and three sisters, Allie White Lowery, Anna Boggs and Evelyn Simons.

Services were held at John H. Taylor Funeral Home, Spencer, with Rev. Leon B. Strickland officiating. Burial was in Clover Cemetery.

GUINEVERE ‘Guin’ ELLIOTT

Guinevere R. “Guin” Elliott, 79, died Friday, Aug. 25, 2006, at Obici Hospital, Suffolk, Va., where she resided with her son.

She was born in Calhoun County, the daughter of the late Coy and Luerna Robinson.

She was a member of First Baptist Church, Grantsville, and had worked at Rubber Fabricators and county clerk’s office and was retired from Calhoun Library.

Surviving are one son, Michael; two daughters, Nancy and Bobi; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Robert “Tuck” Elliott, whom she married Nov. 22, 1945; three sisters, Lurland, Gertrude and Greta; and one brother, Harold.

Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville. Burial was in Bethlehem Cemetery, near Grantsville.

MARY STARKEY

Mary S. Starkey, 83, of Parkersburg, died Friday, Aug. 25, 2006, at her home.

She was born at Apple Farm, the daughter of the late George and Bessie Stump Wilson.

She was a 1942 graduate of Calhoun County High School and member of Knotts Memorial United Methodist Church, Grantsville. She was president of United Methodist Women for many years.

Surviving are one daughter, Hope Phillips of Mineral Wells; three sons, George Hannah of New Mexico, Edwin Hannah of Parkersburg and Frederick Hannah of New Market, Va.; 10 grand-children; 10 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and one step-son, Greg Starkey.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William B. Starkey; three brothers, Luke, Henry and Hugh; four sisters, Treacy Jane, Eda, Donnie and an infant sister; one grandson; one grand-daughter; and one step-daughter, Joyce Ann Starkey.

Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville. Burial was in Bethlehem Cemetery, near Grantsville.

WILLIAM ‘Bill’ MATHEWS

William J. “Bill” Mathews, 87, of Vienna, died Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2006, at his residence.

He was born in Grantsville, the son of the late William James and Bess Williams Mathews,Sr.

He graduated from Parkersburg High School and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and remained in the military reserves for 29 years until his retirement as a Lt. Colonel. He was a member of American Legion Post 15 and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He worked for W.Va. Dept. of Highways, retiring after 41 years of service. He was a member of Eureka Masonic Lodge 40, Grantsville, 32nd degree Scottish Rite Bodies, Charleston, and Nemesis Shrine, Parkersburg. He was a member of Salvation Army advisory board, American Red Cross and Vienna Baptist Church, where he was a deacon, member of Men’s Chorus, and founding member of Men’s Quartet.

Surviving are his wife of 66 years, Mary Anita Hathaway Mathews; two sons, Ret. Col. John R. Mathews of Washington and David M. Mathews of Johnstown, Ohio; four daughters, Sallie M. Romano of Clarksburg, Linda Towner of Washington, Marty Rhodes of Vienna and Liz Yatrakis of Lausanne, Switzerland; 13 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Matthew Foster Mathews.

Services were held at Vienna Baptist Church with Rev. William R. Thomas officiating. Burial was in Evergreen North Cemetery with full military honors by American Legion Post 15 and Masonic Graveside Rites by Masonic Lodge.

ROBERT SNIDER

Robert P. Snider, 79, of Brohard, died Friday, Aug. 25, 2006, in Williamsburg, Va.

He was born at Brohard, the son of the late James B. and Esther Busch Snider.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was assembler and maintenance mechanic at Packard Electric, G.M. Division, Warren, Ohio, for 35 years. He attended Strait Creek Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Isabelle Jones Snider; one son, John A. Snider; two daughters, Debra D. Morris and Lori L. Jenkins; eight grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

ERNEST HOSEY

Ernest F. Hosey, 81, of Morgantown, died Saturday, Sept. 2, 2006, at his home.

He was born in Calhoun County, the son of the late Charles R. and Etta J. Farrell Hosey.

He served during World War II in the 1st Armored Division and saw action in North Africa, Italy, Germany, France and Austria. He retired from Monongahela Power with 30 years of service. He served as Santa Claus for many years in Morgantown and Grantsville. He was mayor of Grantsville, director of Emergency Services for Calhoun County, held offices with Morgantown and Grantsville Lions clubs, and was a lifetime member of Morgantown VFW. He was a member of Knotts Memorial U.M. Church, Grantsville, and former member of Riverside Methodist Church, Westover.

Surviving are his wife of 66 years, Bertha J. Brookover Hosey; two daughters, Ernestine Maust of Rockville, Md., and Jeanne Conte of Morgantown; one son, Fred Hosey of Morgan-town; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Joyce Hosey Ward, in 1990; six brothers, Rome, Harry, Harley, Wade, Shirley and Hale; and two sisters, Ruth Prunty and Retta Heiney.

Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with pastors Carroll McCauley and Tim Davis officiating. Burial was in Betts Cemetery.

GALE HATHAWAY

Gale Hathaway, 83, of Spencer, died Sunday, Sept. 3, 2006, at Roane General Hospital.

He was born in Calhoun County, the son of the late Oscar “Bunt” and Leodie Bennett Hathaway.

He graduated from Calhoun County High School and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He had worked at Goodyear Aircraft, Akron, Ohio, and retired from Monongahela Power Co. with 36 years of service. He was a member of Speed United Methodist Church.

Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Virginia K. Davis Hathaway; one daughter, Mary Newlon of Greensburg, Pa.; one son, Jerry Hathaway of Williamstown; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three sisters, Veta “Pete” Linville, Glena Vannoy and Zelda “Tag” Siers, and two brothers, Roma and Lewis “Jake” Hathaway.

Services were held at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home, Spencer, with Rev. Larry Jones officiating, and burial in Eventide Cemetery, Spencer.

DELLA RUTH BAUM

Della Ruth Baum, 93, of Williamstown, died Monday, Sept. 4, 2006, at Willows Nursing and Rehab Center, Parkersburg.

She was born in Calhoun County, the daughter of the late Benjamin S. and Rozella Saunders Snider.

She was a homemaker and member of the former Williamstown Church of the Nazarene.

Surviving are one son, David Baum of Williamstown; two daughters, Rosie Baum of Williamstown and Becky Frame of Parkersburg; six grandchildren; and three great-grand-children.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Franklin Baum; 11 brothers and sisters; and one granddaughter, Amanda Frame.

Services were held at Leavitt Funeral Home, Parkersburg, with Pastor John Lands officiating. Burial was in Riverview Cemetery, Williamstown.

SHELDA VIOLA PRYOR

Shelda Viola Pryor, 95, of Parkersburg, died Sunday, Sept. 3, 2006, at her home.

She was born in Marietta, Ohio, the daughter of the late Milton and Clara Pickering Berry.

She was a member of South Parkersburg Baptist Church and had attended Rockport Tri-City Full Gospel Church. She was saved at the age of 14 and received the call to preach in her 20’s. She had ministered at several locations.

Surviving are three sons, William D. Pryor of Marietta and Dana Lochary and Don Edward Lochary, both of Titusville, Fla.; four daughters, Josephine Foggin of Arnoldsburg, Pearl Arthurs of Parkersburg, Jane Alicia Anderson of North Benton, Ohio, and Dolores Grandon of Titusville; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Purl Delbert Pryor; three brothers; and two sisters.

Services were held at Kimes Funeral Home, Parkersburg, with Rev. Everett Snyder officiating. Burial was in Watertown Cemetery.

ORVIN GLENN BUCK

Orvin Glenn Buck, 75, of Grantsville, died Monday, Sept. 4, 2006, at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Parkersburg.

He was born in Calhoun County, the son of the late Orvan Buck and Vanna Core Buck Waldo.

He graduated from Calhoun County High School in 1951 and served in the U.S. Air Force for four years at Keesler Air Force Base, Biloxi, Miss. He was retired from Pennzoil Corp. as a welder. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Grantsville, VFW Post 5959 and Eureka Lodge #40, AF&AM, He was a Shriner, active in Boy Scouts of America and an umpire for youth baseball.

Surviving are his wife, Virginia Weaver Buck; two sons, Stephen L. Buck of Williamstown and William C. Buck of Grantsville; one brother, Garland R. Buck of Columbus, Ohio; and three grandsons, Jeremy L. Buck, S. Mitchell Buck and Jeffrey T. Buck.

He was preceded in death by one brother and two sisters.

Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville. Burial was in Bethlehem Cemetery, near Grantsville, with Masonic graveside rites.

EVELYN LOU WILSON

Evelyn Lou Wilson, 75, of Brohard, died Sunday, Sept. 10, 2006, at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Parkersburg.

She was born at Brohard, the daughter of the late Oval and Daisy Swisher Wilson.

She was a member of Strait Creek Baptist Church, Brohard, where she served many years as the church clerk.

Surviving are three brothers, Delmas Wilson of Brohard, Darl Wilson of Parkersburg and Robert Wilson of Washington; two aunts, Opal Swisher and Genevieve Swisher; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Dallas Wilson, and two nephews, Rodney Wilson and Bo Wilson.

Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with burial in Hartley Cemetery, Brohard.

ERNESTINE HARDMAN

Ernestine Hall Hardman, 70, of Stouts Mills, died Friday, Sept. 15, 2006, at her residence.

She was born in Calhoun County, the daughter of the late Ray and Erma Runyon Hall.

She was a homemaker, former employee of Kinney Shoe Corp., and a Baptist.

Surviving are one son, Douglas Hardman of Tanner; two daughters, Tena Jones of Stouts Mills and Debra Shiflet of Stumptown; one sister, Madeline Beal of Ohio; one brother, Virgil Ray Hall of Stouts Mills; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Douglas Hardman, in 1978.

Services were held at Ellyson Mortuary, Glenville, with Rev. Howard Swick officiating, and
burial in Sand Fork Cemetery.

LOWELL THOMAS HUNT, SR.

Lowell Thomas Hunt, Sr., 67, of Palestine, died Saturday, Sept. 9, 2006, at his residence.

He was born in Arnoldsburg, the son of the late Charles Hurley and Erma K. Anderson Hunt.

He was an operating engineer with local 132. He was a member of Jr. Order of United American Mechanics and attended Pisgah United Methodist Church, Palestine.

Surviving are his wife of 47 years, Joan Rupert Hunt; one daughter, JoAnn Hunt of Belpre; two sons, Lowell Thomas Hunt, Jr., and Stanley Hunt, both of Elizabeth; six brothers and sisters, Jesse William Hunt of Spencer, James Hunt of Clarksville, Tenn., Jean Royston of East Pine, Md., Kathy Hunt, Chester Hunt and Eileen Hunt; five grandchildren; and three great-grandsons.

Memorial service held at convenience of the family.

BESSIE ‘Liz’ BENNETT

Bessie E. “Liz” Bennett, 77, of Parkersburg, died Thursday, Sept. 14, 2006, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital.

She was born in Grantsville, the daughter of the late Gerald and Garnet Clark Graham.

She retired from Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital where she was a cook. She was a Christian.

Surviving are five children, Ward “Buck” Bennett and Vera Bennett, both of Parkersburg, and Hope Lanning, Billy Bennett and Sandy Hendricks, all of Princeton; four brothers and sisters, Naomi Schoonover of Granville, Ohio, Billy Graham of Chillicothe, Ohio, Wanda Vining of Rutland, Ohio, and Jimmy Graham of Columbus, Ohio; seven grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ward Bennett; one daughter, Judy Doherty; step-mother, Goldie Graham; one grandson, Adam Lanning; and dearest friend, David J. Morris.

Services were held at Leavitt Funeral Home, Parkersburg, with Rev. Norman Butler officiating.

DOROTHY ANN WESTFALL

Dorothy Ann Westfall, 83, of Glenville, died Thursday, Sept. 14, 2006.

She was the daughter of the late Clyde and Nellie Shouldis Dalton. In 1953, she and her husband moved to Glenville and started Dalton Store Co. Later, another store was opened in Grantsville. She retired after 33 years. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church.

Surviving are one son, John C. Westfall of Glenville; two daughters, Jane Kennedy of Ripley and JoAnn Powell of St. Marys; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Chester, and one brother, Clyde Dalton, Jr., of Clendenin.

Services were held at Ellyson Mortuary, Glenville, with Rev. Ronzel Roberts officiating. Burial was in Meadow Lane Cemetery.

GOLDIE RICHARDS

Goldie H. Shimer Arthur Richards, 94, of Grantsville, died Friday, Sept. 15, 2006, at her home.

She was the daughter of the late Okey and Annie Cunningham Shimer and a lifelong resident of Grantsville.

Surviving are one son, Richard Lindell Arthur of Elyria, Ohio; four grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and three sisters, Arthelia Richards of Elizabeth, Blanche Kendall of Mt. Zion and Pauline Cline of Twinsburg, Ohio.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ted Arthur, and four sisters, Clareth Wilson, Ollie Ford, Pearl Reed and Virginia Williams.

Private family service was held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville.

BEULAH MACEL BAILEY

Beulah Macel Bailey, 87, of Nicut, died Thursday, Sept. 21, 2006, at the home of her sister.

She was the daughter of the late Elbert and Josephine Boone Brady.

She was a homemaker.

Surviving are four brothers, Bernard Brady of Walker, Borden Brady of Methias and Blair and Brock Brady, both of Shock; two sisters, Bernice Rogers of Baltimore, Md., and Barbara Sauer of Orma; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Henry Bailey; one daughter, Linda Bailey Fisher; one son, Michael Bailey; and one brother, Blaine Brady.

Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg. Burial was in Bailey Cemetery, Shock.

VICTOR KIRBY

Victor Kirby, 97, of Spencer, died Thursday, Sept. 21, 2006, at home.

He was born in Calhoun County, the son of the late Rufus E. and Mary Adams Kirby.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion Post 21, Spencer, and a farmer. He was a member of Alexander Baptist Church and attended Gilboa Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Patricia Kirby; two step-sons, Thomas Sinclair of Spencer and Mark Sinclair of Barberton, Ohio; one sister, Eula Nelson of Vienna; two brothers, Cleo Kirby of Parkersburg and Wilbert Kirby of Mt. Zion; and five step-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Geraldine Bell Kirby, and three brothers, Boyd, Delbert and Forrest Kirby.

Services were held at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home, Spencer, with Rev. Leon Strickland and Bill Walton officiating. Burial was in Eventide Cemetery with military graveside rites.

BILLY DEAN KING

Billy Dean King, 72, of Leatherbark, died Friday, Sept. 22, 2006, at home.

He was born in Calhoun County, the son of Pearl Wallbrown King of Leatherbark and the late Willie Lee King.

He was a 798 union pipeliner and a Protestant.

Surviving in addition to his mother are two daughters, Pamela King and Linda Flinn, both of Portland, Ohio; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; companion, Becky Hunt; seven step-children; 11 step-grandchildren; one brother, Bernard King of Ripley; and his former wife, Evone Donohew of Ravenswood.

He was preceded in death by one step-daughter, Amanda L. Hunt.

FREDERICK HATHAWAY

Frederick H. Hathaway, M.D., 91, of Lincoln, Nebraska, died Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2006.

He was born in Grantsville, the son of the late Frederick S. and Eva Dye Hathaway.

He was a Captain in the Medical Corps of the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II and received the Army Commendation Medal. He graduated from West Virginia University and received his medical degree from University of Louisville School of Medicine in 1939. He was in the practice of internal medicine in Lincoln from 1946-87. He was with Veterans Affairs Adjudication Division since 1988. He was a member and officer of numerous medical associations, Trinity United Methodist Church and American Legion Post 3.

Surviving are one son, Dr. Frederick Hathaway of Lincoln; one daughter, Sarah Ann Hathaway of Lincoln; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one brother, David Hathaway of Bexley, Ohio.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis Hinton Hathaway, and one sister, Virginia Hathaway Kirby.

Private family services were held at Lincoln Memorial Park.

OPAL COON MILLER

Opal Coon Miller, 91, of Barberton, Ohio, died Friday, Sept. 15, 2006, at Barberton Citizens Hospital.

She was born in Calhoun County, the daughter of the late Calvin and Rosabelle Carpenter.

She was a homemaker.

Surviving are one daughter, Macel K. Waggoner of New Franklin, Ohio; two sons, Ezra Eugene Coon, Jr., of Spencer and Cleo Charley Coon of Norton, Ohio; 17 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grand-children.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Ezra Coon; her second husband, Earl Miller; two daughters, Hazel Virginia Waggoner and Bethel Lamp; and one brother, Commodore Carpenter.

Services were held at John H. Taylor Funeral Home, Spencer. Burial was in Carpenter Cemetery, Hur.

VIVIAN BRADFORD

Vivian M. Bradford, 95, of Nicut, died Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2006, at Minnie Hamilton Health Care Center.

She was born in Chattanooga, Okla., the daughter of the late Theodore and Stella Hughes Meadows.

She was a former employee of Siani Hospital, Baltimore, Md.

Surviving are one daughter, Jane A. Neal and husband Charles of Nicut; six grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one great-grandchild, one brother, and three sisters.

The body was cremated. Services were held at the convenience of the family.

Edith O. Fluharty, 89, of Harrisville, died Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2006, in Pullman, at her caregiver’s residence.

She was born in Big Bend, the daughter of the late Henderson and Bertha Metz Richards.

She was a member of Harrisville Baptist Church and June Rebekah Lodge 56, Smithville.

Surviving are two daughters, Annabelle (Ann) Mayhew of Mineral Wells and Sharon Sue (Suzi) Moore of Parkersburg; one son, Randall Lee Fluharty of Smithville; nine grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Durl Fluharty; one son, Gayford (Sonny) Fluharty; and one grandson, Gary Fluharty.

RUTH LINVILLE

Ruth E. Linville, 77, of Russells Point, Ohio, died Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2006, at Memorial Hospital, Marysville, Ohio.

She was born in Stinson, the daughter of the late Okey and Zella Postalwait Miller.

She worked for Rubber Fabricators, Grantsville, in the 1950s and owned several taverns in the Calhoun County area in the 1960s.

Surviving are two sons, Paul Phipps of Albany, Ohio, and Wayne Phipps of Marysville; two brothers, Jack Miller of Charleston and Ray Miller of Macon, Ga.; two sisters, Alma Gay Vincent of Parkersburg and Phyllis Bailey of Stinson; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Don Kenton Phipps; her second husband, William “Dick” Linville; an infant daughter; and one grandson, Steven Wayne Phipps.

Mark Shimer, 45, of Creston, died Friday, Sept. 29, 2006, at The Arbors of Marietta.

He was born in Parkersburg, the son of the late Ernest D. and Anna E. Ewing Shimer.

He was a self-employed carpenter.

Leota Leslie, 72, of Soddy-Daisy, Tenn., died Saturday, Sept. 2, 2006, at her home.

She was born at Five Forks, the daughter of the late Wattie and Bertha Ellen Frederick Burrows.

She attended New Life Baptist Church.

MARVIN EARL WALDBESER

Marvin Earl Waldbeser, 78, of Grantsville, died Saturday, Sept. 7, 2006, at Oakland Veterans Administration, Pittsburgh, Pa.

He was born in Morton, Ill., the son of the late Edward and Clara Schoenbein Waldbeser.

He was a U.S. Air Force veteran.

Surviving are one son, David Waldbeser of Martinez, Calif., and friend, Edna Kingsbury of Grantsville.

As per his request, his remains were cremated.

Meryl Boggs, 94, died Friday, Oct. 6, 2006, at Harmar Place, Marietta.

She was born near Spencer, the daughter of A.P. and Byrd Sinnett.

She was a housewife, member of Little Hocking United Methodist Church and original member of Little Hocking Garden Club.

Surviving are one daughter, Sharon Lamb of New Albany, Ohio; two sons, John of Indianapolis, Ind., and Paul of Marietta; 14 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Daris N. Boggs; two sisters, Flotie Sinnett of Spencer and Thelma Lowe of Melbourne, Fla.; and two brothers, Denver Sinnett of Martinsburg and Harlan Sinnett of Grantsville.

Helen F. Frame, 83, of Parkersburg, died Thursday, Oct. 5, 2006, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital.

She was born in The Plains, Ohio, the daughter of the late Edward and Minnie Lattimer Preston.

Paul E. Nichols, 80, of Spencer, died Friday, Oct. 6, 2006, at Roane General Hospital.

He was born at Clover, the son of the late George and Gatha Digman Nichols.

He was an oilfield worker and retired from Pennzoil.

Surviving are his wife, Norma J. Nichols; one son, Mark A. Nichols of Spencer; two sisters, Opal Selmon of Grantsville and Brenice Little of Davisville; two brothers, Georgie Nichols of Grantsville and Burl Nichols of Mt. Zion; and three grandchildren.

Thomas E. Bell, 78, died Sunday, Oct. 8, 2006.

He was born in Annamoriah, the son of the late Earl A. and Monnie L. Davis Bell.

He retired from B&W in 1981 after 34 years of service. He was a member of Reimer Road Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Martha “Jean” Duskey Bell; one son, Steven T. Bell; one daughter, Brenda J. LaFaso; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one brother, Shirley Bell.

Arnold Ray Norman, 83, of Orma, died Monday, Oct. 9, 2006, at Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital, Weston.

He was born at Beech, the son of the late Isaac Homer and Lula Brannon Norman.

He was a farmer and attended Fairview Union Church.

Surviving are one brother, Orville Norman of Orma; one sister, Pearl Conrad of Orma; one aunt, Zadia Greathouse of Richwood; and several nieces and nephews.

She was a lifelong resident and homemaker in Calhoun County and a member of Brooksville Baptist Church and Senior Citizens Center, Grantsville.

She was born in Calhoun County, the daughter of the late Walter and Mary Givens Burrows.

She was a school bus driver for Warren School District and drove for Community Action, Marietta.

Surviving are two daughters, Joyce Wright of Williamstown and Robin Null of Coolville; one son, Ron Lantz of Elizabeth; 10 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three brothers, Leonard, Donald and Donnie Burrows; and two sisters, her twin Irene Siers and Eveline Fry.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Thurl Lantz; three children, Teddy Leo, Kitty Lou Lantz and Sandra Eakle; one brother, Hayward Burrows; and one sister, Imogene Davis.

Surviving are one daughter, Barbara Wilson of Big Springs; two sons, Lyle Dennis Snider of East Lake, Ohio, and Michael Lynch  of  Cleveland,   her   caretaker;   seven grandchildren, Lyle, Bryan and Homer II Wilson, Dennis and Tim Snider, Jamie Muniz and Tonya Ratliff; 15 great-grandchildren; one sister, Eldine Wilson of Parkersburg; and one aunt, Bernadine Braham of Parkersburg.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Dennis Snider; her second husband, Norman Lynch; two granddaughters, Darla Dee Snider and Rayanna Louise Lancaster; and one brother, Clyde Richards.

ERNEST BUSH

Ernest L. Bush, 79, of Palm Harbor, Fla., died Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2006, at his residence.

He was born in Big Springs and moved to the Palm Harbor area in 1992 from Parkersburg. He served in the U.S. Army in World War II. He was a warehouseman for a chemical manufacturing company.

Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Willa Dean Bush; one son, Ernest Michael Bush of Palm Harbor; three brothers, Jack Bush of Mineral Wells, Charles Bush of Parkersburg and Porter Bush of Lubeck; three sisters, Marie Weese of Beckley, Margie Mathess of Parkersburg and Maxine Crouch of Vienna; and two grandchildren.

EVELYN SOLE BURROWS

Evelyn Sole Burrows, 87, of Parkersburg, died Saturday, Oct. 21, 2006, at St. Joseph Hospital, Parkersburg.

She was born at Quaker City, Ohio, the daughter of the late Harold and Jessie M. Groll Sole.

She was a resident of Five Forks until moving to Parkersburg in 1959.

Surviving are two daughters, Betsy Lynch of Laura, Ohio, and Merlene Cline of Pataskala, Ohio; one son, Dean Burrows of Parkersburg; 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

FRANCES SMITH

Frances Smith, 75, of Fountain Hills, Ariz., died Sunday, July 30, 2006, at her home.

 She was born at Milo, the daughter of the late Pascal D. and Beulah Starcher Bailey.

She attended Calhoun County High School and Glenville State College. She worked many years in
the medical profession in Akron, Ohio, before retiring in 1990.

Surviving are two brothers, Marvin (Buddy) Bailey of West Virginia and Dick Bailey of Alabama; one sister, Sandra Kovac of Fountain Hills; and a loving companion, Philip Moe of California.

She was preceded in death by eight siblings.

ALMA MAE FREED

Alma Mae Freed, 68, of Norman Ridge, died Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2006, at Minnie Hamilton Health Care Center.

She was the daughter of the late Wilbert Nicholson and Ona Gay Kelley.

Gilead Wilmer Gault, Jr., 52, of Parkersburg, died Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2006, at his residence.

He was born in Wood County, the son of the late Gilead Wilmer and Iona Virginia Wilson Gault.

He was retired from Cloverdale Meat Packing with more than 25 years of service.

Surviving is his wife, Freda Lipps Gault; two children, Darren Gault and Crystal Sims, both of Parkersburg; step-children, Mary Morris of Parkersburg, William Lipps of Veto, Tina Layner of Kentucky, William C. Frederick H. Waybright, 69, of Reedy, died Thursday, Nov. 2, 2006, in CAMC Memorial Hospital, Charleston.

He was born in Ripley, the son of the late Harvey Harrison and Iva Mae Raines Waybright.

He was a retired employee of General Excavating, Inc., Winchester, Va., and State Construction and Cedar Lakes Conference Center, Ripley. He was a U.S. Army veteran of Vietnam War and member of Harmony Baptist Church.

Surviving are two sons, Fred Waybright of Arnoldsburg and Tim Waybright of Georgia; two daughters, Kelli Weatherholtz of Woodstock, Va., and Tracy Rhodes of Mt. Jackson, Va.; one sister, Stella Jenkins of Jacksonville, N.C.; one brother, Nelson Otho Waybright of Cleveland, Ohio; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by an infant son, Stacy Waybright; one brother, Ronald Waybright; and one sister, Margaret Reynolds.

Doris Normalee Bower Cain, 69, of Madison, Ohio, died Friday, Oct. 20, 2006, at her home.

She was born in Henrietta, the daughter of the late James and Audrey Merle Kendell Bower.

She worked for Hy-Ko Products, Bedford, Ohio, for 18 years and was a homemaker.

He was born in Calhoun County, the son of the late Ralph and Ida Whipkey Nicholas.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran and a member of Grantsville VFW.

Surviving are three brothers, Cleston Nicholas of Grantsville, Charles Nicholas of Harrisville and Phillip Nicholas of Parkersburg; four sisters, Colleen Burdette of Vienna, Phyllis Belt of Tucson, Ariz., Sandra Richter of Freepont and Alta Richards of Big Springs; and several nieces and nephews.

Madalene A. Riddle, 89, of Ashland, Ohio, died Friday, Nov. 10, 2006, at Good Shepherd Nursing Home.

She was born in Grantsville, the daughter of the late Grant and Anna Leach Roberts.

She had resided in Ashland since 1945. She was a homemaker and had previously worked for Faultless Rubber Co. and C.E. Ward Co. She was a former member of Otterbein United Methodist Church, New Philadelphia, Ohio, Christ United Methodist Church, Loyal Workers Sunday School Class and Builders Group, Ashland, and a member of Vermillion Baptist Church and Joy 2 Adult Sunday School Class, Perrysville, Ohio, and Red Hat Society.

Surviving are three daughters, Manoka Hassinger and Lenore Reich, both of Ashland, and
Myrna Edie of Greenfield, Ind.; seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Eleanor Mohrman of Lakeland, Fla.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Alpha G. Riddle, on Aug. 14, 1998; three sisters, Pearl Fowler, Zee Stout and Maxine Beall Walker; and one brother, Lee Roberts.

accident near Spencer.

She was born in Charleston, the daughter of Chad Pearson and Kimberly Tanner of Arnoldsburg.

Surviving in addition to her parents are maternal grandparents, Frances and Gail Tanner of Arnoldsburg; paternal grandmother, Joann Pauley of Orma; and aunts and uncles, Barbara Pearson, Gary and Veronica May, Kathy Tanner, Joyce Crouser, Howard and Betty Tanner, Bim Tanner, Michael and Juliann Tanner, Kevin Dale and Dianne Tanner, Kevin Gale Tanner and Keith and Marie Tanner.

Sandra Kay Jarvis, 61, of Chloe, died Monday, Nov. 13, 2006, at Charleston Area Medical Center.

She was born at Chelyan, the daughter of the late Richard and Nellie Kirkpatrick Hawks.

She was employed by Calhoun County Committee on Aging at the West Fork center and was a homemaker. She was a member of Unity Gospel Tabernacle, Stinson.

Surviving are her husband of 44 years, Charter Jarvis; two daughters, Karen Cottrell and Kim Perkins; three sisters, Anna Coble, Wanda Rose and Sharon King; three grandchildren, Misty King, Katie Perkins and Brandon Cottrell; and one great-grandson, Riley Perkins.

She was preceded in death by her step-mother, Dahlia Hawks.

Services were held at Unity Gospel Tabernacle, with Pastor Geoffrey Hamrick officiating. Burial was in Clark Jarvis Cemetery, Chloe.

Violet Jane “Midge” Cobb Rader, 65, of Elizabeth, died at home.

She was born at Clendenin, the daughter of the late John Jackson and Gertrude Florence Deel Cobb.

She was retired from General Electric, Parkersburg.

Surviving are two sons, Clay Rader and his wife Kimberly and Scott Rader and his wife Violet, all of Annamoriah; four sisters, Maye Lipscomb of Pinch, Dolly Graley of Alum Creek and Faye Jarrett and Joyce Patton, both of Clendenin; three brothers, Paul Cobb, Johnny Cobb and Melton Cobb, all of Clendenin; a special friend, Herb Stevens of Clendenin; and four grandchildren, Sierra, Erica, Roman and Seth.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Warren Cobb.

Services were held at Matics Funeral Home, Clendenin, with Pastor William M. Cottrell officiating. Burial was in Cobb Cemetery, Clendenin.

LARRY STUMP

Larry E. Stump, 56, of Manchester, Ohio, died Sunday, Oct. 1, 2006.

He was the son of Eleanor Stump of Barberton, Ohio, and the late Earl Page Stump.

He was a U.S. Marine veteran of Vietnam and was employed at Aircraft Braking Systems for 27 years and AFSCME Ohio Council 8 for 10 years. He was a member of Akron Baptist Temple.

Surviving are his wife of 27 years, Linda Stump; one daughter, Emily Ream of Ashland, Ky.; one son, Nathan of Manchester; four sisters, Karen Cromer, Pat Wiley, Nancy Copeland and Kim Dunham; two brothers, Bill Stump and Mark Stump; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Services were held at Schermesser Funeral Home, Man-chester, with Rev. Ernie Kemppel officiating. Burial was in Manchester Cemetery with veteran’s service by Copley VFW Post 7971 and American Legion Post 473.

HAZEL MARIE JETT

Hazel Marie Jett, 64, of Wooster, Ohio, died Thursday, Nov. 16, 2006, at Country Point nursing facility, Wooster.

She was born in Zanesville, Ohio, the daughter of the late Paul and Stella Wayne Jett.

Surviving are three sons, Kenneth Jett of Elizabeth, Curtis Marks of Creston and Robert Marks of Chloe; three daughters, Veronica Nagy of Wooster, Gwinna Marks of Parkersburg and Carlena Rock of Salem, Ohio; one half-sister, Vonda Parsons of Anna, Ill.; 15 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one half-brother, Bob Scenes.

Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg, with Rev. Louis Villers officiating. Burial was in Minnora Cemetery.

EDITH LIPSCOMB

Edith M. Lipscomb, 80, of Harrisville, died Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2006, at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Parkersburg.

She was born in Five Forks, the daughter of the late C. Brooks and Viola Reed Cox.

Surviving are three sons, Franklin Lipscomb of Harrisville, Mark Lipscomb of Belpre and Richard Lipscomb of Sanford, N.C.; two daughters, Helen Snyder of Tuppers Plains and Mary Buck of Mineral Wells; two sisters, Avis Wamsley of Five Forks and Nellie Grimm of Stow, Ohio; 12 grandchildren; and 11 great-grand-children.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Grant Lipscomb, and one brother, Darrel Cox.

Services were held at Raiguel Funeral Home, Harrisville, with Rev. John Rexroad officiating. Burial was in Mt. Zion Cemetery, Chevauxdefrise.

CARLESS COY HAYS

Carless Coy Hays, 70, of Spencer, died Monday, Nov. 20, 2006, at Charleston General Hospital.

He was born at Left Hand, Roane County, the son of the late Issach and Mildred Snodgrass Hays.

He was a U.S. Army veteran and was retired from Standard Lafarge Co., Cleveland, Ohio. He was a member of Moose Club, Northfield, Ohio, and VFW Post 5959, Grantsville.

Surviving are his wife, LaVonne Hays; four daughters, Carla Gier of Florida, Ann Self of Arnoldsburg and Tina Kissel and Tammy Bowen, both of Kenova; three step-daughters, Linda Hartman of Garrettsville, Ohio, Deborah Britton of Gilbert, Ariz., and Jessica Quinn of Aurora, Ohio; three brothers, Melvin Hays and wife Marie and Danny Hays and wife Judy, all of Arnoldsburg, and Larry Hays and wife Margaret of Ravenna, Ohio; two sisters, Eleanor Smith and husband Charles and Patty Keough and husband Jack, all of Arnoldsburg; five grandchildren, Kayla and Kimmy Self of Arnoldsburg, Charity Spencer of Spencer, Adam Stump of Grantsville and Marcus Gier of Florida; two great-grandchildren; and 10 step-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother, William R. Hays, and one granddaughter, Cindy Self.

Burial was in Clover Cemetery, near Spencer.

LOVIE DELORES COLLINS

Lovie Delores Richards Collins, 85, of Big Springs, died Saturday, Nov. 25, at Minnie Hamilton Health Care Center.

She was the daughter of the late Emory V. and Ora E. Bartlett Richards. She was a Methodist and a homemaker.

Surviving are her husband of 57 years, Grover H. Collins; two daughters, Janice Novak of Seven Hills, Ohio, and Lucy Hill of Washington; two sons, Phillip Kelley of Atwater, Ohio, and Bill Collins of Mt. Zion; two brothers, Obed Richards and Hobert Richards, both of Big Springs; one sister, Lola of Penobscot, Maine; 14 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Hollie Kelley, in 1946; seven brothers, Lester, Lee, Orla, Park, Cleo, Woodrow and Lawrence; and two sisters, Alta and Genevieve.

Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Rev. Carroll McCauley officiating. Burial was in Nobe Cemetery.

OCIE (Judy) HELMICK

Ocie J. (Judy) Helmick, 62, of Nicut, died Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2006, at Charleston Area Medical Center’s Memorial Division.

She was born in Minnora, the daughter of the late Emerson and Pearl Keener Bailey.

Surviving are her husband, Eugene G. Helmick; two children, Wayne Helmick of Manassas, Va., and Sandy Hoskins of Charles Town; two sisters, Velma Conner of Furndale, Md., and Virginia Lowry of Orrville, Ohio; two brothers, Adderson Bailey of Orrville and Steven Bailey of Granville, Ohio; four grandsons; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by five siblings.

Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg, with Rev. Loren Price officiating. Burial was in Metz Cemetery, Nicut.

MARY BOWSER BICKEL

Mary Bowser Bickel, 100, of Parkersburg, died Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2006, at Eagle Pointe Care Center.

She was born in Calhoun County.

Surviving are one son, Robert F. Bickel of Charlotte, N.C.; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one sister, Winifred Bowser of Parkersburg; several nieces; and one nephew.

She was preceded in death by her husband, F.H. Bickel; one daughter, Barbara Ann Davy; three brothers, Paul, Bretney and Owen Bowser; and one sister, Margaret.

Graveside services were held at Mount Olivet Cemetery, with Rev. James Kinsler officiating.

JOANN PARKS JORDAN

Joann Parks Jordan, 73, died Sunday, Dec. 17, 2006, at Otterbein Portage Valley, Pemberville, Ohio.

She was born in Calhoun County, the daughter of the late Oren and Maxine Parks.

She was retired and worked part-time at Pemberville IGA.

Surviving are her husband, Paul Jordan; five children of Pemberville; one step-daughter, Judy Meadows and husband Roger of Annamoriah; one brother, Lawrence (Bud) Parks and wife Betty; and four sisters, Kathryn Walker and husband Irvin, Donna Newell and husband Jack, Marie Blair and husband Jim, and Betty Walker and husband On, all of Big Bend.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Kenneth Bell; one brother, Dale Parks and his infant twin sister; one nephew, David Walker; one niece, Terry Parks; and one great-nephew, Jordan Blair.

Services were held at Full Gospel Lighthouse Church, Big Bend, with Rev. Jerry Cottrell officiating, and burial in Big Bend Cemetery.

CHESTER WILSON

Chester K. Wilson, 81, of Holiday, Fla., died Monday, Nov. 27, 2006, at Community Hospital, New Port Richey, Fla.

He was born in Calhoun County, the son of the late Oley and Jane Wilson.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and an electrician at Kardex, Inc. He was a member of American Legion Post 86 and was a Methodist.

Surviving are his wife, Betty; one son, Scott of Columbus, Ohio; two daughters, Sharon Dunlap of Willoughby, Ohio, and Melanie Kay Salazar of San Jose, Calif.; one sister, Crystal Kight of Charleston; and seven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Foster Wilson.

Memorial services were held at Morgan Funeral Home, New Port Richey.

NATHANIEL ‘Tater’ LYONS

Nathaniel L. “Tater” Lyons, 28, of Linn, died Monday, Dec. 25, 2006, at Morgantown.

He was born at Weston, the son of Nina Wilfong of Linn and the late David Wilfong, and step-son of John Wilfong of Linn.

He was a 1997 graduate of Gilmer County High School. He was an Eagle Scout, assistant scout master, farmer and member of Sand Fork Church of God of Prophecy.

Surviving are two brothers, David M. Lyons of Burnsville and J.D. Wilfong of Weston; two sisters, Joanie Wilfong of Harrisville, Ohio, and Stephanie Wilfong of Northeast, Pa.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Charles M. Lyons, and grandparents, Robert and Ruth Lyons and Russell and Losie Carter.

Services were held at Sand Fork Church of God of Prophecy, with Rev. Bryan Groves officiating. Burial was in McHenry Cemetery.

CLYDE SMITH

Clyde E. Smith, 68, of Creston, died Sunday, Dec. 24, 2006, at The Willows, Parkersburg.

He was born in Calhoun County, the son of the late Conda and Goldia Husk Smith.

He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in Korea. He owned and operated Parkersburg Truck Repair Service for many years. He was retired from Calhoun County Schools as a bus driver with 20 years of service.

Surviving are one son, Rick Smith and wife Virginia of Grantsville; two daughters, Michelle Gribben and husband Doug of Elyria, Ohio, and Bobbie Jo Rolston and husband Ryan; five grandchildren, Phillip, Courtney, Harley, Wyatt and Nathen; one great-grandson, Wyatt; three brothers, Robert of Creston, Floyd of Elyria and Jerry of Mineral Wells; and several nieces of nephews.

He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Billie Jo Smith.

Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Rev. Delmas Stutler officiating. Burial was in Hur Cemetery.

MINNIE MAE CAIN

Minnie Mae Cain, 71, of Parkersburg, died Thursday, Dec. 21, 2006, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital.

She was born in Gilmer County, the daughter of the late James and Fonda Radabaugh Whipkey.

She was a homemaker and attended House of Worship.

Surviving are her husband of 51 years, Frank Cain; one son, Frank Cain of Belpre, Ohio; three daughters, Nancy Hoselton of Mineral Wells, Carole Fortney of Belpre and Dianne Hayes of Parkersburg; one sister, Barbara Roberts of Nobe; four brothers, Wavel Whipkey of Vienna, Donzel Whipkey and Marvin Whipkey, both of Parkersburg, and Gail Siers of Newark; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Wiladean Amos.

Services were held at Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, South Parkersburg, with Pastor Tim Henson officiating. Burial was in Nobe Cemetery.

ERNA ‘Ernie’ DEEM

Erna “Ernie” Norman Stemple Deem, 89, died Saturday, Dec. 23, 2006, at Ohio Valley Health Care, Parkersburg.

She was born at MacFarlan, the daughter of the late John W. and Elizabeth Smith Norman of Calhoun County.

She had worked at O’Ames Co. and Sears Paint Dept., and was a homemaker. She was a Methodist.

Surviving are one son, Marvin Stemple and wife Peggy of Arnoldsburg; five grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Forest F. Stemple; her second husband, Walter L. Deem; one son, Gerald Bryan Deem; one grandson, Michael Deem; three sisters; and three brothers.

Services were held at Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, Parkersburg, with Rev. Jim Lynch officiating. Burial was in Evergreen South Cemetery.

MILDRED MIRACLE

Mildred Miracle, 87, of Williamstown, died Saturday, Dec. 23, 2006, at Marietta Memorial Hospital.

She was born in Calhoun County, the daughter of the late John A. and Birdie Bayless Johnson.

She was a homemaker and a member of Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church.

Surviving are three sons, Gary Miracle of Vincent, Ohio, and Cecil Miracle and Roger Miracle, both of Williamstown; seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; three sisters, Gladys Digman, Louise Linkous and Daisy Adkins, all of East Liverpool, Ohio; and one brother, Burl “Pete” Johnson of Parkersburg.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, W.H. Miracle, on Jan. 30, 2005; one son, Dan; one grandson; one great-grandson; and four brothers.

Services were held at McClure-Schafer-Lankford Funeral Home, with Rev. Ed Lowe officiating. Burial was in Burnt Hill Cemetery.

REV. ROBERT NICHOLAS

Rev. Robert H. “Preacher Bob” Nicholas, 72, of Glenville, died Sunday, Dec. 24, 2006, at Monongalia General Hospital, Morgantown.

He was born in Revere, the son of the late Hoy C. and Pauline Grogg Nicholas.

He graduated from Tanner High School and attended Glenville State College. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War from 1953-1955. He was an instructor for W.Va. Baptist Convention School of Christian Studies, served on its executive board and chaired the committee on ministerial standing. He was moderator of Little Kanawha Baptist Association and chaired the committee on evangelism. He was senior pastor of First Baptist Church, Glenville, and his ministry in Ohio and West Virginia spanned 43 years, during which time, he served as associate pastor of Blackhorse Baptist Church, Ravenna, Ohio, pastor of Chestnut Street Baptist Church, Wadsworth, Ohio, New England Baptist Church, Bethlehem Baptist Church, Enon Baptist Church, Sand Fork Baptist Church, Burnsville Baptist Church, and First Baptist Church, Grantsville, and interim pastor at First Baptist Church, Weston, and Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Mineral Wells.

Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Eleanor Bell Nicholas; four sons, Robert H. Nicholas II and Kenton Andrew Nicholas, both of Glenville, Eric Warren Nicholas of Cox’s Mill and James E. Moore of Cedarville; two sisters, Betty Jo Roberts of Kent, Ohio, and Wilma Weaver of Parkersburg; one brother, Roger D. Nicholas of Snellville, Ga.; seven grandchildren; one great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews.

Services were held at First Baptist Church, Glenville, with Rev. Ken Heiney officiating. Burial was in Stalnaker Cemetery, Glenville.

ADA NUTTER

Ada Z. Nutter, 88, of Grantsville, died Monday, Dec. 25, 2006, at Minnie Hamilton Health Care Center.

She was born in Calhoun County, the daughter of the late Amos and Virginia Craddock Gibson.

She was a former employee of Chancellor Hotel cafeteria, Parkersburg, and a member of Enon Baptist Church.

Surviving are one son, Richard Hosey of Grantsville; one daughter, Linda Bishop of San Bernadino, Calif.; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and caregiver, Dianne Taylor of Grantsville.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Hale Hosey, and her second husband, Gale Nutter.

Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Rev. Mike Worf officiating. Burial was in Gibson Cemetery, Arnoldsburg.

REGINALD HILLS

Reginald G. Hills, 77, of Big Springs, died Saturday, Dec. 23, 2006, at his residence.

He was born in London, England, the son of the late George A. and Amy Rose Hills.

He was a U.S. Air Force veteran, who was stationed in Germany. He was an electrical engineer for B.F. Goodrich, Grantsville.

Surviving are two sons, Charles Hills of Arlington, Va., and Alan Hills of Portland, Maine; two daughters, Kathryn Heroux of Wilmette, Ill., and Amy Luke of Maywood, Ill.; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ann Hills.

There was no visitation or services.

ANTHONY LEROY POIRIER

Anthony Leroy Poirier, 69, of Grantsville, died Friday, Dec. 29, 2006, at St. Joseph Hospital, Parkersburg.

He was born at Bay City, Mich., the son of the late Anthony R. and Dorothy Tate Poirier.

Surviving are his wife, Mary L. Poirier; two daughters, Dorothy Starkey of Grantsville and Sherry Hill of Detroit, Mich.; and nine grandchildren.
