PAULINE WILSON

Pauline Catherine Berry Wilson, 93, of Big Springs, died Saturday, Dec. 31, 2016.

She was born in Holden, the oldest child of the late Paul and Sophie Berry.

Prior to her marriage, she was a Pallottine Nun, serving at St. Mary’s Hospital. She later worked as director of nursing at SpencerState and Calhoun General hospitals. She was instrumental in implementing the first EMT program in Calhoun County.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bradford L. Wilson; one brother, John Berry; and two sisters, Susie Curry and Mary Brady.

Memorial services will be held at a later date in Logan County.

RUBY FARNSWORTH

Ruby D. Farnsworth, 76, of Mineral Wells, died Monday, Dec. 19, 2016, at Camden Clark Medical Center.

She was born in White Oak, the daughter of the late Allie G. White Lowery and Willard White.

She was a nursing assistant at St. Joseph’s Hospital and a member of Gospel Tabernacle.

Surviving are two sons, Joe Whytsell of Mineral Wells and Craig Farnsworth of Lexington, S.C.; one daughter, Teresa Jones of Belpre, Ohio; two sisters, Edna Harris of Ravenswood and Waveline Fox of Parkersburg; one brother, Russell White of Niles, Mich.; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Sterling Farnsworth, and one niece.

Services were held at Leavitt Funeral Home, Parkersburg, with Pastor Wayne Boone officiating. Burial was in Parkersburg MemorialGardens.

 

DANNY TOPPINGS

Danny R. ‘Snoopy’ Toppings, 50, of Troutman, N.C., died Thursday, Dec. 22, 2016, at home.

He was born in Charleston, the son of Rosetta C. Wheeler Toppings and the late Daniel Toppings of Grantsville.

He was a 1986 graduate of Gilmer County High School. He was employed by Charah, North Carolina, as a heavy equipment operator and was a member of Word of Hope Church, Mooresville, N.C.

Surviving in addition to his mother are his wife, Paula May Loftis Toppings; one daughter, Danyelle N. Toppings; three brothers, Wayne Toppings of Chapmanville, David Toppings of Troutman and Tim Toppings of Grantsville; one sister, Debra Yeager of Grantsville; and cousin, Bobby Toppings of Glenville.

Memorial service will be held at a later date. Burial will be in Chestnut Grove Cemetery, Tanner Creek Road, Gilmer County.

 

JACKIE PARSONS

Jackie Parsons, 85, of Belpre, Ohio, died Monday, Dec. 26, 2016, at Marietta Center.

He was born in Calhoun County, the son of the late Ollie Parsons, Sr., and Dona White Parsons.

He worked for Ohio Local Operators Union Local. He was a United States Army veteran and served in the Korean War.

Surviving are two sons, Doug Parsons of Coolville, Ohio, and Dan Parsons of Marietta, Ohio; one daughter, Jennifer Parsons Wheeler of Cookeville, Tenn.; five grandchildren, Bethany Parsons, Danny “Little Dan” Parsons, Aaron Parsons, Sarah Tucker and Matthew Storms; and two great-grandchildren, John Morgan and Gavin.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Clegg Parsons, and one brother, Ollie, Jr.

WILBERT ‘Ronzel’ ROBERTS

Wilbert “Ronzel” Roberts, 70, of Little Hocking, Ohio, died Friday, Dec. 16, 2016, at Marietta Memorial Hospital.

He was born in Grantsville, the son of the late Brice and Lucy Parsons Roberts.

He attended Souls Refuge Church and retired from O’Ames.

Surviving are his wife of 12 years, Billie Stalnaker Roberts; one daughter, Sherry Ahart; two sons, Rick Roberts and Scott Roberts; 12 grandchildren, Jordan White, Katelyn Bowers, Whitney Roberts, Britney Roberts, Mikayla Roberts, Levi Roberts, Luke Roberts, Brooke Knost, Ashley Roberts, Bradyn Roberts, Nathan Camp and Tori Roberts; two great-granddaughters, Adley Ollom and Shelby Camp; two brothers, Dale Roberts and Kenny Roberts; and three sisters, Dian Bise, Loretta Smith and Tina Matheny.

He was preceded in death by his first love of 37 years, Sharolyn Roberts; one brother, Joe Roberts; and one sister-in-law, Lisa Roberts.

Services were held at White-Schwarzel Funeral Home, Coolville,Ohio, with Pastor John Longfellow officiating. Burial was in StewartCemetery, Hockingport, Ohio.

 

ERIN RICE WILE

Erin R. Rice Wile, 88, of Parkersburg, died Thursday, Dec. 15, 2016, at Eagle Pointe Nursing Home.

She was born in Stumptown, the daughter of the late Hollie and Goldie Stump Atwell.

She was a 1945 graduate of Parkersburg High School and retired from Hope Gas Co. She was a past member of Order of Eastern Star and member of New Hope Baptist Church.

She married W.Va. State Police Lt. Edgell E. Rice on Aug. 30, 1946. He died June 19, 1970. She married James R. Wile on Mar. 11, 1989. He resides with his daughter Judy in Webster Springs.

Surviving are one daughter, Sharon Jones of Morgantown; two sons, David E. Rice of Wilmington, N.C., and Michael J. Rice of Parkersburg; four grandchildren, Amy Jones Overfield of Morgantown, Christopher T. Jones of Wexford, Pa., Kristen K. Anthony of Raleigh, N.C., and Jonathon E. Rice of Parkersburg; and six great-grandchildren, Collin S., Lilly E. and Jack L. Overfield and Eliana I., Nathaniel C. and Joshua J. Jones.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Earl.

Carol Lee Valentine Goldsborough, 76, of Parkersburg, died Saturday, Dec. 17, 2016, at her home.

She was born in Calhoun County, the daughter of the late Frank and Etta Jane Mowrey Roberts.

She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Trinity U.M. Women, and Goodwill Sunday School class.

Surviving are her husband, Rick Goldsborough; one son, Jack Randall Valentine II of Vincent, Ohio; three daughters, Melody Ann Deitrich of New Martinsville, Pamela Sue Parker of Chester, Ohio, and Letha Hope Hoskinson of Belpre, Ohio; one step-daughter, Melisa Greene of Rocky Pointe, N.Y.; seven grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and three brothers, Jerry Roberts of Paden City, Ronald Roberts of Davisville and Steve Roberts of Long Bottom, Ohio.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Jack Valentine I; two sisters, Lelah Lawson and Arlene Byrd; step-mother, Bernice Roberts; two brothers, Brice Roberts and Willis Roberts; one grandchild; and one great-grandchild.

Services were held at Trinity United Methodist Church, with Rev. Michael Daniels and Rev. Jim Burdette officiating. Burial was in Sunset Memory Gardens.

 

JAMES ANDERSON

James E. Anderson of Grantsville died Monday, Oct. 31, 2016, from injuries sustained while working on his property.

He was the son of the late Opie and Elsie Harper Anderson.

Surviving are four children, John, Pamela, Carolyn and Joseph, and three grandchildren, Jesse, Maia and Suzanne.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Blankenship Anderson, in 1997.

Burial will be held in Maple Grove Cemetery, Elkins. He wished for a picnic to be scheduled in the Spring to celebrate his life.

JERRY RAY CUMMINGS

Jerry Ray Cummings, 73, of Gip, died Sunday, Dec. 18, 2016, at home.

He was born at Gip, the son of the late H. Ray and Clara “Katie” Kelly Cummings.

He was a U.S. Army veteran and a long distance truck driver and a construction worker.

Surviving are one daughter, Jennifer Toler; three grandchildren, Lindsey, Natalie and Shawn; one sister, Helen Mollohan of Servia; two brothers, Leon Cummings of Bridgeport and Keith Cummings of Martinsburg; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one brother-in-law, Larry Mollohan.

Grace Y. Richards, 89, of Grantsville, died Friday, Dec. 16, 2016.

She was the daughter of the late Elias and Ollie Kight Yoak.

She was a graduate of Calhoun County High School and Glenville State College. She was a retired teacher, having taught in WoodCounty. She was a member of Pleasant Hill United Methodist Churchand a member of the Calhoun County Library board for a number of years.

Surviving are one son, Stephen Richards and wife Twila; one daughter, Marcia Stanley and husband Dwain; three grandchildren, Stephanie Ayers and husband Jamie, Benjamin Stanley and wife Sabrina, and Jessica Fowler; seven great-grandchildren, Alexis, Kaylee, Emma, Lily, Landon, Austin and Steven; three sisters, Evadeen Kesler, Edna Robinson and Hazel Tingler and husband Ray; one brother, Robert Yoak; one brother-in-law, Hobert Richards and wife Alta Mae; three sisters-in-law, Leona Yoak, Madeline Yoak and Janet Richards; many nieces and nephews; and special niece, “Nurse Kaye.”

Clyde Edward Wright, Sr., 78, of Parkersburg, died Monday, Dec. 12, 2016, at Ohio Valley Healthcare.

He was born in Calhoun County, the son of the late Ruby Wright.

He moved to Parkersburg from Kentucky, where he trained race horses.

Surviving are one son, Clyde E. Wright, Jr., and wife Marsha; one aunt, Madeline Miller; and two granddaughters, Jetta and Jessi.

Thelma L. Parks, 88, of Parkersburg, died Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2016, at her residence.

She was born in Calhoun County, the daughter of the late Homer and Alta Walton Hiley.

She was retired from the former Mid-Atlantic Glass Co., Ellenboro, and had been a member of Harrisville Southside Baptist Church.

Surviving are two sons, Alan Parks of Vienna and David Parks and wife Carla of St. Marys; twin daughters, Charlene Bradford and fiance George Cole and Darlene Barnett, all of Parkersburg; six grandchildren, Darren Parks, Drew Parks, Christopher Hopkins, Ryan Hopkins, Kyle Bradford and Kara Schaad; and nine great-grandchildren, Addison and Desmond Parks, Lilly, Lindsay, Christian and Sophia Hopkins, Victoria, Kainan and Laylah Bradford.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Eugene D. Parks, in 2007; one brother, Kenneth Hiley; and three sisters, Alice McKinney, Margie Barnes and Gladys Nelson.

Graveside services were held at Ellenboro Masonic Cemetery, with Pastor Chad Mugrage officiating.

Elizabeth “Betty” Shearer Whipkey, 94, of Vienna, died Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2016, at her apartment in Pleasant View Towers.

She was born in Fayette County, the daughter of the late John and Ethel Hamrick Shearer of Clay.

She was a 52-year member of Grantsville Order of Eastern Star, Chapter #73, where she was a Past Worthy Matron.

Surviving are daughter, Mary Downs and husband William of Huntington; grandson, William Martin of Ashland, Oregon; great-grandchildren, Mary Elizabeth and William Thomas; grandson, Matthew Downs of Oshkosh; great-grandchildren, Joshua and Anna; son, Richard Whipkey III of Pittsburgh; granddaughters, Selena Whipkey and Jadyn Whipkey, both of St. Marys; grandson, James Whipkey of Browns Mill, N.J.; grandchildren, Travis and Rachel; grandson, Andrew Whipkey of Flushing, Mich.; grandchildren, Raleigh, Piper, Lucas and Anthony; granddaughter, Rebecca Shockey; grandchildren, Leah and Cooper; daughter, Neva Stuck and husband Brad of Fairmont; great-grandchildren, Derek, David, Hali and Hana; and two sisters-in-law, Carolyn Dotson Whipkey of Hebron, Ohio, and Hazel Reedy Shearer of Clay.

OMA OLLIDENE HALL

Oma Ollidene Hall, 84, of Arnoldsburg, died Friday, Dec. 9, 2016.

She was born at Hur, the daughter of the late Dewey Arlington Naylor and Elva Jane Slider Naylor.

She retired from Calhoun County Schools in 1994 after 25 years at Arnoldsburg Elementary School. She received the Outstanding Community Service Award in 1992 from West Fork Community Action for her many years of volunteer service. She served as Molasses Festival parade marshal in 1994.

Surviving are four sons, Michael James of Merritt Island, Fla., Larry Alan and Ricky Lee, both of Arnoldsburg, and Roger Dale of Mt.Zion; one daughter, Cathy Jane Bush of Jacksonville, Fla.; 12 grandchildren: Tammi Michelle Harrington of Middleburg, Fla., Jacqueline Suzanne Hazelip of Jacksonville, Kristina Kay Hall of Merritt Island, Matthew James Hall of Cocoa Beach, Fla., Jonathan Paul Hall of Elizabeth, Michelle Lee Fitzwater of Glenville, Ricky Lee Hall, Jr., and Stephanie Louise Hall, both of Arnoldsburg, and Casey Gray Hall, Jaron Dale Hall, Marlee Dene Hall and Coah Dane Hall, all of Mt. PAUL JUNIOR FUNK

Paul Junior Funk, 75, of Grantsville, died Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2016, at home.

He was born in Bruceton Mills, the son of the late Elsie Martin and Andrew Funk.

He was a member of the U.S. Army’s 82nd Airborne and was a member and deacon at Bethlehem Baptist Church. He coached T-ball and softball and was cubmaster for Cub Scout Pack 436.

Surviving are his wife of 49 years, Sandra K. Yeager Funk; one son, David Funk and wife Tricia; two daughters, Debbie Carbaugh and husband Rodney and Denise Davis and husband Jesse; seven grandchildren, Josh Funk and fiance Nicholle Weikert, Ashley Richards and husband Robert, Brandon Reed and girlfriend Tory Church, Brittiny Miller, Jeffrey Miller, Ethyn Miller and Kendra Davis; two great-grandchildren, Aubry Richards and Reagan Miller; and 11 siblings, Donihue Funk, Janet Freeman, Gary Williams, Larry Williams, Danny Cline and Darla Niner.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Ray Hersman, Billy Cline and Jerry Cline; two sisters, Helen Wiles and Dina Kay Harrison; and one great-granddaughter, Reece Richards.

Services will be held Friday, 1 p.m., at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville. Burial will be in Funk Family Cemetery, Normantown. Visitation will be held Thursday, 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.

RONZELL EUGENE CRADDOCK

Ronzell Eugene Craddock, 76, of Millstone, died Monday, Nov. 28, 2016, at home.

He was born at Altizer, the son of the late Forrest R. and Erma B. Wood Craddock.

He was a retired employee of Kaiser Aluminum, Ravenswood, and a U.S. Air Force veteran.

Surviving are one brother, Lew Craddock of Mt. Zion.

There was no visitation or service.

 

ARLEY LAYNE

Arley R. Layne, 72, of Sandridge, died Thursday, Dec. 1, 2016, at his residence.

He was born in Logan County, the son of the late Floyd Layne and Alice Lockhart Layne Skeens.

He was a miner and foreman in the coal industry for 28 years. He was a Christian and caregiver to his son, Randy.

Surviving are his wife, Peggy Cook Layne, whom he married on Jan. 29, 1965; two sons, Ricky Layne of Mt. Zion and Randy Layne of Normantown; one sister, Drema Parsons and husband Roy of Russell, Ky.; one brother, Walter Layne and wife Karen of Ashland, Ky.; two grandchildren, Robert Layne and wife Kayla and Arley Layne and wife Stephanie, all of Sissonville; two great-grandchildren, Devyn and Landyn Layne of Sissonville; three sisters-in-law, Nina Layne and Karen Layne, both of Dahlonega, Ga., and Patty Mangus of Mt. Zion; three half-sisters; one half-brother; two step-sisters; and numerous nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Jessie M. Layne and Hansel Layne, and one daughter-in-law, Shannon Layne.

Services were held at Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church, Stumptown, with Pastor Tim Underwood officiating. Burial was in Collins CommunityCemetery, Stumptown.

 

DONALD WHYTSELL

Donald F. Whytsell, 90, of Arnoldsburg, died Monday, Dec. 5, 2016, at his home.

He was born in Richardson, the son of the late Fred Whytsell, Sr., and Vena Riggs Whytsell.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War and retired from Western Reserve State Hospital.

Surviving are three sisters, Vera Madeline Wagoner, Lola “Tink” Moss and Barbara Church, all of Arnoldsburg; two brothers, Frank Whytsell and Ben Whytsell, both of Arnoldsburg; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Martha Rader Whytsell; four brothers, Fred “Joe,” Ray, George and Richard; and three sisters, Juanita Batten, Imogene Whytsell and Laverne Whytsell.

Services were scheduled Wednesday, 1 p.m., at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home, Spencer, with Rev. Rick Metheney officiating, and burial in Eventide Cemetery, Spencer. Visitation was scheduled Wednesday, noon to 1 p.m., at the funeral home.

 

WILMA McCARTNEY CAPPS

Wilma McCartney Capps, 87, died Sunday, Nov. 20, at Brookside Nursing Home, Warrenton, Va.

She was born in Tanner, the daughter of the late French G. McCartney and Louella Haney McCartney Williams.

After graduating from Tanner High School, she moved to Michigan, where she met her husband and worked in various office positions. After retiring, she moved back to Tanner and worked at Country Life Natural Foods, Glenville.

Surviving are one daughter, Judy Chudd of Culpeper, Va.; one brother, French G. McCartney, Jr., and wife Iris of Walker; three grandchildren, Erica Hutchinson and husband Bill, Jeffrey Chudd and Ryan Chudd and wife Haley; and two great-grandchildren, Garrett Hutchinson and Mia Hutchinson.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Noble E. Capps, and three brothers, James McCartney, Willard “Pud” McCartney and William Bradley McCartney.

RONALD CLAY MILLER

Ronald Clay Miller, 83, of Glenville, died Monday, Dec. 5, 2016, at Glenville Health Care Center.

He was born in Gilmer County, the son of the late Ola and Cora Zinn Miller.

He was a caretaker for the Glenville State College farm, and worked several odd jobs. He was a Christian.

Surviving are one daughter, Elizabeth Justice of Arnoldsburg; one son, Walter Miller of Arnoldsburg; five grandchildren, Rose Freeman and husband Scott of Burnsville, Travis Justice of Burnsville, Carl Justice of Arnoldsburg, Timothy Hicks and wife Jadale of North Dakota, and Tyler Hicks of Parkersburg; nine great-grandchildren, Sean, Zachary, Taylor and Scotty Freeman of Burnsville, Jadelynn, Carley and Trenton Hicks of North Dakota and Zach and Brooklyn Collins of Arnoldsburg; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Ruby Miller, on Feb. 21, 2015; one son, Vernon G. Miller one grandson, Larry Brooks Justice; and two sisters, Dorothy Minnich and Frances Spatted.

MICKEY LEE NICHOLAS II

Mickey Lee Nicholas II, 30, of Valdese, N.C., died Thursday, Nov. 10, 2016.

He was the son of Mickey Lee and Kelly Simmons Nicholas.

Surviving in addition to his parents are one sister, Monic Nicholas; five children, Dezirae, Brendon, Nastasha, Nadiya and Mischa; one niece; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by grandparents, Bill and Garnet Simmons and Thurl and Ella Nicholas, and one brother, Kenneth Nicholas.

Private family service was held at Nicholas/Simmons Cemetery, Shock.

 

EDSEL MOSS

Edsel D. Moss, 89, died Sunday, Nov. 20, 2016.

He was born in Moss (Stewart’s Creek), the son of Jennings B. Moss and Gertrude Hite Moss.

He won a Golden Horseshoe in eighth grade and was a 1945 graduate of Sand Fork High School. He was a drill instructor in the U.S. Army and stationed at Ft. Belvoir, Md. He graduated from Glenville State College and attended West Virginia University. He began teaching in a one-room school house in Rosedale. In 1952, he moved his family to the Cleveland area, where his brother Jenningstaught him the tool and die trade, and he retired from Caterpillar, Mentor, Ohio, in 1985 as quality assurance manager in the metallurgy lab. He was a member of American Legion and lifetime member of Elks.

Surviving are two daughters, Marjorie Wright of Fairbury, Ill., and Doris Moss of Concord Township, Ohio; one son, Ed D. Moss of Bedford, Tex.; two brothers Joseph Moss of Elyria, Ohio, and Earl Richard “Dick” Moss of Mentor; eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Erma Lee Moss.

Celebration of life was held at Brunner Sanden Deitrick Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Mentor, Ohio.

Rick E. Thomas, 56, of Millstone, died Friday, Nov. 18, 2016.

He was born in Antioch, Ohio, the son of the late Charles and Kathleen Marks Thomas.

He was a cabinet maker.

Surviving are his wife of 38 years, Katheran Conley Thomas; three daughters, Tina Gregory of Hockley, Tex., Jenny Helmick of Shock and Cristy Ash of Spencer; three sisters, Betty Jo Boothe of Grantsville, Jeannie Starcher of Speedwell, Tenn., and Charlotte Horn of Russell, Ky.; two brothers, Allen Thomas of Sandridge and Edward Thomas of Leesburg, Fla.; four granddaughters; three grandsons; and two uncles.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, William Thomas and Chucky Thomas III; two sisters, Sandy Ferrebee and Peggy Broduer, and one brother-in-law, Denzil Boothe.

Rick was cremated, as were his wishes. The family will have a private memorial service.

 

WILLIAM RICHARD (Bill) DILLON

William Richard (Bill) Dillon, 78, of Arnoldsburg, died Monday, Nov. 21, 2016.

He was born in Calhoun County, the son of the late Orville and Erma Lee Chafin Dillon.

He was a 1956 graduate of Calhoun County High school and a U.S. Army veteran. While assigned to military duty in the United Kingdom, he married the former Judith Ann Hazell. After service, he worked as a team supervisor for Ohio Edison.

Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Judith; two daughters, Terry Luzader and Carmen Wilhite; one sister, Sue Ann Steel; four grandchildren, Blake, Arieile, Allyson and Trey; and one great-grandson, Landon.

He was preceded in death by one son, William Richard (Billy) Dillon, Jr.

Private gathering of family and friends will occur at a later date.

Jeremy Allen Knicely, 24, of Gay, died Monday, Nov. 21.

He was born in Meadsville, Pa., the son of Guy Knicely and Melissa Johnson.

Hazel Virginia Taylor Somerville, 94, of Grantsville, died Friday, Nov. 25, 2016.

She was the daughter of the late William Henry and Rhoda Saunders Taylor.

Surviving are one son, James Somerville of Grantsville; three grandchildren, Timothy and Alisa Somerville of Palestine and Richard Somerville of Ellenboro; four great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Franklin Hayes Somerville; one daughter, Rhoda Morris; three brothers; and two sisters.

Mickey Lee Nicholas II, 30, of Valdese, N.C., died Thursday, Nov. 10, 2016.

He was the son of Mickey Lee and Kelly Simmons Nicholas.

Surviving in addition to his parents are one sister, Monic Nicholas; five children, Dezirae, Brendon, Nastasha, Nadiya and Mischa; one niece; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by grandparents, Bill and Garnet Simmons and Thurl and Ella Nicholas, and one brother, Kenneth Nicholas.

Private family service was held at Nicholas/Simmons Cemetery, Shock.

EDSEL MOSS

Edsel D. Moss, 89, died Sunday, Nov. 20, 2016.

He was born in Moss (Stewart’s Creek), the son of Jennings B. Moss and Gertrude Hite Moss.

He won a Golden Horseshoe in eighth grade and was a 1945 graduate of Sand Fork High School. He was a drill instructor in the U.S. Army and stationed at Ft. Belvoir, Md. He graduated from Glenville State College and attended West Virginia University. He began teaching in a one-room school house in Rosedale. In 1952, he moved his family to the Cleveland area, where his brother Jennings taught him the tool and die trade, and he retired from Caterpillar, Mentor, Ohio, in 1985 as quality assurance manager in the metallurgy lab. He was a member of American Legion and lifetime member of Elks.

Surviving are two daughters, Marjorie Wright of Fairbury, Ill., and Doris Moss of Concord Township, Ohio; one son, Ed D. Moss of Bedford, Tex.; two brothers Joseph Moss of Elyria, Ohio, and Earl Richard “Dick” Moss of Mentor; eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Erma Lee Moss.

Glenn Kermit Busch, 82, of Parkersburg, died Tuesday, Nov. 15, 2016, at Camden Clark Medical Center, Parkersburg.

He was born in Big Bend, the son of the late Ray Maxwell and Theresa Lynch Busch.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and became a certified welder in Troy, Ohio. He retired after 29 years at Busch Crane Rental. He attended Landmark Baptist Church, where he served as deacon for approximately five years and was head usher.

Surviving are his wife, Barbara Ann Reed, whom he married on June 7, 1959; one daughter, Serina Jones; one son, Kevin Busch; three grandchildren, Jeremy Busch, Stephen Maher and Kevin Busch; one great-grandchild, Isabella Busch; one brother-in-law, Carroll Slider; and one sister-in-law, Martha Busch.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Leah Katherine Slider, and one brother, Donald Busch.

Services were held at Landmark Baptist Church, 310 8th Ave., Parkersburg, with Pastor Lamb officiating. Burial was in Sunset Memory Gardens.

CHRISTOPHER RYAN MACE

Christopher Ryan Mace, 26, of Arnoldsburg, died Saturday, Nov. 5, 2016.

He was the son of Jeffrey and Shelly Mace and was a 2009 graduate of Calhoun County High School.

For the past seven years, he worked in the pipeline industry. His most recent employer was CKS Pipeline, Jane Lew.

Surviving in addition to his parents are his brother, Evan Mace; maternal grandmother, Janice “Susie” Brannon; his great-grandfather, Don Cottrill; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Oral McKee “Hoke” Mace and Marjorie Ernestine “Toots” Hoskins Mace; maternal grandfathers, Vere Brannon and Chester Hall; and maternal great-grandmother, Lenora Faye Goodrich Cottrill.

Services were held at Louisa Chapel United Methodist Church, with Rev. Rick Metheney officiating. Burial was in Mace FamilyCemetery, Millstone.

Betty Frances Cooper, 64, of Parkersburg, died Saturday, Nov. 12, 2016, at Eagle Pointe Nursing Facility.

She was born in Wood County, the daughter of the late Gilead Wilmer and Iona Virginia Wilson Gault. She was a Baptist.

Surviving are one daughter, Lisa Massie of Graysville, Ohio; two sons, Delbert Cooper, Jr., of Parkersburg and Dwayne Cooper of Moundsville; one sister, Linda Snider of Big Springs; 18 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Gilead Wilmer Gault, Jr.

GENE STUMP

Gene Stump, 90, of Parkersburg, died Friday, Nov. 4, 2016, at CAMC, Charleston.

He was born at Grantsville, the oldest son of the late Dallas and Daisy Stump.

He was double promoted in high school and graduated in 1942 at the age of 16. He joined the Navy when he was 18 and served in World War II. He commissioned the USS Kingsbury, along with decommissioning it, before being honorably discharged. He was a machinist for 40 years at Johns Manville. He served on the board of directors for the state AFL-CIO for 32 years, past fire commissioner for Parkersburg, served 28 years on the board of directors for W.Va. League Central Credit Union, managed Blennerhassett Federal Credit Union, Camden Clark hospital board, served on State Personnel Board, served as Quarter Master for 28 years for Vienna VFW Post 8127, was serving on the Democratic Executive Committee of Wood County, served on the Board of Directors for Blue Cross/Blue Shield, and served as treasurer for Central Ohio Valley Union Council.

Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Cathy; four children, Ellen and Jim Eaton of Carolina Beach, N.C., Bill and Kathy Stump of Hendersonville, Ky., Tonda and Bill Roach of Carolina Beach, N.C., and Cherie and Larry Lane of Richmond, Va.; and six grandchildren, Hayley and Devin Lane, D.J. and Dustin Wolfe and Hannah and Zeth Stump.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Darrell Stump, and one sister, Helen Perry.

Services were held at Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, Vienna, with Father John Gallagher and Rev. Don Yeager officiating. Burial was in Parkersburg Memorial Gardens, where military graveside rites were conducted by American Legion Post 15.

 

ERNEST CHARLES CRAWFORD

Ernest Charles Crawford, 69, of Parkersburg, died Saturday, Nov. 5, 2016, at Camden Clark Medical Center.

He was the son of the late Ernest and Gracie Pearl Harden Crawford.

He attended Davisville Community Chapel as often as he could.

Surviving are his nieces, Nadene Ruble and Sherry Kellar; great-nephews and nieces, Larry Ruble, Delta Barr, Carrie Richmond, Charlie Carver, Rebecca Poling, Robert Donahue and Nicholas Donahue and their families.

He was preceded in death by his step-mother, Olive Stevens Crawford, and three sisters, Eloise Shrader, Elodene Batten Kellar and Phyllis Stevens.

DONALD BURL KELLEY

Donald Burl Kelley, 91, of Grantsville, died Friday, Oct. 28, at Marietta Memorial Hospital.

He was born at White Pine, the son of the late Francis and Mary Della Grimm Kelley.

He was the youngest of eight brothers and sisters. He served in the U.S. Army in World War II under General Patton’s 3rd Battalion and saw combat at the Battle of the Bulge. He graduated from MountainState Business College and pursued a life-long career in banking at Calhoun County Bank, Grantsville. One of the highlights of his life was his recent experience with the Honor Flight Organization. He was able to travel with other veterans to Washington, D.C., to visit the memorials and be honored for his service to his country. He was a long-time member of the Church of God.

Surviving are his wife of 66 years, Willa Lea Kelley; one daughter, Kathy Kerby of Grantsville; one son, Ron Kelley of Mocksville, N.C.; four grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one sister, Jean Yoak Miller; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by six siblings, Virgil, Carolina Barr, Gladys Whipkey, Blenden, Genevieve Ward and Geraldine Kelley.

Graveside service was held at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, with John Havir officiating.

 

JUDY ANN MEMMER

Judy Ann Memmer, 67, of Randolph, Ohio, died Friday, Oct. 28, 2016.

She was born in Nicut, the daughter of the late Rufus and Dora McCumbers King.

Surviving are her husband, Daniel Memmer, Sr., whom she married on Apr. 30, 1996; two daughters, Kimberly Jason and Lisa Adelman; two sons, William “Bill” Ice and Daniel Memmer, Jr.; four grandchildren, Brandy Hart, Shelby Hann, Hunter Adelman and Mary Lutton; one great-grandson, Nickolas Johnson; two brothers, Stanley King and David King; and four sisters, Virginia Davis, Wilma Turner, Wanda Morgan and Louise Knotts.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, Lucille King, Marla King and Bernice Arnold; one brother, Paul King; and one grandson, Nicholas Hart.

He was born at Leatherbark, the son of the late Forest and Edna Nichols Houchin.

He was a U.S. Army veteran and served in Korea. He founded Houchin Construction and Houchin Rental & Sales and was the owner of Houchin Fabric Shop. He worked for several pipeline contractors before starting his own business.

Mabyn Schartiger Deweese, 94, of Orma, died Monday, Oct. 24, 2016, at Minnie Hamilton Health System.

She was born at Minnora, the daughter of the late Russell and Ida Hamrick Schartiger.

Surviving are four sons, Clarence Deweese of Orma, Rick Deweese of Huntington, Ron Deweese of Minnora and David Deweese of Arnoldsburg; five daughters, Berdeal Conley of Morgantown, Arlena Jarvis of Orma, Judy Tucker of Parkersburg, Joyce Sue Blauvelt of Ft. Myers, Fla., and Jill Metz of Orma; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

She was the last surviving child.

Paul F. Samples, 74, of Nebo, died Thursday, Oct. 13, 2016.

He was the son of the late Enos and Hazel Davis Samples and was a 1960 graduate of Clay County High School.

After graduating, he moved to Buffalo, N.Y., and worked as a machine operator for Dunlap Tire and Rubber Co., where he retired after 28 years. Paul and his wife returned to Clay County in 1995, where he got involved in raising Rocky Mountain horses. He was a member of Risen Lord Catholic Church, Maysel.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, Carlos, Norman, Zane and Joseph Samples, and four sisters, Madaline Nutter, Kathleen Duesenberry, Agnes Stone and Dessie Marie Shamblin.

\Wesley Bernell Nicholas, 74, of Orma, died October 14, 2016, at University of Virginia Medical Center, Charlottesville, Va.

He was born in Orma, the son of the late Warren and Delphia Riffle Nicholas.

He had been a manager of NAPA, Spencer, for 45 years and several years at Willard C. Starcher.

Surviving are one son, John Nicholas of Newport News, Va.; one daughter, Lisa Church of Arnoldsburg; one sister, Esther Wilson of Grantsville; one brother, Vance Nicholas of Orrville, Ohio; six grandchildren, Kelsea Lynch, Wesley Nicholas, Logan Cain, Marah Myers, Samantha Norman and Kayla Church; three great-grandchildren, Payten Cain, Zaelyn Cain and Avery Norman; and several nieces and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 44 years, Barbara, and two brothers, Robert and Darrell.

Ralph Paul Bunner, 78, of Brohard, died Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2016.

He was born at his family home in Brohard, the son of John D. and Magdelene Haney Bunner.

He attended Hartley School, but left at a young age to work teams of horses plowing and logging for neighbors to help provide for his family. He married Gertrude Lorraine Cain on Oct. 26, 1963. He started his career at Singer Sheet Metal and later worked for Murrays Sheet Metal, Danser, and Tri-State. He retired from Local Union 33. He was a deacon and trustee at Strait Creek Baptist Church and caretaker of Hartley and Wolverton cemeteries.

Surviving are five children, Shelly Murphy, Angie Dorsey and Kim Richards, all of Brohard, Paul Bunner of Elizabeth and Shawna Bunner of Waverly; 10 grandchildren, Anyka, Zeb, and Sam Dorsey, Hannah and Kalleigh Richards, Wyatt Bunner, Dillon and Gavin Goodnight, Gabrielle Gorby and Mahala Metheney; four great-granddaughters, Jasmine, Olivia and Chloe Starcher and Joselynn Murphy; two sisters, Florence Haute and Mary Barton; one brother, Howard Bunner; in-laws, Patricia Groves, Earlene Toney, Marilynn Bunner and Johnny Cain.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Lorraine; in-laws, Ollie and Eris Cain; one sister, Opal Lewinberger; one brother, Delbert Bunner; and four brothers-in-law, Smith Groves, John Lewinberger, Dick Haut and Jimmy Cain.

Thomas R. Hathaway, 76, of Vienna, died Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2016, at Camden Clark Memorial Campus.

He was born in Millstone, the son of the late Homer and Catherine Cunningham Hathaway.

He was a 1958 graduate of Parkersburg High School and attended West Liberty University. He started in the auto business with Superior Motor and was owner of Superior Toyota/Hyundai. He was a NADA Ambassador of Distinction and a member of W.Va. Auto Dealers Association, Fellowship Baptist Church, Masonic Lodge 172 and Shriners, and had received his 50-year pin.

Surviving are his wife of 57 years, B.J. Hathaway; one son, T.R. Hathaway; twin sister, Janet Snook; six grandchildren, Sarah and Tommy Hathaway and Paige, Kennedy, Reagan and Carter Hathaway; and five nieces and nephews, Debbie Rogers, Greg Kelly, Karie Sargent, Casey Miracle and Kim Trimble.

He was preceded in death by one son, Harold “Scott” Hathaway, and one sister-in-law, Pat Kelly.

Charles Duskey, Jr., 96, of Grantsville, died Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2016, at Minnie Hamilton Health System.

He was born in Fairmont, the son of the late Charles and Elva Connolly Duskey.

After living at Parkersburg, the West Fork and Akron, Ohio, Charlie, age 10, and his family returned to Mt. Zion, where he attended a one-room school. He was a 1940 graduate of Calhoun County High School. He married Eleanor “Dink” Riddle on Oct. 4, 1941, and graduated from Mountain State Business College. He was a veteran of the Third Army and worked at Calhoun Super Service, Grantsville, for 37 years.

Surviving are one daughter, Dixie Dee Brown; one granddaughter, Deanna Lynn Brown; one grandson, Charles William Brown; one great-granddaughter, Paige Katherine Shaver; one great-grandson, Alexander Charles Shaver; and two brothers, Donald G. Duskey of Texarkana, Tex., and Ronald D. Duskey of Rotonda, Fla.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Eleanor Riddle Duskey; an infant son, Charles Duskey III; and two brothers, John Duskey and Harold Duskey.

She was born in Stumptown, the oldest of five children of the late Harley F. and Thelma Godfrey Siers.

She was a 1953 graduate of Calhoun County High School and majored in biology at Glenville State College. She worked in Charleston and in Ohio before moving home in 1959, where she and her husband owned and operated Sears Exxon Service Center for nearly 58 years.

Ralph E. Givens, 81, of Williamstown, died Friday, Sept. 17, 2016, at Marietta Memorial Hospital.

He was born in Grantsville, the son of the late Charley Givens and Esta Richards Givens.

He was a United Steel Worker and retired after 35 years of service at Kardex. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Williamstown.

Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Phyllis Jean Steele Givens; two sons, Jeffrey Mark Givens of Williamstown and Jonathan Darin Givens of Vienna; three sisters, Joann Porter of Bristol, Tenn., Margaret Fleming of Grantsville and Donna Sams of Parkersburg; two brothers, Charles Givens of Walker and Roger Givens of Grantsville; two grandchildren, Stephanie Frye and Matt Cain; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Verl Edward Duley, Sr., 74, of Parkersburg, died Sunday, Sept. 18, at his residence.

He was born in Calhoun County, the son of the late Luther and Virginia Brown Duley.

He worked at Tebay Dairy Farm, Gihon Golf, Cloverdale Meat Packing and did odd jobs. He retired from Wetz. He was a member of Pleasant View Baptist Church.

James Roy Kessler, 67, and Zelda Jane Kessler, 68, of Hansford, died Sunday, Sept. 18, 2016, due to an automobile accident.

He was born in Montgomery, the son of the late Roy B. and Elsie Brown Kessler. He was a welder for most of his life and was a life-long church member, gospel singer and songwriter with the Fishermen Quartet.

She was born in Grantsville, the daughter of the late Ray and Evelyn Roberts Sampson. She worked at Revlon for 18 years in the warehouse as a quality control inspector and was a life-long church member and gospel singer.

They were married on Apr. 29, 1989, in Summersville.

Surviving are one son, Donald Frost of Wadsworth, Ohio; one daughter, Hollie Ott of Louisburg, N.C.; five grandchildren, Byron Joyner, Brandon Frost, Ryan Frost, Shane Ott and Payton Ott; his siblings, Larry Kessler, Joe Kessler, George Kessler, Pat Hambrick, Sue Kincaid and Kathy Thomas; and her siblings, Merle Sampson and Monna Rice.

They were preceded in death by several brothers and sisters.

Pauline Virginia Gainer, 92, died Thursday, Sept. 8, 2016, at The Heritage, St. Marys.

She was born in Calhoun County, near Grantsville, the daughter of the late Judson and Naomi Riddle.

She was a 1942 graduate of Calhoun County High School. She worked as a nurse’s aide at Calhoun General Hospital and as a secretary at Normantown High School and Glenville State College. She also served as secretary of Pleasants County Senior Citizens for several years. She had attended Rush Run Baptist Church,Normantown Methodist Church, Mount Pisgah Baptist Church, Stumptown, and First Baptist Church, St. Marys. She taught youth Sunday School classes for many years.

Surviving are three sons, Larry of St. Marys and Gary and Terry, both of Weston; five grandchildren, Lance Gainer of Washington, Shawn Gainer of Cumberland, Md., Christopher Gainer of Buckhannon, Jennifer Stewart of Clarksburg and Matthew David Gainer of Charlotte, N.C.; and several great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by six siblings, Alpha Riddle, Geneva Conrad, Stella Reed, Augusta Riddle, Arden Riddle and twin brother Paul Virgil Riddle.

She was born in Stinson, the daughter of the late Russell and Bernice Moss Mollohan.

Dorothy Jeanne Wilson, 91, of Grantsville, died Sunday, Sept. 11, 2016, at Minnie Hamilton Health System.

She was born in Charleston, the daughter of the late Frank Strange Johnson and Edythe Verna Cochran Johnson.

She was an educator and writer. She started her career at a one-room school in Nicholas County and was a principal in Lewis County. She gave thousands of hours to scouting, 4-H and various church programs and as a foster parent.

Surviving are her husband of 66 years, Harold “Kitty” Wilson; one son, Michael A. Wilson; one daughter, Barbara Wilson Lay; one, foster daughter, W. Kay Deem; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; six step-great-grandchildren; one foster grandson; and two foster great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Janet Verne Johnson George and Ann Joan Johnson Burdick, and an infant brother.

Julia Ellen Nichols Bowe, 49, of Nitro, died Tuesday, Sept. 13, 2016, at Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston.

She was born in Grantsville, the daughter of the late Milford K. and Mary Dodrill Nichols.

She attended schools in Clay County and was a 1984 graduate of Calhoun County High School and attended Glenville State College. She attended Community Chapel Church, Cross Lanes.

Surviving are one son, Justin Bowe and wife Lynsey of Teays Valley; one daughter, Jessica Bowe of Nitro; special family friend, David Thompson of South Charleston; one brother, Newton Nichols of Grantsville; and one sister, Mary Riffle of Charleston.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Kelles and Beulah Nichols and William S. and Elizabeth Dodrill, all of Clay.

Herbert Clarence (Chuck) Smith, Jr., 73, of Parkersburg, died Wednesday, Aug, 31, 2016.

He was born in Baltimore, Md., the son of the late Herbert and Edith Stump Smith, Sr. He was raised in Grantsville and previously worked at Borg-Warner. He was retired from Chuck’s Truck Garage and was a member of 14th Avenue Gospel Mission Church.

Surviving are his wife of 32 years, Barbara Lindley Smith; two daughters, Stacey Wright and Marcie Smith; two step-children, Susan Akers and Dr. John Mason; two granddaughters, Breahna and Sierra Wright; eight step-grandchildren, Lindsay, Leslie, Ben, Kurt, William, Nicholas, Jack and Kepley Ann; two brothers, Allen and Keith; two sisters, Carol Lewis and Nell Smith; and special friends, Rex Curry and John Somerville.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Lewis Smith, and one sister, Judith Swisher.

Per Chuck’s wishes, there will be no service or visitation, as he donated his body to West Virginia University Human Gift Registry. A memorial service may be held at a later date.

 

CECIL LEON RAMSEY

Cecil Leon Ramsey, 87, of Glenville, died Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2016.

He was born in Beckham County, Okla., the son of the late John F. and Ethel P. Ramsey.

As a teenager, he worked on farms in Oklahoma and California. As an adult, he was a stand-in for actor Audie Murphy, worked in canneries, farmed, owned two marinas, ranched and was an oil field worker.

Surviving are three sons, Warren Ramsey of Ft. Gibson, Okla., and Van Ramsey and Leon Ramsey, both of Glenville; one daughter, Wanda Ramsey of Prague, Okla.; 12 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Sonja, and all 11 of his siblings.

Services will be held Tuesday, Sept. 6, 1 p.m., at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Pastor Bryan Groves officiating. Burial will be in Good Shepherd Cemetery. Visitation will be held Tuesday, noon to 1 p.m., at the funeral home.

 

FRANCIS EUGENE RINEHART

Francis Eugene Rinehart, 70, of Mt. Zion, died Friday, Sept. 2, 2016, at his home.

He was born in Middleburg, Md., the son of the late Monroe and Grace Wisnor.

He resided in Walkersville, Md., for 24 years and was known as Carl. He had worked at R.K.S. Construction and retired from Essroc Cement Corp., Frederick, Md.

Surviving are his wife of 44 years, Penny D. Rinehart; one daughter, Wendy (Vince) Kepphart of Virginia; one son, Gary Rinehart of Maryland; one brother, Dennis (Jean) Rinehart of Taneytown, Md.; five grandchildren, Ashley of West Virginia, Curtis and Cheyenne, both of Virginia, Taylor Rinehart of Pennsylvania and Destiney Rinehart; and one great-grandson, Christian.

He was preceded in death by two sons, Frank and Hank; one grandson, Ed; one great-granddaughter, Darlene; one sister, Shirley Fogle; and one brother, Kenneth Rinehart.

Milford Lewis Yoak, 83, of Auburn, died Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2016, at Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown.

He was born at Norman Ridge, the son of the late Alva Albert and Beatrice Thelma Richards Yoak.

He served in the U.S. Army in Korea and worked as an oilfield driller for Sure Energy. He was a member of the former Norman Ridge Church.

Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Betty Jones Yoak; two sons, Curtis Lee Yoak (Cheryl) of Mannington and Nicholas Ray Yoak (Janice) of Sand Fork; one daughter, Elizabeth Ann Osborne (Ronald) of Auburn; and four grandchildren, Christopher Osborne, Tyler Yoak, LaTrisha Moore and Dakota Yoak.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, John William Yoak, Kenneth Lee Yoak and Cletus Yoak, and one sister, Eleanor Dell Yoak.

Marjorie Ann Johnson Kimble, 80, of Parkersburg, died Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2016, at Camden Clark Medical Center.

She was a long-time member of Parkersburg Baptist Temple.

Surviving are her husband of 35 years, Earl Vanosse; one step-daughter, Carol Williams of Texas; one nephew, Jeff Wilson; and one niece, Jacqueline Gilmore.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Robert Wilson, and one sister, Stella Hall.

Thelma Arlene Davis, 83, of Chloe, died Monday, Aug. 29, 2016, at Hubbard House Hospice, Charleston.

She was born in Harrisburg, Pa., the daughter of the late Llewellyn and Ruth Kerr Mills.

She was a former Marine. She retired from Camden County Board of Welfare in New Jersey.

Surviving are one daughter, Mary Ellen Ecret; eight grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by 15 brothers and sisters; husbands, Willfred Allen Quick and Martin Davis; one son, Willfred Allen Quick, Jr.; one grandson, Kiya; and one granddaughter, Ruth.

Melba Jeannette Burrows Wright, 74, of Belpre, died Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2016, at her home.

She was born in Grantsville, the daughter of the late Clifford R. and Ruth Maloney Burrows.

She worked at Walker Systems for over 37 years and was a member of Porterfield Baptist Church, where she helped with BAM.

Surviving are one son, Clyde Wright, Jr.; three granddaughters, Jetta and Jessi Wright and Vanessa Hickman; one great-grandson, Jonathan Hickman; one sister, Jeannie Burrows Winans; one brother, Edward Burrows; four nephews, Adam Winans, Donnie Parks, Derrick Burrows and Carl Burrows, Jr.; four nieces, Carrie, Nicky, Jennifer and Cindy; and one great-niece, Ryder.

Glenna Queen, 107, of Grantsville, formerly of Glenville, died Sunday, Aug. 21, 2016, at Minnie Hamilton Health System.

She was born in Cox’s Mills, the daughter of the late James and Lottie White Butcher.

She retired from the Social Security Administration, Baltimore, Md. She volunteered her time at Gilmer County Historical Society and Gilmer County Public Library.

Surviving are a host of nieces and nephews. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell F. Queen; three brothers, Steve Butcher, Willard Butcher and John Butcher; and two sisters, Lottie Wiseman and Mary Roberts.

Robert E. Hood, 78, of Walton, died Friday, Aug. 19, 2016, at Miletree Center, Spencer.

He was born in Ansted, the son of the late William W. Hood, Sr., and Ocie Irene Bays Hood.

He was retired from the United States Navy, where he had served as a boatman. He had also worked as an auto mechanic.

Surviving are his wife, Hazel J. Hood of Walton; one son, Robert E. Hood, Jr., of Unionville, Tenn.; and three step-daughters, Cheryl Rotondi of Charleston, Sherry Starcher of Walton and Christina Starcher of Gandeeville.

He was preceded in death by one brother, William W. Hood, Jr., and one step-son, Gary Starcher.

Douglas Joe Blair, 81, of Port Hueneme, Calif., died Friday, Aug. 19, 2016, at home.

He was born in Big Springs, the son of the late Dorsie and Pearl Blair.

He was a 1952 graduate of Calhoun County High School and attended West Virginia University. He was a Vietnam veteran and served in the U.S. Navy for 26 years, retiring as Master Chief in December 1979. He worked for Vitro Corp. for 15 years, retiring in 1995.

Surviving are two daughters, Barbara Obermeier of Ventura, Calif., and Kathy Guzman of Stafford, Va.; one sister, Ruth Reeves of Virginia Beach, Va.; and four grandchildren, Chris Blair, Katie Holloway, Kylie Obermeier and Mason Miller.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 39 years, Fumiko Blair, and one sister, Jean Duffy of Pittsburgh, Pa.

Services will be held Friday, 10 a.m., in the chapel at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park and Funeral Home, Ventura.

Georgia B. Vannoy, 76, died Sunday, Aug. 14, 2016, after a brief illness.

She was the daughter of the late Frank and Lizzie Campbell of Sand Ridge.

She was employed by Kellwood Co., Spencer, for over 30 years and retired from the dietary department at Roane General Hospital in 2006. She was a member of Reedy Lions Club and was a Baptist.

Surviving are her husband, Frank L. Vannoy of Reedy; two daughters, Carolyn Burdette of Charleston and Donna Greathouse of Spencer; one son, Paul Vannoy of Reedy; seven grandchildren, Marshall, Brandon and Nathan Burdette, Jessica Vannoy Myers, and Benjamin, Elizabeth and Jacob Greathouse; six great-grandchildren; one sister, Ruth Cook; and one brother, David Campbell.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Oleta Campbell Smith and husband Dennis.

George Emmett Johnson, 64, of Grantsville, died Sunday, Aug. 14, 2016, at home.

He was the son of Pearle Johnson of Grantsville and the late Emmett Johnson.

He was a graduate of Calhoun County High School and Glenville State College, with a degree in business administration. He was employed in his family’s tire retreading business for many years, and later owned and operated Johnson Tire Center, Grantsville, prior to his retirement.

Surviving in addition to his mother are his wife of 42 years, Robyn Moss Johnson; one son, Andrew Johnson of Grantsville; one daughter, Amanda Johnson Eastham and husband Jeff of Fairfield, Ohio; three grandchildren, Macy Eastham, Gavin Eastham and Kinley Eastham, all of Fairfield; and two brothers, James Johnson and wife Martha of Grantsville and Rex Johnson of Parkersburg.

He was preceded in death by an infant brother.

Dennis “Denny” Lee Cottrill, Jr., 33, of Braxton County, died Saturday, Aug. 13, 2016, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

He was born in Beckley, the son of Dennis Lee Cottrill, Sr., and Lisa D’Ann Cooper.

He was a 2001 graduate of Calhoun County High School, where he was a member of the football and wrestling teams. He was a directional driller for Nomac Drilling.

Surviving in addition to his father and mother are two daughters, Cameron Leann Cottrill and Caylee June Cottrill; the mother of his children, Amber Cottrill; step-mother Shelley Cottrill; one sister, Erica Cottrill; one brother, Tyler Cottrill; paternal grandfather, Don Cottrill; maternal grandparents, Tom and Helen Cooper; and two nephews, Landon and Jonah.

He was preceded in death by paternal grandmother, Lenora Faye Cottrill, and one uncle, Basil “Bud” Cooper.

Sandra Lee “Sandy” Rowell, 77, of Williamstown, died Monday, Aug. 1, 2016, at home.

She was born at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital, Parkersburg, the daughter of the late Kenneth Stump and Wilma Hardman Stump.

She grew up in Grantsville, sharing a home with her mother, sister Rosemary, grandparents Gona and Ova Hinzman Hardman and uncle, James Hardman. She was a 1957 graduate of Calhoun CountyHigh School and 1962 graduate of Glenville State College. She taught at Parkersburg Catholic, Lawrence, Frontier, and Waterford high schools. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Williamstown.

Surviving are her husband of 55 years, Thomas Daniel Rowell; two daughters, Amber R. Smart of Agoura Hills, Calif., and Laurie A. Allington of Tampa, Fla.; one son, Daniel B. Rowell of Laurel, Md.; one sister, Rosemary Sherwood of Tulare, Calif.; 10 grandchildren, Qiufei and Axel Smart, Jessica Kessler, Seth, Sam, Emily and Jackie Rowell and John, Lukas and Sarah Allington; one nephew, Stephen Norman of Orrville, Calif.; one niece, Kelly Yeager of Tulare, Calif.; and two cousins, Harold Barr Proudfoot of Brookfield Center, Pa., and Harriet Proudfoot McCoy of Parkland, Fla.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Kenneth Stump in 1941, Wilma Stump in 1988; and in-laws, Dan Rowell in 1969 and Bertha Rowell in 2009.

Timothy Wayne Whipkey, 51, of Five Forks, died Tuesday, Aug. 2, 2016.

He was the son of the late Brady and Edith Ritchie Whipkey of Five Forks and was a member of Victory Baptist Church.

James Edward Ball, 65, of Big Springs, died Saturday, Aug. 6, 2016, at Camden Clark Medical Center, Parkersburg.

He was the son of the late Denzil and Elmo Richards Ball of Grantsville.

He worked as a machinist for 30-plus years in the Cleveland area before moving back to Grantsville in 2009.

Surviving are his wife, Regina Ball; four daughters, Rhonda Ball, Rachel Ball, Rebecca Vrabel and Jessica Davis; two sons, James Anthony Ball and Raymond Davis; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two foster boys that he was adopting; one sister, Charlene Lilly; one brother, Denzil Keith “Joe” Ball; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his paternal and maternal grandparents, five uncles, one aunt, and his father-in-law.

Services will be held Saturday, Aug. 13, 2 p.m., at Grantsville Volunteer Fire Dept., with Rev. John Lowther officiating. Patricia M. Bradley, 72, formerly of Smithville, died Friday, Aug. 5, 2016.

She was born in Hookstown, Pa., the daughter of the late John and Pauline Gilbert Halstead.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry “Bugs” Bradley, and one grandson, Travis Fisher.

HOWARD CHARLES ‘Chuck’ TOEPFER II

Howard Charles “Chuck” Toepfer II, whose obituary first appeared in the Chronicle on Nov. 5, 2009, died Monday, Oct. 26, 2009, in Boca Raton, Fla.

He was born in Grantsville, the son of the late Dr. Howard C. Toepfer and Jean Mersch Toepfer.

He was a graduate of Linsly Military Academy, Wheeling, where he was a wrestler and marksman. He served in the Coast Guard Reserves as Seaman First Class in 1961. He planned to follow his father into medicine, but the love of fast cars from riding in his father’s XJ6 Jaguars and Lamborghini took hold. While attending Indiana School of Technology and studying mechanical engineering, his parents built a home in Florida. After marrying, the family settled in South Florida in 1966. After an accident that rendered him a paraplegic, he became a well-known marathoner, though confined to a wheelchair.

Surviving are his wife, Yvette; two sons, Jeffrey and Devon; and three grandchildren, Cassidy, Riese and Harper.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Emily.

In keeping with his instructions, his ashes will be scattered in the spring on top of Spruce Knob. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Monday, Aug. 15, 2016, 2 p.m., at the Toepfer cabin on top of Spruce Knob. Condolences may be left at www.basagic.com.

Lillian Morris Davis, 76, of Grantsville, died Sunday, Aug. 7, 2016, at her residence.

She was born in Smithville, the daughter of the late George Edward and Amy Brissey Morris.

She was a 1958 graduate of Harrisville High School. She was an active member of Knotts Memorial United Methodist Church, Grantsville, serving as a lay member to the W.Va. Annual Conference for several years. She also taught Sunday School and was a choir member.

Surviving are one son, Tim Davis of Grantsville; one daughter, Jill Trippett of Grantsville; two grandchildren, Melanie Garrett of Elizabeth and Marcus Davis of Grantsville; one step-grandchild, Kristie Callihan of Huntington; four great-grandchildren, Aidan and Ashton Garrett and Albany and Baron Davis; two step-great-grandchildren, Raegen and Chase Callihan; one sister, Mildred Heiskell of Parkersburg; five sisters-in-law, Hope Morris of Nitro, Martha Morris of Vienna, Shirley Saunders of Bluefield, Va.; and Clarice Whytsell and Janet Davis, both of Grantsville; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Robert G. (Tank) Davis, whom she married on Oct. 17, 1958, and three brothers, Edward Morris, George Morris and Lawrence Morris.

Joy W. Marquis, 73, of Parkersburg, died Saturday, July 30, 2016, at Camden Clark Medical Center, Parkersburg.

She was born in Calhoun County, the daughter of the late Harley and Minnie May Hicks.

She was a nurse at St. Joseph’s Hospital for 42 years.

Surviving are five children, Joey Marquis and Shawn Marquis, both of Alabama, and David Marquis, Sharon Marquis Cozad and Karen Honaker, all of Parkersburg; one niece, Michelle Dawn Drake of Parkersburg; 14 grandchildren, Jimmy Greene, Joshua Greene, Steven Honaker, Christopher Honaker and Alicia Honaker, all of Parkersburg, Jay Marquis of Georgetown, Ky., Justin Marquis and Gabrielle Marquis, both of Jacksonville Fla., Jessica Marquis, Tyler Deegan and Dustin, Ivy, Daniel and Mason Thweatt, all of Alabama; eight great-grandchildren, Ivy Lee Greene, Bryar and Loralye Greene, Alexis and Riley Walker, Destiny and Alice Honaker and Loraina Robin Padgett; two brothers, Creed Hicks of Coolville and Delbert Hicks of Belpre; and two sisters, Wilma (June) Sams of Parkersburg and Rosie Wolfe.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Joseph; one sister-in-law, Sharon Lee Arthur; and three sisters, Eileene Echols, Bonnie Lucas and Donnie Arthur.

Joanne Blake, 68, of Palestine, died Thursday, July 28, 2016, at Camden Clark Medical Center.

She was the daughter of the late John Gilbert Blake and Erlis Gay Husk Blake.

Surviving are three brothers and sisters-in-law, Leonard and Rhonda Walter Blake of Pennsylvania, Wilma and Roger Smith of Mt.Zion and Carolyn and Steven Paxton of Arnoldsburg, and nieces and nephews, Sadie Blake Gumm, Eric Blake, Cora Smith Nash, Rodney Smith and Teresa Hicks.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Gerald (Jerry) Blake, and one nephew, John Edward Starcher.

Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg, with Rev. Loren Price officiating. Burial was in Gibson Cemetery.

 

KERMIT LEE KINDER

Kermit Lee Kinder, 81, of Charleston, died Thursday, July 28, 2016.

He graduated from Morris Harvey College and retired from Glenville State College as a guidance counselor. He was a member of Kanawha City Church of Christ.

Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Marian Kinder; two sons, Mickey Kinder and wife Debbie and Rickey Kinder and wife Leigh; two daughters, Teresa Kinder Skinner and husband Alton and Tracy Kinder Johnson; eight grandchildren, Britain Kinder, Logan Kinder, Noah Kinder, Cam Kinder, Seth Skinner, Caleb Skinner, Austin Johnson and MacKenzie Johnson; and four great-grandchildren, Isaac, Eli, Lindsey and Kyrah.

He donated his body to the Dept. of Science at West VirginiaUniversity. Per his wishes, there will be no services.

ELEANOR GIFFORD

Eleanor M. Gifford, 76, of Parkersburg, died Wednesday, July 27, 2016, at Camden Clark Medical Center.

She was born in Calhoun County, the daughter of the late Charles and Ethel McIntyre McCray.

She worked in retail at Gabriel Brothers and G.C. Murphy’s, Parkersburg.

Surviving are her husband, Arthur Gifford; two daughters, Angela Lipscomb of Parkersburg and Arlette Foutty of Vienna; two sons, Richard McCray of Brohard and Art Gifford II of Parkersburg; one brother, Johnny Goodnight of Brohard; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Russell McCray, Arnold McCray and Bill McCray.

Services were held at Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, South Parkersburg, with Pastor Jamie Burton officiating. Burial was in Mt.Zion Cemetery, Brohard.

 

MILDRED FLORENCE TRIPPETT

Mildred Florence Trippett, 82, of Grantsville, died Sunday, July 24, 2016, at her home.

She was born at Logan, the daughter of the late Clyde and Mary Eastham.

Surviving are her husband of 63 years, Billy “Pete” Trippett; two sons, Lester and David, both of Grantsville; two daughters, Arlu Poling of Ravenna, Ohio, and Heather Robinson of Tucson, Ariz.; two brothers, Bobby and Jerry; one sister, Velma; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and numerous nephews and nieces.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, Olive, Lucille and Thelma, and four brothers, Okie, Edward, Malcom and Harold.

Memorial service celebrating her life will be held at First Baptist Church, Grantsville, on Saturday, July 30, at 1 p.m.

Janet L. Thomas, 79, formerly of Elizabeth, died Saturday, July 23, 2016, at Arcadia Nursing Facility, Coolville, Ohio.

She was born in Calhoun County, the daughter of the late Lexie K. and Dollie M. Hughes Miller.

She was a member of Evangelical Methodist Church, Little Hocking, Ohio.

Surviving are two sons, Philip Thomas, Jr., of Little Hocking and Richard Thomas of Arnoldsburg; four daughters, Beverly Roberts of Coolville, Sandra Harmon of Belpre, Cathy Griener  of New Cumberland and Linda Null of Elizabeth; one brother, Johnny Miller of Mt. Zion; two sisters, Wanda L. Miller of Mt. Zion and Mary Riggs of Little Hocking; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Philip H. Thomas, Sr.; one brother, Donald Miller; and one sister, Barbara Riggs.

Services were held at Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, South Parkersburg, with Pastor Ed Beatty officiating. Burial was in Sunset Memory Gardens.

 

JUDITH LEA SMITH SWISHER

Judith Lea Smith Swisher, 71, of Ripley, died Thursday, July 21, 2016.

She was born in Harrisville, the daughter of the late Herbert Clarence Smith and Edith Virginia Smith.

She was a 1963 graduate of Calhoun County High School. She worked for Dr. Mendenhall and Hiehle, DDS, Parkersburg, for many years before moving to the Ripley area and joining her husband in serving the Lord at Parchment Valley Baptist Center, including 15 years at Parchment Valley Baptist Conference Center.

Surviving are her husband of 53 years, Charles Ray Swisher; one son, Gregory Swisher and wife Melanie of Ripley; five grandchildren, Michael and Jillian Bright and Clayton Gregory Swisher, all of Ripley, Charles Cordell Swisher of the U.S. Navy and Jacob Jackson Jude of Huntington; one great-grandchild, Nathaniel Sean Bright of Ripley; three brothers, Herbert Clarence (Chuck) Smith, Jr., Allen Dewayne Smith of Kenna and Daniel Keith Smith of Grantsville; and two sisters, Carol Ann Lewis of Conway, S.C., and Nell Jean Smith of Parkersburg.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Lewis Clay Smith.

Dorma Alice Hartshorn, 84, of Grantsville, died Friday, July 22, 2016, at Camden Clark Medical Center, Parkersburg.

She was born in Shock, the daughter of the late Curtis Ray and Mary Pearl Vanhorn Miller.

She had worked at Rubber Fabricators and retired from B.F. Goodrich. She was a member of Shock Church of Christ.

Surviving are four sons, Lyle of Mineral Wells, Gary of Big Bend, Kevin of Grantsville and Colin of Shock; one daughter, Carol Collins of Petroleum; 16 grandchildren, Jessica, Justin, Boyd, Jeremiah, Gabriel, Cade, Clint, Shayna, Michael, Brittany, Loretta, Scott, Jay, Andrew, Jarad and Amanda; 26 great-grandchildren; two brothers, George and Willard; one sister, Herma; and family friend, George Mouser.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles and Rondal, and one daughter-in-law, Susan and husband Boyd in 1994.

Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Evangelist Vernon Kerns officiating. Burial was in Collins Community Cemetery, Stumptown.

Grace L. Wagoner, 91, of Big Bend, died Friday, July 22, 2016, at Minnie Hamilton Health System.

She was the daughter of the late Clara and Leamon Richards.

She was a lifelong member of Spruce Hollow Community Church.

Surviving are one son, Gary Wagoner and wife Connie; one daughter, Sharon Haymaker and husband Jim; eight grandchildren, Gary J. Wagoner, Cheryl Richards, Barb Greathouse, Dustin and Stacey Wagoner, Stephen Haymaker, Brian Wagoner and Tara Foster; two sisters, Edna Radcliff of Big Bend and Lily Bush of Parkersburg; and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Wagoner; one son, Rodney Wagoner; one granddaughter, Rhonda Haymaker; three sisters; and five brothers.

Freddie Lounette Sturm, 94, Grantsville, died Wednesday, July 20, 2016, at The Wyngate at River’s Edge Senior Living, Proctorville, Ohio.

She was born in Houlka, Miss., the daughter of the late Fred and Emma James.

She retired from Calhoun County Board of Education and was a member of Order of Eastern Star and First Baptist Church, Grantsville, and North Baptist Church, Parkersburg.

Surviving are two daughters, Linda Sturm of Huntington and Patricia Propst and husband Mike of Grantsville; one son, Jim Sturm and wife Jean of Proctorville; and four grandchildren, Zachary Propst and wife Nikita of Reader, Carrie Propst of Knoxville, Tenn., Amy Sturm of Huntington and Jason Sturm of Fayetteville.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Sturm, Jr., and one sister, Anna Grace Roberts.

GLEN PORTER ROBINSON

Glen Porter “Chief” Robinson, 76, of Lubeck, died Monday, July 18, 2016, at his residence.

He was born at Frozen, the son of the late Earl V. Robinson and Minnie B. Lawson Robinson.

At age seven, his family moved to Tanner, where he lived until joining the U.S. Navy at age 17 in 1957. He retired as Chief Signalman on Dec. 7, 1978, after 22 years of service. He earned a bachelor’s degree in geology from Marietta College in 1981, retired from W.Va. DEP as an oil and gas inspector in 2001, and retired from the Federal EPA as a field inspector in 2005. He was a Third Degree Mason, Coast Guard Reservist, lifetime member of Vietnam Veterans of America, DVA No. 32, Davisville, and VFW.

Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Virginia Anne Engle; one son, Richard L. Robinson; daughter-in-law, Teresa; one daughter, Kelley S. Hardman; son-in-law, Justin; three grandchildren, Seanna Rose Johnson, Dallas Gray Hardman and Ella Anne Hardman; two sisters, Helen Keith and Judy Hardbarger; sister-in-law, Karey Jo Green; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one son, J. Shawn Robinson; two brothers, Vinton R. Robinson and Melvin H. Robinson; and one sister-in-law, Mary Jane Robinson.

Services were held at Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, Parkersburg. As per his request, his remains will be buried at sea.

IVAN HENDERSON NICHOLAS

Ivan Henderson Nicholas, 76, of Brohard, died Sunday, July 17, 2016, at his family farm.

He was the son of the late Acie and Dola Parsons Nicholas.

He worked most of his life in the oil and gas industry and retired from Creston Oil, Mt. Zion, as an equipment operator.

Surviving are one son, Michael Nicholas of Barboursville; one daughter, Kimberly Nicholas of Huntington; two step-sons, Larry Springston of Grantsville and Donnie Springston of St. Marys; three step-daughters, Kathy Obundo of San Diego, Calif., Carol Young of Parkersburg and Debbie Ladd of Galienton, Tenn.; three brothers, Russell Burl Nicholas and Calvin Glen Nicholas, both of Bear Run, and Carder Paul Nicholas of Orma; five sisters, Nella Jean Yancey of Buck Fork Road, Carlene Frederick of Nobe, Evalene Drake of Clemmons, N.C., Connie Nichols of Bear Run and Linda McQuain of Flatwoods; three grandchildren, Brandi Nicholas, David Ryon Nicholas and Chasity Copley, one great-grandchild, Isaac; and several step-grandchildren, step-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Greathouse Nicholas; two infant brothers, Cecil and Bernard; and two sisters, Velma Jean Frame and Geraldine Blair.

TYLER CORDELL WILLIAM KING

Tyler Cordell William King, 20, of Sandyville, died Tuesday, July 12, 2016, in Sandyville.

He was born in Parkersburg, the son of Kevin King and Lisa D. Starcher.

He was a 2014 graduate of Roane County High School and was a four-year letterman as a wide receiver, where he broke several school records. He was awarded a full scholarship to Alderson-Broaddus University.

Surviving are his parents, Kevin and Holly King of Sandyville and Lisa D. Starcher of Spencer; paternal grandparents, Bernard and Donnie King of Ripley and Carol Carpenter of Spencer; maternal grandparents, Arnold and Janie Starcher of Ft. Myers, Fla., and Sharman Matthew of Arnoldsburg; five siblings, Jocelyn Cunningham, Ali Grether, Nate Weekley, Colton King and Kaycee King; three nieces; three nephews; and various aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Edmund Carpenter, and great-grandparents, Willie “Lee” and Pearl King, Eli and Addie Hively, and Paul Evans.

Memorial service was held at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home, Spencer, with Rev. Danny Whited and Rev. Russ Stump officiating.

 

LESTER WILLIAMS

Lester H. Williams, 90, of Newark, died Wednesday, July 13, 2016, at home.

He was born in Grantsville, the son of the late Harry and Bessie Hickman Williams.

He served in the U.S. Navy on the LST 547 in the South Pacific during World War II and received seven service medals. He was a 1946 graduate of Calhoun County High School and worked for Monongahela Power Co., Parkersburg, and retired from DuPont Washington Works in December, 1984, with 33-1/2 years in the power and service division.

Surviving are his wife of 67 years, Ona Fay Williams; three daughters, Linda Butcher of Guysville, Ohio, Bonnie Millhone of Elizabeth and Laura Williams of Durham, N.C.; one sister, Jo Ann (Jody) Daugherty of Mineral Wells; two brothers, George Williams of Parkersburg and Harlan Williams of Elizabeth; and five grandchildren, Paul Chambers of Silver Springs, Nev., Shaun Butcher of Frederick, Md., Jamie Butcher of Parkersburg, Shyla Schoelkopf of Belpre, Ohio, and Tyler Millhone of Jacksonville, Fla.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Sherry Richards; one son, Michael Williams; two brothers, Paul Williams, who was missing in the Korean War, and Edwin Williams; and one sister, Bonita File.

EUGENE CECIL GREATHOUSE, SR.

Eugene Cecil Greathouse, Sr., 82, of Newton Falls, Ohio, formerly of Calhoun County, died Monday, July 11, 2016, from injuries sustained in an auto accident.

He was born in Wirt County, the son of the late Holly and Ottis Saltkeld Greathouse.

He retired in 1996 as a tow motor operator at Denman Tire and was a member of Warren First Assembly Church of God.

Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Mary Elizabeth Maze Greathouse; four daughters, Patty Howard, Cindy Jarvis, Judy Byers and Elizabeth Schwab; one son, Eugene Greathouse, Jr.; two brothers, Holly Greathouse and Garry Greathouse; one sister, Gwen Gibson; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Lindsy Jarvis; two sisters, Garnet and Bessie; and three brothers, Bud, Carl and Larry.

PATTY HICKMAN

Patty L. Hickman 77, of Vienna, died Sunday, July 17, 2016, at her residence.

She was born in Doddridge County, the daughter of the late James P. and Rachel S. Pierce Leeson.

She was a homemaker and worked for Wood County Board of Education as a cook. She was an active member of Beechwood Presbyterian Church, where she had been involved with The Sanctuary House.

Surviving are two daughters, Melissa Bennett of Vienna and Tina Perdue of Williamstown; one son, Craig Hickman of Mt. Zion; one sister, Margaret (Lucille) Perine of Pennsylvania; two brothers, James Leeson of Vienna and Charles Leeson of Parkersburg; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert L. Hickman in 2011; two sons, Jeffery Hickman and Phillip Hickman; and one brother, Jerry Leeson.

JENNETTE JANE EDGELL LANE

Jennette Jane Edgell Lane, 96, of Three Rivers, Mich., died Saturday, July 9, 2016.

She was born in Marion County, the daughter of the late Ray and Lucy Cain Edgell.

She attended Norwood Elementary School and received her GED from East Fairmont High School. She was a U.S. Air Force veteran. She received an honorable discharge in 1957 with a rank of A/2C. She received a nursing degree from Texas Wesleyan College and worked at John Peter Smith Hospital and Veterans hospitals in Dallas,Pittsburgh and Clarksburg, where she retired as a supervisor in 1988. She resided in Salem with her sister, Lillieray Hall, until five years ago, and with her son, Charles, since that time.

Surviving are one son, Charles Benton Lane of Three Rivers; one brother, Okla E. Edgell and wife Arlene; one daughter-in-law, Carolyn Lane of Orma; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three sons, Hurl Lane, Jr., Eugene Ray Lane and Kenneth Glen Lane; two brothers, Doak E. Edgell and James E. Edgell; and one sister, Lillieray Hall.

She chose cremation. Committal service will be held on Friday, 1 p.m., at West Virginia National Cemetery, Grafton, with Rev. Jim Lane speaking, and a three-gun volley by Grafton Honor Guards. Service will close with a presentation of the flag by the Air Force.

 

LETA BENNETT

Leta V. Bennett, 89, of Morgantown, formerly of Pennsboro, died Sunday, July 3, 2016, in Morgantown.

She was born in Grantsville, the daughter of the late Oral and Cecil Elliott Smith.

She began her working career in Calhoun County Courthouse and later worked for the former M. Serman and Co., Pennsboro, in the payroll department. She was a member of Pennsboro United Methodist Church, 50-year member of Pennsboro Woman’s Club and 50-year member of Pennsboro Chapter 26, Order of Eastern Star. On June 10, 1951, she was united in marriage to Harold C. Bennett in Grantsville.

Surviving are one son, Gregory O. Bennett of Morgantown; one daughter, Sabrina Hanlon of Morgantown; three grandchildren, Valerie Boley of Morgantown, Alexis Conway of Pavilion, N.Y., and David Hanlon of Pennsboro; nine great-grandchildren, Brianna Hanlon of Boiling Springs, S.C., Jonah Hanlon and Hayden and Tanner Boley, all of Morgantown, Ella and Emily Conway of Pavilion, Landen Hanlon of St. Marys and Michael D. Hanlon and Matthew Mahaney, both of Pennsboro; and one sister, Ann Duskey (Donald) of Texas.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold C. Bennett, in 2000; two sisters, Lucreita Yoak and an infant; two brothers, Carl Smith and O.D. Smith; and one daughter-in-law, Mary Ann Bennett.

Donna Sue Hardbarger, 65, of Harrisville, Hazelgreen Community, died Saturday, July 9, 2016, at Carehaven of Pleasants, Belmont.

She was born in Parkersburg, the daughter of the late William and Geneva Wright Snodgrass.

She worked in Economy Garment Factory, Ritchie County, for several years and retired as a line worker from Simonton Windows, Pennsboro. She was a member of Fairview United Methodist Church, Hazelgreen.

Dallas Ray Frederick, 83, of Nobe, died Saturday, July 2, 2016.

He was born at Freed, the son of the late Benjamin Franklin and Virgie Richards Frederick.

He was a U.S. Army veteran and served during the Korean War. He was a member of Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church, National Rifle Association, and American Legion. He coached Little League football, and worked with the Boy Scouts and American Cancer Society.

Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Carlene Nicholas Frederick; two sons, Jeffrey Frederick and wife Becky of Big Springs and Kyle Frederick of Nashville, Tenn.; one daughter, Nina Whytsell and husband Douglas of Martinsburg; one brother, George Frederick and wife Patty of Big Springs; six grandchildren; one step-grandson; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by three sisters, Evajean Sams, Lillian Frederick and Edna Jarvis, and two brothers, Denzil Frederick and Roger Frederick.

Ruth Bartlett, 92, of Big Bend, died Saturday, July 2, 2016, at Minnie Hamilton Health System.

She was the daughter of the late Alfred R. Holbert and Lola Norman Holbert.

She was a 1940 graduate of Calhoun County High School and had been the longest surviving member of Brooksville Missionary Baptist Church (82 years), where she had taught Sunday School and served as church pianist for over 50 years.

Surviving are one daughter, Karen Altizer of Sandridge; one son, Tom Bartlett of Spencer; two granddaughters, Susan Chapman, and Brooke Henthorn; three great-granddaughters, Rachel Rader and Aimee and Sydney Chapman; and one great-great-granddaughter, Addilyn Paige Rader.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Alfred R. Holbert, Jr., and her husband, Starling, whom she married on June 28, 1942.

Alma Nellie Cottrell, 92, of Ivydale, died Saturday, July 2, 2016, at her home.

She was born in Chloe, the daughter of the late Herbert and Oscena West Truman.

Surviving are two daughters, Lois Cummings of Chloe and Kay Coleman of Ivydale; three sons, Lewis Cottrell of Nebo, Randy Cottrell of Clay and Ronnie Cottrell of Maysel; 14 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Okey Lee Cottrell; one son, Roy Lynn Cottrell, Sr.; one granddaughter, Jackie Lynn Cottrell; one great-granddaughter, Katelynn Marie Dunigan; and one great-grandson, Johnny Ray Cottrell, Jr.

Donald Earl “Don” Dye, 77, died Saturday, July 2, 2016, at Carehaven, St. Marys.

He was born in Coalfork, Calhoun County, the son of the late Harold and Estie Greathouse Dye.

He was a 1959 graduate of Calhoun County High School. He worked at State Constuction, D&T Construction and Viscoe before retiring from D&D Construction. He was a member of the Beekeeper Association in Ritchie and Roane counties.

Surviving are one daughter, Kimmy Lynn Bishop of Vienna; one grandson, Travis Hatfield of Brohard; two granddaughters, Becky Bartlett of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Mariah Bishop of Harrisville; two great-granddaughters, Jaiden and Elaine Bartlett of Colorado; one sister, Ruthellen Bell of Smithville; and one brother, Keith Dye of North Carolina.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 44 years, Delores M. Goodnight; one daughter, Tammy Sue Hatfield; three brothers, Dennis (Midge), Donnie and infant Johnny; and one sister, Maryland.

CATHERINE HATHAWAY

Catherine Hathaway, 98, of Parkersburg, died Tuesday, June 28, 2016, at Wyngate Assisted Living, where she has been a resident for 13 years.

She was born in Millstone, the daughter of the late Thomas S. and Sarah L. Miller Cunningham.

She was a homemaker and worked as a nurse’s aide at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital, Parkersburg, for many years. She was a member of First Church of the Nazarene, where she was active when she was younger.

Surviving are her twin children, Tom Hathaway of Vienna and Janet Snook of Ft. Myers, Fla.; three grandchildren, T.R. Hathaway  of Vienna, Michael Snook  of St. Charles, Ill., and Sharon Talarczyk  of Dayton, Ohio; and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Homer Hathaway, one grandson, Scott Hathaway; and two sisters, Madyline Slider and Oleda Leach.

Services were held  Saturday at Leavitt Funeral Home, Parkersburg, with Pastor Keith Hostutler officiating. Burial in Mt. Olivet Cemetery.

 

DANNIE NEAL HAYS

Dannie Neal Hays, 71, of Arnoldsburg, died Wednesday, June 22, 2016.

He was born at Left Hand, Roane County, the son of the late Isaac Jackson Hays and Mildred Francis Snodgrass Hays.

He was a U.S. Army veteran and served in Vietnam. He was a member of VFW Post, Englewood, Fla., and American Legion, Stow, Ohio.

Surviving are his wife, Judith L. Hays, two sons, Steven Hays and Robert Hodovan; one daughter, Danielle Wojtowicz; one granddaughter, Jessica Smith; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Carless Coy Hays and William Hays.

Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg, with Rev. Gary Drake officiating. Burial was in Clover Cemetery.

 

REED BENNETT

Reed R. Bennett, 86, of Elyria, Ohio, died Friday, June 10, 2016, at University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center.

He was born in Cremo, the son of the late William and Mabel Bennett.

He was a U.S. Army veteran. He retired as a truck driver for Fruehauf Trucking in 1990 after 40 years of service. He was a member of Avon Lake Masonic Lodge.

Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Helena Kerby Bennett; one daughter, Sharon Anthony; one son, Gary Bennett; eight grandchildren, Jennifer, David, Mark, Kevin, Kyle, Megan, Brigin and Morgan; and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Reva Boggs.

Memorial service was held at Laubenthal-Mercado Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Elyria, with Rev. Kathy Ketchum officiating. Burial was private.

 

BRUCE KENNETH MORGAN

Bruce Kenneth Morgan, 72, of Orma, died Sunday, May 15, 2016.

He was a surveyor by trade, and cartographer, carpenter and poet, and played guitar and harmonica.

Surviving are one son, Christopher Morgan and wife Jennifer; one brother, Kirk Morgan and wife Joni of Utah; his nieces and nephews; and many friends, whom he also considered as family.

He was preceded in death by his wife, DeAnna, in October 2015, and his sister, Patricia Tobias, in 2010.

Memorial service was held at his home.

Bonnie Berdine Adams, 91, of Partlow, Va., formerly of Big Bend, died Tuesday, June 7, 2016, at her residence.

She was the daughter of the late Seldon and Fanny Parsons.

Surviving are one daughter, Donna Sue Gomez of Spotsylvania, Pa.; one son, Donald Kenneth Adams of Partlow; two grandchildren, Danny E. Gomez, Jr., of Greenville, Va., and Dawn Renee Adams of Partlow; three great-grandchildren, Danny E. Gomez III, Candace Marie Gomez and Carrie Anne Gomez; two great-great-grandchildren, Danny IV and Grayson; two sisters, Eva Fern Swisher and Maxine Bell; and one brother, Denzil Parsons.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Constance L. Smith; four brothers, Jimmy, Charles, Donald and Lonnie; and three sisters, Louise, Joanne and Donna.

Graveside service was held at Goodnight Cemetery, Big Bend.

RONALD GLEN KUHL

Ronald Glen Kuhl, 74, died Monday, June 13, 2016.

He was born at Letter Gap, the son of the late Glen and Maxine Harris Kuhl.

He attended Bird Grade School and Normantown High School. He began working in 1960 as a masker in the paint department at Ford Motor Co., Lorain, Ohio. He worked for 4-D (Flying W), Mobil Service Station, Log Cabin Exxon, and was self-employed as an auto body repair and paint specialist. He retired from Dowell-Schlumberger, Glenville, as a mechanic. He was a member and Sunday School teacher at Hardman Fork Baptist Church and had been an ordained deacon at Grafton Baptist Church, Ohio.

Surviving are his wife, Karen Wyatt Kuhl, whom he married in 1963; one son, Timothy (Lorie) Kuhl of North Carolina; one daughter, Patti, of Kentucky; one granddaughter, Chante of Texas; one grandson, Deacon of North Carolina; two sisters, Janice (Earl) Miller of Normantown and Betty (Chuck) McCumbers of Glenville; one brother, Lanny (Roberta) Kuhl of Weston; two brothers-in-law, Nelson Wyatt of Reno, Ohio, and David “Stretch” (Levi) Wyatt of Beckley; and one sister-in-law, Nancy (Gary) Mehay of Grafton, Ohio.

He was preceded in death by one son, SFC Ronnie L. Kuhl; one brother-in-law, Duane Reed; and three sisters-in-law, Tammy Wyatt, Donna Wyatt and Merry Wyatt Cormack.

Calvin Lester Smith, 90, of Sparta, Mich., died Monday, June 6, 2016.

He was born in Frozen Run in the winter of 1925, the son of the late Spurgeon and Enid Cooper Smith.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and earned a Bronze Star and the Eastern Theater Ribbon in Europe as part of the 99th Division Infantry in the Battle of the Bulge. He retired from General Motors. Surviving are one son, Billy (Terry) Smith; two daughters, Roberta Simmons and Claudia (Jim) Arkesteyn; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Richard, Lowell and Jack; three sisters, Ruby, Patricia and Dormal; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Pauline Patricia Miller Smith; two daughters, Jeanie Moore and Kimberly Smith; and two brothers, Emmons Smith and John Smith.

According to his wishes, cremation has taken place. Memorial Service will be held on Friday, June 10, 2016, 10 a.m., at Meadowlark Assisted Living, 65 Ida Red, Sparta, MI 49345.

Opal May Vandal Jones, 33, of Brohard, died Saturday, June 4, 2016, at Charleston Area Medical Center, Memorial Division.

She was the daughter of William and Martha Ash Vandal.

Jack Mace, 86, of Arnoldsburg, died Tuesday, May 31, 2016, at his home.

He was born in Henry’s Fork, the son of the late Harmie and Pauline Carpenter Mace.

He was retired from Harry C. Boggs and was a member of Leatherbark Community Church.

Surviving are three sons, Don Mace of Cottageville, Daniel Mace of Mt Zion and Doug Mace of Spencer; four sisters, Helen Lester of Spencer, Lenore Helper of St. Albans, Kathryn Grady of Charleston and Dorothy Conner of Spencer; one brother, Bob Mace of Elyria, Ohio; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Gladys Pearl Elliott “Peggy” Cain, 84, of Grantsville, died Monday, May 30, 2016, at Clay Health Care Center, Ivydale.

She was born in Kanawha County, the daughter of the late Jeff and Leethe Sturm Elliott.

She retired from BFGoodrich, Grantsville, in 1995, where she was an inspector and supervisor. She performed volunteer work at Minnie Hamilton Health System and Community Resources, Inc., following her retirement. Surviving are two daughters, Karen L. Law and husband Tom of Grantsville and Sharon E. Settle and husband Jack of Garrett County, Md.; three grandchildren, Brian Law and wife Michelle of Richmond, Va., Jamie Kamp and husband Brian of Grantsville and Matthew Settle of Garrett Co., MD; three great-grandchildren, Madison, Cole and Benjamin; one sister, Dottie; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by five sisters, Betty, Scottie, Grey, Edith and Ella Belle, and three brothers, Jeff, Victor and Morford.

Lewis Albert Naylor, 86, of Belpre, Ohio, died at Camden Clark Medical Center, Parkersburg on Saturday, May 21, 2016.

He was born in Hur, the son of the late Dewey and Ala Slider Naylor.

He had been shop foreman for ALDAD Distributors for 40 years and had worked for Paul’s TV and George Marcus TV. He was a member of Lockport United Methodist Church and a member of FOPA. He had been a dispatcher for Belpre Police Dept. and member of the Auxiliary, Washington County Sheriff’s office. He was a member of Fort Harmar Gun Club, Civil Defense member and amateur radio operator, with a call sign of W8KXQ.

Surviving are two sons, Ronald Dale Naylor of Reedsville, Ohio, and Stephen Lewis Naylor of Parkersburg; one sister, Oma Ollidene Hall of Arnoldsburg; three grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Claudette May Naylor; two brothers; and two sisters.

Jo Ann Nicholas, 65, of Morgantown, died Tuesday, May 24, 2016, at Ruby Memorial Hospital.

She was born in Grantsville, the daughter of the late Paul and Delta Godfrey Hayhurst.

She retired as a registered nurse from Harrison County Health Dept. and served on the W.Va. Botanic Garden Board. She had been an active member of Clarksburg Baptist Church for 24 years prior to moving to Morgantown in 2006 and was a member of Avery United Methodist.

Surviving are her husband of 46 years, Gary Nicholas; one son, Jason Bryan Nicholas of Sydney, Australia; mother-in-law, Lenora Nicholas; one sister-in-law Myra Lowe and husband Kenneth Martis; and one niece, Elizabeth Frederick and husband William.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Richard Hayhurst and an infant, Hoyt Hayhurst.

Kose Whytsell, 78, of Parkersburg, died Tuesday, May 24, 2016, at Muskingum Valley Nursing Center, Beverly, Ohio.

He was born in Calhoun County, the son of the late Simon Clinton and Laura Kerby Whytsell.

He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in Germany. He retired in 1995 from G.E. Plastics.

Surviving are his wife, Emma Joan Satterfield Whytsell; one daughter, Cheryl L. Himelrick of Parkersburg; two sons, Harold D. Whytsell of Mineral Wells and Clinton Whytsell of Parkersburg; two sisters, Geneva Morgan of Georgia and Katherine “Kate” Ladd of Cutler, Ohio, and six grandchildren, Ryan, Jake, Chad, Dustin, Coltant and Bryce.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Howard and Eugene, and two sisters, Louise Nevitt and Jewell Marsh.

She was born in Calhoun County, the daughter of the late Lee and Ocie Bailey Hall.

She was a 1957 graduate of Calhoun County High School. She was a homemaker and co-founder of Houchin Construction and Houchin Rental & Sales and owner of Houchin Fabric Shop.

Surviving are her husband of 58 years, Billie D. Houchin, whom she married on Aug. 10, 1957; two daughters, Debbie Varda and husband John of Spencer and Dee Starcher and husband David of Arnoldsburg; one son, Jeff Houchin and wife Kelley of Arnoldsburg; seven grandchildren; Andrew Varda of Los Angeles, Calif., Zachary Houchin and Matthew Houchin, both of Morgantown, Sarah Varda of Ft. He was a rural route carrier for the United States Postal Service. He retired in 2007 after more than 30 years of service. He was a descendant of Major George Downs, who served Calhoun Countyduring the Civil War.

Surviving are his wife, Connie Sue Downs of Arnoldsburg; one daughter, Melody Ann Downs of Evans; one brother, William (Bill) Downs and wife Mary of Huntington; two nephews, Martin Downs and family of Oregon and Dr. Matthew Downs and family of Wisconsin; one niece, Paula Starcher and husband Fred of Arnoldsburg; and three great-nieces, Nicohle (Nickie) Ballard (husband Tyler and son Korbin) and Samantha Starcher, both of Parkersburg, and Whitney Moss (husband Jeremy and daughter Caydence) of Arnoldsburg.

Private graveside service will be held at a later date after cremation. There will be no public service or visitation.

BRADLEY TODD McCROSKEY

Bradley Todd McCroskey, 31, of Grantsville, died unexpectedly on Saturday, May 7, 2016.

He was born at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Parkersburg, the son of Charles and Sherry McCroskey of Grantsville.

He was a 2003 honor roll graduate of Calhoun County High Schooland 2012 graduate of the motorcycle technology program at YTI Career Institute, York, Pa., with certificates in progressive suspension installation and snap-on meter certification, and received Student of the Term in 2012. He received his basic welding certificate from Calhoun-Gilmer Career Center in April 2014. He raced semi-professionally from 1997 to 2002.

Surviving in addition to his parents are one sister, April Brady Whipkey; grandparents, Helen Jordan, Burl and Della Nichols and Judy Bowman; nieces and nephews, Joseph, Alejandra, Avery and Autumn Whipkey; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was cremated. Memorial service will be held Sunday, 4 p.m., at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Rev. Kevin Church officiating. Visitation will be held Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m.

Hollie C. Bailey, 83, of Milton, died Monday, May 2, 2016, at his home.

He was born in Minnora, the son of the late Okey and Mae Badgett Bailey.

He was a member of Operating Engineers Local 132.

Surviving are his wife of 63 years, Nina Deweese Bailey; four daughters and sons-in-law, Rhonda and Austin Vance and Sandy Bailey and John Cabell, all of Milton, and Debbie and Charles Lemon and Shari and Bill Smith, all of Hurricane; six grandchildren, Brad Vance, Jamie Sunderland, Melissa Morrison, Travis Bailey, Jason Shirkey and Brandi Bailey; two step-grandchildren, Bethany Tolliver and Gena Stonestreet; one brother, Delmar Bailey of Minnora; one sister, Myrl Bailey of Tariff; and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, Larry “Beetle” Bailey, and one brother, Basil Bailey.

FRANKLIN DELANO ROOSEVELT ‘Rose’ COTTRELL

Franklin Delano Roosevelt “Rose” Cottrell, 79, of Stewartstown, died Wednesday, May 11, 2016, at his home.

He was born in Calhoun County, the son of the late French and Estie Cottrill Cottrell.

He was a coal miner for 38 years, having last worked for Greystone Mining Co. He was a member of UMWA.

Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Betty L. Fitch Cottrell; five children and their spouses, Rita Mae and Vernon Deal of Masontown and Mike and Terrie Cottrell, Steve and Debbie Cottrell, Chris and Mabel Cottrell and Tim and Amy Cottrell, all of the Morgantown area; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews and their families.

He was the last of 13 brothers and sisters. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Bid, Raymond and Randolph; and seven sisters, Ranie Kyer of Vienna, Hanie Lane of Nicut, Irene Friend of Orrville,Ohio, Lorene Bly of Sandusky, Ohio, Dorothy Lasha and Flossie Simmons, both of Mt. Zion, and Marie Johnson of Minerva, Ohio; and two siblings in infancy.

Glen W. Sears, 87, of Chloe, died Wednesday, May 11, 2016, at Miletree Center, Spencer.

He was born at Nicut, the son of the late Porter Sears and Roxie Siers.

He was a veteran of the Korean War and retired from Ford Motor Co., Cleveland, Ohio.

Surviving are one brother, Thomas Cooper; two daughters, Dottie Bailey of Stewart, Fla., and Debbie Caldwell of Clendenin; three sons, Jerry Sears of Northfield, Ohio, William “Bill” Sears of Easley,S.C.; and Alan Sears of Chloe; 12 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Norma A. Sears; one daughter, Kathy Alaine Sears; one brother, Addis Cooper; and one sister, Dolly Cooper.

Emogene Bowers, 73, of Spencer, died Tuesday, May 10, 2016.

She was the daughter of the late Vear and Mabel Louk Metz of Arnoldsburg.

She worked at Kellwood Co. for many years.

Surviving are one son, Larry Bowers of Spencer; two grandsons, Shawn Bowers of Ripley and Brandon Bowers of Spencer; three sisters, Mary Butler of Arnoldsburg, Elsie Hamrick of Massillon, Ohio, and Bertha Dyer of Kentucky; one brother, Warren Metz of Shreve, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Bowers; one sister, Grace Metz; and an infant son.

Jennifer J. Hall, 60, of Arnoldsburg, died Tuesday, May 10, 2016, at her residence.

She was born at Grantsville, the daughter of the late Jennings Paul Helmick and Mae Bess Bailey Helmick Newell.

She was a fitness instructor and had taught classes throughout the area. She was a member of Spencer Church of Christ and Roane County Gun Club, where she had won several shooting awards.

Surviving are her husband, Larry A. Hall of Arnoldsburg; one son, Jonathan P. “Johnny” Hall and wife Nicky of Elizabeth; one sister, Marlane McCumbers and husband Denzil of Rosedale; one niece, Tonya Adolf and husband Courtenay and children Chase and Mason of Nolensville, Tenn.; one nephew, Jennings McCumbers and wife Jennifer and children Braden and Bentley of Rosedale; and her step-father, Harry Newell of Orma.

Barbara Jean Ritchie Crooks, 77, of Parkersburg, died Monday, May 9, 2016.

She was born in Grantsville, the daughter of the late George Carl Ritchie and Mary Leora Perkins Ritchie.

She was a homemaker and a member of Red Hill United MethodistChurch.

Surviving are three sons, Carl Alan Crooks of Stillwell and Rick Crooks and Tim Crooks, both of Parkersburg; two daughters, Cathy Wheeler of Parkersburg and Debbie Hanna of Parkersburg; six grandchildren, Hannah Crooks, Ryan Paul, Derek Wheeler, Tiffany Wheeler, Zackary Hanna and Tony Cronin; six great-grandchildren, including Alley Jo Cronin, Sapphire Petty and Ashton Webb; and one great-great-granddaughter, Harper Madison.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Amsden Crooks; two brothers, Bob Ritchie and Tom Ritchie; and one grandchild, Edward Crooks.

Services were held at Red Hill United Methodist Church, with Rev. Mary Zimmer officiating. Burial was in German Lutheran Cemetery.

Franklin Sandy, 57, of Spencer, died Wednesday, Apr. 6, 2016.

He was the son of Franklin Eugene and Florence Lockhart Sandy.

Surviving are four sisters, Eula Honaker of Parkersburg, Molly Sandy of Belpre, Ohio, Stella Oldham of Coolville, Ohio, and Cathy Sandy of Arnoldsburg; one brother, Glen Sandy of Coolville; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Edna Wilson.

HAROLD WAYNE NIDA

Harold Wayne Nida, 77, of Creston, died Friday, May 6, 2016.

He was born in Parkersburg, the son of the late Julia Mollander.

He was raised by the late Samuel and Bertha Nida on a farm in Clover. He attended Roane County schools and was a 1956 graduate of Spencer High School. He enlisted in the 150th Cavalry of W.Va. Army National Guard at age 16. He transferred into the U.S. Navy at age 17 and spent 20 years on active duty. He served five tours at sea and was stationed in Yosouka, Iwakuni and Sasebo, Japan; Subic Bay, Philippines, and Norfolk, Va. He was deployed to Vietnam from 1969-1971. He was awarded the Navy Achievement Medal with Valor, Navy Good Conduct Medal with four bronze stars, National Defense Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. He was honorably discharged Aug. 29, 1975, as Chief Petty Officer and returned to Spencer. He earned an associate degree from Arch A. Moore, Jr., Vocational, Technical and Adult Education Center. For the next 20 years, he ran his own construction company.

Surviving are his wife of 40 years, Patricia Nida, and two daughters, Peggy Piercy of Columbus, Ohio, and Angela Nida of Fairfield, Ct.

Surviving are her husband of 65 years, Eugene Deel; one son, Ricky Deel of Paris, Tenn.; one daughter, Cheryl Hersman of Ripley; six grandchildren, Betsi Foster of Paris, Billy Deel of Milan, Tenn., Megan Flores of Austin, Tex., Jada Williams of Ripley, Brandon Hersman of Washington and Darrin Hersman of Covington, Ky.; nine great-grandchildren, Scotty Bizeau, Jack and Persie Foster, Lucas Deel, Colson, Amaris and Briley Williams and Brody and Korie Hersman; and one sister, Glenna Carpenter.

MELVIN STEWART FILKINS

Melvin Stewart Filkins, 77, of Chloe, died Sunday, May 1, 2016, at Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston.

He was born in Savannah, N.Y., the son of the late Alvin and Grace Card Filkins.

He was a 1956 graduate of Port Byron Central High School, New York, and was a U.S. Army veteran. He was a superintendent for the Dept. of Highways in New York State, with over 30 years of experience.

Surviving are his wife, Teresa Keaton Filkins, whom he married Aug. 29, 1958; one son, Rodney S. Filkins and companion Maggie Lawton of Port Byron, N.Y.; four daughters, Teresa N. Dempsey and husband Edward Rhonda S. Lofft and husband Kenneth, all of Auburn, N.Y., Pamela L. La-Seigna and husband Mision of Seneca Falls, N.Y., and Paulette Y. Jones and husband Daniel of Port Byron; three siblings, Norman G. Filkins of Wichita Falls, Tex., Marion Hickey of Port Bryon and Helen Knapp of Weedsport, N.Y.; 11 grandchildren, Christopher La-Seigna, Jason Lofft, Rachel La-Seigna, Scott Lofft, Rhonda Lofft, Sean La-Seigna, Daniella Clemons, DeVon Dempsey, Olivia Jones, Jamie Lofft and Keith Clemons; and three great-grandchildren, Chance Lofft, Brianna VanAuken and Hadley VanAuken.

He was preceded in death by two siblings, Robert Filkins and Loise Jane Filkins.

His request for cremation has been honored. The family will have a private memorial service at a later date.

EDWIN GAINER

Edwin Gainer, 77, of Kansas City, Kan., died Wednesday, Apr. 27, 2016, at University of Kansas Medical Center.

He was born in White Pine, the son of the late Alfonso and Opal Gainer.

He attended school at Tanner. In 1958, he and his family moved to Kansas. He was a trader for 10 years in DeQueen, Ark. In 1986, he returned to Lane, Kan., to care for his parents. In 1996, he moved to Kansas City due to his health. Ed served in the U.S. Army and was a member of the Masons.

Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Carlene Stambaugh Gainer; one son, Kenneth Gainer of Alexandria, Ind.; three grandchildren, Megan Gainer, Jack Gainer and Cassie Gainer, all of Alexandria; one sister, Leila Morgan of St. Charles, Mo.; one brother, Alfonso “Junior” Gainer of Centerville, Kan.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Burl Bland, Vurl Bland and Jack Gainer, and one sister, Joan Hughes.

Services were held at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home, Paola, Kan.Burial was in Quaker Cemetery, Lane, with military honors.

James Lee Basnett, 64, of Morganton, N.C., died Friday, Apr. 22, 2016.

He was born in Joker, the son of Lucille Basnett and the late Robert Basnett.

He was a 1970 graduate of Calhoun County High School.

Surviving in addition to his mother are his wife of 42 years, Madge Basnett; two sons, Micheal Basnett and Jason Basnett, both of Morganton; six grandsons; one great-grandson; two sisters, Brenda and Debbie Basnett of Grantsville; and two brothers, Robert Basnett of Spencer and Terry Basnett of Zebulon, N.C.

She was born at Akron, Ohio, the daughter of the late Clyde Short and the late Luna Davis Yost.

Surviving are her husband of 58 years, Charles Robert King; two sons, Charles Robert King, Jr., of Doylestown, Ohio, and Clifford R. Velma Faye Norman, 82, of Glenville, died Tuesday, Apr. 26, 2016, at Glenville Care and Rehab Center.

She was born in Calhoun County, the daughter of the late Thomas A. and Edna E. Hardway McCumbers.

She retired from Conrad Motel, Glenville, after 30 years of service. She was a Pentecostal.

Harold Eugene Ritchie, 77, of Five Forks, died Saturday, Apr. 23, 2016, at Camden Clark Medical Center, Parkersburg.

He was born in Grantsville, the son of the late Denver and Mary Sole Ritchie.

He was a 1958 graduate of Calhoun County High School and was employed by Cabot Gas right-of-way maintenance for several years. He later cared for both of his parents.

Dorotha Jean Cramer Turley, 80, of Hurricane, died Sunday, Apr. 24, 2016, at Hubbard Hospice House West, South Charleston.

She was born in Grantsville, the daughter of the late George William “Bill” Cramer and Dortha Juanita Garretson Reese.

She was a 1952 graduate of Calhoun County High School and attended Morris Harvey College, where she was a member of Alpha Omicron Pi Sorority. She retired from W.Va. Dept. of Highways, Material Controls Division. She was an active member in Universityof Charleston Builders Club and University of Charleston Athletic Network. She was a member of the Federation of Democratic Women of Putnam County, had an active role with Putnam County Democratic Club and served on the Putnam County Executive Committee. She was a Christian and a member of First BaptistChurch, Hurricane.

Surviving are one son, Chris Turley; one daughter, Robin Turley; five grandchildren, Leslie Turley, Abbigail and Austin Michels and Ethan and Landon Turley; one sister, Bobbie Buffaloe; and one brother, Bill Cramer, Jr.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Robert “Bob” Turley; two granddaughters, Lori Jo Turley Neubert and Kimberly Alison Turley; step-father, Ira Reese; one sister, Tira Lee Reese; maternal grandparents, Oscar Lee Garretson and Dolly Jane Garretson, who were instrumental in raising her, as well as an uncle, James M. She was born in Grantsville, the daughter of the late Alfred Harley and Liddie Ellen Selmon Wilson.

he was a former employee of Rubber Crafters and BF Goodrich and attended Five Forks Community Church.

Surviving are her husband, Alfred D. Kight; two daughters, Crystal Kendall of Grantsville and Jennifer Nicholas of Big Springs; one son, Dennie Ray Kight of Pleasant Hill; seven grandchildren, Chuck Kendall III, Danielle Kendall, Christopher Kendall, Jarrett Nicholas, Alexander Nicholas, Kayla Kight and Lanaya Kight; two sisters, Flossie McDonald and Betty Westfall; three brothers, Darrell “Pat” Wilson, Doil Westfall and Kenneth Westfall; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her step-father, Lester Westfall, who was the only father she ever knew; one brother, Cherrel “Jack” Wilson; and two sisters, Lois Elaine Wilson and her three-day-old twin, Darlene Mae Wilson.

Herbert Neal Arnold, 81, of Vienna, died Sunday, Apr. 17, 2016, at St. Francis Hospital, Charleston.

He was born in Nicut, the son of the late Roy E. and Alice Marie Knotts Arnold.

He was a U.S. Army veteran, who served in Germany with the 11th Armored Division-Cavalry. He worked at Borg Warner for 27 years and retired from Safety Klean in 1998 after 12 years with the company. He was a member of Porterfield Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Joyce Newell Arnold; three sons, Mark Arnold of St. Louis, Mo., Matthew Arnold of Youngstown, Ohio, and Jon Arnold of Nashville, Tenn.; one daughter, Tammy Whitnable of Vincent, Ohio; eight grandchildren, Ryan Whitnable, Kristen Whitnable, Andrew Arnold, Aaron Arnold, Ben Arnold, Steve Arnold, Lily Arnold and Larry Armes; and one brother, David Edsel Arnold.

He was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Jennifer Arnold; two infant brothers; and one infant sister.

Geraldine Kapustar, 85, of Willoughby, Ohio, died Monday, Apr. 11, 2016.

She was born in Munday and lived in northeast Ohio since 1969.

Surviving are one daughter, Bonnie Phelps of Willoughby; one son, Wayne Farrell of Big Bend; one granddaughter, Charlotte Addison; two great-grandchildren, Amber and Justice; one great-great-grandson, Kingston; and other family members in West Virginia.

ROBERT BLAINE ‘Jack’ CHAPMAN

Robert Blaine “Jack” Chapman, 85, of Glenville, died Wednesday, Apr. 13, 2016, at Minnie Hamilton Health System.

He was born in Braxton County, the son of the late Cecil Ray and Elva Slaughter Chapman.

He attended Braxton County High School and was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of Trace Fork UnitedMethodist Church, Tanner.

Surviving are his wife, Bridgett Skidmore Chapman, whom he married Apr. 21, 1955; four sons, Larry Chapman and wife Amy, Robert Chapman, Daniel Chapman and D. Duane Chapman and wife Julie, all of Glenville; one brother, Donald Chapman and wife Bessie of Gassaway; one sister, Ann Reed of Clarksburg; three grandsons, Thomas, Brett and Jacob Chapman; three granddaughters, Devon, Abby and Sarah Chapman; four great-grandsons; and one great-granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Gene Chapman and Calvin Chapman, and one sister, Elsie Greene.

Services were held at Ellyson Mortuary, Inc., Glenville, with Pastor Jim Huff officiating. Burial was in Meadow Lane Cemetery, Glenville.

Inez Oleta Westfall, 90, of Ivydale, died Wednesday, Apr. 13, 2016, at Clay Health Care.

She was born in Calhoun County, the daughter of the late Eddie and Elma Cadle Coen.

Surviving are two sons, Wayne Westfall of Ivydale and Edsel Westfall of Duck; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg, with Rev. Gene Copen officiating. Burial was in Coen Cemetery.

ETHEL OLEVA MILLER

Ethel Oleva Miller, 101, of Nokesville, Va., formerly of Sand Fork, died Wednesday, Apr. 13, 2016, at Glenville Care and Rehab Center, Glenville.

She was born in Gilmer County, the daughter of the late George and Daisy Beckett Sponaugle.

She was a graduate of Sand Fork High School and Glenville State College. She taught school in Gilmer, Lewis, Calhoun and Harrisoncounties before retiring in 1977. She attended Chapel Springs Assembly of God, Bristow, Va.

Surviving are three sons, Jack Miller and wife Juanita of Nokesville, Jim Miller of Columbus, Ohio, and Joe Miller and wife Darlene of Silver Springs, Fla.; one brother, George Sponaugle of Cedarville; 13 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Warren Miller, on Nov. 1, 1985; one daughter, Charlotte Moneypenny; one infant son, Warren Max Miller; one brother, David Sponaugle; and two sisters, Geneva Stout and Muriel Marshall.

Services will be held Saturday, 2 p.m., at Ellyson Mortuary, Inc., Glenville, with Rev. Kenny Fisher officiating. Burial will be in HineyCemetery, Linn. Visitation will be held Saturday, 1 to 2 p.m., at the mortuary.

THOMAS ‘Tom’ BOWER

Thomas “Tom” Bower, 86, died Monday, Apr. 11, 2016.

He was born in Ritchie County, the son of the late S.F. and Nellie Thomas Bower.

He worked in the tool room/machine shop at Babcock and Wilcox Co., Barberton, Ohio, retiring in 1992 after 44 years of service.

Surviving are one daughter, Jan Householder, and one nephew, Terry Taylor.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Mary Lue Phillips Bower, on Aug. 12, 2013; grandparents, W.W. and Bessie Riggs Bower of Big Bend and C.J. and Geneva Wells Thomas of Joker; and one sister, Carole Taylor.

Ernest Neil “Ernie” Hayhurst, 85, died Thursday, Apr. 7, 2016, after a battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

He was born in Grantsville, the son of the late Herbert and Erless Gherke Hayhurst.

He was a 1949 graduate of Calhoun County High School and served in the U.S. Army from 1952-1955 and was stationed in Germany. He received bachelor’s and master’s degrees at West VirginiaUniversity. He worked as a soil scientist for the Soil Conservation Service under the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture for over 40 years. After retiring from the federal government, he worked for 10 years as a consultant with Soil & Environmental Consultants, PA, in Raleigh, N.C. He had been an active member of St. Raphael the Archangel Catholic Church, Raleigh, since 1976, serving for many years as an Eucharistic minister.

Surviving are his wife of more than 30 years, Samera Saleeby Samia Hayhurst; two brothers, Herbert Gail Hayhurst and wife Raenetta of Bartlett, Ohio, and Carlos Kyle Hayhurst of Washington; one sister, Carolyn Collins of Grantsville; brother-in-law, Paul Vannoy of Mineral Wells; one son, Michael Hayhurst of Youngsville, N.C.; one daughter, Dianne Casson and husband Trip of Wake Forest, N.C.; four step-sons, Robert Samia of Youngsville, Dr. Mark Samia and wife Sharon of Raleigh; and Glenn Samia and wife Gina and Paul Samia and wife Gina, all of Wake Forest; 10 grandchildren, Christina Casson, Arthur Samia, Paul Samia, Jr., Marisa Casson, Richard Samia, Victor Samia, Gracee Samia, Gabrielle Samia, Graham Samia and Isabella Samia.

Jean Stalnaker, 89, of Annamoriah, died Monday, Apr. 11, 2016, after a battle with cancer.

Maxine Muriel Gumm, 79, of Grantsville, died Thursday, Apr. 7, 2016.

She was born in Tanner, the daughter of the late Paris and Gladys Newlon Frymier.

Surviving are four sons, Bill, John, Jim and Rick; six siblings, Reta Stewart, Elaine Perrine, Merceline Bennett, Carolyn Sue Amos, Bill Frymier and Jack Frymier; 13 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Densil P. “Jack” Gumm; one brother, Robert Frymier; and one great-granddaughter, Briella Goodman.

DONALD PATRICK (Brud) McCARTNEY

Donald Patrick (Brud) McCartney, 88, of Normantown, died Tuesday, Apr. 5, 2016, at his home.

He was born in Index, the son of the late Sylvanus and Alice Goff McCartney.

He was one of 19 children that his father had in two families. Being the youngest son, he lived at home and took care of his parents until their deaths. He was a 1946 graduate of Calhoun County High Schooland 1952 graduate of Glenville State College. He served two years in the U.S. Army and in the Army Reserves until 1952. He started teaching school in the one-room school at Snake Root. He taught at CCHS until his retirement in 1983. He was also a farmer. He was a member of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church since age 60. He was also a Gideon and member of American Baptist Men.

Surviving are his wife, LaMoyne Ann Ritchie McCartney; one sister, Myrtle Roberts of Stumptown; four step-sons, Bryan and Jody Ritchie of Winchester, Va.; Bruce and Stacy Ritchie and Blane and Linda Ritchie, all of Marietta, Ohio; and Blake and Amanda Ritchie of Mineral Wells, Ohio; 10 step-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by 12 sisters, Opal Roberts, Dessell Stump, Ella Lambert, Fanny Stump, Gladys Mahaney, Mabel Mahaney, Melva Robinson, Marble Smith, Myrtha Morris, Madeline Engle, Mary Bowe and Margaret Kent; and five brothers, Herldon McCartney, Kester McCartney, Loren McCartney, Hunter McCartney and Sull McCartney.

Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg, with Rev. John Vannoy officiating. Burial was held in Bethlehem Cemetery, near Grantsville.

JANICE ELAINE SPRACKLIN YEAKLEY

Janice Elaine Spracklin Yeakley, 80, of Normantown, died Thursday, Mar. 31, 2016, at Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown.

She was born in Iowa, the daughter of the late Ivan and Florence Nick Spracklin.

She formerly lived in Reading, Pa.

Surviving are three children, Willian Ohlinger of Normantown, Fredrick Ohlinger of Henryville, Pa., and Crissa Ohlinger of Morgantown, Pa.; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

DORIS GAY WEAVER GRIFFITH

Doris Weaver Griffith, 83, died Thursday, Mar. 31, 2016, in Lancaster, S.C.

She was born in Grantsville, the daughter of Frank D. Weaver and Mabel Rothwell Weaver.

She was a 1952 graduate of Calhoun County High School and was an active member of Trinity Presbyterian Church, Van Wyck, S.C. Her and her late husband Ron were active in the Gideon’s for over 30 years. She served as state president of the Gideon’s Auxiliary in the early 1980s.

Surviving are one son, Pastor Mark Patrick Griffith; daughter-in-law, Elizabeth McKoy Griffith; one granddaughter, Hannah Griffith; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by four brothers, Ernest Weaver, Lauren Weaver, Delbert Weaver and Donald Weaver, and one infant sister, Virginia Elizabeth Weaver.

A celebration of her faith and life will be held Saturday, 11 a.m., at Trinity Presbyterian Church, Van Wyck, with Rev. Dieter Paulson presiding. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Gideon’s International, P.O. Box 1302, Lancaster, SC 29721.

CLUSTER ‘Cub’ COEN

Cluster F. “Cub” Coen, 90, of Creston, Ohio, died Thursday, Mar. 24, at Wooster Community Hospital.

He was born in Mudfork, the son of the late Everett and Esther White Coen.

He served in the United States Army during World War II. He retired from PCA, Rittman, Ohio, after 37 years.

Surviving are his wife, Ora McClain Coen, whom he married July 12, 1945; one son, Jerry Coen; one daughter, Judy Coen; one granddaughter, Dr. Barbara Gordon; two great-grandchildren, Matthew and Madeline; and one sister, Norma Marshall.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Lester and Frank, and one sister, Bonnie.

Graveside services were held at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens, with Pastor Steve Carter officiating.

JOHN DAWSON

John E. Dawson, 91, of Parkersburg, died Sunday, Apr. 3, 2016, at Worthington Manor Nursing Home.

He was born in Annamoriah, the son of the late David Kelsey and Scottie Dawson.

He was a 1943 graduate of Calhoun County High School and served in the U.S. Army during World War II and participated in the Battle of the Bulge. He graduated from Glenville State College and taught elementary school in Calhoun County until retiring after 30 years of teaching. He was a Christian and had attended Edgelawn UnitedMethodist Church.

Surviving are his wife of 68 years, Mayme Parrill Dawson, whom he married Apr. 18, 1947; one daughter, Sandra Sullivan and husband Thomas of Washington; one son, Rick Dawson and wife Wanda of Parkersburg; four granddaughters, Mary Tinnel, Lisa Roberts, Vicki Lemon and Ann Lambert; nine great-grandsons, Aidan, Carrick and Truman Roberts, Nicholas and Jacob Lemon, Tristen and Conner Tinnel and Elliot and Seth Lambert; and two sisters, Edna Mason of Jacksonville, Ill., and Carolyn Elza of Parkersburg.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Glen Dawson.

Patricia Lee-Ann Huffman, one month old infant, of Spencer, died Sunday, Mar. 27, 2016, at Charleston Area Medical Center.

She was the daughter of Tiffany Huffman of Spencer.

Surviving in addition to her mother are two sisters, Hanna Nicole Knight and Heaven Ann Huffman; one brother, Scotty Lynn Knight; aunts, Missy and Patty; maternal grandmother, Anna Huffman; and maternal great-grandmother, Madilene Starkey.

MARY ANNE FRANCIS YOKE

Mary Anne Francis Yoke, 94, of Grantsville, died Monday, Mar. 28, 2016, at Minnie Hamilton Health System.

She was the daughter of the late James and Martha Criss and adopted daughter of the late Hagan and Bertha Francis.

She and her husband operated Francis Hardware, Grantsville, for many years. She taught many local youths piano out of her home, including her grandsons. She played piano for a short time while residing at Eagle Pointe Nursing Home.

Surviving are two sisters, Betty Ann Wilcox of Vienna and Joann Fisher of Charleston, S.C.; one daughter, Rhonda Diane Yoak of Walker; three grandsons, Tracy West and wife Melissa, Travis West of Walker and Torey and Sherry Yoak of Benson, N.C.; two great-grandsons, Zachary West of Orma and Elijah Yoak of Benson; one great-great-granddaughter, Chevelle West of Elizabeth; several cousins; and special friend, Sheryl Wilson.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Roland Leon “Big” Yoke; one brother, James Criss; and one granddaughter-in-law, Brandy Tanner West.

Gary Ted Freed, 65, of Brohard, died Tuesday, Mar. 29, 2016.

He was the son of the late Ted Freed and Ruby Goodnight.

He was a member of Labors Union Local 1085, Parkersburg, since 1977.

Surviving are one son, Gary Alex Freed of Parkersburg; one daughter, April Freed of Parkersburg; six grandchildren, Sherridan Freed, Darius Anderson, Dominique Anderson, Tristen Freed, Izeabella Freed and Ellianna Freed; three sisters, Diane Stevens, Helen Belt and Patricia Metz; and one brother, Denzil Goodnight.

He was preceded in death by seven brothers and sisters, Phyllis Mahan, Shirley Ray Goodnight, Jerald Goodnight, Sandra Arthur, Roy Goodnight, Delores Jones and Robert Goodnight.

Roy C. Rucker, 72, of Cottageville, died Thursday, Mar. 24, 2016, atCAMC Memorial Hospital.

He was the son of the late Roy and Mary Catherine Hunt Rucker.

He retired from Teamsters Local #175, was a member of Simmons Creek United Christian Church and attended Cottageville UnitedMethodist Church for many years.

Surviving are his wife, Connie Rucker; one daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Danny Medford of Bedford, Ky.; three step-sons and wives, Roy and Sandi Bennett of Efland, N.C., Jr. and Amy Bennett of Big Bend and Jason and Lisa Bennett of Charleston; five grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; three sisters, Mary Gail Campbell of Elkhart, Ind., Elva Kozak of Jacksonville, Fla., and Juanita Parsons of Decatur, Tenn.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Joyce Perry.

OVAL RAY BADGETT

Oval Ray Badgett, 82, of Milton Township, Ohio, died Sunday, Mar. 13, 2016, at his home.

He was born in Minnora, the son of the late Greely and Maysel Jarvis Badgett.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and member of First Church of God, Newton Falls, Ohio. He retired in 1999 after 21 years as an autoworker at General Motors, Lordstown, Ohio.

Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Janet Soos Badgett, whom he married on Oct. 20, 1956; two daughters, Laurel Novotny of Newton Falls and Tammy Jorgensen of Cortland, Ohio; two sons, Stephen Badgett of Berlin Center, Ohio, and Rodney Badgett of Canfield, Ohio; one sister, Carol Graybill of Roanoke, Va.; one brother, Loy Badgett of Minnora; four grandchildren, Mikayla Jorgensen, Jarrod Badgett, Adam Badgett and Amanda Badgett; and two step-grandchildren, Jeremy Dreger and Zach Toroschik.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Oeta Davis, and one brother, Randall Badgett.

Services were held at James Funeral Home, Newton Falls. He was buried in Newton Falls Cemetery.

Junior Earl Ferrell, 59, of Sanford, N.C., died, Monday, Mar. 14, 2016, at his home.

He was born in Calhoun County, the son of the late Dewey Earl Ferrell and Maxine Sidwell Ferrell.

He served in the Army Reserves and worked in building construction.

Surviving are his fiancée, Roxanne Lois Morgan; three daughters, Joellen Deutschle of Killbuck, Ohio, Jessica Ferrell of Wooster, Ohio, and Hannah Whitman of Coshocton, Ohio; seven brothers, Dewey Carl Ferrell and Joe Ferrell, both of Creston, Calvin Ferrell of Parkersburg, Gary Ferrell of Nobe, Larry Ferrell of Spencer, Alvin Ferrell of Big Bend and Albert Ferrell of Munday; four sisters, Loretta Bell and Darlene Ulderich, both of Grantsville, Kathirn Bunner of Munday and Beretta Ferrell of Russett; six grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

David Martin Van Buren, 99, of Rosedale, died Tuesday, Mar. 15, 2016, at his home.

He was born in Braxton County, the daughter of the late George and Sophia Putnam Van Buren.

He was a World War II veteran, an equipment operator for W.Va. Dept. of Highways, and a farmer and timberman.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mabel Van Buren; two brothers, Albert Van Buren and Donald Nelson Van Buren; seven sisters, Flossie Hardway, Ethel Morris, Edna Nicholas, Hollie Abersold, Audra Bourne, Gertrude Bennett and Fannie Alkire; one son, Paul Van Buren; one granddaughter, Sharon Rose White; and one great-grandson, Chandler Canterbury.

Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg, with Pastor Kenneth Tanner officiating. Burial was in Mill Fork Cemetery, Rosedale.

MARY LOU RINEHART SMITH

Mary Lou Rinehart Smith, 71, of Napier, died Sunday, Mar. 13, 2016, at United Hospital Center, Bridgeport.

She was born in Calhoun County, the daughter of the late Deco Rinehart and Audrey Keith Rinehart.

She was a homemaker and a member of Newton Methodist Church. She attended Tichenal Methodist Church, Heaters. She was a 50-year member of Order of Eastern Star, Linden Chapter 152. She was co-owner of Smith’s Hillbilly Store, which was known for its ice cream. She had volunteered for Flatwoods Elementary School and served as PTA president.

Surviving are her husband of 52 years, Charles A. Smith; three daughters, Pamela Jo Baker, Connie Sue Gwynn and Linda Darlene Perkins; five grandchildren, Jennifer “Punkie” Perrine, John Cameron, Nathan Gwynn, Sienna Gwynn and Garrett Perkins; one step-grandson, Dylan Gwynn; one sister, Marlene Conley; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Deco Rinehart, Jr.

Bernadean Shannon Braham, 88, of Parkersburg, died Wednesday, Mar. 9, 2016, at Camden Clark Medical Center.

She was born in Calhoun County, the daughter of the late George and Maude Greathouse Norman.

She retired from Nelson’s Drug Store and was a member of SouthParkersburg Baptist Church.

Surviving are her husband, Harold L. Braham; one son, John E. Braham of Indiana; one daughter, Doris Atkinson of Parkersburg; one foster daughter, Connie of Virginia; six grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, John M. Braham; one brother, William Norman; and six sisters, Ola Sims, Sadie Hemingway, Della Jones, Maggie Richards, Pearl Richards and Dorothy Gant.

Olonee “Snooks” Harpold, 93, of Belpre, Ohio, died Sunday, Mar. 6, 2016, at her home.

She was born in Calhoun County, the daughter of the late French C. and Hetta F. Starcher Eismon.

She was a member of River Hill U.M. Church and was a day care worker. She was a member of South Parkersburg Women’s Club.

Surviving are two sons, James “Jim” Harpold of Lowell, Ohio, and Erman Clair Harpold, Jr., of Parkersburg; two daughters, Deloris J. Flinn of Belpre, Ohio, and Lora Lee Hardman of Lake Washington; one sister, Nell “Tiny” Boso of Lubeck; nine grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Erman Clair Harpold; one brother, Carleton Eismon; two sisters, Ilene Stratton and Pauline Rose; and two great-grandsons.

H. Wayne Freshour, 77, of Gandeeville, died Saturday, Mar. 5, 2016, at Camden-Clark Medical Center, Parkersburg.

He was born in Calhoun County, the son of the late Lora and Thelma Ruth Miller Freshour.

He was a U.S. Army veteran and was a school bus driver, truck driver and driver for Roane County Emergency Squad. He volunteered for Gandeeville-Harmony Volunteer Fire Dept.

Surviving are nieces and nephews, Ruth Ann, Allen, Nancy and Kelly; great-nieces and nephews, James, Willard, Laura and Stephen; one brother, William Freshour; one granddaughter, Dreama Freshour; and one step-granddaughter, Mackenzie.

He was preceded in death by one son, Mark Freshour; two grandsons; one brother, Willard; one sister, Louverna; and one niece, Lora Lynn.

Malissa Ann Swift, 36, of Charleston, died Sunday, Mar. 6, 2016, at her home.

She was born in Cleveland, Ohio, the daughter of Debbie Ann Swift and the late Kerry Lance Swift, Sr.

RICHARD ‘Mac’ McCORMACK

Richard L. “Mac” McCormack, 85, of Lorain, Ohio, died Tuesday, Mar. 1, 2016, at his residence.

He was born in Montgomery, the son of the late Billie and Mabel Smitson McCormack.

He was a 1949 graduate of Calhoun County High School and attended Akron University and Lorain County Community College. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps in the early 1950s and later in the U.S. Army Reserves. He was a police officer in Lorain for 43 years, retiring in 2000. He was a member of St. Frances Xavier Cabrini Catholic Parish, Lorain, Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #3, Lofton Henderson Marine Corp League, Amvets Post 20, Disabled American Veterans Louis, Paul Proy Chapter 20, where he served with the honor guard, American Association of Law Enforcement Trainers, U.S. Judo Federation, International Judo Federation and Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt Federation. In August of 2000, he received the U.S. Marshal Arts Instructor of the Year award. He was recipient of the Policeman of the Year Award in 1980.

Surviving are his wife, Patricia Sposato McCormack; two daughters, Deborah L. McCormack and Tamara J. McCormack, both of Lorain; two sons, John F. of Columbus, Ohio, and Terence of Lorain; seven grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Luther.

Marvin Lee Starcher, 78, of Mt. Zion, died Saturday, Feb. 27, 2016, at Marietta Memorial Hospital, Marietta, Ohio.

He was born in Calhoun County, the son of Virginia Bailey Starcher and the late Clayton Starcher.

He was a 1955 graduate of Calhoun County High School. He served in the U.S. Navy, worked several years in Ohio as a master electrician, taught electricity at Roane-Jackson Technical Center and retired from teaching at Calhoun-Gilmer Career Center. He was a member of Prudence Chapel United Methodist Church, Minnora.

Surviving in addition to his mother are his wife, Joy Marie Shaffer Starcher, and two nephews, Michael LaFleur and David LaFleur of Kanawha County.

He was a U.S. Army veteran and retired from City Iron & Metal as a crane operator.

Young of Moxahala, Ohio, and Ronald Tyson II of Gallipolis, Ohio; 14 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Goldie Rush of Orma and Effie Mae Wallbrown of Crummies Creek; and one brother, Shirley Cottrell of Amboy, Ind.

He was preceded in death by two wives, Geraldine F. Carpenter Cottrell and Mary L. Potts Cottrell; one step-daughter; one step-grandson; and eight brothers and sisters.

Fred A. Layman, Jr., 40, of Ellenboro, died Tuesday, Feb. 23, 2016, in a worksite accident in Marion County.

He was born at Dover Air Force Base, Dover, Delaware, the son of Fred and Barbara Layman of Vienna.

He was a 1994 graduate of Parkersburg High School. He worked for Ronald Lane, Inc., as a directional bore operator for more than 20 years. He attended Spruce Grove United Methodist Church.

Surviving in addition to his parents are his wife of 15 years, Christina Renee Layman, three sons, Tyler Keith and Brady Shane, both of Ellenboro, and Thomas Meunier of Marietta, Ohio; one daughter, Sophie Renee of Ellenboro; one sister, Amy Gilbert of Belpre, Ohio; two nephews, Hunter and Cooper Gilbert; mother-in-law, Elaine Boston of Harrisville; father-in-law, Johnnie Lee Boston of Pennsboro; one sister-in-law, Amanda Trypanis of Martinsburg; grandmother, Jerldene Leasure of Vienna; and several aunts and uncles.

She was the daughter of the late Howard and Vena Westfall Knotts.

She was a 1944 graduate of Calhoun County High School. She was a beautician for 23 years and she was a member of Order of Eastern Star.

John Ware Brinson, Jr., 71, of Orma, died Friday, Feb. 19, 2016, at Charleston Area Medical Center.

He was born in Greenville, S.C., the son of the late John Ware Brinson, Sr., and Elizabeth Mae Alexander Brinson.

He was a 1962 graduate of White Hall High School, where he was a member of the basketball team. He joined the United States Navy in 1962 and managed not to step foot on a boat during his 20 years of service. He flew over 7,000 hours on the P-3C Orion aircraft and retired as a Chief Aviation Antisubmarine Warfare Technician in 1982. He taught himself to program computers and built a handheld computer business that served the logging and lumber industry in nine states. He was a member of Appalachian Blacksmith Association, New River Forge Council, and PAADA.

Surviving are his wife of 45 years, Tina Brinson; two sons, David Brinson and wife Dani Brinson and Kerry Fishel and wife Corey Koch-Fishel; two daughters, Dana Brinson and wife Kris Snyder and Jessie Brinson; and four grandchildren, Zachary and Abigail Brinson and John-Emery and Josie Fishel.

PHYLLIS RUTH HANLIN BUTLER

Phyllis Ruth Hanlin Butler, 90, of Normantown, died Friday, Feb. 19, 2016, at Minnie Hamilton Health System.

She was born in Elkview, the daughter of the late P.A. and Nellie Dye Hanlin.

She graduated from Tanner High School in 1943 and moved to Elyria. She married Waldo J. Butler in 1944. She graduated from KentState University in 1968 and taught school in South Amherst and Crestwood School, Elyria. She retired from Crestwood in 1991. She was a lifetime member of Ohio Retired Teachers Association and member of Lorain County Retired Teachers Association. She was also a member of The Church of the Open Door, Elyria.

Surviving are two sons, Larry G. Butler of Normantown and Kenneth L. Butler of Plymouth, Mich.; two sisters, Fern Coberly of Glenview and Lois Phillips of Meridian, Idaho; six grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, six great-great-grandchildren, and many nephews and nieces.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Waldo J. Butler, in 1976; one sister, Donna Whiting of Glenville; four brothers, Bruce Hanlin ofEdmond, Okla., Paul Hanlin of Wellington, Ohio, Carl Hanlin of New Orleans, La., and Dale Hanlin of Barberton, Ohio.

Evon Jarvis, 53, of Chloe, formerly a resident of Caldwell, Ohio, died Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2016, at Minnie Hamilton Health System.

She was born in West Virginia, the daughter of Virginia McCumbers and the late Harold McCumbers, and was one of 14 children.

Surviving in addition to her mother are two daughters, Crystal Jarvis Michael and Tiffany Jarvis McDonald; three grandchildren, Bradley Michael, Brooklyn Michael and Austin McDonald; and husband, Roger Jarvis, whom she married in March 2007.

He was a 1964 graduate of Calhoun County High School and retired Apr. 12, 2002, as a buffer for Akron Brass after 35 years of service. He was a member of Wooster and Loundonville Eagles clubs, Loudonville American Legion, Wooster Moose Club, and Perrysville VFW.

Surviving are his wife, Bonnie Huffman Alfred, whom he married on Mar. 10, 1984; children, Brian Alfred, Keith Alfred, Adam Long and Amber Johns, all of Wooster, Ohio; Jeffrey Alfred and Wilma Wilson, both of Dalton, Ohio, and Adam Alfred of Creston, Ohio; grandchildren Tyler, Hannah, Emma and Mallory Alfred and Alexis and Allie Long; two sisters, Doris McElvey of Naples, Fla., and Sally Grizzard of Dover, Tenn.; one sister-in-law, Nancy Alfred of Orrville, Ohio; two brothers-in-law, Chuck Huffman of Wooster and Jim Huffman of Shelby, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Elizabeth Grace Alfred, and one brother, Jimmy Alfred.

Harlan Hal Simmons, 79, of Parkersburg, died Saturday, Jan. 30, 2016, at Parkersburg Care Center.

He was born in Calhoun County, the son of the late Oria B. and Wilma M. Whipkey Simmons.

He was a U.S. Army veteran and served in Vietnam. He traveled the U.S. selling steel building dealerships, among many other types of businesses.

Surviving are one daughter, Patricia E. Simmons of Parkersburg; two sons, Harlan H. Simmons, Jr., of Marietta, Ohio, and Kevin B. Simmons of Parkersburg; 15 grandchildren, including, Daniel Ray Bush II, Keri Laftch and Jessica and Josh Simmons; four brothers, Oria Blain, Jr., Larry Gay, Mickey Jo and Rickey Lee; five sisters, Ina Evelyn, Linda Sue, Lois Ann, Shirley Louise and Jessica Louise; the mother of his children, Evelyn Louise Simmons Science; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Mildred Simmons; one son, Kevin Blaine “Jesse James” Simmons; three brothers, James Carol, Wayne Morgan and Howard; and one sister, Alberta.

He donated his body to the W.Va. Human Gift Registry, Morgantown. Private family service will be held at a later date.

Erma L. Lee, 89, of Elizabeth, died Sunday, Jan. 31, 2016, at Camden Clark Medical Center.

She was the daughter of the late L. Earnest and Edith Knight Marshall.

She was a graduate of Wirt County High School and Mountain StateBusiness College. She worked for Dr. R.W. Coplen for many years and later for W.Va. DHHR, Grantsville. She was a member of Elizabeth Baptist Church.

Surviving are one daughter, Kay Miller of Washington, and two granddaughters, Kim Fulton of Mineral Wells and Lori O’Pry of Houston, Tex.

She was preceded in death by her husband, W. Frank Lee.

At her request, there will be no visitation. Private graveside service will be held at a later date at Bethlehem Cemetery, near Grantsville.

LESTER BISHOP

Lester Bishop, 86, of Sutton, died Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2016, at UnitedHospital Center, Clarksburg.

He was born in Rosedale, the son of the late Lewis and Ursla Dobbins Bishop.

He was a musician.

Surviving are his wife, Wanda Bishop of Sutton; two brothers, Chester Bishop and Edward Bishop, both of Sutton; and one sister, Hazel Brown of Sutton.

He was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters.

Deborah Kay Dulan Blosser Cunningham, 59, of Smithville, died Monday, Jan. 25, 2016, due to an unexpected illness.

Surviving are her husband of 26 years, David Cunningham; one son, Johnny Ray Blosser and wife Eve Parsons Blosser and their children, Cody, Courtney, Rayanna, Breanna and Wyatt Blosser, all of Grantsville, and April and Racheal Blosser of Parkersburg; three step-children, Mark Cunningham of Flatwoods, Steven Cunningham of Virginia and Robin Roberts of Parkersburg; 23 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two grandchildren whom Debbie and Dave were raising, Franklin and Kiara Cunningham of Smithville.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Edith Eileen Dulan Starcher; father, Lawrence Starcher; step-father, Arthur Cub Ledsome; four children, Helen, Bill, Kathy and Paul Blosser; three grandchildren, Tiffany N. Blosser and two stillborn; and her first husband, John B. Blosser.

Services were held at Matheny Whited Funeral Home, Elizabeth. Burial was in Big Springs Cemetery.

LOUISE WISEMAN VILLERS

Louise Wiseman Villers, 83, died Monday, Jan. 25, 2016, at her parsonage residence at Handley.

She was born in Irvine, Ky., the daughter of the late Arch and Lulu Wiseman.

She was first introduced to Jesus when her parents took her to First Church of God, Irvine. She was a graduate of Irvine High School and attended three semesters at Anderson Indiana Church of God College. She was employed by Wirt County board of education as a teacher’s aide for 33 years, and was a public assistance worker for Kentucky Dept. of Welfare in the 1960s. She assisted her husband in their American Baptist Ministries at Greenbrier Baptist Church, Wagersville, Ky.; Adda Baptist Church, Hurricane; Rush Run Baptist Church, Stumptown; Strait Creek Baptist Church, Brohard; Mt. William Baptist Church, Blue Goose; Two Ripple Baptist Church, Elizabeth; and Handley Baptist Church.

Surviving are her husband of 53 years, Lewis Villers; one daughter, Ladonna Hayes of Elizabeth; one son, Jonathan Villers of Philippi; one sister, Wilma Wiseman Horn of Irvine; one brother, Arthur Wieman of Lexington, Ky.; six grandchildren, Chasity Sions of Kingwood, Kayla Amerson of Grand Rapids, Mich., and Caleb Villers, Allison Villers, Thomas Villers and Bobby Villers, all of Philippi; six great-grandchildren, Miriam Sions, Hannah Sions and Eli Sions, all of Kingwood, and Colton Amerson, Layne Amerson and Lysle Amerson, all of Grand Rapids; and several “adopted” children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Russell Wiseman ofIrvine, on Apr. 12, 2012.

Services were held at O’Dell Funeral Home, Montgomery, with Rev. Chester Bird, Rev. Alfred Boyd, Rev. James Baldwin and Rev. Philip Walton officiating, and at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Rev. John Vannoy officiating. Burial was in Villers FamilyCemetery, Little Creek.

GLADYS FORSHEY

Gladys Forshey, 78, of Waverly, died Saturday, Jan. 23, 2016, at Willows Center, Parkersburg.

She was born in Calhoun County, the daughter of the late David and Corene Jarvis Hicks.

She was a press operator at American Bisque/American China and was a cook for many years at Highway Grill.

Surviving are five daughters, Ann Davis, Phyllis Wright and her companion Pat Elder, Brenda Wolfe, Karen Riffle and Judy Piersol; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Dorothy Duncan and Glennis Blevins; one sister-in-law, Wilma Jarvis; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dale Forshey; three brothers, Dallas Jarvis, Eugene Hicks and Charles Hicks; one sister, Janice Forshey; and two great-granddaughters, Madison Davis and Savannah Wolfe.

Services were scheduled Wednesday, 2 p.m., at Ingram Funeral Home, St. Marys, with Pastor Mark Mayfield officiating, and burial in Willow Island Cemetery. Visitation was scheduled Wednesday, 1 to 2 p.m., at the funeral home.

TOMMY FREED

Tommy Freed, 57, of Looneyville, died Saturday, Jan. 23, 2016, at his home.

He was born at Grantsville, the son of the late Dallas Freed and the late Hazel Richards Freed Gribble.

He was a laborer.

Surviving are his fiancée, Kandie Sampson of Looneyville; two step-sons, Lance Nichols and Brian Nichols, both of Michigan; one sister, Deborah Bush of Grantsville; and two brothers, Pete Freed of Millstone and Steve Gribble of Grantsville.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Kathy Howell, and his step-father, Glen Gribble.

HOLLY STARCHER

Holly D. Starcher, 79, of Mt. Zion, died Monday, Jan. 18, 2016, at Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown.

He was born at Hur, the son of the late Grover Cleveland and Rose Jane Adams Starcher.

He was a lifelong resident of Calhoun County and a member of HurCommunity Church.

Surviving are four sons, Marvin Starcher and Ronnie Starcher, both of Mt. Zion, Cleveland Starcher and wife Cindy of Parkersburg and Dewayne Starcher of Grantsville; two daughters, Brenda Starcher of Mt. Zion and Janet Gherke and husband Craig of Grantsville; one sister, Lula Hughes of Creston; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lena E. Starcher, in 2007; three sisters, Hazel Hughes, Lucy Bollinger and Goldie Greathouse; and one brother, Thomas Henry Starcher.

Services were held at Hur Community Church, with Rev. Jim McIntyre and Rev. Delmas Stutler officiating. Burial was in StarcherFamily Cemetery, Mt. Zion.

GERALDINE JAMISON BOGGS

E. Geraldine Jamison Boggs, 91, of St. Marys, died Thursday, Jan. 14, 2016, at her residence.

She was born in Sutton, the daughter of the late Earl and Bertha Jamison.

She was a “Rosie the Riveter.” She was a member of Temple BaptistChurch, Greensburg, Ohio, and attended Cow Creek MethodistChurch, St. Marys.

Surviving are four daughters, Dianne Texter of Akron, Ohio, Janice Hughes of Frametown, Sharlene Heiney of Grantsville and Donna Bunner of St. Marys; three sons, Wayne Boggs of Akron, Dwight Boggs of North Port, Fla., and Duane Boggs of St. Marys; 18 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; 11 step-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Virgil I. Boggs; two sisters; and two brothers.

Services were held at Greene-Robertson Funeral Home, Sutton, with Pastor David Chapman officiating. Burial was in Bug RidgeCommunity Cemetery, near Sutton.

JOSEPH BRAXTON McKINNEY

Joseph Braxton McKinney, 78, of Grantsville, died Saturday, Jan. 2, 2016.

He was a U.S. Marine veteran.

Surviving are one daughter, Jody Giordano, and two granddaughters, Nicole James and Sarah Giordano.

WILLIAM ERIC FRANKLIN

William Eric Franklin, 32, of Decatur, Ill., died Friday, Jan. 8, 2016.

He was born in Decatur, the son of Kathie A. Starcher Franklin Fuiten and the late William J. Franklin.

He owned and operated “Will Move You” business and was also a painter for Trinity Industrial Towers, a manufacturer of windmills. He was a member of Camp Wilson Foursquare Church, Harristown, Ill.

Surviving in addition to his mother are his step-father, Kenlie Fuiten; two sons, Spencer and Leyton; one sister, Melissa Gillespie and husband Sean; one brother, Stephen Franklin and wife Holly; his grandmother, Karin Zinders; soul mate, Jenni Hibbard; one niece, Chelsea; two nephews, Sean Jr. and Mason; one step-sister, Kenna Garnica and husband Steve of Roscoe, Ill.; and one step-brother, Dayne Fuiten.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his grandparents, Lambert and Ruby Starcher, William and Mae Franklin and Ted Zinders.

ROBERT LEON KERBY

Robert Leon Kerby, 83, of Pickerington, Ohio, died Wednesday, Jan. 13, 2016, at Wesley Ridge, Reynoldsburg, Ohio.

He was born in Annamoriah, the son of the late Holly G. and Elizabeth Gibson Kerby.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War and was retired from Babcock & Wilcox with 42 years of service.

Surviving are one daughter, Deborah Miller of Pickerington; two granddaughters, Stephanie Clark and Jennifer Miller; three step-great-grandchildren, Graham, Grace and Olivia Clark, all of Pickerington; one brother, Foster Kerby of Spencer; one sister-in-law, Phyllis Kerby of Hur; two brothers-in-law, Rev. Gene Kerby of Oak Hill, Ohio, and Rev. Harold Duskey of Summersville; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Laurine Kirby Kerby, in 2014; four sisters, Pauline Duskey, Marie Kerby, Sue Kerby and Linda Kerby; and one brother, William C. Kerby.

Services were held at Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, South Parkersburg. Burial was in Mt. Zion Cemetery, Mineral Wells, with military honors.

ROBERT DEWANE HUSK

Robert Dewane Husk, 77, of Parkersburg, died Friday, Jan. 8, 2016, at Camden Clark Medical Center.

He was born in Calhoun County, the son of the late Ernest Ray and Jessie E. Bell Husk.

He was a U.S. Army veteran and was retired from Bureau of Public Debt.

Surviving are one step-daughter, Wendy Gibson Mills of Brohard; one step-son, Brian Gibson of Vienna; and one granddaughter, Rachel Ann Gibson of Vienna.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Eyvonne Jean Husk.

Services were held at Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, South Parkersburg, with Rev. Greg Markins officiating. Burial was in Sunset Memory Gardens.

JASON CHANCE GROSSMANN

Jason Chance Grossmann, 42, of Glenville, died Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2016, at Charleston Area Medical Center, General Division.

He was born in Newton, N.J., the son of Steven P. Grossmann of Bradenton, Fla., and Elizabeth K. Setty of Glenville.

He attended Glenville State College after serving in the U.S. Army, where he was stationed in Virginia, Missouri, Bosnia, and Hanau, Germany. He cooked at Days Inn of Flatwoods, Stonewall Jackson Resort, Pioneer Grill, and Rusty Musket at GSC.

Surviving in addition to his parents are his grandmothers, Kathryn E. Setty of Xenia, Ohio, and Jean Grossmann of Bradenton, Fla.; one sister, Kathryn Woodford and husband Ronald of Harrisville; one niece, Amanda K. Hogan and husband Mark; three nephews, Jesse Alborano, Louis Alborano and Joshua Woodford; and significant other, Christine Smith of Normantown.

He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Delmis Setty and Ralph Grossmann.

Graveside service was held in Three Poplar Cemetery, Holt Run Road, Glenville, with Rev. Joe Seely officiating.

 

ADIE KATHRYN ‘Tiny’ CUNNINGHAM

Sadie Kathryn “Tiny” Cunningham, 77, of Pleasant Hill, died Saturday, Jan. 2, 2016, at Miletree, Spencer.

She was born in Calhoun County, the daughter of the late Desimon and Maggie Norman Richards.

She was a homemaker.

Surviving are one daughter, Iris (Kathryn) Stutler and husband Terry of Barberton, Ohio; one son, Steven Cunningham and wife Carolyn of Pleasant Hill; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two brothers; and one sister.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ivan Foster Cunningham; one daughter, Mildred (Penny) Cunningham; two brothers; and three sisters.

DARLENE KAY OWENS ROBERTS

Darlene Kay Owens Roberts, 61, of Parkersburg, died Saturday, Jan. 2, 2016, at Camden Clark Medical Center, Parkersburg.

She was born in Grantsville, the daughter of the late Joshua Sewell and Minnie F. Bower Owens.

She was a 1973 graduate of Calhoun County High School. She spent the last 35 years working for the Wood County Magistrate Court and the Bureau of Public Debt. She was a member of Grace BaptistChurch and played old time Stamps-Baxter hymns on the piano.

Surviving are her husband of 38 years, Larry M. Roberts; one son, Kenneth Michael Roberts of Ormond Beach, Fla.; four brothers, Joshua Owens, Jr., of Ravenswood, George Owens of Sunbury, Ohio, and Ronald Owens and Charles Owens, both of Parkersburg; and three sisters, Greta Richards and Joyce Roberts, both of Grantsville, and Carolyn Preston of Belpre, Ohio.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Ottmer Owens and Woodrow Owens; three sisters, Vonda Wiedenhoft, Norma Jean Godfrey and her twin Sharlene Sadler; and one special niece, Vicki Owens.
