FOREST JUNIOR MORRIS
Forest Junior Morris, 84, of Millstone, died Sunday, July 8, 2018, at Roane General Hospital, Spencer.
He was the son of the late Dessie Morris Wilford. He was a member of Louisa Chapel Church, Arnoldsburg, and was the bell ringer for over 60 years.
Surviving are one brother, Tom Wilford of Millstone; one sister, Janet Rhodes of Millstone; special cousin, Sandi Vasko of Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two aunts, Texie LaMar and Tressie Metheney; one uncle, William Morris; and one brother, Phillip Gerald Morris.
Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg, with Rev. Shelly Mace officiating. Burial was in Coen Cemetery.
HAROLD EUELL RUSSELL
Harold Euell Russell, 82, long-time resident of Miletree Center, Spencer, and formerly of Creston, died Wednesday, July 11, 2018, at Roane General Hospital.
He was the son of the late Harold & Flossie “Dink” Woodring Russell. He worked for the late Lashley Depue on his farm and was a lawnmower man in the Creston area. He also worked on the Creston ferry. Before breaking his femur, he was a greeter at Southern Baptist Church, Elizabeth.
Surviving are one brother, Charles of Creston; one sister-in-law, Eva Russell; and two nephews.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert Eugene (Bob) Russell and Louis Russell, and one half-sister, Opal.
Services were held at Matheny Whited Funeral Home, Elizabeth, with Rick Williams officiating. Burial was in McCray-Snyder Cemetery, Creston.
TIMOTHY BROAD
Timothy Broad, 58, formerly of Grantsville, died in a pedestrian-automobile accident on Friday, July 6, 2018, in Ladson, S.C.
He was the son of Virginia Judy of Big Bend.
Surviving in addition to his mother are two sisters, Denise Bentz of Creston and Cordelia Smith of Mt. Zion; one brother of Fairfax, Va.; one son, Trent Broad; two daughters, Charlotte Broad and Krystal Broad of Summerville, S.C.; two granddaughters, Rayvin and Lucy Carver; his companion, Faith Thomas; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside memorial will be held at Williams Cemetery, Moncks Corner, S.C., on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
MARY MARIE WEST UMSTEAD
Mary Marie West Umstead, 89, died Saturday, May 19, 2018, at the home of her daughter in Johnson City, Tenn.
She was the daughter of the late Willie and Iva West of Spencer. Before she moved to Tennessee in 2015, she was a member of Mt. Zion Methodist Church, where she had been the pianist for over 60 years. Through DHS, she provided many miles of transportation to people needing rides to doctors’ appointments in Parkersburg, Charleston, Morgantown, and elsewhere.
Surviving are one sister, Helen Young of Ravenswood; one daughter, Victoria Stevenson of Johnson City; one son, John Umstead of Pullman; four granddaughters, Anne Wydler of McLean, Va., Maggie Bailey of Westminster, Colo., Whitney Jones of Elizabethton, Tenn., and Lydia Umstead-Fluharty of Pullman; one grandson, Clifton Umstead of Center Moriches, Long Island, N.Y.; and 13 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Umstead, and one son, Robert Umstead II.
Memorial service will be held Saturday, July 28, 4 p.m., at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church. Covered dish fellowship dinner will be held after the service. Everyone is welcome.
LUIE MAE GRIFFITH
Luie Mae Griffith, 66, of Spencer, died Thursday, July 12, 2018, at Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston.
She was born at Beech, the daughter of the late Andy Osie and Ethel Marie Elswick Duncan. She was a 14-year employee of Westbrook Health Services, Roane County office, Spencer.
Surviving are one daugh-ter, Sarah Harris of Spencer; one son, Matthew Duncan of Levittown, Pa.; two step-sons, Bryan Griffith of Vienna and Steven Griffith of Hopedale, Ohio; two brothers, Charles Duncan of Spencer and Ollie Duncan of Calhoun County; one sister, Lena Moneypenny of South Carolina; one grandson, Dacoda Blake of Spencer; and two granddaughters, Nevada Harris of Spencer and Courtney Duncan of Pennsylvania.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Griffith, and one brother, George Duncan.
Services were held at John H. Taylor Funeral Home, Spencer, with Rev. Jack Roberts officiating. Burial was in Clover Cemetery.
RICHARD LEE SMITH
Richard Lee Smith, 84, died Thursday, June 28, 2018, at Maranatha Rehabilitation Facility, Springfield, Mo.
He was born at Frozen Run, the son of the late Charles Spurgeon and Enid Cooper Smith.
He was a 1951 graduate of Calhoun County High School. In the late 1950s, he moved to Grants, N.M., and worked in the uranium mines. In 1977, he moved to Springfield. He was a member of Laborers Union 676 and worked at Johnson Construction Co. and at Prestressed Casting Co. before retiring in 1993.
Surviving are three sons, Michael of Houston, Tex., Charles of Spring Creek, Nev., and Kevin of Phoenix, Ariz.; four grandchildren, Chad, Amy, Luke and Kyle; two great-grandchildren, Kaiden and Jade; two brothers, Edwin Lowell of Missouri and Jack of Ohio; three sisters, Patricia Debow of Missouri, Dormal Meeks of Florida and Ruby Thompson of Mississippi; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty, and five brothers, Calvin, Lester, John, Emmons and an infant.
