PAUL McKOWN
Paul W. McKown, 83, died Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2018, at Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston.
He was born in Millstone, the son of the late Evan and Shirley Powell McKown. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Following his discharge, he graduated from Glenville State College, where he was a three-sport letterman, played on one of GSC’s undefeated football teams, and was named to the all-conference team as a running back. He was a WVIAC basketball official for more than 20 years. He was a teacher and coach at Fayetteville High School from 1959-1977 and moved into an administrative position with Fayette County Schools in 1978, when he became director of transportation. He served a term in the W.Va. House of Delegates (1977-78) and was president of W.Va. Retailers Association for 22 years.
Surviving are his wife, Shirley; four children, Mike McKown, Jody McKown, Stephanie Johnson and Julie Snyder; 12 grandchildren, Bo, Nelson, Sam, Luke, Joe and Evan McKown, Eric Johnson, Jamie Johnson, Cassidy and Jillie Webb and Evelyn and Lily Snyder; 10 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Ted McKown and Frank McKown; one sister, Marti Booth; and one sister-in-law, Nancy McKown.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Helen Wade and Lou Lilly, and four brothers Bob McKown, Ed McKown, Charles McKown and Jack McKown.
Memorial service to celebrate his life will be held Saturday, 1:30 p.m., at St. Marks United Methodist Church, Charleston, with Rev. Anne Pruett-Barnett officiating, with a reception to follow. Visitation will be held Saturday, 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., at the church. MARIE WHYTSELL
Marie A. Whytsell, 83, of Grantsville, died Friday, Aug. 3, 2018, at Camden Clark Medical Center, Parkersburg.
She was born in Albany, N.Y., the daughter of the late Joseph and Freda Kegley Albanese. She was a homemaker.
Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Jeffrey and Tami Whytsell of Ashland, Ohio; three sisters, Rose of Grantsville, Sally of New York and Beverly of Alabama; four grandchildren, Jessica Hitchinson of Wooster, Ohio, and Jeremy Whytsell, Tiffany Whytsell and Tyson Krebs, all of Ashland; and two great-grandchildren, Bentley Hutchinson of Wooster and Addison Whytsell of Ashland.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard C. Whytsell, and two brothers, Frederick and Tony.
Memorial service will be held Saturday, 11 a.m., at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home, Spencer, with Pastor Rick Metheney officiating. Burial will be in Eventide Cemetery, Spencer. Visitation will be held Saturday, 10:30 a.m., at the funeral home.
