Ruby Elnora Starcher, 78, of Looneyville, died Thursday, Sept. 13, 2018, at Minnie Hamilton Health System.

She was born at Philippi, the daughter of the late Erman and Audra Van Buren Bourne. She retired from Wayne Dalton Door, Inc., Dalton, Ohio.

Surviving are her husband of 57 years, Melvin Ray Starcher, whom she married Dec. 3, 1960; one daughter and son-in-law, Lorna and Ed Hill of Massillon, Ohio; three sons and daughters-in-law, Donald and Priscilla Starcher and Edward and Marjorie Starcher, all of Massillon, Ohio, and Ronald and Kara Starcher of Looneyville; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one niece, who was like a sister, Patrice Collins of Grafton.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Roland Bourne.

Services were held at John H. Taylor Funeral Home, Spencer, with Rev. Carl Marks officiating. Burial was in Wayne Cemetery, Beech.


Janis Lynne (Beecher) Ritchie, 67, of Summersville, died Monday, Sept. 17, 2018, at Bowers Hospice House, Beckley, after a battle with cancer.

She was born in Pennsylvania, the daughter of Marilyn Beecher and the late James Beecher. She grew up in Calhoun County with her three siblings, Stevan, Robin and Andrea. She was a 1969 graduate of Calhoun County High School. She moved to Summersville in 1986, and worked at Summersville Regional Medical Center until her retirement in 2017. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Summersville.

Surviving in addition to her mother are one son, Brian Ritchie of Grantsville; one daughter, Lisa Harris of Summersville; two granddaughters, Elaina Adkins and Hollie Harris; six grandsons, Austin Ritchie, Nicholas Harris and Casey, Cole, Conner and Carter Ritchie; six great-grandchildren, Owen and Jackson, Kaysen, Layken and Maysen, and Isabella; two step-grandsons, Colton and Braydon Harris; her special friend, Bob Fockler and his family; and her brother and two sisters.

She was preceded in death by her father in 2000.

Services will be held Saturday, 11 a.m., at White Funeral Home, Summersville, with Rev. Ryan Trescott officiating. Visitation will be held Friday, 6 to 8 p.m., and Saturday, 10 to 11 a.m., at the funeral home. Burial will be in Walker Memorial Park, Summersville. Condolences may be directed to the family at


Master Chief Petty Officer Paul Edward Drennen, Jr., 62, of Spencer, died Saturday, Sept. 15, 2018, at his home

He was the son of the late Paul and Garnett Drennen, Sr. He was a 1974 graduate of Walton High School and retired from the U.S. Navy in 1993 after serving 20 years.

He retired from the U.S. Postal Service after serving as postmaster at Chloe.

Surviving are his wife, Anna Drennen; two daughters, Jenn MacLeod and Hannah Drennen, both of Rhode Island; Tyrell Frame and son by choice Timothy McGlothin of Spencer; four granddaughters, Jocelyne, Savannah, Cierra and Lacie; six sisters, Carol Showalter and Lisa Walker, both of Florida, Barb Martin and Paula Florian, both of Ohio, and Janet Hall and Linda Dennis, both of West Virginia; and one brother, Ed Drennen.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Oelling and Bonnie Westfall; one niece, Julie Hall; and one great-nephew, Devon.

Paul requested a private service on the front porch.


Frederick R. “Fred” Lowe, 83, died Friday, Sept. 14, 2018.

He was born in Spencer, the son of the late Bruce and Anne Lowe, and grew up in Grantsville. He attended Calhoun County High School and Ohio University, where he played baseball and basketball. He signed a contract with the Cincinnati Reds and pitched for three years. He served as president and chief executive officer of several financial services companies in Florida before retiring in 2008.

Surviving are his wife, Eleanor; children, BethAnn Chavira, Gregory Lowe, Patricia Walsh and Eleanor Evensen; grandchildren, Monica, Gabrielle and Cole Chavira, Kathleen Herman, and Griffin and Nolan Eyles; great-grandchildren, Luca and Bennett Herman; brother, Steven Lowe; and niece and nephews.

He was predeceased by one brother, Robert Lowe, and one daughter, Karen Lowe DeAngelis.

Visitation was scheduled Wednesday, 5 to 7 p.m., at Taylor & Modeen Funeral Home, 250 Center St., Jupiter, Fla. Services will be held Thursday, 10 a.m., at Jupiter First Church, 1475 Indian Creek Parkway, Jupiter. Committal service will be in Riverside Memorial Park, Tequesta, Fla.
