Ray H. Cunningham, 88, of Elizabeth, died Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2004, at his residence.
He was born in Calhoun County, the son of the late Curtis and Sophia Jane Greathouse Cunningham.
He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, was a member of Farm Bureau, attended Burning Springs U.M. Church, and retired from Hope Gas Co. with 29 years of service.
Surviving are his wife, Hallie Mollohan Cunningham; one son, Joseph Cunningham of Elizabeth; two daughters, Sonja Artibise of New Orleans, La., and Shelia Goldizen of Liberty; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one brother, Ralph Cunningham of Little Hocking, Ohio; and one sister, Dollie Shrader of Parkersburg.
He was preceded in death by one son, Jerry Cunningham; brothers and sisters, Roy, Russell, Pearl, Shirley, Maggie and Effie; and one grandchild.
Services were held at Busch-Kimes Funeral Home, Elizabeth, with Pastor Kenneth Welch and Paul Williams officiating. Burial was in Beatty Cemetery.

Leah Chenoweth Deusing, 86, of Warner Robins, Ga., formerly of Nicut, died Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004.
Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg, with Rev. Carl Marks officiating. Burial was in Fairview Cemetery, Lower Nicut.
TESSELENE POWELL
Tesselene R. Powell of Parkersburg died Friday, Jan. 9, 2004, at St. Joseph’s Hospital.
She was born in Munday, the daughter of the late Carmel Clay and Edith Rose Newell.
She was a homemaker and a Southern Baptist.
Surviving are four sons, Russell Parker and Roger Parker, both of Frederick, Md., and Randall Parker and Donald Powell, both of Parkersburg; one daughter, Sandy Groover of Fort Wayne, Ind.; 13 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one brother, Jack Newell of Munday.
She was preceded in death by one son, Richard Parker.
By her request, there was no visitation or services.
VIRGINIA PARSONS
Virginia K. Parsons, 89, of Parkersburg, died Sunday, Jan. 11, 2004, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital.
She was born in Jackson County, the daughter of the late Alvinzie and Flora McCrady Parsons.
Surviving are three sons, Perry J. Wilson and Carl E. Wilson, both of Parkersburg, and Roger Wilson and wife Donna of Big Bend; one daughter, Ruth Starcher of Ohio; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and two brothers, Clella “Pat” Parsons of Martinsburg and Stewart Parsons of Front Royal, Va.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John P. Parsons, in 1984; three sons; one grandson; three brothers, Otha, Jesse and Oshel Parsons; and one sister, Belva E. Lowe.
Services were held at Leavitt Funeral Home, Parkersburg, with burial in Goodnight Cemetery, Calhoun County.
GENE COLLINS
Gene L. Collins, 70, of Cutler, Ohio, died Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004, at Ohio State University Medical Center, Columbus, Ohio.
He was born in Calhoun County, the son of the late Madge Hammer Dye and Howard L. Collins.
He was a retired truck driver and operated a cattle farm at Cutler and also G&C Water Hauling. He was a Christian and attended Bible Baptist Church, Bartlett, Ohio, and Decatur Chapel, Decatur, Ohio.
Surviving are his wife of 28 years, Carol; three sons, Larry, Martin and Dale Collins; two daughters, Donna Uhl and Theda Stevens; three step-sons, Harold, William and Richard Parsons; four brothers, Gilbert, Louis and Kenny Dye and Gary Collins; two sisters, Wilmadeane Williams and Hazel Tustin; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Naomi Travis, and two infant children.
Services were held at Leavitt Funeral Home, Belpre, Ohio, with Rev. Jack Berry and Rev. Tim Lindsay officiating, and burial in Fairview Memory Gardens, Belpre.
SARAH ANDERSON
Sarah Kingsbury Anderson, 94, of Bens Run, died Thursday, Jan. 15, 2004, at Wetzel County Hospital, New Martinsville.
She was born in Arnoldsburg, the daughter of the late George J. and Matilda Lynch Kingsbury.
She graduated from Calhoun County High School in 1931 and was a member of Spencer Tabernacle Church.
Surviving are two daughters, Hazeline Anderson of Spencer and Wilma Jean Monroe of Bens Run; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by her husband, E.V. Anderson; four brothers, Jabez, Homer, Cleo and Rector Kingsbury; and two sisters, Addie Parsons and Vera Smith.
Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg, with Rev. Garry Bowen and Rev. Rick Metheney officiating. Burial was in Gibson Cemetery, Arnoldsburg.
WILLIAM BARNES
William R. Barnes, 79, of Parkersburg, died Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2004, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital.
He was born in Grantsville, the son of the late Edgar and Elma Barr Barnes.
He was a graduate of Calhoun County High School, a U.S. Army veteran, and was retired from A.B. Chance-Emerson Electric Co., Parkersburg.
Surviving are one daughter, Barbara Beckett of Parkersburg; two granddaughters; four great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Ralph Barnes of Parkersburg and Clyde Barnes of Vienna.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ellodean Criss Barnes; two sisters; and one brother.
Services were held at Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, South Parkersburg, with Rev. Larry Dale officiating. Burial was in Ever-green South Cemetery.

Fred Ball, 89, of Beckley, died Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004, in a Beckley care center.
He was born at Pine Creek, the son of the late Norvel Leo and Mary Rebecca Propst Ball.
He was retired from Pinecrest Hospital with 20 years of service and was a member of Grace Baptist Church, Union Hall Road, Beckley. He was the last survivor of his immediate family.
Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Sibyl Louise Linton Ball; four nieces, Donna Starcher of Spencer, Bonetta Lanham of Parottsville, Tenn., Shirley Finklebinder of Youngstown, Ohio, and Bonnie Brown of Grantsville; and two nephews, Danny Carter and David Carter, both of Spencer.

Zelda M. Headley, 82, of Grantsville, died Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2004, at Minnie Hamilton Health Care Center.
She was the daughter of the late Lawrence and Dolly Dawson Bell.

daughters, Ruth Barrett of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Sophia Bacorn of Harrisville; two brothers, Harold Bell of Big Springs and Russell Bell of Ravenna, Ohio; one sister, Churl Lott of Ravenna; and seven grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jewell Headley; one son, Earl Headley; and one daughter, Louise Headley.

Jessie Isaac Powell, 84, of Akron, Ohio, died Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2004.
He was born in Arnoldsburg, the son of the late Jessie and Pearl Evans Powell.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and retired from Babcock & Wilcox with 40 years of service. He had attended Cornerstone Free Methodist Church, Akron, since 1962.
Surviving are his wife of 63 years, Ursley “Jo”; one son, Randy Powell; one daughter, Cathy Hyatt; four grandchildren; one great-grandson; and one sister, Velma Ferrel.
He was preceded in death by five sisters, Marie, Ava, Pauline, Vivian and Lovey, and five brothers, Hagan, Thurl, Ernest, Boyd and Gaily.
Services were held at Cornerstone Free Methodist Church with Pastor Brenda Young officiating. Burial was in Greenlawn Cemetery.

Etta Crawford Carpenter, 84, of Millstone, died Saturday, Jan. 24, 2004, at Miletree of Spencer.
She was born in Calhoun County, the daughter of the late W.T. and Oma Esther Wood Crawford.
She was a member of Albert’s Chapel, Sand Ridge.
Surviving are her husband, Oda Carpenter; one sister, Ursley Powell of Barberton, Ohio; one step-son, Darrell Carpenter of Oldtown, Fla.; one step-daughter, Mary Alice Harris of Akron, Ohio; five grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Dare Crawford, Glen Crawford and W.T. Crawford, Jr., and four sisters, Grace Carpenter, Jean Murawsky, Mildrend Rennie and Ivah Peggy Miller.

Arlene O. Hoalcraft, 87, of Big Flint, near West Union, died Friday, Jan. 23, 2004, in St. Joseph’s Hospital, Parkersburg.
She was born at Grantsville, the daughter of the late Porter Lee and Cassie Alberta Wilson Reese.
Along with her husband, she assisted as caretaker for many years at Masonic Memorial Park Cemetery, near West Union. She was a homemaker and a Baptist.
Surviving are seven daughters, Edith Mae Stackpole of Reeder, Ethel Fay Childers of Big Flint, Wava Jean Brown of Glenville, Beatrice Gay Dalton of Belmont, Alberta Sue Guthrie of Geneva, Ohio, Barbara Ann McClung of Fairmont and Rachel Louise Underwood of Clarksburg; one son, Roger Allan Hoalcraft of Belmont; one sister, Mary Lou Wheeler of Greenwood; one brother, Ford Reese of Greenwood; 28 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Ezra Hoalcraft, on May 15, 1980; five daughters; one sister; and three brothers.

Audrey R. Shoemaker, 84, died Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004.
She was born in Akron, Ohio, and resided in West Virginia for 25 years. She attended Seventh Day Adventist Church.
Surviving are her husband, John; one son, Jon Wallace of Akron; three daughters, Patti Baughman of Denver, N.C., Bonnie Radcliffe of Akron and Mickey Smalley of Berrien Springs, Mich.; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Karen Jones, 62, of Brohard, died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2004, at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Parkersburg.
Surviving are her husband, Harry (Mack) Jones of Brohard; her mother, Blanche Bell; three sons, James Jones of Big Springs and David Jones and Scott Jones, both of Elizabeth; three daughters, Brenda Sinnett and Debra Richards, both of Brohard, and Pam Buck of Columbus, Ohio; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her step-father, Cecil Bell; one brother, Michael Burkett; and two sisters, Dorothy and Sherry Bell.

MARY JANE (Skip) McDONALD
Mary Jane (Skip) McDonald of Mt. Zion, died Thursday, Jan. 29, 2004, at home.
She was the daughter of the late Charles and Laura Boldin and a native of Northern Virginia.
In 1987, she and her husband, Dan, a native of Calhoun County, retired from corporate life, and moved back to Calhoun. She was a member of Minnie Hamilton Health Care Center Ladies Auxiliary, in which she served one term as secretary, and was known as the “Cookie Lady,” a member of Family Resource Network, and had been one of two delegates from Calhoun to Mid-Ohio Valley Regional Health Dept. Committee.
Surviving are her husband, Dan; two sons, Gary and Ron; one daughter, Laura; and six grandchildren, Donna, Amber, Crystal, Michael, Jack and Jesse.
She was preceded in death by one son, Kenny.
Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville.
ORIS STARCHER
Oris V. Starcher, 72, of Painesville, Ohio, died Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004, at LakeWest Hospital, Willoughby, Ohio.
He was born at Leatherbark, the son of the late Henry and Ossie Dodd Starcher.
He was a tool and die maker for 33 years and was retired from General Motors Co., Lordstown, Ohio. He was a member of Willoughby Masonic Lodge, where he was a past patron, and was a charter member of Willoughby Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife of four years, Martha June Blanken Starcher; one step-daughter, Saundra Smith; one step-son, John Smith; five step-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Kessler, Chester, Dale and Adam Starcher, and two sisters, Zell Criss and Chessie Jenich.

Charles Eugene McIntyre, 69, of Munday, died Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2004.
He was born at Munday, the son of Mabel Opal Ferrell McIntyre of Big Bend and the late Russell Guy McIntyre.
He was a U.S. Army veteran and former employee of Bissett Steel Co., Cleveland, Ohio.
Surviving in addition to his mother are one brother, Lonnie McIntyre of Munday; one sister, Janice McIntyre of Big Bend; two nieces, Misty McIntyre and Lonnie Nicole McIntyre, both of Big Bend; and one great-nephew, Emanuel McIntyre.

Janice Kay Linville, 59, of Pennsboro, died Sunday, Feb. 15, 2004, at Parkersburg.
She was born at Parkersburg, the daughter of the late Shelby M. and Kathleen “Kady” VanScoy.
She was a 1962 graduate of Calhoun County High School. She was employed by Ritchie County Board of Education as a teacher’s aide for 27 years. She was a member of WVSPCA and Pennsboro Church of Christ.
Surviving are three daughters, Tonya R. Linville of Pennsboro, Lisa D. Swisher of Williamstown and Captain Stephanie K. Kennedy of Eglin Air Force Base, Fla.; one son, John Linville of Millwood; one sister, Vickie Robinson of Kenna; and nine grandchildren.

Clara Elizabeth (Katie) Cummings, 88, died Monday, Feb. 23, 2004, at home.
She was the daughter of the late James L. and Martha Ellison Kelly.
She was a member of Elmira Missionary Baptist Church.
Surviving are her husband of 65 years, H. Ray Cummings; one daughter, Helen Mollohan of Big Otter; three sons, Leon of Fairmont, Jerry of Elmira and Keith of Martinsburg; six grand-children; and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Vickery and Merle Bonnette, and three brothers, Lawrence, Claude and Leroy Kelly.

Woodrow J. (Jake) Kerby, 89, of Mt. Zion, died Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2004, at Minnie Hamilton Health Care Center.
He was born in Calhoun County and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He retired from the W.Va. Dept. of Highways and was a member of Mt. Olive United Methodist Church, Hur.
Surviving are one daughter, Rose Pursley and her husband Roy of Grantsville; three brothers, Kose Whytsell, Eugene Whytsell and Brent Whytsell; four sisters, Kathryn Ladd, Jewell Marsh, Louise Nevitt and Geneva Morgan; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Eulah Kerby, and two brothers.

ODA GRIFFITH
Oda F. Griffith, 87, of St. Marys, died Friday, Feb. 27, 2004.
She was born at Big Springs, the daughter of the late William and Ida M. Snider Leeson.
She had been employed by Ritchie County Schools as a foster grandparent and was a Methodist.
Surviving are two daughters, Doris Bills and husband Gary and Deloris Bierce and husband Ronald, all of Greens Run Community, St. Marys; eight grandchildren; and five great-grand-children.

DEWARD OFFUTT
Deward L. Offutt, 83, of Millstone, died Sunday, Feb. 29, 2004.
He was born in Calhoun County near the farm where he spent his life, the son of the late Arthur and Etta Whytsell Offutt.
He was a graduate of Calhoun County High School, Class of 1940. He served in World War II from 1942-1946 in the South Pacific and in the reserves from 1946-1949. He was retired from Hildreth Oil & Gas and Kingsbury Oil & Gas. He served 45 years on the Little Kanawha Soil Conservation District Board as a supervisor and on the RC&D Board. He was one of the original founders of West Fork Community Action and helped with the organization of the West Virginia Molasses Festival. He served as a county com-missioner from 1967-1975. He was a member of Louisa Chapel Arnoldsburg U.M. Church for 70 years, and most recently attended Sand Ridge U.M. Church.
Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Byrnadeen Offutt; one son, D. Lention Offutt and wife Karen of Elizabeth; one daughter, Sherlene Conley and husband Kenny of Millstone; three grand-daughters, Melissa and Sarah Offutt and Hannah Conley; and one sister, Delma Kemper of Millstone.
He was preceded in death by an infant son, and one brother, Denver Offutt.

Nora Lou Young, 65, of Pomeroy, Ohio, died Monday, Mar. 1, 2004, at her home.
She was born in Calhoun County, the daughter of the late Ernest Roy and Flora B. Stemple Smith.
She was a Methodist and had worked as a prep cook for several restaurants and nursing home facilities.
Surviving are two daughters, Debra Young of Parkersburg and Barbara Collins of Belleville; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, her caregiver Edith Barnhouse of Pomeroy and Pauline Smith; one brother, Roger Lee Smith; and several nieces and nephews, including caregiver Steve Barnhouse.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank D. Young, Sr.; one son, Frank D. Young, Jr.; an infant brother, Charles Smith; and an infant sister, Thelma Smith.

Madge C. Huber, 95, of Davisville, died Saturday, Feb. 28, 2004, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital.
She was born in Grantsville, the daughter of the late Sanford and Laura Francis Cunningham.
She retired from Eckard Drug Store, Orlando, Fla., and formerly worked for Lakeview Drug Store, Parkersburg. She was a member of Sunrise Baptist Church.
Surviving are one son, James L. Huber of Davisville; one daughter, Shirley Mehl of Inverness, Fla.; one foster daughter, Lillian McCrary of Parkersburg; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Lee Huber, in 1979; one foster son, Gilbert Keith; four brothers; and two sisters.

VEDA MORRISON
Veda Campbell Morrison, 98, of Grantsville, died Friday, Mar. 5, 2004, 11 days short of her 99th birthday, at The Willows, Parkersburg.
She was born at Grantsville, the daughter of the late John and Bertie Deem Propst.
She was a charter member of Grantsville Women’s Club and a 50-year member and past matron of Grantsville Chapter 73, Order of Eastern Star. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Grantsville, where she had been a Sunday School teacher and member of the church choir.
Surviving are two sons, Milfred G. Campbell of Battle Creek, Mich., and Gary L. Campbell of Parkersburg; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Guss Campbell, in 1945; her second husband, Troea Morrison, in 1989; and one sister, Stella Sears.

Lear Parsons Weekley, 95, died Friday, Mar. 5, 2004.
She was the daughter of the late Bailey and Nanny Parsons.
She lived in Calhoun County until 1955, then resided in Akron, Ohio. She retired from Akron City Hospital in 1980. She was a member of Order of Eastern Star.
Surviving are four sons, Paul Weekley of Knoxville, Tenn., Lowell Weekley of Nicut, Bill Weekley of Wooster, Ohio, and Carroll Weekley of Parkersburg; one daughter, Sharon Hill of Lineboro, Md.; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Lucy Bailey of Akron.

He was the son of Doug and Sheila Batten Murray of Reedy.

He was in Calhoun County, the son of the late Lawrence and Gae Butler Hall.
He was a U.S. Army veteran and was retired from the W.Va. Dept. of Highways.

She was born at Marmet, the daughter of the late Harlan P. Allison and Nora Jordan Allison.

Helen Virginia Perry, 75, of Lowell, Ohio, died Saturday, Mar. 13, 2004, at her home.
She was born in Russett, the daughter of the late Dallas and Daisy Knotts Stump.

Perry, Jr., of Vineland, N.J., Michael Perry of Buena Vista, N.J., and Jeffrey Perry and Scott Perry, both of Lowell; 25 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Eugene Stump of Parkersburg and Dr. Darrell Stump of Dublin, Va.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Drexel Perry, Sr., whom she married Sept. 14, 1947, on Mar. 13, 1997; and one infant son, James David.
Services were held at Lowell Chapel of Cawley & Peoples Funeral Home, with Pastor David Snyder officiating. Burial was in Greenlawn Cemetery.

Charley McCune, 81, of Massillon, Ohio, died Wednesday, Mar. 10, 2004, at Massillon Community Hospital.
He was born in Orma, the son of the late Ellsworth and Myrtle Duncan McCune.
He was an Army veteran of World War II and was retired as a scarfer from the former Republic Steel Corp. with 34 years of service. He was a member of Massillon Baptist Temple.
Surviving are two daughters, Diane Parker and Dolores Crannell, both of Massillon; three sons, Charles L. McCune of Massillon, Timothy P. McCune of Bolivar, Ohio, and Delbert L. McCune of Belgium; two sisters, Leomel Isenhart of West Virginia and Alma Bingham of Wadsworth, Ohio; one brother, Denver McCune of Spencer; 12 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and special friend, Lucille Elbert of Massillon.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Glenna L. McCune, on Apr. 10, 2002; one brother; and three sisters.

She was born in Calhoun County, the daughter of Mae Cottrell Falls Bugden of Arnoldsburg and the late Everett Falls.

She was the daughter of the late Delbert and Hazel Barnett Bennett.
Surviving are five sisters, Emogene Hitchcock of Parkersburg, Mary Steorts of Marietta, Ohio, Alice Hrebinko of Fishersville, Va., Christina Hendershot of Lower Salem, Ohio, and Pamela Lynch of Mt. Zion; and one brother, Bruce Bennett of Parkersburg.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles and Ronald Bennett.
THELMA TAYLOR
Thelma Maysel Taylor, 98, of Minnora, died Thursday, Mar. 11, 2004, in Morgantown.
She was born in Clay County, Oak Hill Ridge Community, the daughter of the late Lewis Columbus and Londia Foreman.
During World War II, she worked at the Naval Avionics Defense Plant, Institute, to finance her studies to gain her state practical nursing certificate. After World War II, she purchased a dairy farm at Sutton. She later sold it and moved to
Charleston where she took up nursing again and went into the construction business with her son, Bob. She spent much of her life as a practical nurse in private homes in the Charleston area before retiring in 1970. She was a member of Minnora United Methodist Church.
Surviving are two sons, Bernard E. Taylor and wife Kathryn of Morgantown and Joe Taylor and wife Penny of Minnora; one daughter-in-law, Janice Frame Taylor of Fairbanks, Alaska; three sisters, Emma Silmon of Ripley, Judia E. Slater of Orlando, Fla., and Maxcine Sigmon of Charleston; 16 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil M. Taylor, and two sons, Robert and James Taylor.

Willis Gene Hicks, 65, of Gallipolis, Ohio, died Friday, Feb. 27, 2004.
He was born at Chloe, Oka Road, the son of the late Iris B. and Cora Rinehart Hicks.
Surviving are his wife, Karen Badgett Hicks; three daughters, Flora K. Stapleton, Jody L. Stapleton and Linda M. Hackworth; one son, Andy Hicks; seven grandchildren; two great-grand-children; four brothers, Edward, Carroll, Donnie and Forest Hicks; and four sisters, Frances Waldron, Sue Sampson, Patricia Siers and Margaret Lantz.
He was preceded in death by his twin brother, Luther Jarrett Hicks, and two sisters, Gwendolyn Simmons and Mary Virnetti Parsons.

TOLLEY FITZWATER
Tolley W. Fitzwater, 95, of Glenville, died Thursday, Mar. 18, 2004, at his home.
He was the son of the late William and Zonobia Fitzwater.
He was a certified mine foreman since 1947 and had worked in numerous mines in Clay, Fayette and Gilmer counties. He retired from Rochester-Pittsburgh Coal Co., where he was “fire boss.” After retirement, he operated a custom meat cutting shop in Glenville for several years. He was a member of Masonic Lodge 97, Clay, and Fola Baptist Church. He was a member of the UMWA.
Surviving are his wife, Dr. Catherine Grant; two daughters, Josephine Hart and Johan Montgomery; seven sons, Shirley Fitzwater and wife Faye of Grantsville, Jim, Lambert, Earl, Calvin, Robert Orton and Rodney; 25 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; his longtime friend and helper, Priscilla Bailey; three nephews; and one niece.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Glenna Holcomb; his second wife, Ethel Price; one daughter, Barbara Hickman; one granddaughter; and 15 brothers and sisters.
Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg, with Rev. Ronzel Roberts officiating. Burial was in Meadow Lane Cemetery, Glenville, with Masonic graveside rites.

Jimmy O. Bail, 70, of Martinsburg, died Thursday, Mar. 18, 2004, at his home.
He was born in Clay, the son of the late Orvan S. Bail and Berniece Young Bail.
He was a pilot and civil engineer and Retired Lt. Colonel with 33 years service in the 167th Air Lift Wing of the W.Va. Air National Guard. He had the distinction of being the last active duty pilot of the P51 Mustang Airplane.
He was a Shriner and Past Patron of the Order of Eastern Star. He was a member of BPOE 778, Martinsburg Lodge 120, Loyal Order of the Moose, Issac Walton Club, and president of the Dirty Dozen Social Club, Inc. He was a member of Young Memorial Methodist Church, Queen Shoals.
Surviving are his wife of 48 years, Martha Gainer Bail; two daughters, Kimberly B. Bail and Kelly Bail Manor; six grand-children; sister-in-law, Bernice Gainer Yoke Hardman and husband James; niece, Jennifer Yoke Morris and husband Richard; and grand niece and nephew, Elizabeth J. Morris and Daniel M. Morris and wife Amanda.
Military memorial services were held in Inwood and burial was on the family farm at Queen Shoals.

She was born at Trace Fork, Gilmer County, the daughter of the late Charles McCaskey Nicholas and Alta Olive Stidd.
She was a homemaker and sometimes worked as a seamstress and housekeeper for friends and relatives. She was a Baptist.

She was a 1935 graduate of Calhoun County High School and a founding member of Mt. Zion Public Service District. She was a homemaker and a member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church.
Surviving are two sisters, Myla Fleming of Barboursville and Wauneta Waters of Cincinnati, Ohio; many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews, and Richard and Karen Kirby of Mt. Zion.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Willard (Pete) Kerby; one brother, Austin Stump; and one sister, Lillian Eberle.

Ruth E. Lowther Meadows, 79, of Elyria, Ohio, died Wednes-day, Mar. 10, 2004, at EMH Regional Medical Center, Elyria.
She was born in Benson, the daughter of the late Ordie and Oleta Collins Lowther.
She moved to Ohio around 1950 and retired as an inspector from Parker-Hannifin Corp., Elyria, in 1987 after more than 20 years of service. Prior to that, she had worked at General Industries, Elyria.
Surviving are two sons, David Meadows of Elyria and Al Meadows, Jr., of Sheffield Village, Ohio; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one sister, JoAnn Jenkins of Stumptown; and three brothers Bobby Lowther of Hartville, Ohio, Odis Lowther of Clewiston, Fla., and Cecil Lowther of North Ridgeville, Ohio.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was a former owner of Grantsville Garage. He was a member of Calhoun County Singers and attended Enon Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Lucy Nichols; five daughters, Gloria Kendall, Doris Reaser, Sheila Meadows, Charlotte McDonald and Annetta Perry; three sons, Larry, Millard and Garland Nichols; 17 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

He was a 1959 graduate of Calhoun County High School. He retired from Smith Transfer and was employed by Marietta Industrial Enterprises, and was a member of the Teamsters Union and Sixth and Washington Streets Church of Christ, Marietta, Ohio.

She was a member of South Parkersburg United Methodist Church and retired after 20 years of service to Wood County Board of Education.

Etta Chenoweth Wheeler, 98, of Parkersburg, died Monday, Apr. 5, 2004.
She was born at Nicut, the daughter of the late David Oscar and Mary Jane Knotts Chenoweth.
She graduated from Calhoun County High School and Bowling Green Business University, Bowling Green, Ky. She worked in the State Legislature and State Tax Dept., Charleston, for 14 years. She and her husband opened Chenoweth Wheeler Realty Co. in Parkersburg with his father. She later worked for the State Road Commission, where she retired after eight years of service. She was active in Democratic Woman’s Club, Civic Woman’s Club and Zonta Club, and was a 50-year member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church.
Surviving are one brother, J. Wesley Chenoweth of Parkersburg; one step-son, Hoyt N. Wheeler of Columbia, S.C.; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold L. Wheeler; one infant daughter, Jane; seven brothers, Thurl R., David W., Denver O., and Carl Chenoweth and three infants; and a nephew, Carl, who was killed during a flying mission over Austria during World War II.

She was born at Alice, Ohio, the daughter of the late Howard and Viola Hall Wolfe.
She was a homemaker and a member of Strong Tower Church of God, Wellington.

She was born in Calhoun County, the daughter of the late Orval and Icy Husk Hayhurst.
She was a Christian.

Charles “Chuck” Edward Summers, 64, of Waverly, died Friday, Jan. 16, 2004, at Frostproof, Fla.
He was born at Mt. Zion, the son of the late Oma Summers and Opal Sterm Summers.
He worked at BJ Hughes and was a Baptist.
Surviving are his wife, Sandra Summers; two daughters, Debra Curry of Williamstown and Melinda Pacheco of Galliano, La.; two sons, Robert Summers of Springboro, Pa., and Charles Summers of Galliano; one brother, Jack Summers of Loraine, Ohio; one sister, Joan Stull of Grantsville; and seven grandchildren.

She was born in Spencer, the daughter of the late Otmer and Rachel Digman Rader.
She retired as a psychiatric aide at Haw-thorndon State Hospital, Ohio, after 31 years of service. She attended Letherbark Church.
Surviving is her husband of 56 years, Donald Whytsell.

Blanche Whytsell, 83, of Arnoldsburg, died Friday, Apr. 16, 2004, at her residence.
She was born in Roane County, the daughter of the late Henry Clay and Mae Greathouse Parrill.
She retired from Kellwood Co. with 30 years of service and was a field editor for Taste of Home cooking magazine. She attended Mt. Zion United Methodist Church.
Surviving are her husband of 68 years, Randall Whytsell; one daughter, Peggy Lou Stemple and husband Marvin of Arnoldsburg; one grandson, John Kenton Stemple of Parkersburg; one grand-daughter, Deidre Lynn Hobbs and husband Martin of Newbury Park, Calif.; great-grandson, Jared Wesley Hobbs, and great-granddaughter, Valerie Elizabeth Hobbs, both of Newbury Park; one brother, Dick Parrill of Spencer; three sisters, Nina Cassady of Mineral Wells, Opal Kirby of Mt. Zion and Kathleen Gainer of Barberton, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Joan Henthorn, and three brothers, Raymond, Robert and Clay Parrill.
Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg, with Rev. Rick Swearengin officiating. Burial was in Lynch Cemetery, Arnoldsburg.

Thomas Avery Wood, Jr., 68, of Sand Ridge, died Tuesday, Apr. 13, 2004, in Roane General Hospital.
He was the son of the late Thomas Avery and Viola Umstead Wood.
He was a former employee of W.Va. Dept. of Highways, Weston State Hospital and Jackson’s Mill 4-H Grounds, Weston. He was a member of Rosedale Baptist Church.
Surviving are two daughters, Debra Mosely of Yuma, Ariz., and Romona Morris of Athens, Ala.; one son, Thomas Avery Wood III of Tucson, Ariz.; one sister, Thelma Wire of Grantsville; one brother, O’Dell Wood of Stumptown; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Carol; one half-sister, Belva Umstead Carpenter; one sister, Maggie Burrows; and four brothers, Guy Wood, Warren George Wood, Denver James Wood and Romeo (Jake) Wood.
Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg, with Rev. David Morris officiating. Burial was in Collins-Community Cemetery, Stumptown.

Floyd Parsons, 76, of Grantsville, died Wednesday, Apr. 14, 2004, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital, Parkersburg.
He was born in Nicholas County. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, a retired truck driver and a member of Teamsters Local #24, Akron, Ohio. He was a member of Brooksville Baptist Church, Big Bend.
Surviving are his wife, Irene G. Parsons; one son, Harold Parsons of Pleasant City, Ohio; one daughter, Patricia Gardner of Urichsville, Ohio; two step-children, Martha Harris and Terry Siers, both of Big Bend; one brother, Newt Parsons of Georgia; three sisters, Mary Bunch of Alabama, Ann Jordan of Richwood and Jean Lawers of Akron, Ohio; 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Betty Parsons, and one son, Steve Parsons.
Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Rev. C.W. McDonald officiating. Burial was in Goodnight Cemetery, Big Bend.

Phyllis Jean Finkenbinder, 61, of Grantsville, died Wednesday, Apr. 14, 2004, at her home.
She was the daughter of Stella Bennett of Akron, Ohio, and the late Carl Bennett.
Surviving in addition to her mother are her husband, William Finkenbinder; three sons, Robert O. Hipp and Brian Hipp and wife Michelle, all of Grantsville, and Donald C. Hipp of Huntington; three grandchildren, Danielle Goodrich and Sidney and Nathaniel Hipp, all of Grantsville; two sisters, Linda George of Barberton, Ohio, and Judy Greenaway of Akron; and several nieces and nephews of Akron.
She was preceded in death by her second husband, Ivan V. Gunn.

Robert E. Buck, 67, of Guysville, Ohio, died Friday, Apr. 16, 2004, at his home.
He was born at Lumberport, the son of the late Theodore and Ruthford Parks Buck.
He was a graduate of Calhoun County High School and was a former employee of B&O Railroad and CSX Railroad, where he was a track foreman for 30 years.
Surviving are his wife of 35 years, Donna Metcalf Buck; two sons, Edward Buck and Daniel Buck, both of Guysville; one daughter, Debora Beck of Guysville; seven brothers, Harold Buck of Cleveland, Ohio, Eugene Buck and wife Bonnie of Big Springs; Donald Buck of Coolville, Ohio, and Denzyl Buck, Charles Buck, Delbert Buck and Ronnie Buck, all of Guysville; three sisters, Opal Swisher of Grantsville, Thelma Cooper of Clinton, Ohio, and Delma Martin of Nelsonville, Ohio; two granddaughters; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Clarence Buck.

REV. GLENDON McKEE
Rev. Glendon G. McKee, 89, of Mt. Zion, died Friday, Apr. 16, 2004, at his home.
He was born at Millstone, the son of the late George and Nora Ball McKee.
He was a former employee of Spencer State Hospital, Spencer, and American Viscose Co., Parkersburg. After being called into the ministry, he enrolled in Glenville State College and accepted the ministry to a charge of 11 churches in the Glenville-Normantown circuit. After graduation from college, he returned to Calhoun County where he pastored churches until his health failed. He preached Christ’s message for 55 years. He was a teacher for 30 years in the Calhoun County school system. He began in a one-room school and taught English at Calhoun County High School for 29 years.
Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Eupha Hicks McKee; one son, Rev. Roger G. McKee and wife Wilma of Weston; one daughter, Roanna M. Stump and husband John of Grantsville; one brother, Gordon McKee and wife Mary of Millstone; two sisters, Lenell Stalnaker and husband Paul and Arleta Sturm and husband Carl, all of Millstone; six grandchildren, Rhonda Krugman and husband Tom of Painted Post, N.Y., J. Neil Stump and wife Gina of Grantsville, and Margie Mick and husband Mike, Christina Watson and husband John, Mike McKee and wife Amy and Matthew McKee and wife Christina, all of Weston; 11 great-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; and one step-great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Arco McKee; one sister, Flo Hall; one grandchild; and one great-grandchild.

Walter “Junior” Ward, 76, of Parkersburg, died Saturday, Apr. 17, 2004, in Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital, Parkersburg.
He was born in Grantsville, the son of the late Walter and Ina Wright Ward.
He was a member of Evangelical Methodist Church and worked for Elkem, formerly Union Carbide. He was a stock car race driver.
Surviving are his wife of more than 50 years, Norma Robey Ward of Parkersburg; two sisters, Geraldine Sloan of Parkersburg and Blondell Miller of Ravenswood; and 10 nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one nephew, Buddy Roger Robey.
Services were held at Leavitt Funeral Home, Parkersburg, with Rev. Larry Piatt officiating. Burial was in Sunset Memory Gardens.
THOMAS HAROLD JUSTICE
Thomas Harold Justice, 59, of Grantsville, died Friday, Apr. 16, 2004, after a short battle with cancer.
He was the son of Harold and Margarette Justice of Cedar Grove and was a 1963 graduate of Wirt County High School.
He retired from Goodrich Corp. in 2002 after 32 years of service. He was an active member of First Baptist Church, Grantsville, serving as chairman of the Board of Christian Education. He had taught Sunday School, served as a Deacon, sang in the choir and spoke in churches as a layperson. He was a Class One Umpire for softball and baseball, and a member of Little Kanawha Umpiring Board where he served as secretary and previously as president. He was a member and former officer of Bee Creek Hunting Club.
Surviving in addition to his parents are his wife of 37 years, Sherry Ross Justice; two sons, John Thomas and wife Christy of Parkersburg and Joseph Todd Justice and fiancee Lori Drybala of West Chester, Pa.; special family friend and caregiver, Gina Yancey; two brothers Alan (Tony) Justice of Parkersburg and Jack Justice of Belton, Tex.; and three sisters, Lena Ruth Bowen of Claremont, Calif., Jeanie Clary of Troy, Tex., and Jill Keener of Temple, Tex.

Garold G. Simons, Sr., 74, of Gassaway, died Saturday, Apr. 24, 2004, at his home.
He was born in Clay County, the son of the late Cecil and Gertie Truman Simons.
He was a graduate of Spencer High School and a driver for Kroger Co., a restaurant manager and a farmer. He was a veteran of the Korean War and a member of American Legion Post No. 21, Spencer, and Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, Mt. Zion.
Surviving are his wife, Jeanette Henderson Simons; two sons, Garold G. Simons, Jr., of Spencer and Thomas C. “Tom” Simons of Gassaway; one daughter, Terry Lea Carter of Richmond, Va.; one step-son, Dennis Spaur of Lincolnton, N.C.; three step-daughters, Annette Spaur of Vanceboro, N.C., and Nanette Sampson and Tammy Houchin, both of Arnoldsburg; two nieces, Angela Greathouse of Arnoldsburg and Laura Pauley of Elkview; several grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Velma K. Kuhl Barker, 96, of Parkersburg, died Monday, Apr. 19, 2004, at her residence.
She was born in Calhoun County, the daughter of the late Homer F. Kuhl and Lummie Elizabeth Beam Kuhl.
She retired from U.S. Quarry Tile Co. and was a member of Church of Christ.
Surviving are three sons, Oval J. Barker of Davisville, Charles F. Barker of Parkersburg and Jack L. Barker of Williamstown; one daughter, Betty Jenkins of Parkersburg; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Roger Kent Stump, 66, of Evansville, Ind., died Saturday, Apr. 24, 2004, at his home.
He was born in Grantsville, the son of Roy J. and Gertrude Robinson Stump.
He graduated from West Virginia University with a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering and was a member of WVU Alumni Association. He was a chemical engineer/ project manager with GE Plastics, Mt. Vernon, Ind., and retired in 1994 after 35 years. He later worked in the same position for Lockwood Greene Engineering, Carmel, Ind., and Dynamic Engineering Design, Indianapolis, Ind. He retired from the Army Reserve with a rank of Lt. Col. and was a member of St. Marks United Methodist Church, Carmel, and former member of First United Methodist Church, Mt. Vernon. He was a member of Eureka Masonic Lodge #40, Grantsville, Scottish Rite and Murat Shrine, Indianapolis, General Thomas Posey Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution and Mt. Vernon Elks Lodge #277.
Surviving are his wife, Karen Kay Hughes Bauer Stump; one son, Scott W. Stump of Pittsburgh, Pa.; two daughters, Karen Baker and Yulonda Schutz, both of Mt. Delano F. McCartney, 69, of Calcutta, Ohio, died Tuesday, Apr. 20, 2004, at East Liverpool City Hospital, Ohio.
He was born in Grantsville, the son of Coe M. Hickman McCartney of Calcutta and the late O.G. McCartney.
He worked for 22 years at the former American Vitrified and retired in 1992 from Ohio Edison’s Sammis Plant as an auxiliary tender.
Surviving in addition to his mother are his wife, Nina B. Godfrey McCartney, whom he married on Dec. 27, 1955; two sons, Michael D. McCartney of Marietta, Ohio, and Terry R. McCartney of East Liverpool; two brothers, Ersel McCartney of East Liverpool and Ethan McCartney of Streetsboro, Ohio; and three grandchildren.

She was born in Weston, the daughter of the late James Roy Boyles and Gertrude Burkhammer Boyles. She was a retired social worker with W.Va. Dept. of Health and Human Resources, Glenville and Grantsville. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Glenville, and Republican Women of Gilmer County.

Eva Mae Taylor, 74, of Zebulon, N.C., died Tuesday, Apr. 27, 2004, at Nash General Hospital, Rocky Mt., N.C.
She was a former resident of Grantsville until moving to North Carolina in 1999. She worked for BFGoodrich as an assembler.
Surviving are two daughters, Nellie Basnett and Elizabeth Williams, both of Zebulon; one son, Chester P. Williams of Fleming, Ohio; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.

He was born in Barberton, Ohio, the son of the late Emery “Pete” and Lorraine “Brooke” Riddel Rogers of Grantsville.
He retired as a self-employed electrical contractor.

He was born in Calhoun County, the son of the late Frank and Artie Cunningham Hardman.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was a retired Sergeant First Class with the U.S. Army Reserve Military Police. He was a graduate of Calhoun County High School and was retired from Consolidated Natural Gas Co. He was a member of Beech Valley United Methodist Church and taught Bible Study at Broomstick and Norman Ridge churches.
Surviving are his wife, Docie Ellen Frederick Hardman; one son, Nathan G. Hardman of Grantsville; one daughter, Carol Sue Nicholson of Grantsville; two sisters, Jean Smith of Cortland, Ohio, and Armetta Shedl of Warren, Ohio; one brother, Tom Hardman of Hixson, Tenn.; two grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

She was born in Calhoun County, the daughter of the late Columbus C. and Martha Villers Arthur.
She was raised from the age of three by her grandmother, the late Martha Criss Arthur. She was a homemaker and a member of Grace Brethren Church.
Surviving are her husband of 70 years, Vandale Lee Meadows of Parkersburg; one son, Wayne Meadows of Mineral Wells; one daughter, Viola O’Neal Haggard of Moncks Corner, S.C.; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by five sisters and four brothers.

He was born in Calhoun County, the son of the late John and Sarah Husk Davis.
He was a was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a retired mechanic.

She was born in Tanner and lived in Eastlake for 44 years. She was a homemaker and a member of Christianity Work and Reverend of Spirituality.
Surviving are her husband of 55 years, Anes D. Ford; three sons, Ronny L. Ford and Richard L. Ford, both of Mentor, Ohio, and Robert L. She was born in Calhoun County, the daughter of the late Martin and Maude Boone Metz.
She retired in 1980 from Siers Grocery, which she and her husband owned and operated in Chloe for more than 40 years, and she was also a postal clerk in Chloe. She was a member of Minnora Methodist Church.
Surviving are two daughters, Sandy Murphy of Creston and Sue Calvert of Lost Creek; one son, Daniel Siers of Charleston; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two brothers, Frank Metz of Chloe and Martin Metz, Jr., of Orma; and two sisters, Irene Wayne of Spencer and Inez Carr of Mt. Zion.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde Siers, on Nov. 25, 1996; three brothers; and three sisters.

He was born at Nobe, the son of the late Abe and Daisy Church Whipkey.
He was a gospel singer and taught gospel music in Calhoun and surrounding counties. He had been a member of Chapel Baptist Church, Nobe, since 1934, and was a member of IOOF Lodge No. 118, Burnt House.
Surviving are one brother, Leon Whipkey of Nobe, and three sisters, Agnes (Susie) Smith and Thelma Lowe, both of Ohio, and Alma Wright of Parkersburg.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Alta Whipkey; one sister, Mary Morris; and one infant
brother.
Services were held at Chapel Baptist Church with Rev. Ronzel Roberts and Rev. Robert Nicholas officiating. Burial was in Nobe Cemetery.

Raymond C. Belt, 75, died in Tucson, Ariz., on Friday, May 7, 2004.
He was the son of the late Carl and Lottie Belt.
He served in the Armed Forces from 1949-1952 during the Korean War. He was a member of Operating Engineers Local 18, VFW 10188, and American Legion.
Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Phyllis Nicholas Belt; children, Jennifer Albert, Raymond C. Belt, Jr., and Tina Neal; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Marlene Lewis and Jean Bush.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Carol Richards.

Goldie Maloney, 86, of Vienna, died Thursday, May 6, 2004, at her residence.
She was born in Calhoun County, the daughter of the late Bryan and Mary Jane Bush Wright.
She had worked for Arlene’s Dress Shop as a retail manager and was a member of Beechwood Presbyterian Church.
Surviving are her husband of 65 years, Don Maloney; one son, Don Maloney, Jr., of Parkersburg; two daughters, Shirleyan Brown of N. Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Patricia Fordyce of Parkersburg; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two sisters, Thelma Francis of Parkersburg and Tressia Francis of Grantsville; and two brothers, Harlow Wright of New Mexico and Kenneth Wright of Ripley.
She was preceded in death by five brothers and sisters and an infant grandson.
Services were held at Leavitt Funeral Home, Parkersburg, with Rev. John Koerner officiating. Burial was in Sunset Memory Gardens.

Elbert L. “Ted” Seabolt, 71, of Spencer, died Tuesday, May 11, 2004, in CAMC-General, Charleston.
He was born at Wellford, the son of the late John Henry and Bessie May Strickland Seabolt.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War and was retired from Columbia Gas Co. He was a Christian and attended Hebron Memorial Church, Speed.
Surviving are his wife, Georgis G. Seabolt of Spencer; one daughter, Sandra M. McClain of Chloe; one son, Donald R. Seabolt of Chloe; one brother, Jessie Thurman “Tom” Seabolt of Alliance, Ohio; one sister, Rosie Hammond of Webbsville, Ky.; four grandsons; and one granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by one son, Ronald Lee Seabolt; three brothers, Cecil, Johnny and Bill Seabolt; and one sister, Sylvia Coffee.

Lena E. Haught King, 77, of Olathe, Kan., died Sunday, May 2, 2004.
She was born in Calhoun County, the daughter of the late McClellan and Verna Elliott Haught.
She was a 1944 graduate of Calhoun High School. After graduation, she worked at Fort George Meade, Md., where she met her husband.
Surviving are two daughters, Linda VonLoh and her husband, Larry of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Becky Buckley of Gardner, Kan.; three grandchildren; one great-grandson; and one sister, Grace Stump of Sand Ridge.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ted King, and one brother, Elliott Haught.
Services were held in Olathe. Burial was in Old Monticello Cemetery, Shawnee, Kan.

Sharon Faye McFarland, 57, of Grantsville, died Saturday, May 22, 2004, in Charleston Area Medical Center.
She was born at Madisonville, Ky., the daughter of Richard and Jessie Ruth Sampson Williams.

She was the daughter of the late Lovie Olive McClain and Schuyler Playford McClain.
She was active in Barnes Run Church and Arnoldsburg Community Church for many years and attended Trinity Church of God, Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, and Weston Church of God.
Surviving are one son, Gary Conley of Rockport; one daughter, Karen Conley-Dukes of Elizabeth; two sisters, Mae M. Johnson of Burnsville and Eleanor L. Reese of Barberton, Ohio; four brothers, Bert McClain and Roy McClain, both of Akron, Ohio, Sammy McClain of Lakemore, Ohio, and Earl McClain of Cambridge, Ohio; and five grandchildren.

He was born at Grantsville, the son of the late Karl and Lula Hayhurst Johnson.
He was a graduate of Calhoun County High School and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was retired from General Motors Corp. with 30 years of service and was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church, near Grantsville.
Surviving are one brother, Herbert Dale Johnson of Berea, Ohio; two nieces, Teresa Barkley of Kansas and Dale Cummins of Ohio; one step-niece, Arnette Mahaney Creager of Missouri; and two step-nephews, David Mahaney of Ohio and Perry Mahaney of Texas.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, where he received a Purple Heart. He was a sign painter and carpenter and a member of Mount Olive United Methodist Church.

Vickey Lynn Shelby, 54, died Wednesday, June 2, 2004, at Lexington Memorial Hospital, Lexington, N.C.
She was born in Charleston, the daughter of the late Irene E. Naylor.
Surviving are three sons, Johnny Dale, Shawn Lewis and Michael Eugene and 10 grandchildren, all of Winston-Salem, N.C.; one lifelong friend, Mary Kay McConkey of Albany, Mo.; one uncle, Lewis Naylor of Belpre, Ohio; two aunts, Ollidene Hall of Arnoldsburg and Edna Kingsbury of Grantsville; and several cousins.

James C. Billey, 79, of Eastlake, Ohio, died Saturday, June 19, 2004, at Euclid, Ohio.
He was born at Galloway, Barbour County, the son of the late Frank and Bessie Collins Billey.
He retired in 1985 from TRW Co., Euclid, as a machinist with 34 years of service. He attended Flemington High School and graduated from Calhoun County High School. He served in Europe with the U.S. Army during World War II with Co. I, 515th parachute regiment of the 82nd Airborne Division. He was a life member of VFW Post 4358, Willoughby Hills, Ohio, and a member of J.F.K. Senior Center, Eastlake.
Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Wilda Goff Billey; two daughters, Diana Facemyer of Painesville Township, Ohio, and Darla Quinn of Wyoming, Mich.; two sons, Dwight Billey of Willoughby and Dean Billey of Eastlake; three sisters, Dorothy Ford of Garfield Heights, Ohio, Clara Williams of Glenville and Jenny Hosey of Ocala, Fla.; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Roger Hoyt Gherke, 65, of Arizona, died Wednesday, June 23, 2004, at Thunderbird Hospital, Phoenix, Ariz.
He was born in Grantsville, the son of the late Waylan Hoyt and Mary L. Carr Gherke.
He was a member of Williamstown United Methodist Church and a veteran of the American Army.
Surviving are two step-sons, Brad and Mike Fisher, both of Glendale, Ariz.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Peggy O’Neal Gherke, and two brothers, Larry C. and Eugene C. “Joe” Gherke.
Services were held at Leavitt Funeral Home, Parkersburg, with Rev. Leo Farley officiating. Military graveside rites were performed by American Legion Post 15.

Phyllis Butler, 52, of Lenoir, N.C., died Wednesday, June 23, 2004, at Caldwell County Hospice.
She was born in Orma, the daughter of the late Willie F. and Beatrice Carpenter Butler.
She worked for American & Efird and was a Baptist.
Surviving are her husband, Larry L. Butler of Lenoir; one son, Larry L. “Lee” Butler, Jr., of Lenoir; one daughter, Cassie R. Robert Cleo Kerby, 80, of Norton, Ohio, died Monday, June 21, 2004.
He was the son of the late Dewey and Mattie Kerby. He was a resident of Norton for 52 years and retired from Seiberling T&R with 38½ years of service. He was a member of Barberton Lodge 750, AF&AM, and Barberton Moose Lodge 759.
Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Janette; two sons, Bill and Jack Kerby; three daughters, Doris Williams, Patricia Garner and Brenda Adamoy; seven grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one sister, Louise Estep of Grantsville.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Jack, Beryl and Deo, and one son, Robert.

Oleta Yoak Hill, 93, of Grantsville, died Monday, June 21, 2004.
She was born in Calhoun County, the daughter of the late Ira and Fannie Morris Yoak.
She had been a member of Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church for 85 years and had served as adult Sunday School teacher and was a former president of Pleasant Hill U.M. Women. She was a 50-year member of Order of Eastern Star, Chapter #73, of Grantsville, and was a former high priestess of White Shrine. She was a former radio operator for West Virginia State Police and was a delegate to United Methodist Conference for 52 years. She was a 1992 West Virginia Folk Festival Belle.
Surviving are three brothers, Ivy Von Yoak and wife Freda of Grantsville, Don Yoak and wife Lucretia of Spencer and Harold Yoak and wife Eileen of Parkersburg; three step-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, James H. Lamp; her second husband, Olin Hill; three brothers, Morris Yoak, Paul Yoak and Glendon Yoak; and two sisters, Mildred Yoak and Betty Ann Hickman.

She was the daughter of the late James Thomas and Mary Jane Metz Grogg.
She was a member of Mt. Liberty Church and the Pythian Sisters, Tanner, for many years.

Francis Starcher, 75, of Warren, Ohio, formerly of Orma, died Thursday, June 24, 2004, at his home.
He was born in Calhoun County, the son of Hattie Starcher of Girard, Ohio, and the late Reed Starcher.
He worked for 33 years for U.S. Steel Corp., Youngstown, Ohio, as a steel stock manager, and was a member of Steelworker’s Union.
Surviving in addition to his mother are his first wife, Mary Shaffer, and children, Betty Jo Booth, Terry Starcher, Francine Livi, Darlene Riggle, Brenda Claypool, Vicki Starcher, Lorainn Park and Linda Starcher, with whom he made his home; one sister, Amanda Stonebraker of Girard; one brother, Winfield Starcher and wife Norma of Orma; 17 grandchildren; and 15 great-grand-children.
He was preceded in death by his second wife, Mary Spaljaric; his third wife, Charlotte D’Vanzo; and two sisters, Myrtle Hupp and Grace Richards.

REV. LEROY KEENEY
Rev. Dr. LeRoy M. Keeney, 83, of St. Albans, died Wednesday, June 9, 2004.
He was retired pastor of Highlawn Baptist Church, St. Albans, having served from 1949-1986. After retirement, he served as interim minister for First Baptist Church, Dunbar, Main Street Baptist Church, Point Pleasant, and Calvary Baptist Church, Charleston. He graduated from Charleston High School, attended Alderson-Broaddus College and received a bachelor of arts degree from Morris Harvey College in 1943. He graduated from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1946 and was awarded an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from Alderson-Broaddus in 1973 and served as a member of its board of trustees for over 10 years. He served over 25 years as president of West Virginia Baptist Education Society and was a founder of St. Albans Ministerial Association and served as its president. He was a member of St. Albans Rotary Club, chairman of the first committee to develop Parchment Valley Conference Center, and was a volunteer chaplain at Thomas Memorial Hospital.
Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Theresa Knapp Keeney; one daughter, Rebecca Palmer of Charleston; one son, Stanley Keeney of Chagrin Falls, Ohio; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one sister, Mrs. Wirt Harmon of Paris, Tenn.
Services were held at Highlawn Baptist Church with Rev. Joe Hyde and Rev. Cyril Johnson officiating. Burial was in Sunset Memorial Park, South Charleston.
CLEO ‘Steve’ STEVENS
Cleo F. “Steve” Stevens, 70, of Clayton, Ala., died Monday, June 28, 2004, at his residence.
He was born in Grantsville, the son of the late Francis Kay and Lula Florence Starcher Stevens.
He retired from the U.S. Army after 20 years of service. After retirement, he worked with the water departments in Bakerhill, Elamville, Cowikee and Clayton. He was a member of Clayton Lions Club and was a Baptist.
Surviving are one son, F.K. Stevens of Eufaula, Ala.; two daughters, Juanita White of Clayton and Lyvoris Jernigan of Eufaula; four brothers, Shelton Stevens of Parkersburg, Donald Stevens of Grantsville, Sam Stevens of Elizabeth and James Stevens of Summersville; three sisters, Retta Johnson and Geneva Wilson, both of Grantsville, and Rachel Smith of St. Marys; and seven grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Opal Isable Mahoney Stevens, in 1996; one son, James E. Stevens, in 1994, and one brother, Festus Stevens.

Gerald “Russell” Ball of Grantsville died Friday, July 2, 2004, after a battle with cancer.
He was the son of the late Georgia Stump and James Wesley Ball.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving from 1947-49. He was co-founder and vice president of Telecon, Inc. and Dynacast, Streetsboro, Ohio, and retired from Johnson and Johnson in 1986.
Surviving are his wife of 23 years, Shirley Ball; four daughters, Margaret Hildreth, Debbie Brymer, Georgia Kasse and Melissa Ball; one son, James Ball; three step-children, Scott Long, Sandy McColligan and Steve Long; 27 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; one brother, French Stump of Stumptown; three sisters, Florence Meadows, Geraldine Hupp of Grantsville and Virginia Bland of Libby, Montana; and devoted friend, Nub Marks.
He was preceded in death by one son, Gerald Russell Ball, Jr.

Sheila Kay Ball, 55, of Elizabeth died Sunday, July 4, 2004, at her residence after a battle with cancer.
She was born in Kanawha County, the daughter of the late Hoy and Myrtle Fields Nichols.
Shewas a 1967 graduate of Herbert Hoover High School and 1971 graduate of Glenville State College. She was employed as a teacher with Wirt County board of education for 33 years and had retired at the end of the school year. She was a member of Mu Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma society.
Surviving are her husband, Larry Ball, whom she married June 25, 1975; sister-in-law and caregiver, Joyce Fitzwater; one niece, Trisha Triplett; and one nephew, Dustin Fitzwater.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Jarrell “Jerry” Wayne Nichols.

He served in the U.S. Marine Corps and was a steel worker employed by Republic Steel, Massillon, Ohio. He attended Bethel Chapel United Methodist Church, Dutchman.
Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Clarissa “Sis” Strickling Goodnight; one son, Timothy Goodnight of Bolivar, Ohio; two daughters, Judy Lea Messenger of Massillon and Robin Parks of Bolivar; a nephew who had resided with the Goodnight family for several years, Gary Jones of Parkersburg; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nephews and nieces.

She was a former foster grandparent with 13 years of service and attended Arnoldsburg Community Church.

He was born in Grantsville, the last surviving child of the late Oak and Clara Ferrell.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and then became a resident of Charleston where he was employed for 33 years at Libby Owens Ford. He was a longtime member of Mt. Olivet Baptist Church and a 50-year member of Eureka Lodge No. 40, AF&AM, Grantsville.
Surviving are his wife, Evelyn Kelley Ferrell; one step-daughter, JoAnne Molessa; and one step-son, John M. Kelley.

He was born on Pine Creek, the son of the late William Russell and Myrla Marie Conrad Stevens.
He served in the U.S. Army and worked for Hope Natural Gas Co., Carl Kelly Paving, and Grantsville Garage.
Surviving are one daughter, Meredith Stevens Koontz; three grandsons, Isaac, Ethan and Eli; one brother, William (Bill) Russell Stevens, Jr., of Grantsville; two sisters, Lurland B. Starcher and Linda J. Harris, both of Grantsville; and four chosen brothers, Jim Knotts, Larry Morton and Jason and Jeff Taylor.

HAYDEN PURSLEY
Hayden Pursley, 75, of Enterprise, Fla., died Wednesday, April 7, 2004, at his home.
He was a 1949 graduate of Spencer High School and subsequently served in the U.S. Army during the Korean and Vietnam conflicts, retiring from the military in Jan., 1980. Following retirement from the military, he purchased and restored a historic hotel built in 1903, as well as surrounding properties in downtown Enterprise. His accomplishments and dedication were recently recognized and honored by proclamation and award of keys to the city. He was also a member of Moriah Lodge 38, AF & AM.
Surviving are two sons, David N. Pursley of Winter Springs, Fla., and Stuart R. Pursley of Orlando, Fla.; two sisters, Louise Jaynes of Hernando, Fla., and Eileen McKee of Millstone; three grandchildren, Lauren, Shelby and Kristen Pursley; his long-time companion, Karin Murray and her extended family; and other family members whom he considered special, along with many friends and relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Iris Simmons; and one brother, Robert C. Pursley.

She was born in Grantsville, the daughter of the late Clyde and Goldie Bennett Hathaway.
She was a member of Baptist Gospel Temple and had attended First Church of the Nazarene until moving to Sunbridge.
Surviving are one son, Garland Edward Stump of Perryton, Tex.; three grandchildren; two sisters, Nada Newhouse of Davisville and Evelyn Haught of Parkersburg; one brother, Troy Hathaway of Parkersburg; and several nieces and nephews.

She was born in Braxton County, the daughter of the late Jack and Barbara Hatfield Richardson.
She lived most of her adult life near Chloe. She was a former employee of Stinson store and post office. She was a homemaker and a farmer.
Surviving are four children, Frances Moore, Toney Morris, Barbara Mace and John Morris, all
of Chloe; one brother, Tom Richardson of Dille; 13 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and one daughter-in-law, Locia Morris of Chloe.

He was born at Cremo, the son of the late Anthony and Rosa Edgell.
He was a veteran of the Korean War. He retired from Rockwell International and was employed by Manchester Tool Co. He was a member of Wadsworth Church of Christ and played dobro with Bluegrass Mountaineers and Earl Todd and Sundown Valley Boys.

He was born in Braxton County, the son of the late Doyle and Mae Nicholas Bennett.
He was a member of Normantown High School State Champion basketball team in 1945 and a member of Masonic Lodge, Gassaway, for 50 years.
Surviving are his wife, Garnet Dawn Moore Bennett; four daughters, Debbie Moore of Ripley, Carol Polan of Huntington, Vicky Carter of Rosedale and Lisa Tanner of Perkins; one son, Richard Bennett of Reedy; one sister, Barbara Kincaid of Spencer; 10 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; one cousin; and special friend, Gene Bennett of Rosedale.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Mildred Davis of Detroit, Mich.
Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg, with Elder George Rose officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove Cemetery, Normantown, with Masonic graveside rites.

Francis G. “Frank” Ayers, Sr., 65, of Davisville, died Saturday, July 31, 2004, at St. Joseph’s Hospital.
He was born in Grantsville, the son of Hazel C. Hall Ayers and the late Vernon E. Ayers.
He was retired from the Ames Corporation; served in the U.S. Air Force; and had a great love for his family and bluegrass music.
Surviving are his wife, Georgia Simmons Ayers, whom he married May 14, 1959; three children, Stephanie “Penny” Stalnaker and her husband, Jeff, of Parkersburg, Francis G. Ayers, Jr. and his wife, Paula, of Davisville and Sonjia L. Cline and her husband, Donald, of Sistersville; five grandsons, Jonathan Stalnaker, Brandon Ayers and Jesse, James and Joseph Cline; one sister, Judy Stump; three brothers, Mike, Roger and Richard Ayers; and many bluegrass friends.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Cynthia Ruth Ayers.
Services were held at Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, south Parkersburg, with Rev. Paul McGuire officiating. Burial was in Starcher Cemetery.

Jo Ann Olson, 73, of Pike, W. Va., died Monday, July 26, 2004, at her residence after a 10 year battle with Parkinson’s disease.
She was born in Pike, the daughter of the late Fred and Arrahwanna Wilcox Pifer.
She was a homemaker and had worked at Phillip’s Pharmacy, St. Marys, for many years. She was very involved in community work and loved helping people. She was a member of Ellenboro Chapter 20 Order of Eastern Star, a member of the Ritchie County Republican Committee, and an officer of Mountaineer Bulk Services, Ellenboro. She had been the oldest living member of Pike Church of Christ.
Surviving are her husband, Charles E. Olson; one daughter and son-in-law, Naresa Jan and Richard L. Cunningham of Sistersville; one sister, Sherrie Channel and husband, Lester, of Grantsville; one grandson, Michael Delancey and wife, Karen, of Fairmont; one stepgrandson, Todd Cunningham and wife, Teresa, of Williamstown; nieces and nephews, Wendy and Kevin Hess of Ripley and Fred and Julie Channel of New Martinsville; special friends, Jennifer Johnson, Lanette Davis and Betty Locke; and her cats, Victoria, Benjaim and Jonathan.
Services were held at Raiguel Funeral Home, Harrisville, with Evangelist Cecil Dotson officiating. Burial was in Pike Church of Christ Cemetery.

James Michael Postalwait, 50, of Rosedale, died Tuesday, July 27, 2004, at CAMC General Hospital, following a short illness.
He was the son of the late Carl James and Eva Jean Stump Postalwait.
He was a 1971 graduate of Braxton County High School. He was a former employee of Norris Industries of Spencer and Newberry, S.C. He was an avid sportsman and outdoorsman.
Surviving are two children, Alisha Lathey and Christopher Postalwait and their mother, Sherry Dadisman, all of Charleston; two sisters, Brenda Mollohan and her husband, Todd of Rosedale, and Treza Shock and her husband, Dan of Rosedale; one brother, Dwight Postalwait and his wife, Jody of Elkview; three nephews, Travis Mollohan of Rosedale, Shane Arnold of Rosedale and Jeremiah Postalwait of Arnoldsburg; one niece, Sara Postalwait of Arnoldsburg; one son-in-law, Jason Lathey of Dunbar; and one daughter in-law, Andrea Dickens of Charleston.
Graveside services were held at Rosedale Community Cemetery.

Mary Ann T. Hills, 52, of Big Springs, died Monday, Aug. 2, 2004, at Arbors of Marietta.
She was born in Adams, Mass., the daughter of Matthew Oparowski of Adams and Geraldine Stachura Oparowski of North Adams, Mass.
She was a retired seamstress for R.P.R. Industries in Grantsville.
Surviving are her husband of 25 years, Reginald G. Hills of Big Springs; and one brother, Michael Oparowski of Mass.
There was no visitation or services.

Matilda Patricia Ann Stevens Fessenden of Portsmouth, R. I., died Monday, July 26, 2004.
She was born in Grantsville, the daughter of the late John Foster Stevens and Virginia Violet Stout Stevens.
Surviving are one brother, Richard Hoyt Stevens of Portsmouth, R.I.; and one sister, Guila June Hayward of Yuma, Az.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Robert E. Stevens.
She was cremated, with memorial service at her work place.

G.H. (Harley) McKown, 86, of Beech, died Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2004, at his residence.
He was the son of the late Kenna J. and Addie Norman McKown.
He was a Christian and attended Milo Community Church, Minnora, and was a member of the former Minnora IOOF Lodge.
Surviving are his wife of 67 years, Madge Houchin McKown; three sons, Donald McKown and wife Becky of Murraysville and Bradley McKown and wife Brenda and Wendell McKown and wife Chris, all of Orma; two daughters, Shirley Jett and husband Calvin of Doylestown, Ohio, and Karen Ellison and husband Steve of Orma; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; one brother, Oris McKown of Florida; and one sister, Mazel Faye Pignard of Texas.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Denver, Thurman, Cleddie and Donald McKown; one sister, Hazel Bowers; and two grandsons.

Alta L. Davis, 86, of Glenville, died Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2004, at Minnie Hamilton Health Care Center.
She was the daughter of the late Byron and Gladys Dora Rogers Bush.
Surviving are three daughters, Ruth A. Simmons, Carolyn S. Luzader and Sharon G. Mortensen; two sons, Kenneth C. Davis and Dennis R. Davis; 19 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Arlie L. Tingler, 86, of Vienna, died Friday, July 30, 2004, at his residence.
He was born in Calhoun County, the son of the late Roscoe and Nettie Richards Tingler.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and had attended Christian Life Center, Parkersburg. He had worked for Hope Gas Co. and retired from John Manville Co. after 29 years of service.
Surviving are 10 children, Marvin Tingler of Warren, Ohio, Marlin Tingler of Walker, Lawrence Tingler of Ohio, Michael Tingler, Dora Whitehair and Marsha Carroll, all of Parkersburg, Delmar Tingler and Charlotte Gant, both of Davisville, and Lonnie Tingler and Rosemary Icenhower, both of Vienna; two brothers, Orville Tingler of Florida and Alvin Tingler of Windham, Ohio; five sisters, Margaret Cox of Florida, Dorothy Dye of Grantsville, Oleta Wilt of Vienna, Velda Kelly of Atwater, Ohio, and Ireda Hardman of Calhoun County; 41 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Dora Muriel Wyers Tingler; one son, Melvin Tingler; one granddaughter, Shannon Nicole Tingler; and two brothers, Romie and Oney Tingler.

Virgil L. Belt, 72, of Wayne, died Thursday, Aug. 5, 2004, at VA Medical Center, Huntington.
He was born at Munday, the son of the late Cecil J. and Stella McIntire Belt.
He was a U.S. Army veteran and a retired machine operator.
Surviving are his wife, Norma Holbrook Belt; one daughter, Roseanna Belt of Newark, Ohio; one grandson, Christopher Belt of Zanesville, Ohio; three brothers, Kenneth and Robert, both of Munday, and Mitchell of Vienna; four sisters, Cleoda Smith, Pauline May and Barbara Holbert, all of Mineral Wells, and Ada McPeek of Parkersburg; nine nieces, eight nephews; and numerous great-nieces and nephews.

She was born in Calhoun County, the daughter of the late James and Fonda Radabaugh Whipkey.
She was a lifelong member of Chapel Baptist Church, Nobe.
Surviving are her husband of 58 years, Delbert J. Amos; four sons, Roger of Burnt House, Charles of Walker, Dennis of Martinsburg and Paul of Alabama; four daughters, Rochelle Brann of Utah, Sandra Francis of Wyoming and June McCloy and Joan Smith, both of Parkersburg; three brothers; two sisters; one foster brother; 23 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

Bradley Stockwell, 69, of Nobe, died Wednesday, June 23, 2004, at Charleston Area Medical Center.
He was born in Calhoun County, the son of the late Asher and Stella Bennett Stockwell.
He was a retired welder.
Surviving are one brother, Donald Stockwell of Orrville, Ohio; two sisters, Elizabeth Coleman of Lancaster, Ohio, and Virginia Alice Stockwell of Akron, Ohio; and one step-son, Michael Stockwell.
He was preceded in death by one son, Bradley Stockwell, and one brother, Bill Stockwell.

Juanita Limer Wilson, 89, of Grantsville, died Sunday, Aug. 8, 2004, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital.
She was born at McWhorter, the daughter of the late Marshall and Ida Goodwin Limer.
She taught school in Calhoun County for many years. She was a member of Pleasant Hill Woman’s Club and Grantsville Rebekah Lodge.
Surviving are four children, Charles Wilson and wife Annalou, William Spence Wilson and wife Charlotte, Connie Bailey and husband Gary, and Carole Weekley and husband Carroll, all of Parkersburg; 11 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one sister, Billie Smith of Charlotte, N.C.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Hugh Wilson; one son, David Wilson; three brothers; and two sisters.

James Roy King, 50, of Chloe, died Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2004, as a result of an auto accident in Clay County.
He was born in Akron, Ohio, the son of the late James King and Betty Lou Mollohan Johnson.
Surviving are his wife, Roselee Sears King; one son, James L. King; one daughter, Angela King; one daughter-in-law, Amanda Gordon King; six sisters, Tracey L. Elmer Cottrell, 96, of Arnoldsburg, died Wednesday, Aug. 11, 2004, at Roane General Hospital.
He was born in Clay County, the son of the late Silas and Sarah Hunt Cottrell.
He was a former timber cutter and farmer.
Surviving are three sons, Dean Cottrell of Garrettsville, Ohio, Grant Cottrell of Mentor, Ohio, and Richard Cottrell of Arnoldsburg; one daughter, Sharon Lowther of Paris, Ohio; one step-daughter, Carol Jones of Arnoldsburg; and several grandchildren, step-grandchildren and step-great-great-grandchildren.

Leo Richard Starcher, 61, of Rockport, died Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2004, at West Penn Burn Center Hospital, Pittsburgh.
He was born in Calhoun County, the son of the late Harlan D. and Mae Laddie Starcher.
He was employed as a driver for Stuart Oil Co., Parkersburg, for the past 15 years and had formerly worked in the oil fields. He was a Baptist.
Surviving are his wife, Janie Small Starcher; three sons, Timothy Starcher of Haw River, N.C., Bill Smith of Rockport and Stacey Smith of Snow Camp, N.C.; three daughters, Sherry Simmons and husband Larry of Big Springs, Kim Forshey and husband Gary of Rockport and Tracie Williams and husband Jack of Fairplain; 12 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two brothers, Darrell Starcher of Palestine and Harlan Starcher, Jr., of Stumptown; five sisters, Ruby Powell and Rita Warnick, both of Barberton, Ohio, Emogene Poling and Janet Whited, both of Grantsville, and Lena Franks of Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.

She was born at Millstone, the daughter of the late Samuel Clyde and Lenora Mae Starcher Kelley.
She was a homemaker.
Surviving are her husband of 39 years, Frank Wilson, Jr.; two sons, Michael Dean Hersman of Spencer and Bradley Dale Wilson of Prosperity; one daughter, Sherri Honaker and husband Rufus Honaker, Jr., of Mt. Ophard “Shorty” Hathaway, 93, of Zebulon, Ga., formerly of Parkersburg and Grantsville, died Sunday, Aug. 15, 2004, at Riverside Nursing Center, Thomaston, Ga.
He was born in Calhoun County, the son of the late Ira D. “Doc” and Birtie Sturm Hathaway.
He was a U.S. Army veteran and was retired from Wood County Board of Education.
Surviving are two brothers, Frank Hathaway of Elizabeth and Ira D. Hathaway of Florida; one sister, Mittie Sampson of Grantsville; one step-daughter, Carolyn Erp Friend of Albany, Ga.; two step-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Irma Hathaway, in 1982.

Gerrit Witte, 87, of Apache Junction, Ariz., died Friday, Aug. 20, 2004.
He was born in Calhoun County, the son of the late Samuel and Clida Witte.
He was a member of White Oak Baptist Church, Chloe. After retiring from Ormet Corp., he moved to Arizona in 1982.
Surviving are his wife, Ruth; three daughters, Karren Sorrells, Gerrita Postlewait and Jennifer Mason; one son, Kevin Witte; four grandchildren; and one sister, Ilene.
STEVE RICHARDS
Steve Richards, 55, died Wednesday, Aug. 11, 2004, in Zambia, Africa.
He was the son of Mestil Richards and the late Robert “Bud” Richards of Harrisville.
He graduated from Harrisville High School in 1967, Glenville State College in 1970, and Massillon Baptist College in 1987. He worked for Westvaco Corp. for 14 years and at Camp of The Hills, Procious, for three years. He founded and pastored Calvary Baptist Church, Harrisville (now Southside Baptist Church). He was involved in numerous mission projects, including two years in India with Priority One India and three years in Zambia with Baptist International Outreach.
Surviving are his wife of 34 years, Linda Richards; one son, Kevin of Adrian, Mich.; one daughter, Julie Seagraves of Ashford; two brothers, Larry Richards of Walker and Ray Richards of Portsmouth, Va.; his grandmother, Lola Kirby of Big Springs; and three grandchildren.
A celebration of his life was held in Livingston, Zambia, with burial in Livingston. Memorial service was held at Clay First Baptist Church, Clay.
ELVA YOAK
Elva Yoak, 90, of Grantsville, died Friday, Aug. 20, 2004, at Minnie Hamilton Health Care Center.
She was born in Calhoun County, the daughter of the late Wattie and Dona Norman Yoak.
She was a graduate of Glenville State College where she earned a B.S. degree in education. She was a retired elementary school teacher in Calhoun County with 30 years of service. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Grantsville, and Calhoun County Senior Citizens. She had been a caretaker for F.F. and Nellie McCoy for many years.
Surviving are one half-brother, Arnold Yoak; two half-sisters, Betty Smith and Ruby Gene Godfrey; one step-sister, Eleanor Welch; and one step-brother, Kenneth Deulley.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Alva, Jack and Marvin Yoak; two sisters, Sarah Yoak and Mary Selmon; and one half-sister, Maxine Sults.
Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Rev. Carroll McCauley officiating. Burial was in Bethlehem Cemetery, near Grantsville.

Howard T. Dye, 96, of Chloe, died Sunday, Aug. 29, 2004.
He was born in Calhoun County, the son of the late Dr. J.A. and Cora Griggs Dye.
He was a member of New Life Baptist Fellowship Church, Arnoldsburg. He was a former employee of Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. with 20 years service and was a former home building contractor. He was an artist with wood.
Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Losie Lamb Dye; one son, Jack Dye of Medina, Ohio; one sister, Eva Joy of Williamstown; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by five sisters, Kate Knotts, Jane Drake, Mary Smith, Anna Nicholas and Sophia Reynolds; and three brothers, Harry Dye, Lance Dye and James Dye.

He was born in Gilmer County and was a U.S. Army veteran and served in Germany.
Surviving are his wife of 41 years, Madge Isenhart; two daughters, Joan Kelley of Sand Fork and Christine Smith of Rock Hill, S.C.; two sons, Tommy Lee Isenhart of Elizabethtown, Ky., and Jackie Dale Isenhart, Jr., of Shock; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; four sisters, Jean Brown of Morgantown, Janet Isenhart of Parkersburg, Marty Bunn of Glenville and Carol Harrington of Spartansburg, S.C.; two brothers, Ernest “Tinker” Isenhart of Gettysburg, Pa., and Roger Isenhart of Meadowbrook; and several nieces and nephews.

Bernstein Neville “B.N.” Cooper, 91, died Tuesday, Aug. 24, 2004, in a Beckley hospital.
He was born at Little Creek, Creston, the eldest son of the late Howard C. and Sarah Jane Shrader Cooper.
He retired from Cabot Oil & Gas Co. as assistant superintendent in Pineville. He was a member of Cook Memorial Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, and Pineville Lions Club with 29 years of service.
Surviving are two daughters, Carolyn Joyce Worrell of Oceana and Patricia Jane Lewis of Wyoming; two sons, Mitchell David Cooper of Sophia and Randall Boyd Cooper of Bluefield, Va.; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one sister, Byrnadeen Offutt of Millstone; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Opal Eloise Davis Cooper, May 12, 1996; one infant daughter, Carletta Joy Cooper; one granddaughter, Rebecca Lynn Cooper; and his brother, Forrest A. Cooper.
His body was sent to West Virginia University Dept. of Anatomy Human Gift Registry, Morgantown. A memorial to celebrate his life was held at Cooke Memorial Baptist Church, Pineville, with Rev. Clay Phillips and Rev. Glen Kuhn officiating.

Darrell Scott Hardman, 21, of Grantsville, died Saturday, Aug. 28, 2004, at his home.
He was the son of Roger Dewaine Hardman and Dorothy Marrion Brooks Hardman.
Surviving in addition to his parents are one brother, Jeff Dewaine Hardman of Grantsville, and two sisters, Mary Pearl Hardman of Grantsville and Rachel Lynn Hardman of North Carolina.
He was preceded in death by an infant brother, Roger Dewaine Hardman II.

He was born in Calhoun County, the son of the late Hollie and Josephine Bowers Williams.
He was a graduate of Riggs-Lemar Barber College, Akron, Ohio, and was a barber in Grants-ville for 30 years, after several years working in Marietta, Ohio. He was a woodcrafter, carver and musician. He crafted models of riverboats that once traveled the Little Kanawha River and was a local historian.
Surviving are his wife, Dottie Roach Williams; several cousins; and an aunt and uncle.
Graveside rites were held at Big Bend Cemetery with Rev. Lawson Whipkey officiating.

Donald Lee Siers, 76, of Orma, died Thursday, Sept. 2, 2004, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital, Parkersburg.
He was born in Calhoun County, the son of the late Augusta Edward and Lillie May Greathouse Siers of Lower Nicut.
Surviving are one sister, Laura Frances Hunter of Belpre, Ohio; one niece, Cindy Hunter Shirley of Virginia; and one nephew, Jeffrey Hunter of Belpre, Ohio.

Chester Forest Fluharty, 80, of Grantsville, died Thursday, Sept. 2, 2004, at Minnie Hamilton Health Care Center.
He was the son of the late Guy and Ivy Snider Fluharty.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran serving in World War II from 1942-1945 and was a Purple Heart Award recipient. He retired from the U.S. Army Reserve Unit, Grantsville. He was retired from Consolidated Natural Gas Co. where he was a field foreman with 36 years of service. He was a former two-term mayor of Grantsville and former fire chief of Grantsville Volunteer Fire Dept. He was a resident of Lake Panasoffkee, Fla., for 20 years, where he was a member of DAV and American Legion.
Surviving are one sister, Lena Barker of Pine Grove; one son, Thomas Scott Fluharty and wife Barbara of Annamoriah; one granddaughter, Dena Roberts of Spencer; and two great-grandsons.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Cora Mae Valentine Fluharty, on Nov. 4, 2003, and three brothers, Durl, Clide and Burl.

Lena Jane Ferguson, 68, of Elizabeth, died Saturday, Sept. 4, 2004, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital, Parkersburg.
She was born in Gilmer County, the daughter of the late Leamon and Amy (Susie) Grogg.
She graduated from Tanner High School and she was a member and the pastor’s wife of Road Fork Baptist Church, Lower Salem, Ohio.
Surviving are her husband of 45 years, Ronzel B. Ferguson, Sr.; two sons, Ronzel Bryan Ferguson, Jr., and Jon M. Ferguson; two daughters, Rhonda J. Haines and Amy B. Ward; 12 grandchildren; six brothers, Rondel, Billy, Kenny, Anthony and Danny Grogg; and six sisters, Freda Amos, Delores Davis, Katherine Phillips, Connie Cogar, Peggy Wade and Dottie Frazier.
She was preceded in death by seven brothers, Keven, Marshall, Leon, Steve, Fred, Donald and Jackie Grogg.

Elias Don Yoak, 82, of Spencer, died Saturday, Sept. 4, 2004.
He was the son of the late Ira and Fannie Yoak.
He was a member of Methodist Memorial Church, Spencer, 60-year member of Eureka Masonic Lodge and member of Scottish Rite and Nemesis Shrine for more than 50 years. He was a one-term member of W.Va. House of Delegates and served in other positions in the Legislature for more than 60 years. He was appointed to multiple terms of the National Silver Haired Congress.
Surviving are his wife, Lucretia Smith Yoak; one son, Denzel Yoak; four grandchildren; two brothers, Harold Yoak of Parkersburg and Von Yoak of Grantsville; seven great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by three sisters, Mildred, Betty and Oleta; three brothers, Glendon, Paul and Morris; and one daughter, Donna Yoak Hardman.

She was the daughter of the late Herman and Lillie Price Bowers.

Mavis Garnet Wilson Woodyard, 87, died Friday, Sept. 3, 2004, at the home of her caregiver, Sue Dilley of Sutton.
She was born at Laurel Fork, Gilmer County, the daughter of the late Floris Birton and Lilly Lawson Wilson.
She was a member of Shock Church of Christ.
Surviving are one son, Wayne of Cedarville; one daughter, Helen of Shock; two granddaughters; two great-granddaughters; two brothers, Marvin Blaire Wilson of Centreville, Va., and Burl Wilson of Massillon, Ohio.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Park Woodyard, in 1997; two brothers, Orel Wilson of Florida and Arden Wilson of Elyria, Ohio; and one sister, Maysel Wilson Miles of Stonewood.

Jackie Winford Booher, 74, of Mt. Zion, died Friday, Sept. 10, 2004, at home.
He was born in Barberton, Ohio, the son of the late Luther Booher, former constable in Calhoun, and the late Mary Opal Pittzenburger Booher of Nicholas County, former midwife in Calhoun.
He retired from PPG Industries, Barberton, as a truck driver and pipe insulator with 29 years of service.
Surviving are one son, David Booher of Doylestown, Ohio; one daughter, Barbara Simmons of Mt. Zion; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one son, Randall W. Booher.
Graveside services were held at Mt. Zion Cemetery.

Iva Sampson, 78, of Grantsville, died Saturday, Sept. 11, 2004, at Minnie Hamilton Health Care Center.
She was born in Calhoun County, the daughter of the late Dwight and Mary Parsons King.
She retired from Calhoun General Hospital with 13 years of service.

Arzie William Freed, 83, died Saturday, Sept. 18, 2004, at Minnie Hamilton Health Care Center.
He was born at Freed, the son of the late Lum and Dosha Collins Freed.
He was a World War II veteran, entering the service July 8, 1942, at Fort Thomas, Ky., and serving in the New Guinea, South Philippines and Luzon campaigns. He was awarded Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Ribbon with three Bronze Stars, American Theater Ribbon, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with Bronze Star, and Purple Heart. He was wounded Feb. 3, 1945, and Apr. 23, 1945, while serving in the Pacific Theater. He was discharged Nov. 20, 1945, with the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was retired from Calhoun County Board of Education and was a member of Hoy Chapel Church, Freed.
Surviving are five children, Robert Freed and wife Judy of Belpre, Ohio, Larry Freed of Freed, Vivian Dye and husband Denzil and Donna Poling and husband Dick, all of Mt. He was born in Chloe, the son of the late Edith Anderson and Homer Vaughan.

Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. after 37 years of service. He was a member of Living Water Ministries.

Hovah Hall Underwood, 85, died Friday, Sept. 24, 2004, at CAMC General Hospital following a stroke suffered at home the previous evening.
She was born in Grantsville, the daughter of the late Roche C. and Docia Betts Hall.
She earned an AB degree from Salem College and a Certificate in Social Work from West Virginia University. She taught at Grantsville Grade School, worked in a defense plant during World War II, and served 10 years as a child welfare worker in northern West Virginia counties. She was on the board of Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Cammack Children’s Center, Huntington Museum of Art, Marshall University Artist Series, United Methodist Foundation, and America’s Promise. She was a member of United Methodist Women, Charleston Garden Club, Governor’s Mansion Preservation Foundation, Daughters of American Revolution, Delta Kappa Gamma Society, Kanawha County Republican Women, West Virginia Republican Women, Charleston Women’s Club, W.Va. Symphony League, Hadassah of Charleston, Breast Cancer Awareness, Kids Count, and American Association of Social Workers.
Surviving are her husband of 56 years, Cecil H. Underwood; two daughters, Cecilia Baker and Sharon Underwood, both of South Charleston; one son, Craig Underwood of Boston; six grandchildren; and three sisters, Wanda Abruzzino of Barberton, Ohio, Betts Donofrio of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, and Cecil Mae Cala of Florida.
She donated her body to Marshall University Medical School. Memorial services were held at Christ Church United Methodist, Charleston.

She was born at Cremo, the daughter of the late Andy and Rosie Chedester Edgell.
She was a former employee of the Calhoun County Board of Education as a cook and had been a caregiver for over 100 children in her lifetime. She was a member of Victory Baptist Church, near

She was born in Washington, D.C., the daughter of the late Otis and Katherine Juanita Horsman Robinson.

He was retired from Ceilcote Air Pollution Control in LaGrange, Ohio. He was an eleven year Navy veteran of WWII and a member of DAV of Lewis Co.

She was a housewife and home care provider and a member of Albert’s Chapel United Methodist Church, Sand Ridge.

He was born at Milo, the son of the late Brooks and Sylvia Starcher Boothe.
He was retired from Calhoun County Board of Education, serving 30 years as a bus driver/mechanic. He also worked in the oil fields in Calhoun County.

He retired from Spencer State Hospital after 35 years of service. He was a member of the National Guard and was a Baptist.

He was born in Akron, Ohio, the son of Frances and Virgie Walters Walker.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and retired as a fork lift operator from Fisher Body GM. He was a member of Elyria Masonic Lodge 787 and Grafton Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Kenneth Darrell Walker.

Helen Nadine Whipkey, 76, of Parkersburg, died Wednesday, Oct. 20, 2004, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital.
She was born in Grantsville, the daughter of the late Charlie Hupp and Leurna Hathaway Hupp.
She was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church, Vienna, and DAV Chapter 32, Murphytown. She had formerly been employed by Wood County Board of Education as a cook for more than 10 years and by North Parkersburg Baptist Church as a secretary for 10 years.
Surviving are her husband, Emil L. “Burrhead” Whipkey, Sr.; two sons, Emil L. Whipkey, Jr., of Mineral Wells and Charles W. “Chuck” Whipkey of Parkersburg; one daughter, Linda L. Woolard of Parkersburg; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister, who all died in infancy.
Services were held at Kimes Funeral Home, Parkersburg, with Rev. Jonathan Lands officiating. Entombment was in Three Crosses Mausoleum, Sunset Memory Gardens.

Mary Kendall Fowler, 87, of Stumptown, died Tuesday, Oct. 19, 2004, at St. Joseph Hospital, Parkersburg.
She was born in Cowen, Webster County, the daughter of the late William and Nettie Parsons Donahue.
She had attended Loch Lynn Church of God, Oakland, Md., and was a member of Rush Run Baptist Church, near Stumptown. She was a 50-year member of Community Education Outreach Service and was a homemaker.
Surviving are her husband, Leonard Fowler; two daughters, Alice Kendall Church of Newark, Ohio, and LaVern Kendall Smith of Terra Alta; two sons, Jerry D. Kendall of Eleanor and William J. Kendall of Newark; 18 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her first husband of 54 years, Simon Glen Kendall, and one daughter, Agnes J. Lewis.
Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Rev. Robert Fletcher officiating. Burial was in Collins Community Cemetery, Stumptown.

Rex Ward, 92, of Grantsville, died Tuesday, Oct. 19, 2004, at his home.
He was born in Calhoun County, the son of the late Jesse and Effa May Stevens Ward.
He was retired from W.Va. Dept. of Highways and was a farmer. He was former president of Calhoun County Farm Bureau and was a former farmer of the year. He was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church and Mt. Zion United Methodist Church.
Surviving are two sons, Randall K. Martin of Elizabeth and Dale B. Martin of Grantsville; one daughter, Delana Grapes of Galax, Va.; two sisters, Irene Barr and Madge Hughes, both of Wadsworth, Ohio; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Marie Ward, and one brother, Max Ward.
Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Rev. Rick Swearengin officiating. Burial was in St. Paul Cemetery, near Grantsville.

Mary Eleanor Bagwell Kern, 71, of Victorville, Calif., died at Loma Linda Hospital.
She was born in Lewis County, the daughter of the late Arlo and Mona Bagwell, and lived most of her life in Southern California.
Surviving are two daughters, Sharon Yanero of Grantsville and Sue Bergstrom of California; two sons, Jack Williams and Billy Williams, both of California; two sisters, Vella Cayton of Gassaway and Vivian Leary of Florida; five grandchildren, Sheena Conners of Weirton, Thomas Yanero of Glenville, Nichole Yanero of Grantsville and Tony Costanza and Jay Costanza, both of California; and three great-grandchildren, Jacob, McKenzie and Zack Yanero of Grantsville.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Kern; one sister, Juanitia Decker; and two brothers, Bud Bagwell and Jack Bagwell.
She was cremated and brought back to West Virginia. Memorial service was held at Kern Memorial Chapel, Victorville.
FRED CHURCH
Fred S. Church, 78, of Jacksontown, Ohio, died Sunday, Oct. 24, 2004, at his residence.He was born in Clarksburg, the son of the late Jack and Ida Cantwell Church.
He attended Calhoun County High School and served in the U.S. Army during World War II with the 712th Tank Battalion of the 3rd Army, European Theatre. He worked for Roper (Newark Stove) Co. for 26 years and retired from General Electric-Newark Quartz in 1989. He was a member of Fairmount Presbyterian Church, charter member of Licking Township Volunteer Fire Dept., Inc., and life member of VFW Post 1060.
Surviving are his wife, Ruth Ann Gutridge Wilson Church, whom he married Jan. 12, 1980; one daughter, Regina McArtor of Hilliard, Ohio; one son, Michael Church of Fredericktown, Ohio;
two step-daughters, Jo Sobiech of Westerville, Ohio, and Becky Nethers of Thornville, Ohio; two step-sons, Barry Wilson of Thornville and Marvin Wilson of Toboso, Ohio; two granddaughters; one great-granddaughter; seven step-grandchildren; and one step-great-granddaughter; two brothers, Jack Church, Jr., and Ray Church, both of Newark,

He was born in Orrville, Ohio, the son of the late Ira and Marie Cunningham.
He served in the U.S. Air Force and worked 27 years as a copy editor for a Christian book publisher. He was a member of Spencer Seventh Day Adventist Church.

Eva Jean Sams, 76, of Big Springs, died Monday, Nov. 1, 2004, at her home.
She was born at Freed, the daughter of the late B.F. and Virgie Richards Frederick.
She was a member of Chestnut Grove Independent Baptist Church and had been a foster mother and emergency shelter care provider to over 200 children.
Surviving are her husband of 55 years, Rev. He was born in Braxton County, the son of the late Noah and Thelma Starcher McCumbers.

Denver R. Hicks, 93, of Barrackville, died Friday, Nov. 12, 2004, in Camden-Clark Memorial
Hospital, Parkersburg.
He was born at Mud Fork, the son of the late William and Nora Jane Moss Hicks.
He was employed at Grant Town mine and by Bethlehem Steel at Mine 41 in Barrackville, where he retired in 1972 with more than 25 years of service. He was a veteran of World War II, having served with the U.S. Navy aboard the aircraft carrier USS Crotan. He was a former member of Pennsboro and Fairmont Eagles clubs, life member of VFW, Fairmont, and member of UMWA, District 31.
Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Dora E. Shaver Hicks, whom he married July 1, 1939; one granddaughter, Sheila Sleeth of Washington, with whom he and his wife resided during the past year; two great-grandsons; one brother, Ralph Hicks of San Diego, Calif.; two sisters, Sue Graham of Charleston and Marie Hunt of Valricko, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews, including two nieces who helped care for him over the past few years, Dotty Payton and Jerry Sue Cox.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Betty Hester Teets; two brothers, Waitman Hicks and Bruce Hicks; and three sisters, Arlene, Cora and Roxie.

Maxine L. Freshour, 80, of Magnolia, Ohio, died Saturday, Nov. 13, 2004, at her home.
She was born in Spencer, the daughter of the late Charles L. and Etta Sherry Harris.
She was of Nazarene faith.

Lawrence “Hale” Goodnight, 97, formerly of Brohard, died Tuesday, Nov. 16, 2004, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital, Parkersburg.
He was born in Calhoun County, the son of the late Franklin and Ocie Wilt Goodnight.
He worked in the timber and oil fields for over 60 years, retiring from Cain Oil and Gas Co. in 1980.
Surviving are five children, Arthur Goodnight of Ravenna, Ohio, Mavarine Butler of Bowie, Md., Ronzel Goodnight of MacFarlan, Delores Dye of Smithville and Delmas Goodnight of Brohard; 18 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; 14 great-great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Blanche Bell of Brohard, Wanoka “Tommie” Morehead of Big Bend and Helen Payne of Pennsylvania.

She was born in Calhoun County, the daughter of the late Gray and Hollie Bailey Robinson.
She was a lifelong homemaker and a member of Rosedale United Methodist Church at Rosedale.
Surviving are two daughters, Sharon Laughlin of Arnoldsburg and Alma Brady of Shock; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was born at Grantsville, the son of the late Royal and Alma Kelly White.
He was employed by Ford Motor Co., Loraine, Ohio, in the body shop for 31 years before retiring in 1991. He was a member of UAW Local 425.

Lucille McPherson Hart, 93, of Dutch Ridge, Parkersburg, died Thursday, Nov. 18, 2004, in St. Joseph’s Hospital.
She was born at Freed, the daughter of the late Gay and Alma S. McHenry Freed.
She was a homemaker and longtime member of Red Hill United Methodist Church.
Surviving are two daughters, Regina R. Headlee and Roberta L. Clark, both of Parkersburg; two sons, Benny G. McPherson and Bernard E. McPherson, both of Parkersburg; 14 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Earl McPherson in 1949; her second husband, William Preston Hart in 1983; one brother, Jack Freed; and one great-granddaughter, Katrina Coffindeffer.
Services were held at Red Hill U.M. Church with Rev. Sue Jones officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Delma Irene McEndree, 78, of Parkersburg, died Saturday, Nov. 20, 2004.
She was born in Grantsville, the daughter of the late Fred C. and Flora Stout Stallman.
She was a registered EMT and a licensed RN and LPN. She was a member of South Parkersburg United Methodist Church since 1978.
Surviving are one brother, Delbert Stallman of Norton, Ohio; one daughter, Patricia Tucker of Parkersburg; two sons, William McEndree and H.C. “Bob” McEndree, both of Parkersburg; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul H. McEndree; one brother, Fred “June” Stallman, Jr.; and one grandson, Philip McEndree.
Services were held at South Parkersburg U.M. Church with Rev. Rick Brown officiating, and entombment in Sunset Memory Gardens.

Michael L. Metz, 31, of Elizabeth, died Saturday, Nov. 20, 2004, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital.
He was born in Parkersburg, the son of Charles E. and Barbara E. Bennett Metz of Elizabeth.
He was a 1993 graduate of Calhoun County High School.
Surviving, in addition to his parents, are his wife, Nancy A. West Metz; one step-daughter, Kattie Marie Alton; one sister, Angie Farnsworth of Parkersburg; one brother, Charles E. Metz, Jr., of Grantsville; seven nieces; and five nephews.

Kenna W. Roach, 88, of Little Hocking, Ohio, died Thursday, Nov. 18, 2004, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital.
He was born in Calhoun County, the son of the late Ernest Roach and Rachel Whytsell Roach Kirby.
He retired from G.E. Plastics in 1977. He attended Faith Chapel Church, Coolville.
Surviving are three sons, Albert Roach of Parkersburg, Willard Roach of Little Hocking and Rex Roach of Belpre; seven grandsons; eight granddaughters; and three great-grand-daughters.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Thelma Sampson Roach; one son, Ernest Roach; one grandson; one granddaughter; and one brother, Ray Roach.
Services were held at Tatman Funeral Home, Belpre, with Pastor Wilbert Lowe officiating. Burial was in Decatur Chapel Cemetery.
OKEY LEE COTTRELL
Okey Lee Cottrell, 82, of Ivydale, died Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2004, at his home.
He was born at Oka, the son of the late John and Glenna McGlaughlin Cottrell.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was pastor of Mud Fork Union Church, near Chloe, where he had served for 15 years. He had also pastored Rush Fork Community Church, Groves Creek Community Church, and others.
Surviving are his wife, Alma Nellie Truman Cottrell; three daughters, Lois Cummings of Chloe, Kay Coleman of Ivydale and Terri Funk of Ivydale; four sons, Lewis Cottrell of Nebo, Roy Cottrell of Martinsburg and Randy Cottrell and Ronnie Cottrell, both of Clay; one sister, Dorma “Toots” Mollohan of Servia; 13 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg, with Rev. Darius Arnold officiating. Burial was in Coen Cemetery, Nebo.

Geneva Richards, 80, of Weirton, died Thursday, Nov. 25, 2004, at Weirton Geriatric Center.
She was born in Charleston, the daughter of the late Andrew Jack Church and Ida Cantfield Church.
She was a homemaker.

T. Leon Goff, 86, of Normantown, died Saturday, Nov. 27, 2004, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital.
He was born at Dane, Nicholas County, the son of the late Tommy Johnson Goff and Ida Mae Dodrill Goff.
He was a former miner, mechanic and welder, and member of United Mine Workers Local #37, Baltimore, Md., and Shannondoah Junction Masonic Lodge.
Surviving are his wife, Idell Goff; one daughter, Jean Ashby of Charles Town; two sons, Tom Goff of Churchill, Tenn., and Butch Goff of Charles Town; one step-son, Jeffrey Stump of Charleston; two step-daughters, Sheila Garretson and Shirley Hupp, both of Grantsville; 11 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

H. David Spencer, 73, of Parkersburg, died Saturday, Nov. 27, 2004, at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Parkersburg.
He was born at Tanner, the son of the late Clemmie B. and Cora B. Smith Spencer.
He worked 40 years in the printing trade, having begun with The Calhoun Chronicle at age 14, and continuing at various companies as a pressman. He was a graduate of Calhoun County High School. He retired from Blennerhassett Hotel and served as a volunteer at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital for many years and at West Virginia Travelers Center.
Surviving are his wife of 51 years, Frances E. Ayers Spencer; two sons, Jeff Spencer of Parkersburg and John Spencer of Cokeburg, Pa.; six grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Cecil W. Spencer, and two sisters, Esther Woodford and Clara Cottrill.

She retired from the W.Va. Health Dept., Maternal and Child Health, in 1996. She was a member of Women’s Club, Roane Cancer Education Coalition, National Cancer Society and Roane Community Health Foundation, and long-time member of Spencer Presbyterian Church.
Surviving are her husband of 52 years, Donzel Webb; one daughter, Regina Webb Norris of St. Augustine, Fla.; one sister, Kathleen Coleman of Seattle, Wash.; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Robert F. Mather, 61, of Williamstown, died Friday, Dec. 3, 2004, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital.
He was born in Sewickley, Pa., the son of Marion Holzapfel Mather Hill of Vero Beach, Fla., and the late Floyd Mather.
He was a graduate of Williamstown High School and was a U.S. Army veteran. He was a member of Plumbers and Pipefitters Union Local 168, Marietta, and attended Peoples Church, Boaz.
Surviving are his wife, Bonnie Kay Nixon Mather, whom he married Jan. 2, 1964; two daughters, Tammie Silvia of Williamstown and Heather Renee Satterfield of Arnoldsburg; three grandchildren, La Kretia Silvia and Austin and Tristan Satterfield; one brother, George Mather of Vero Beach; and two sisters, Kathy Mather of West Palm Beach, Fla., and Linda Smearman of Vero Beach.

Mary Virginia Waldo Buckner, 93, of Georgetown, Tenn., died Sunday, Nov. 14, 2004.
She was born in Ashville, N.C., the daughter of the late Snowden and Geraldine Hardman McClung.
She was the great-granddaughter of George Washington and Rachel Goff Hardman, some of the earliest settlers of Calhoun County, and the great-granddaughter of Simon P. and Ruth Coberly Stump, founders of Grantsville.
She spent most of her life in Grantsville before moving to Akron, Ohio, during World War II. She was retired from Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co., Akron, Ohio, and was a member of East Chattanooga Church of God.
Surviving are one daughter, Edith L. Waldo Butler of Georgetown, and one grandson, Greg Butler of Akron.
She was preceded in death by two husbands, Howard (Bud) Waldo and Elmer Buckner; three sisters; and two brothers.
Services were held at East Chattanooga Church of God with Rev. Don Glenn officiating, assisted by Rev. Gary Beck and Rev. Doyle Standfield. Burial was in Rose Hill Burial Park, Akron.

Jerald Newell, Jr., 83, of Orma, died Friday, Dec. 10, 2004, at his home.
He was born at Orma, the son of the late Gerald and Maude Schartiger Newell.
He served as a medic in World War II and was a carpenter, having built two homes for his family and helped his three children establish their homes. He served as a guard at Moundsville Penitentiary, was employed by W.Va. Dept. of Highways, and was employed by Monarch Rubber Co., Spencer, for 22 years.
Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Cleora Lawson Newell; two sons, John Newell of Chloe and Paul Newell of Orma; one daughter, Linda Badgett of Minnora; three brothers, Harry Newell of Orma, Donald Newell of Hartville, Ohio, and Leon Newell of Mogadore, Ohio; two sisters, Emogene Robinson of Tanner and Ellodene Yerkey of New Stanton, Pa.; four grandchildren, Paula Lee-Lyman of McGill, Nev., Rita Badgett and Amanda Steenburgh of Ripley and Dewaine Badgett of Minnora; and six great-grandchildren, Zachary, Noah and Matthew Sturm of McGill, Karissa and Auston Badgett of Minnora and Logan Steenburgh of Ripley.

MORFORD JOHNSON
Morford Johnson, 84, died Friday, Dec. 10, 2004, at home.
He was the son of the late Chapman Ray and Nona Ferrell Johnson of Grantsville.
He graduated from Calhoun County High School in 1939 and attended Glenville State College. He was employed at Glenn L. Martin Aircraft Co., Baltimore, Md., and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in Germany and Italy and receiving a Bronze Star Medal. He returned to Grantsville and worked for Cabot Corp. In 1950, he transferred to Parkersburg and worked for Hope Gas Co. until his retirement in 1982. He attended Wayside United Methodist Church, Vienna.
Surviving are three daughters, Sherry Keith of Washington, Suzanne J. Kirby of Vienna and Sallilee Radabugh of Black Lick, Ohio; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Eleanor Bower Johnson, whom he married July 29, 1943; three sisters; and one brother.

He was born at Nicut, the son of the late John Milton and Lucinda Sears King.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War and attended Sonshine Baptist Church, Lorain.
Surviving are one sister, June Garcia, with whom he resided, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by four sisters and three brothers.
Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg, with Rev. Rick Metheney officiating, and burial in King Cemetery, Nicut.
JUANITA McFADDEN
Juanita McFadden, 76, of Burning Springs, died Friday, Dec. 17, 2004, at Miletree Nursing Home, Spencer.
She was born in Annamoriah, the daughter of the late Scott Thomas and Ova Mae Grogg Greathouse.
She retired from A.B. Chance in 1993 with 25 years of service.
Surviving are three sons, Thomas J. Greathouse of Parkersburg and Stanley L. Lockhart and Tim Lockhart, both of Canton, Ohio; three daughters, Joyce Dobbs of Glenburnie, Md., Beverly Materna of Canton and Donna Tullos of Waynesburg, Ohio; four brothers, Shirley (Buck) Greathouse of Belleville, Eugene Greathouse of Parkersburg, Frank Greathouse of Portage Lakes, Ohio, and Huey Greathouse of Lowell, Ohio; four sisters, Maxine Davis of Mineral Wells, Pauline Messner of Barberton, Ohio, Virginia Swart of Annamoriah and Emma Arthur of Mineral Wells; 18 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sons, Jackie Dale Lockhart and Steven Douglas Lockhart; four brothers, Junior, Gale, Charles and Russell Greathouse; and two sisters, Mildred Villers and infant Dorothy Greathouse.
Services were held at Matheny Pomroy Funeral Home, Elizabeth, with Pastor Robert Moody officiating. Burial was in Bryner Chapel Cemetery, Joker.
SHERWOOD SIERS
Sherwood C. Siers, 89, of Fayetteville, died Thursday, Dec. 16, 2004, at Veterans Administration Medical Center, Beckley.
He was born in Calhoun County, the son of the late James L. and Alice Butler Siers.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was retired from Union Carbide Alloy Metals, Alloy.
Surviving are his wife, Juanita Knotts Siers; two sisters, Nell Jarvis of Spencer and Verba King of Akron, Ohio; and two brothers, Shirley Siers of Charleston and Ray Siers of Chloe.
He was preceded in death by four sisters, Nelsie Parsons, Orma Criss, Hazel Kraigbaum and Ruth Brown.
Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg, with Rev. Daniel Sears and Rev. L.T.
Jordan officiating. Burial was in Minnora Cemetery.
TERESA BUTCHER JARVIS
Teresa Butcher Jarvis, 84, of Canterberry Center, Shepherdstown, died Tuesday, Dec. 14, 2004, at Jefferson Memorial Hospital, Charles Town.
She was born at Cedarville, the daughter of the late Burke and Ora Lucrecia Snyder Butcher.
She graduated from Sand Fork High School in 1937, Glenville State College in 1941 and earned a masters of arts degree from New Mexico State University in 1966. She was a former teacher in several schools in West Virginia and New Mexico and was a member of numerous fraternal and pro-fessional organizations. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Frederick, Md.
Surviving are one sister, Mary Hazel Lilley of Duluth, Ga.; two brothers, Robert J. Butcher of Glenville and Dr. James A Butcher of Shepherdstown; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, G. Jennings Jarvis; two sisters, Mabel Butcher in infancy and Louise Butcher; and one brother, Roland Butcher.
Services were held at Ellyson Mortuary, Inc., Glenville, where Eastern Star rites were observed.
FLOYD MONROE CARPER
Floyd Monroe Carper, 99, of Uniontown, Ohio, died Sunday, Dec. 19, 2004.
He was born in Chester and retired from Goodyear Aerospace with 21 years of service.
Surviving are two sons, Smith Carper of Uniontown, with whom he resided, and Ronald Carper of Looneyville; four daughters, Betty Newman of Akron, Ohio, Eunice Keyser of New Concord, Ohio, Phyllis Norris of Baltimore, Md., and Peggy Caro of Las Vegas, Nev.; 26 grandchildren, 51 great-grandchildren, 15 great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Judy Kathleen Park of Newark; and several relatives in Calhoun County.
He was preceded in death by his first wife and mother of his children, Ocie; second wife, Mildred; and third wife, Laura Catherine.
Services were held at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home, Spencer, with Rev. J. Herbert Smith officiating. Burial was in J. Herbert Smith Cemetery.
LOUISE DAVIS
Louise E. “Jean” Davis, 71, of Parkersburg, died Friday, Dec. 31, 2004, at St. Joseph’s Hospital.
She was born in Calhoun County, the daughter of the late James A. and Virginia Godfrey Parsons.
She was a Baptist and homemaker. She bequeathed her organs and tissue so that others will benefit.
Surviving are three daughters, Agnes Knopp of Williamstown and Cathy Jackson and Myrtle Martinelli, both of Parkersburg; four brothers, George Parsons, Holly “Buster” Parsons, Cecil Parsons and James Parsons; one sister, Katherine Jones; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Benjamin H. Davis, and four sisters, Geraldine, Nioaka, Melviney and Annalee.
Services were held at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home, Parkersburg, with Rev. George Hall officiating. Burial was in Sunset Memory Gardens.
GEORGIA ROBERTS KIGHT
Georgia Roberts Kight, 84, died Wednesday, Dec. 1, 2004, in Ravenna, Ohio.
She was born in Calhoun County, the daughter of the late George Roberts and Alice Stallman Roberts Haught.
Surviving are one sister, Gladys Pate of Brunswick, Ohio; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and one sister-in-law, Florence Kight Knight of San Antonio, Tex.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Virginia Gandy.
Services were held in Ravenna. Burial was in Park Cemetery, Garrettsville, Ohio.
HOWARD LEE CONRAD
Howard Lee Conrad, 65, of Carrollton-Tyus Road, Carrollton, Ga., died Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2004.
He was born in Stumptown, the son of the late Mancil Conrad and Geneva Riddle Conrad.
He worked in heavy equipment sales and was a member of Oak Hill Church of God of Prophecy, Temple, Ga. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran.
Surviving are his wife, Glada Groves Conrad; two sons, Danny Conrad and Mark Conrad, both of Carrollton; one brother, Haymond Conrad of Grantsville; and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Geraldine Conrad.
Services were held at J. Collins Funeral Home, Villa Rica, Ga., with Rev. Ralph Bryant officiating. Burial was in Oak Hill Church of God of Prophecy Cemetery with full military honors.
NAOMI BALL
Naomi E. Ball, 78, of Grantsville, died Sunday, Jan. 2, 2005, at her home.
She was born at Orma, the daughter of the late Roscoe and Jesse Summers.
She was an active member of Knotts Memorial United Methodist Church.
Surviving are one son, Larry “Bubby” Ball of Grantsville; one daughter, Joyce Fitzwater of Clay County; one grandson, Dustin Fitzwater; one granddaughter, Trisha Triplett; one great-granddaughter, Tara Triplett; one sister, Dorma Crawford of Wadsworth, Ohio; two brothers, Lanny Summers of Massillon, Ohio, and Oswald Summers of Canal Fulton, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dexter Ball; two brothers, Ronzel and Charles Summers; and one sister, Ulinee Crawford.
Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Rev. Mary Zimmer officiating, and burial in Bethlehem Cemetery, near Grantsville.
CLARK JAMES
Clark R. James, 81, of Glenville, died Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2004, at Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown, from injuries sustained in an auto accident at Weston.
He was born on Leatherbark near Cedarville, Gilmer County, the son of the late William W. and Alma Reed James.
He served three terms as Gilmer County sheriff and was a Gilmer County commissioner. He was a former manager of Spencer Livestock Exchange and a member of Lower Steer Run Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Helen R. James; one son, Gregory C. James of Glenville; and two brothers, William T. James of Ravenswood and Sammuel A. James of Parkersburg.
He was preceded in death by six brothers, Boyd, Parker, Justus, Charles, David and John James, and three sisters, Mildred White, Nora Smith and Mary Alltop.
Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville. Burial was in Meadow Lane Cemetery, Glenville.
NELLE HOLT
Nelle L. (Allen) Holt, 80, died Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2004, in Palatka, Fla.
She was born in Orma, the daughter of the late William A. and Emma Bailey Allen.
She was a homemaker.
Surviving are one son, Kenneth Holt of Interlatchen, Fla.; three sisters, Chloe Cover and Ethel Walldeck, both of Columbus, Ohio, and Ressie King of Spencer; one brother, James Blake Allen of Mason; one half-brother, Roger L. Allen of Grantsville; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lymul Holt; two sisters, Waneta Daggett and Ann Kinsey; one brother, Rex Allen; and one half-brother, Lowell Allen.
Memorial service was held in West Virginia.

Edith Maude Cogar, 93, of Elyria, Ohio, formerly of Calhoun County, died Tuesday, Dec. 21, 2004, in Elyria.
Surviving are seven daughters, Mary Jo Coates, Helen Frank, Nettie Fulenwilder, Judy Lee, Ginger Reed, Loretta Van Cooney, and Sharon Rizer; four sons, Bernard T. Jordan, William Cogar, Gerald Cogar and Richard Cogar; three sisters; two brothers; 35 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Services were held at Ewing’s Funeral Home, Elyria, with Richard Kight officiating. Burial was in Cogar Cemetery.
